View Full Version : Personal cooling dangers?

I've read comments from posters on other forums that the crystals that are used in personal cooling systems (neckkerchiefs, vests, etc) release some sort of toxic substance when wet that can be absorbed into the skin. The items are intended to be wetted and worn next to the skin, so it would be important to know if this was likely. No one has presented a shred of evidence, just saying that they heard or read somewhere that one should be careful in using it. I tried a google search but came up with so much information that didn't apply that I hoped someone here could at least point me in a direction to get further information.

Depends ... what kinds of crystals do they use?

(Crystals of caustic soda, for example, would be very bad when wetted and placed next to your skin.)

All that's been said is that they are "polymer" crystals or beads.

The ones I've heard of use the hydrophyllic polymer used in diapers and feminine pads. If it was dangerous, we should have heard about it by now.
