I have been remiss in posting about our meetings (about a year's worth, I think). While I can't catch you up on what you've missed, I can tell you what's coming up this month (details below).

For November we're planning a discussion on facilitated communication, which again has been in the news locally and nationally with Doug Biklen (FC's biggest advocate) being appointed dean of the School of Education at Syracuse University. Biklen was invited to participate but, not surprisingly, declined. He shouldn't have. We're a nice bunch of people and are quite polite to those with whom we disagree.

And by the way, I have a piece on the evolution/creationism controversy that I just put on my blog this morning. If you're interested, stop by and leave a comment. I'm new to the blog world, but so far I'm enjoying it.

Here's what's planned for the September CNY Skeptics meeting:

Restorative Justice

Ed Minardo will be the speaker at our September meeting. Here is what he says about his talk:

"Our current, traditional criminal justice system features the offender as the primary client. The state assumes the role of the injured party and seeks to prosecute the perpetrator and administer punishment if guilt is established. Restorative justice is an orientation that views crime as an offense against human relationships. The stakeholders in a criminal act are the victim, the offender, and community representatives. Together these stakeholders participate in a process, which establishes facts, identifies the harm that was done and the ways in which healing can occur. Addressing victim needs, offender accountability, and community involvement present the opportunity for a more personal and relevant resolution to criminal acts."

Please join us Wednesday, September 21 at 7 PM at the Betts Branch Library.
