The Mercury News: Pilot Survives Dramatic Landing (http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/news/special_packages/iraq/5592254.htm)

Large chunks of her plane shot away, the hydraulic control system dead, Air Force Capt. Kim Campbell pushed and pulled at a backup set of manual controls, struggling to keep the anti-tank aircraft from crashing as it limped away from an ambush over Baghdad.

Last year, Campbell flew 20 combat missions in Afghanistan and had experienced enemy fire while patrolling Iraq's ``no-fly zone.''

This is one of the reasons that A10's are so useful. They keep the pilots alive.

But the USAF wants to toss them away and use F15's, which are as old, don't have that cannon, and fly way way too fast to be good ground support.

They ought to make a NEW A10.

This (http://www.sgtstryker.com/weblog/archives/002335.php) is an excellent story that will explain why the A-10 is better than faster ground attack, and why the pilots would rather be in an F15.

The whole reason for US military success, including, for example, the battle depicted in 'We were soldiers once', is close air and military support.

In Ia Drang, they were still using propellor planes. The speed was no issue when what you want is accurate bombing.

The close support allows the US to do what it likes to do, stand back and let the war be fought by remote control. If the air support isn't working, then the men on the gound are the ones who have to work harder and suffer more casualities.

Without the close in support available in Ia Drang, it would have been a total massacre of the Americans.

Yes, it's just what I've heard over and over again.

The problem, of course, is that the whole point of an air force is to GET THOSE GRUNTS ON THE GROUND WHERE THEY NEED TO BE, IN ONE PIECE, AND HEALTHY.

Air, navy, etc, are all important, BUT ONLY BECAUSE THEY HELP GET THE INFANTRY WHERE THE NEED TO BE.

This does not mean I want a slow, inept airforce. It means I want one with F666's (made-up number, I think) and A10's both. I want them to be able to take out the enemy fighters from 300 miles away at mach 40, and then fly (something different) at 110 knots down a row of the other guys' tanks, pumping it full of depleted U slugs.

Pardon me for shouting, but without getting the grunts to where they need to be, the only other option is sterilization.:(

Well if you're into female pilot stories, here's an article (http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/04/09/sprj.irq.thumper/index.html) about "Thumper", who flies an F16 'electric jet'.
