I have 4 vid files that I've been trying to watch that say they're (x)svcd files. None of the various players that I have will play them though. I think it might be not having the proper codec, but have no idea which one I should look for, or where.

It's really driving me crazy since they are the last 4 files regarding a certain Doctor, Who I'm very interested in.:p

Anyone have any solutions to my problem?

SVCD is a standard for encoding video onto a CD (in MPEG2 format, same as DVD) I would think that the files need to be transferred to a CD-R in some way.

Do these files have an .svcd extension, or something else?

If thery are svcd's there is a good chance that they are image files, Daemon tools will be able to mount allmost any image on a virtual drive, which you then watch with any media player.

as Doc dish said, tell us the file extension, that will help.

Well I managed to get to watch the files, but seem to have had to go through a lot more than I should have had to, and I'm not really sure how I did it.

After doing some searching I figured all I had to do was dl the MPEG-2 codec. I did that and the extracted to windows "system" file as was instructed in a read me file that came with the vids. This didn't seem to work because all I got was a scrambled picture when I tried to run the vid.

So then, again after much searching and reading, I dled a MPEG-2 decoder pack. This seemed to be what finally did it, but not sure.

I'm afraid it's one of those cases of an idiot stumbling on an answer but not knowing what the answer was.
:o

Now I'll have to decide whether or not to purchase the decoder pack after the trial period.:(

I wish people would just stick to uploading the files with the regular DivX, XviD, etc. My understanding of it all is limited though, so I imagine there's a reason why they don't.

Thanks for the replies attempting to help though. I know I must not have given enough info to make it easier to help. lol

If you can decode it, you can also re-encode it to a less irritating format. Really not a difficult process once you research it a little.

There is a free MPEG2 codec here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Stinky_MPEG_2_Codec.htm

I haven't used it, though so I can't vouch for it. The comments for it are mixed.

DVD playing software (such as PowerDVD, WinDVD) include a MPEG2 codec. Do you have any of these?
