Ever have one of those moments when you can't think of the word?

What's the word for the effect when essentially you are expecting specific results so you interpret events as though it's a "hit" when it's really not?

Idiometer?

*Apologies for starting a thread for just a quick question.

post hoc reasoning?

The one you mentioned is the moving of the hands/fingers to do what you want without doing it conciously. The dowsing thingum.

Hmm

Ad hoc? http://skepdic.com/adhoc.html

Maybe a bit of cognitive dissonance? http://skepdic.com/cognitivedissonance.html

It's definitely not post hoc...

Aha! http://skepdic.com/confirmbias.html

Confirmation Bias?

Thank you.

My Gawd, I was making it complicated... you're right - there was a disconnect in my brain where I kept trying to come up with that word "ideomotor" - and it had nothing to do with what I was thinking of.

Must remember to go directly to Skepdic next time.

Thanks

You're welcome. You did notice I wrote half the post before I thought to go there myself, didn't you? :p
