The Essendon Football Club is a member of Australian Football League and is also known as "The Bombers". It refers to a bomber plane as is obvious from its insignia. Moreover it has been known by this name for over a hundred years.

After the recent terrorists attacks in London, there has been a serious suggestion that the name should be changed. An opposition coach has suggested "The Gliders" as a suitable alternative, which would be all very funny if it were not for the fact that I support that particular team.

"The Bombers" coach did not dignify the suggestion with a response. Which is to demonstrate that at least some of us can maintain our sense of proportion in these trying times.

Bombers over a hundred years ago? Yes, not quite. :D

The club formed in 1871.
But the name, "The Bombers", began to be used in 1922.

It'll pass BillyJoe...the New York Yankees are still called by their nickname "the Bronx Bombers" by the fans and sportswriters after 9/11.
