As a lifelong Republican, I, and many others are going to dump this guy if he supports, and renews this weapons ban.

There is no chance Delay will let this bill out of committee.
Bush's support or opposition is a non-issue, and he knows it. Thus, it is a smart political play as it will avert negative press.

From the above article:
Gun-rights activists were also upset by the president's stance because it comes at a time when a new series of lawsuits against gun makers is being launched by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and others.
One retailer/activist, Concealed Carry Inc., of Oak Brook, Ill., has even begun a campaign to "cooperate with the NAACP" and is refusing to sell firearms to blacks.
"I am going to use the broad authority granted me as a federally licensed gun dealer to prevent straw purchases by denying sales to African-Americans. To insure fairness, there will be no exceptions," said John Birch, president of Concealed Carry Inc. He said he'll continue to ban sales to African-Americans "until the NAACP asks us to, at which point we will be pleased to resume sales."
My reaction is as follows:

I have a feeling Bush is paying lip service since he knows the bill will never make it to his desk.

And no doubt even if it does make it there, someone will have managed to amend it in such a way as to give him an excuse to veto it in spite of his current support for it. Its a way of gettiong cheap points with the gun control crowd without losing the pro-gun vote. If it ever reaches his desk he will have to decide between them but he will almost certainly have a way to make it not look inconsistent.
