How long does Google keep old web pages searchable?

A while back someone posted some old Sylvia Browne predictions by using google even though she pulled her failed predictions offline. I was wondering how long does Google keep pages that have been modified or taken offline available in their original form? I searched Google for an answer, but found nothing probably due to my ignorance of the proper computer terms.
