Cpl. Edward Chin told the press that he meant no respect to the Iraqi people when he put the American flag on Sadam's statue.

"They wanted a flag on his head, the American flag," Chin said. "They brought it up to me and I put it on there for a brief moment.

"The Iraqi crowd, they were egging us on," he said. "They were happy to see us do it. We took it down after a brief moment and put their flag up."

I wonder if the flag police will chastise him for improper use ofthe flag?

I didntthink it was all that improper. BUT it is being used by arab media as proof of US imperialism. That and the photos of troops loungeing in Sadams living room.

Overemphasis on symbolism. Who thinks that some Marine corporal is disseminating U.S. policy toward Iraq?

I think one Marine with an M16, and a full combat load can disseminate a HELLUVA lot of U.S. policy towards Iraq. Ha Ha!

If he'd climbed up there to burn a U.S. flag, no one would have said a frigging word.

Don't judge people from their titles...
It says nothing about them.

The fact is that iraqi people are happy to be free from a dictatorship but many of them still despise the "western boys".

Lets hope that the UN takes control of the situation now.

Why? Is there something that France needs to veto?

Some Iraqis are pissed with the Germans, French, etc., for opposing the war (note the looting of the German Embassy).

I anticipate that Iraqis will welcome UN humanitarian aide. But they may be wary of UN political authority.

You know, I think I was wrong to dismiss the U.N. so quickly. I think they would be a great help. For example:

- Now that there is no working government in Iraq, someone needs to 'officially' surrender. I think the French would be a great help in that.

- Now that much of Iraq's infrastructure is gone, they will need to rebuild. And who better to help them than the Russians, who showed their great technical prowness in helping the Iraqis install jamming devices during the war

- Of course, we have to ensure that human rights are respected. So, Libya, as head of the Human rights committee in the UN, can help oversee that people are not oppressed

- Many of the nations of the UN are from Africa. These countries are so well run, they can afford to help provide food aid and other assistance while Iraq rebuilds

Yes we could get Guinea, Angola and Cameroon to help them stamp out corruption!! Great idea!

"The Burmese army isn't part of the coalition either, but CNN notes that Cpl. Edwin Chin, the Marine who briefly hung the American flag from the Pentagon over the face of a statue of Saddam Hussein, is a Burmese-American, born a week after his mother, Nai Koon Chin, immigrated to the U.S. in 1980. "We like our children have a good life, good schools," Mrs. Chin tells CNN. "We want American freedom. Now Edward bring American freedom."

Too much is being made of this. A Marine got a little enthusiastic. That's it.

I was just glad they took off the Iraqi flag before they pulled the statue down. Oversensitive types would have had a field day.
