I work for P&G and I posted a link to Randi's commentary on our in house message board with particular reference to Randi's comments about P&G and the Penta Water guy. Shortly thereafter I got a call from the board moderator who was concerned about the posting - not because of the P&G comment, but because of the references to ID which is a hot button sort of issue everywhere apparently. She desired not to stir up trouble within P&G about this non-business related issue. She did say I was free to copy and post Randi's P&G comments. So, I am posting to ask permission to copy and post Randi's comments about P&G and the penta water guy.

The moderator did express concern about the penta guy and is checking to confirm if it is really the case that he is has been appointed to our scientific advisory board. It is not generally a great idea to stir up controversy at a conservative place like P&G, but they are really a very fair company. I am pretty confident that I shouldn't have to worry about any personal repercussions for posting the penta stuff, but just in case, is there any chance JREF could use a used up, not very bright, moderately lazy pharmaceutical researcher?

I had entertained thought and hopes of bring Randi in as the main attraction for our pharmaceuticals company event and even corresponded with Linda about it - we are all scientists here so it seemed appropriate - but the more I think about the more I fear that maybe even for us someone who is dedicated to the actual truth of things in all things might be considered over the line.

At any rate, to repeat the point of this post in case you missed it in the midst of all this - I am asking for Randi's permission to excerpt his comment about P&G and penta water and post it to our P&G forum. Thanks and all my best, BDK

Write Randi directly. randi@jref.org. He doesn't read the boards very often, but he responds quickly to Email -- and I'm fairly confident that he will be delighted to grant permission.

And thank you on my own behalf for brining it to P&G's attention formally.

I have a little bit of sympathy for P&G based on the surreal hubbub over their "satanic" logo.

Yes, you do have a point. Obvious things are rarely obvious at all to me. This is something my 13 year old takes great delight in.

It's randi@randi.org, but you can go ahead and post his comments on the P&G boards. And I'd still love to arrange a lecture for him there!

... we are all scientists here ... P&G is proud--and rightly so--of its research and development. The people who design, develop and test products are generally well-educated, and have had to work hard in order to acquire their knowledge.

Support for pseudoscience by the company would be a slap in the face to the company's in-house scientists. The company certainly wants to send the message to its own people (and to the consuming public) that it values people who are well-versed in the scientific method, and that it does not hold in high esteem the opinions of BS artists.

Despite their supposed credentials, pseudoscientists have a low regard for knowledge acquired through hard work. They are satisfied to make bold claims without solid evidence in support of those claims, which is something that P&G certainly strives not to do.

Thanks Linda, I am still pushing to have Randi come in. It might be more appropriate to have Randi come for a more formal presentation out in Cinci rather than our local company event which is typically a very informal picnic sort of deal with tents. I will post Randi's P&G/Penta comments.

Hey! Keep us up on the in-house comments, if you can.

I doubt JREF has funds to hire anybody. But I have friends who are researchers for a local pharmaceutical here in Michigan, and another friend who translates scientific documentation for a pharmaceutical in Switzerland. Networking is good.

There were only a few comments. I guess P&G has spoken to Dr. What'shisname as they regularly speak to researchers and such, but has no business association with him and no interest in aquaphonics (is that what it is called?) and penta water. His reference to P&G on the website was not accurate and P&G requested that he remove it, which he did.
