Missing paperclip icon in Outlook Express

I did a windows repair a while ago and since then I'm missing the paperclip icon in Outlook Express (above the preview panel). I searched the internet up and down and couldn't find the way to get it back. I completely "uninstalled" (per instructions) the Interner Explorer and Outlook Express and installed them both fresh and still nothing. Is there a solution or am I screwed? It's not that I can't do without the paperclip icon, it's just anoying like hell.

BTW, this is the first and probably the last time you'll ever see a Slovenian version of Outlook Express. :D

By "paperclip icon" you mean the attatchment button, right?

I don't use Outlook, so I can't help. You could always install a different email program, like Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/) .

ETA: I don't know if they do a Slovenian version though.

Yes, I mean the attachment button. It's just gone.

I've tried Thunderbird before and didn't like it (the reason eludes me right now). It's just that Outlook Express suits my needs perfectly and I don't want to change it.

BTW, I only use Slovenian Windows so that our non-English letters display correctly.

The 'attachment' icon shouldn't appear on that window. If it should I have no idea why it should; it certainly doesn't on mine. Click 'new message' icon and see if it shows up on the top of that window.

Just so there's no confusion about what we're talking about, I marked where the paperclip button should be (in red).

Try tools-->options-->security-->
uncheck the box that says "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus"...or it's equivelant in your language.

You are using the preview screen. Unless you are previewing a message that actually has an attachment, the icon [b]should not be there.

Therefore, I am as confused as ever.

In the preview mode, that icon is used to as a tool to download an attachment in the message being previewed.

I already have that unchecked. I can save attachments just fine, but I have to go open the e-mail, click on the attachment with the right mouse button and choose Save As. That's what bothers me -- an extra step I have to do. :mad:

OUTLOOK 6 ----- Tools / Message Rules / Mail Rules / NEW /
Condition checkbox: "Where the message has an attachment" / Action checkbox: see if you have "Delete it" selected?

or possibly:

VIEW/ LAYOUT/ WINDOWS LAYOUT PROPERTIES / Preview Pane /
uncheck the "Show Preview Pane Header" box and restart the computer.

Then, check the box again and see if your Preview Pane header contains that paperclip now?

One more thing. I have two identities and the attachment button is missing in both, if that helps anyone.

Are you sure the paperclip is missing all the time? I've noticed that in my OE Inbox, some messages have a paperclip icon indicating that they have an attachment, but in the preview pane header toolbar, there is no paperclip in the right corner (ie, where you positioned the red paperclip.) And, when checking the message properties, there are no attachments. Other messages with "real" attachments show the paperclip in the right corner.

I've wondered about this for a while...I've looked for the attachement in such messages, but there is none.

Try this....open a message that says it has an attachment but doesn't show the paperclip in the right corner (ie, your red one). Go to File - Properties. My guess is that it will tell you there are no attachments

I've heard about those. Never seen one though. My messages have real attachments. I can save them if I open the message, click on the attachment with the right mouse button and save it.

I can't do that because I have no such messages. Besides it wouldn't do any good anyway, because even with the real attachments the paperclip icon isn't there.

Let's look at that paperclip icon itself and see what it is made of ----- In my OUTLOOK 6, the paperclip is a BUTTON. It is the type of 3-D button that will respond to a mouse-over.
This means to me that it's controlled by some internal object-linked code or script.

Many of my incoming messages are sent by people who have their eMail client encode all their mail "parsed as HTML"

TOOLS / OPTIONS / SEND (tab) --- Mail Sending Format -- HTML SETTINGS (button)

In this case, the entire email is "attached" as an HTML document and the paperclip button appears in the preview pane header (although NO small paperclip appears next to the sender & subject line in the upper frame displaying all mail in the inbox folder).

I've seen such messages a couple of times, but this is not it. The button doesn't show for "normal" messages either.

Yes, the repair screwed this up. The reinstall of Outlook Express didn't help.
Have you tried to re-install the Windows OS ?
See, that's the problem. I don't want to do it over such a minor annoyance, as it usually takes me around 5 hours to install the Windows, all programs, and set-up eveything just the way I like it. If I can't fix it I'll just have to live with it.

It shouldn't take 5 hours to do a WINDOWS install.

I can perform a full install (WIN 98) in under 25 minutes with no need to wipe all the Hard Drive data -- just pop in the install disk and run setup and it should go through the entire process fairly quickly. The only thing it might mess up is your TCP/IP stuff, although maybe not.

Windows themselves take something like 35-40 minutes to install (XP Pro), but I have a lot of programs to reinstall. Then comes network stuff, like the router (I have to let traffic through from 3 other computers and P2P programs) and Zone Alarm (same stuff). Also I have to transfer e-mail from two identities. Oh, and fonts. Lots of them. In different folders. And lots of other Windows settings that have to be just like I want them.

All in all it takes around 5 hours. And that's without wiping the hard disk.

Seems that since you have to set aside a full day for a Windows OS re-install, this missing paperclip is not going to be on your top-priority list! As you said -- you'll work around it. I'm fresh outta suggestions...

I agree. It's not worth it. Try view>layout> and make sure show preview pane header is ticked
