The immaterialist must believe that existence consists of tiny pink elephants or else conclude that the moon is made of purple marshmallow.

My definition of an immaterialist is someone who either believes that existence consists of tiny pink elephants or that the moon is made of purple marshmallow.

My definition of existence is anything that is not made of tiny pink elephants. My definition of the moon is ... oh you get the idea!

Robin, you're new here so I will just give you the drum re polls here on JREF, OK?

EVERY poll, without exception, MUST have a "Planet X" option. This is the placebo control or the cross-reference, if you will, for any of our polls. And an escape hatch.

E.g. "On Planet X, materialism consists of wearing many yards of lovely brocade and tulle toga-fashion".

You are only saying that because you are afraid of change. For years, you've been told the propaganda - yes, propaganda, I proclaim it to be! - that Planet X is the only real thing in existence out of all the JREF fora polls.

But not anymore! The new generation, those with less than 10 000 posts, those who dare to challenge the Establishment, they will not tolerate this dictatorship of planets. We demand equal time for planet Y, planet Z, planet Ekka-Ekka-Ekka-Ekka-Patannnnng, or even choose not to mention any planet whatsoever. VIVA LA PLANETUTION!!!!!

Mr. Gumby;
Physicalism is the doctrine what says that all phenomena can be described in spatiotemporal terms and consequently that any descriptive scientific statement can be, in principle, be reduced to an empirically falsifiable statement.
"OOh no, it ain't."

So you would rather mention stars instead? Asteroids? Moons? Plenty for all - I am an equal-opportunity astronomical nutjob employer!

Actually, comets would be good! There's some really daft tail-of-the-comet-people about who could do with a thorough sending-up!

[snip] Perhaps we should make a poll on which planets (and other astronomic bodies) would be generally appropriate for a poll?

It is, incidentally, statistically unsound to offer and 'out' when you are trying to force a dodgy conclusion. In this case the 'out' itself must be a trap, as in:

a. I have stopped beating my children
b. I am still beating my children
c. I am not sure
