Novelist and historian Shelby Foote, whose Southern storyteller's touch inspired millions to reads his multivolume work on the Civil War, has died. He was 88.

Shelby Foote wrote a lot of things besides The Civil War. I suggest September, September when you're in the mood for a good crime thriller.

They say he composed all those hundreds of thousands of words in longhand, using a steel pen. He must have had a wrist, and a power of self-discipline, like steel.
