The flag draped (temporarily) over the head of the statue of Saddam belonged to a New Hampshire man, a marine who was working at the Pentagon on 9/11. He got the flag that day, and has apparantly been carrying it ever since.

So, for at least this marine, there is a connection between 9/11 and Saddam.

Well, there is now. Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11.

That's an important point. Yet, nearly fifty percent of the population believes there's a direct connection between Saddam and the 9/11 atrocities. A truly amazing achievement of propaganda! Shortly after the attacks only three percent believed Iraq played a role (15 of the 19 hijackers, remember, came from Saudi Arabia). Still, more Americans fear Saddam than people in Iran (fought a bloody war where a million people died) or Kuwait (infamously invaded a little over a decade ago). We needed to unleash an army on Baghdad before an army of firefighters and medical technicans descends on a major U.S. city to relieve the victims of the next Iraqi bombing.

No direct link. But the anti-American/anti-Israeli stance of Iraq, al Qaeda, and other groups, appeals to a common, Islamic basis. Both Iraq and al Qaeda used the rhetoric of jihad to justify their antagonism toward the west.

B'klyn Marine caught in TV moment

April 10, 2003
Marine Cpl. Edward Chin of Brooklyn showed his colors yesterday in a Baghdad city square, stirring concerns about American motives from some - but pride from his family.

"He will be in history," Chin's father, Stanley Chin, 57, of Bensonhurst said after millions of viewers saw his son briefly draping a U.S. flag over the head of a statue of Saddam Hussein before it was toppled in al-Firdos Square.

If memory serves, the New Hampshire guy handed the flag to his buddy to actually put up there. Both stories right? go figure...

My mistake..... I didn't read very closely at all. Thanks for "unconfusing" me though.

A bit off topic, did anybody hear what Gov. George Pataki (NY) said at a rally for the troops yesterday at Ground Zero?

He was very caught up with the Saddam statue coming down & he said (paraphrased), 'they should melt down the statue and bring the metal to the USA to rebuild the WTC.'

It was pretty outrageous and stupid in my opinion.
