Story (http://www.artknowledgenews.com/?q=node/457) LONDON, ENGLAND-Art prankster Bansky placed a fake prehistoric rock art of a caveman with a shopping trolley on the walls of the British Museum. Banksy has previously put works in galleries in London and New York.

A spokesperson for the British Museum said they were "seeing the lighter side of it". According to Banksy the work went unnoticed for three days, but the spokeswoman claims it was only one or two days.

A sign next to the work described it as an "early man venturing towards the out-of-town hunting grounds". The sign read: "This finely preserved example of primitive art dates from the Post-Catatonic era. The artist responsible is known to have created a substantial body of work across South East of England under the moniker Banksymus Maximus but little else is known about him.

I'm surprised anybody noticed they were fake crap and not the genuine modern masterpieces those galleries usually sell for zillions. I sure can't tell the difference.

REad Thomas Hovings book about art fakes. You won't believe the millions paid for fake stuff. You won't believe the fake stuff still in museums. I like to play a few games he taught me when I'm in a museum. One if to spot the fakes. EVERY museum has fakes, and most of them don't want them exposed. The other is to go with a friend and then compare notes about the three things you would steal.

It's a lot of fun. After you read Mr.Hovings works you can pretty easily spot fakes on your own. They are that bad....

Actually, a lot of museums I've been to have entire sections devoted to acknowledged fakes. You can hone in on your skills by spotting what's fake about a piece before you read the description.
