Unreal.
http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=90258
All this from a Baptist church. Shocker. No really. Unfortunately, when many people think of Christians, they think of these loons...not the father of the dead soldier quoted in the article, who is the real deal.
Also this is yet another of about 10 zillion examples of why and how freedoms are not and should not be absolute. Very sad that even the slain soldier's father doesn't get this.
Hey.....how about a protest at their "church" w/signs that say "Baptists are fags?" Better yet: we can go whiz on the graves of their dead relatives and send em glossy pics. Oh and mention that the whizzers in question were gay.
Wait better yet: how about a pic of 2 guys going at it on their dead relatives' graves? Perfect!!
No one would have an issue with that would they? Freedom of speech, blah blah blah right?

I clicked on this one thinking, "Westboro Baptist?"
Yes, yes it is.
Rev. Phelps has celebrated 9/11, the pope's death, the tsunami, and the killing of troops in Iraq. The man is a morbid f***er. So much that should my athieism be wrong, and Rev. Phelps die before me, I will ask God if I can pop down to Hell to watch Phelps suffer.
With popcorn.

He's one of the worst examples of a Christian ever. Jebus must be rolling in his grave...oh wait. Nevermind.

Phelps' big attention grabber was picketing "fag" funerals, but he has branched out.
Picketed Reagan's funeral presumably because Reagan was pro-gay.
His latest is picketing the funerals of fallen US soldiers.
My theory is that he literally went insane. He was really a good guy in the civil rights movement a long time ago.

This church consists of Phelps' family, right? 6-10 people?

Pretty much. And I have a working theory about the amount of, ah, genetic variation in the offspring.

There's nothing on the extremely offensive website of Westboro church that states membership numbers. One article I found from a NH newspaper said there are roughly 100 members.
LITCHFIELD — Despite not having obtained a required permit, members of a small, staunchly anti-gay Kansas church said they will protest tonight's graduation at Campbell High School after learning an openly gay student, who was featured in the past on MTV, attends the school.
In recent weeks, the roughly 100-member Westboro Baptist Church from Topeka, Kan., has indicated it will protest the commencement.

Maybe a bit more, but certainly no more than 20.
People get so worked up about him, unless you live in Topeka. There they just point and laugh. He's sort of a community joke - "Say, did you hear what Fred said today?", followed by much laughter.

He's been in this area a couple of times--protested the consecration of the gay Bishop, and protested a lesbian couple as "best couple in Senior Class". Probably one more I am forgetting.
I wish I could have his frequent flyer miles.

I'm glad I'm not a Christian, and thus don't feel the slightest bit guilty about hoping that someone will beat the crap out of this woman and all her ilk with a croquet mallet.

Someone should start a fund to erect huge billboards all facing Westboro church - with no words on them, just huge angry eyes.

Fred Phelps' "Westboro Baptist Church" has about as much to do with the Baptists as the "People's Democratic Republics" had to do with either one of the three.
His latest stunt is to send his flock to protest Billy Graham's rally in New York last weekend, since Graham, while of course considering homosexual acts a sin, refuses to condemn homosexuals.
The protestors told reported that "we are here to tell everybody that God hates fags and that everybody who listens to Billy Graham will go to hell".
Okaaaaaaaaaaaay...
Incidentally: he isn't the only hate group around! There's always www.godhatesfigs.com . By the way: yes, the bible quotes ARE real...

I wonder how much they would laugh if these people picketed or celebrated the death of someone THEY love? Is it still funny?
Those morons are about a gnat's hair above Phelps on the slime scale IMO.

Losers. There is something broken inside of them. For real. The provocative behavior (sign, flag on the ground) screams low self esteem.

No true scotsman I see.
I'd say that Phelps is a great example of a true, literal Bible believing, fundy christian. He has the same beliefs, but actually has the courage to speak what's really on his mind.

If this nutjob thinks the US is going to hell, why doesn't he relocate to Canada. They have some wonderful anti-hate laws up there that will keep him busy and away from grieving people.

Gee whiz, Charlie. Canada is even faggier than the United States. No hiding place here below, just fags, fags, fags. :D

I go along with the father, who really was a bigger man for not letting these idiots ruin an already sad day. He's right too, at least about freedom of speech in America. The only problem with that is that the ones most often making the loudest noises are most often the least compassionate.
I thought this was incredibly telling, and I wonder how long it will be before this family decides to raise the twelve-gauge shotgun of Michael the Archangel and punish the "sinners" themselves?

Making such hateful and hurtful displays about a soldier's death, at their own FUNERAL no less, is in NO way shape or form funny - not even from a "that guy is a jerk" standpoint. I didn't miss that either, but apparently those goofballs did.

God doesn't like anything. He was probably pissed off at having created the universe out of a paper clip, some string, and Bazooka Joe (God was the Orignal MacGyver), people were bugging the hell out of him because some things he made in the world just wasn't to their satisfaction. This is why God doesn't answer any prayers aside from sporting events and entertainment awards. Because people are still kvetching about such things as people with other belief systems, homosexuality, cats. And that's after he sent someone to get people to be nice to each other. It got spread and it got screwed up.
Of course God hates everything. Wouldn't you? :D

Those morons are about a gnat's hair above Phelps on the slime scale IMO. Eh. I tend to feel as you do about Phelps but the national consensus of people who have to deal with him is indeed to point and laugh. I went to a counterdemonstration when he came by to picket the Stonewall Bar (http://www.stonewall-place.com/pages/1/). I was a ready with some slogans not traditionally associated with lefty demonstrations (At three o'clock we cross the street and kick some bigot ass!) but all anyone wanted to do was point and laugh. Except the Baptist minister lady, who insisted on praying for them. :)
