Suggested music download sites?

Kazaa is getting iffy with all the "bogus" tracks out there, althogh still usable. Others you'd suggest? Is WinMX or Morpheus worth a hoot?

For some stuff I use Pedro's and some of the larger bittorrent sites. For other stuff, emule.

iTunes is your best friend for music downloads. It's cheap, incredibly fast, with a great selection and high quality. Plus, you get to keep what you download and no monthly fees.

No, I don't work for Apple computers; it's just a great product.

If you're bent on downloading music without buying rights to it, use Bittorrent, and I suggest searching google for "bittorrent music" or some such...

For "file-sharing activities" I can recommend Shareaza (http://www.shareaza.com/)

Some people have trouble configuring their firewall or router for Shareaza. I've found limewire to be a good alternative. For the harder to find tracks (music that's not mainstream), I recommend Soulseek.

That, and file organization with it is a snap.

Emule, for Zipped music.
Bittorrent for 0-day, but the good trackers keep getting killed.
For Single songs, Kazaalite Resurrection.

Morpheus I think is on the Shareazza network now since it got kicked off Kazaa-limewire. I never got into Shareazza.

WinMX is like having the speed of Emule with the file integrety of Kazaa.

People are also starting to get into Exeem, Based on the Bittorrent client but not needing trackers.

As much as i dislike RIAA, i really think you should go with iTunes.. Especially for small/unknown bands.

I must admit that i have dloaded music, illegally, from the net.
But the last 4 cd's i bought were.

The two Press Play on Tape cd's.
The two Kaizer's Orchestra cd's.

Because i want to give those artists my money.. They deserve the recognition.

For bigger artists, i don't really think it matters that much.
But even though i may not like RIAA, i don't think one should break the copyright law(that i don't agree with), but should endeavour to get it changed.

And, of course, listen to music that isn't coming out of big RIAA labels, which is what i usually do.

Though, of course, a better way of giving money to the artists(if you are so inclined), is to see a concert. <- they get more.

Soulseek has been good to me. I haven't used it in awhile so I don't know what it is currently like, but it was really good. Also try some newsgroups. I get tons of Old Time Radio Theatre off newsgroups.

www.emusic.com is offering 50 free downloads for signing up. No obligation to keep the membership. Take the 50 and cancel if you like. It's a completely legal/commercial site but one upside is that the files are plain mp3s, meaning no DRM.

For a nearly-free quasi-legal (it's legal in Russia) site, try www.allofmp3.com. Cost is $0.02 per MB and you get your choice of bitrate, compression algorithm, and file format, something no other site offers.

DRM is Digital Rights Managment. It's Microsoft's (?) anti-piracy measure.

If you want free music, without paying the artists who created it, a really great idea is go into a record store, say, HMV, and slip a couple of CDs into your coat, then sneak out.

A good tactic is to get a mate to distract the security guard while you do it, because obviously it's only worth risking being a thief if you have little or no chance of being caught and prosecuted.

This won't work, as they put little plastic thingys on the cases that set off alarms when taken through the sensors. ;)

Ah, you can get round that by one of the following methods:

a) Wait for a group of Japanese tourists to exit, and scoot out just in front of them. When the alarm sounds, the tourists will stop and the security guard will look through their bags. You can slip off unnoticed.

b) Peg it.

OR you can buy music legally and ethically and guarantee that us poor artists get paid for months of hard work :D

There is this place called the public library. Long ago, before CD’s they had vinyl records; I wouldn’t take them out because people do not take good care of them, so you had a lot of pops and clicks. Now with CD’s and a little cleaning when you take one out, you most likely will not have that problem, also you can now look for something new and try anything they have and spend no money. I have been doing this the last two months after a friend brought it to my attention.
