View Full Version : Odd Firefox behavior

I was on the Meetup.com site, typing up a message to send to another person in the same meetup group, but everytime I hit the ' button, the ' would appear BUT ALSO, the "FIND" function popped up on the bottom of the screen!

It was the wierdest thing: I'd be typing along, and then bam, the FIND bar would appear, any text would be appearing in it.

So I killed firefox, and brought it up again. And the same thing was happening! So then I brought up IE, and it didn't suffer the problem. So then I rechecked with Firefox, and it was behaving normally again.

I've never seen anything like this behavior. I can't figure out how firefox would consistently mistake a ' for a control-f, especially after I killed it, and then started a new instance.

Well, according to Mozilla's 'help' site, it's a 'feature'

Find As You Type Link '

Looks like it only works in certain places. Not sure exactly how to turn it off.

I checked 'Options'; I don't have "Begin finding when you begin typing" checkmarked. So unless a web site can assume it's on, even though it's not....

Well, I created a user.js file, and added a tweak to it to hopefully turn off the 'feature' so it doesnt come on again.

// Find As You Type Configuration:
// Set this pref to false to disable Find As You Type:
user_pref("accessibility.typeaheadfind", false);

The find-as-you-type feature shouldn't be doing that when you're typing into a textbox.

What you're describing happens to me every so often (I'm using Mac OS X 10.4), and it is annoying as all hell. I've never worked out what makes it happen or what makes it stop, I suspect Firefox is getting confused about where the focus is.

Try clearing the cache.

Tools>Options>Privacy>Cache:Clear.

I'd make sure you have the latest version of firefox. If you do have the latest version, you can submit it as a bug.
