Yes! (http://www.gulf-news.com/Articles/RegionNF.asp?ArticleID=168406), according to Maj Gen J. Taluto.

A senior US military chief has admitted "good, honest" Iraqis are fighting American forces.

Major General Joseph Taluto said he could understand why some ordinary people would take up arms against the US military because "they're offended by our presence".

No surprise here. It is easy to understand such resentments. I wouldn't want foreigners occupying my country either even if they did liberate me. I wouldn't take up arms but could easily understand why others would.

He said: "There is a sense of a good resistance, or an accepted resistance. They say 'okay, if you shoot a coalition soldier, that's okay, it's not a bad thing but you shouldn't kill other Iraqis.'"
Since the overwhelming majority of casualties are inflicted on other Iraqis, I'd say the percentage of "good, honest" insurgents is pretty low. The vast majority are Sunni Baathists seeking to return to the power and priveleges they once enjoyed.

It seems to me there's a serious effort by some bloggers to take this out-of-context quote and make it into something it's not.

Even if the likely outcome of the occupation forces leaving was a return to power of your oppressors?

Yup. No way to assert popular insurgency support anymore, thank you. That fiction ended Jan 30th and in its aftermath.

If there was death and destruction all around me I wouldn't be certain if the cure was worse than the disease. Don't get me wrong. I think it is but I'm not there living with this chaos.

Wouldn’t the foreign insurgents also be classified as occupying forces too?
