..by writing a letter to the editor for the first time in years. Been thinking about it for awhile, we've had a low-level debate going on at about the rate of 1-2 letters a week, and this week's ID proponent just hit the right buttons, so I wrote to the Huntsville Times:
KB notes in her letter of 19 September that “credible scientific evidence in favor of intelligent design abounds”. Unfortunately she then neglects to tell us where to find this abounding information.
Intelligent Design (ID) is based upon the premise that some things are so complex/so well designed that there must have been a ‘Designer’ who influenced the procedure. This is not evidence, this is philosophy. ID makes no predictions, is not flexible for future discoveries, and explains nothing except for a vague “Designer”, who is not detailed or explained (And if God is not the designer, something Intelligent Design advocates stay away from, then who designed the designer?)
Evolution is based on the discoveries and fossils that have been found before, during, and in the future. It predicted that we would find things out about how life evolves and that is what we have found (DNA). And like any good scientific theory, it evolves as more knowledge is gained. ID cannot.
I noted at the start that Ms. B had not provided her evidence. Allow me to provide a couple of places worthy of review: http://www.talkorigins.org and http://www.talkdesign.org/introfaq.html. I believe many may find these to be interesting tools for discussion.
I removed the letter writers name for privacy reasons.
I admit that I sent this with a little trepedation. Most of my friends and colleagues at work here in Alabama are quite conservative, and I coach a youth soccer team in a place where we can't practice on Wednesday evening because so many peopel are in Church. We'll see if I'm published and if anytone mentions it to me.
