He says that he can do much longer... I would think that he thinks it's mind over matter. It seems to me that this is the first time he has tried it with the fire tested to be the right heat etc.

At 2:26 in that video, he's walking away, his foot looks like it's blanked out. Was it that horrific? You couldn't see much as he stepped off the coals.
Also, your "amboes" (sp?) wear groovy hats.
Also, Play With Fire by the Rolling Stones, or The Unforgettable Fire by U2.

I've heard that the sweat on your feet prevents the worst of the heat from burning you. And that when one of the gurus got so confident in his abilities that his feet stopped nervously sweating, he got severe burns.
One thing that makes me doubt the woo aspect of fire walking is that 30 tears a goe I severed the median nerve to my right palm. Thats the carpel tunnel one, leaving 1/2 of my hand numb. Not only did this put a damper on my teen sex life, I have burned blisters on it several times without knowing. I would note that my hand seemed to have something in it when clenched, then find that something to be a blister. Soo, you can get burned without Cranial knowledge.
Update on my health: I'm waiting for trigger finger surgery on my hands. The medical staff will only have to shave the hair off one palm.

I noticed something which makes me wonder if it might be the reason why the guy failed, or maybe one of the reasons. At around 40 seconds into the video, you can see the guy measuring the temperature and right after him a woman with some sort of blower:

If I remember correctly, the ash atop the coal is crucial to insulate the heat, it seems that the lady has been blowing it away?

I remember seeing a program on PBS when I was younger (maybe it was SciAm) where they did a short bit on fire-walkers. And the conclusion I remember was that the certain type of stones the particular fire-walker was using was full of tiny pore-like holes, that allowed the rock to somehow not be extremely hot. So the stones were placed ontop of a path of burning leaves and the firewalker would just lift his foot off the hot rock after about a full second, then move to the next...kinda like walking barefoot on a parkinglot on a hot summer's day. Except being part of an African tribe the skin on the bottom of his feet are much thicker than the average persons.
This conclusion didn't cover ALL fire-walkers, just this particular one that was a member of some african tribe.

Yes, I noticed that too, but by the time he started walking across the coals, they were ash grey again.
Was there any later report on how badly he was injured? I think one of his feet was digitally blurred after the aborted walk.

I watched this last night too. Total flunk.
Should Guiness hire some skeptical help? I saw an episode where they mentioned the Baba from India...and said he stood next to this tree for 7 years? hmm...
There was also this Korean martial artist who placed hot liquid metal in his mouth for 10 seconds or something. Could he have placed a mouth plate in there?

That old Indian could of demonstrated how he could roll sideways across the coals and come out the other end as a spit roast. :D
