My Extra! sugar-free gum wrapper says that each stick has five calories. Is that just if I swallow it?

nope. Those scant calories are from the flavorings and other stuff in the gum. Don't know if the gum part of the gum has any calories but they're not included in the calorie count because most people don't swallow their gum.
Most people spit. They don't swallow.

Fascinating. How did you come to know this?

How Stuff Works...Gum (http://science.howstuffworks.com/question86.htm)
After WWII, chemists learned how to make artificial gum bases to replace chicle. These gum bases are essentially synthetic rubbers that have the same temperature profile as chicle.
Gum bases (either natural or artificial) are mixed with sugar and other flavorings to make chewing gum. When you chew it, the rubber releases these flavorings into your mouth.
so you see Rebecca, since the synthetic rubber has no carbs, fat or protein it cannot have any calories. And according to www.gumbase.com , the gumbase is insoluble.
now stop popping your gum, your annoying your co-workers.

Innocent, kinky and perverted... the difference between spit, swallow and gargle.
I know, that has nothing to do with gum, but at least it does have something to do with blowing bubbles.

taking this forum down into the gutter one post at a time :D

y'know, jokes like this one and others like "if the bird of peace is the dove, is the bird of love the swallow?" have no place here. That's locker room humor and I don't care for it.

If you have to be told not to swallow the gum, you probably need to be told not to eat the wrapper too. (Even if it is good fiber).

Jeez, try to introduce some light-heartedness into science, and what to I get fro my troubles?
Fine, I'll go to my room.

You know, you people make me sick. I ask a valid scientific question, and what do I get? Jokes like "Mean people suck . . . nice people swallow." Really, I thought you were all above such things.
So Tricky, does that mean there are no calories in the wrapper? I need to know for my Jenny Craig "Points" system.
Oh, here's another, while we're on the (kind of) subject: some chart or something says that there's about 50 calories in a medium sized apple. Does that include the seeds and core?

It's within the margin of error in determining what medium sized is. In my experience, here in the UK a medium sized apple is about 4 inches in diameter, in the U.S. it's the size of your head !!

It's true, in grade school the other children called me "Medium Sized Apple Head." :( Children can be so cruel.
But that's not the point! Do they take the seeds and core into account, or what?

I highly doubt it.
are you asking these questions out of curiousity or are you on some insane kick to count every calorie that enters your body?
if the former...that's crazy but endearing (in a crazy way)
if the latter...even on prepackaged foods they will be a variance in the amount of actual calories present (since they round numbers off and weights will be slightly off)
the best you will ever get is an approximation. you could be as careful as you want but at the end of the day you'll probably be off + or - 100 calories or so.

The former. "Crazy endearing" is my specialty. An evolutionary survival tactic, if you will.

I'm suddenly curious just how many calories are in an apple seed. After all, they do contain cyanide, which in the plant world is a big "keep out" sign. Probably something good in there.

So I was thinking about this while eating my apple this morning and I was wondering how many apple seeds it would take to kill a man. For instance, could I take a few hundred seeds, toss them in the blender, add some of the apple, and serve up some sort of death smoothie?
And could a mod possibly change the title of this thread to "Rebecca's Random Science Questions?" Thanks.

well, when I was a kid I remember seeing a G.I. Joe cartoon where this blob thing was crawling over the country side, eating everything in it's path and growing exponentially. The G.I. Joe crew had the brilliant idea to guide it to an apple orchard where it ate all the apple trees and it then died of cyanide poisoning.
does that answer your question?
No? fine then. Be that way.

Well, this at least gives me a starting point. Could you guesstimate the approximate metabolism of this blob? Was it very large, or about man-sized? How big was the orchard? What season was it, as this could have an effect on apple ripeness.
