Anyone seen this show yet? I caught it in Chicago yesterday.
Since most are familiar with the Wizard of Oz, I think there are a lot of things that that make it an interesting story, but in the end, the reason it is successful is because it contains age-old themes of friendship, love, and the battle of good and evil (although it stretches this a bit by questioning the concepts in the first place)
If you are interested, I can provide some more details without giving too many spoilers. If you have read the book, I will say that the first half of the show is reasonably true to the book, but the second half deviates more, mainly because the book story is less adaptable to the stage.
I was curious after reading the book how it could be put to a musical, but it worked well. If you like musicals, this is a good one to see.

I saw it when it first opened in New York and thought it stunk! We left before the 1st act was over it was so terrible. I suppose if you like the depth of writing in television, you would love this show. The script was weak, costumes were so so though the set design was nice. By the way, the critics hated it too, but the audiences have gobbled it up. Oh well, there is no accounting for taste.
Spamalot is much better.

I've heard nothing but steller reviews.
The critics hated it so much that it got two Tonys.
I guess it must be nice to leave a show before the first act after dropping $50 a seat.

I love that book. A lot. That show's been playing right around the corner from here for quite a while, but being the cheapo I am, I refuse to pay full price. When tix become available at half price, I'm there!

$50 a seat? What universe are you from? Broadway shows (since The Producers) now are getting $100 plus for good seats. And yes, it was nice to leave the show since it stunk anyway. The evening wasn't a total loss since we spent it at Sardi's eating steak tartare.
And I'm sorry, but the NY critics hated it. I'm sure critics in the boondooks liked it real well.
And Idina Menzel was good and got her Tony for it. Wicked also won for costume design that is deserved over the other shows for that year. Two Tony's for a show that was supposed to be so great isn't very many.

You must live awfully close to the Gershwin then.

Nice way to characterize Chicago.
BTW, it won a Tony for costumes? I thought you said the costumes were "so so"?
Oh well, I guess there IS no accounting for taste. Or lack of it, as the case may be.

People really eat steak tartare for pleasure? I always assumed it was some sort of dare.
Cheers,

You bet! My wife and I love steak tartare. I never get enough of that stuff and I think that Sardi's does it perfectly.
Wicked still stunk. Though we saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and it was pretty fun.
