This is going to be cool! I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Link no work.
Also, when I glanced at the thread title, I thought it was about reconstructing Neanderthal Gnomes.

Sorry about the link. Here's some of the article:
FRANKFURT, Germany - German and U.S. scientists have launched a project to reconstruct the Neanderthal genome, the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology said Wednesday.
The project, which involves isolating genetic fragments from fossils of the prehistoric beings who originally inhabited Europe, is being carried out at the Leipzig-based institute.
"The project is very new and is just at its beginning," said Sandra Jacob, a spokeswoman for the institute.
------------
In an interview with the German weekly Die Zeit, Rubin said the research would amount to more than just a spectacular display of science.
"Firstly, we will learn a lot about the Neanderthals. Secondly, we will learn a lot about the uniqueness of human beings. And thirdly, it's simply cool," Rubin said.
------------
I hope this doesn't violate copywright rules.

And fourth, they can bring back the Neanderthal from extinction!
More big, dumb people! Just what we need!

Ok, I say: Good Luck! Perhaps they should talk to thier collegues in Tasmania (http://home.hetnet.nl/~harrie.maas/speciesinfo/tasmaniantiger.htm)
On 15th February 2005 sad news appeared. The resurrection of the Tasmanian tiger will have to wait. After five years trying to extract DNA from preserved Tasmanian tigers in an effort to bring the lost marsupial back to life, the Australian Museum has abandoned the ambitious project, after finding its supply of Tasmanian tiger DNA too degraded
And that was gentic material from a less then 70 years old preserved dead Thylacine.
And if they manage to grow a fetus, just imagine the ethical questions raised!
I not gonna put my money there, I tell you!

Maybe we should start with dinosaurs, like in the movies, and work our way up.

I thought the only DNA recovered from Neanderthal fossils was mitochondrial DNA from a few individuals Talk Origins (http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/homs/mtDNA.html)

Nah, with the new labor deal in the NHL they can get all they want from Tie Domi (http://www.tiedomi.com).

That is truly disappointing. Mitochondrial DNA is only passed down through females. That means the Neanderthal clones will come out all sissy.
That, unfortunately, totally neutralizes all the advantages of having a surplus of big, dumb people. :(
(Please -- don't thank me for my helpful posts in this thread. It's my pleasure, really!)
