Well, the cozy relationship between Saddam and Russia isn't exactly news. Yet the depth of it still surpises me.

Countries spy. *shrugs*

As far as I know, Russia makes no claim (that anyone believes) to be 'for human rights' or 'against WMD proliferation'. (I consider them to be only slightly more credible on these issues than they were 25 years ago) I hold them only to the standard they set for themselves, which isn't very high.

They aren't a friend, and they aren't a dependable ally. Occassionally, we work with them when our interests intersect.

However, the UK has been trying to reach a better understanding with them. I would like to say they could kiss that goodbye, however we wont do anything about it. We never do.

From the article:

Top secret documents obtained by The Telegraph in Baghdad show that Russia provided Saddam Hussein's regime with wide-ranging assistance in the months leading up to the war, including intelligence on private conversations between Tony Blair and other Western leaders.

Moscow also provided Saddam with lists of assassins available for "hits" in the West and details of arms deals to neighbouring countries.

Princiipled opposition to war my Aunt Fanny.

NA

Edited to add: Just in case it isn't obvious, my comment is aimed at Russian opposition, and not opposition in general.

Russia has been a key ally of Baghdad since the 1970s and was one of Saddam's main arms suppliers. The Iraqis are understood to owe Moscow more than £8 billion for arms shipments. Russian oil companies had longed to forge links with Saddam Hussein to help develop Iraq's vast oil reserves.
Well, now we're getting a better understanding of Russia's opposition to the war. Doesn't have anything to do w/ humanitarian or moral concerns apparently. And the anti-war crowd says the US is in it for the oil?
