I remember while reading Entertainment Weekly the other day, I noticed that particular book being something like the number three bestseller among non-fiction titles. (Feel free to argue it's classification.) I'd meant to check it out before having the knee-jerk response of, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!" but I never got around to it.

Now that Randi's written his commentary, I don't have to and I can go ahead:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

I can't say I'm surprised though.

But, checking the NYT Bestseller's list, (http://www.nytimes.com/pages/books/bestseller/) it's at number one in "Advice." Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/books/all/ref%3Db%5Ftn%5Fbh%5Fbe/104-1359685-1604708) has it at number fourteen with a broken link for the picture. CNN (http://www.cnn.com/books/bestsellers/) doesn't have it listed at all. (Meaning WSJ doesn't have it listed.)

*ahem*

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course, none of these lists have given me an acual number of copies sold, nor a number of people who bought and said, "WOW!! Look at all this truth!" as opposed to people who bought it and said, "What a load of bull(rule8)."

And I refuse to be cynical about that ratio.

Read the reviews, the book does not contain any cures, you have to subscribe to his website to see those. Its basically just a transcript of the infomercial.

Rather nice to see and read all the negative reviews on amazon. On the other hand - how come so many people actually bought and read the fricking thing.

Kind of embarrasing to write a review thereby admitting having bought the book.

I'll call your NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! and raise you a WTF?!?!?! It's number 2 this week on EW's non-fiction list behind 1776.

Sweet juicy jebus, how many gullible people does it take to make the Publisher's Weekly top ten list?

Is it anything like the fascinating book I once read (the libraries do not carry it anymore) called The Medical Mafia?

I just saw his infomercial on late night TV the other night. I sat there in awe and complete shock. Then I nearly cried. Then I went to bed, and curled in a fetal position clutching my pillow.

First, "best seller" status is based on sales by the publisher, to retailers and distributors.

So we have no idea how many individuals have bought this fraudulent book yet. But it's pretty clear that retailers and distributors think it'll move pretty good. Maybe due to some marketing being done by the author. Who's a con-man. So you know whatever he said has not been entirely based in reality.

Second, it's not just your local drugstore that's been taken in.

Air America Radio is running commercials for the book.

Ironic, considering they're the sane side of the talk-radio industry.

You mean you subscribe to his website and hope he lists cures there. Though more likely you get more of the same - untruths, quack cures, plugs for quack products, tantalising hints of miracle cures and frequent opportunities to spend even more money.

I suspect that if you were stupid enough to become a lifetime member for a mere $500 that your details would be worth a substantial amount of money to Trudeau. A list of incredibly stupid gullible people would be pure gold to MLM / junk mailers.

I saw some of this also and the part I found amusing was the fact he was pimping a DVD (on weight loss I think) that he admitted on TV he could not show the cover/title due to restrictions the FTC had placed on it. I am pretty sure it was a bonus gift to go with the book. The way he worded it made it sound like it was a good thing, like he let the secret out and they made him cover it up. Anyone who knows what the function of the FTC is had to just laugh.

What a loser1
