sorrowful bearers of light
Sorry, this is apparently "Misunderstand Kopji Day" (or /month/year whatever). I'm starting to develop a complex over it but that's ok...
There is a popular misconception that unbelievers are somehow sad. I am much more happy and cheerful as an unbeliever but I do like creative people of all kinds. 'welcome'

Nope. None at all. They're all over at the Ellen Degeneres message boards discussing such weighty topics such as where's the cheapest place to buy flannel shirts and debating over who's hotter: Melissa Etheridge or Chastity Bono.
If I do happen to find one, though, I'll be sure to let you know. Right, Numenaster?;)

Hello all. I see that the idiocies of a certain class of audio hobbyists are sometimes grist for the mill here.
I've been in the hobby on and off for over 30 years and still am amazed and appalled at what has befallen what was once a pleasant, nerdy hobby for tech-minded (or at least tech wannabes - my category) music lovers.

Just signed up. Some very interesting stuff here and it's going to take forever to read it all!
Got very frustrated recently with a colleague who claimed Harry Potter encouraged satanism. Some people drive me crazy!
Anyway, just wanted to say hello - I'm a high school teacher in Melbourne (Australia).
I also have a question. I really like the look of the JREF T-shirts with the questions and answers on them - is there anywhere I can see what's on the yellow and what's on the white?

I cannot let 3 Newbies post without a response from anyone, you 3 are stuck with me.
RVW, welcome. There are many forumites into audio stuff here. Start with Fowlsound, he likes the attention.
RJB, hiya. Have any areas of interest? There are catagories for just about anyone here.
Lycanthrope, glad you could make it. I am too lazy to look up your name, but it reminds me of a werewolf for some reason. There is a thread out there where you explain your name and avatar.
What, you 3 don't have avatars yet? Get to 50 posts and then you can pick one. I'd prefer pornography, but you didn't hear that from me, and you could get banned. And no swearing.
If you have any questions, you can PM me, and I'll PM someone else for the answer, and PM you back.
Enjoy your stay.

Hello there Kat, and other new users...
As far as areas of interest, I would say I was mostly drawn to this site because of my interest in people who try to peddle homeopathic remedies, chiropractors, anything involved with health really. I've been working at improving my personal health alot over the last year, and I have a lot of trouble sorting fact from fiction sometimes in the personal care and diet industry. Everyone is out there to sell something. For instance, I'm interested in using natural products, but have trouble finding valid information on the benefits.
I also really enjoy reading the threads about debunking psychics and others claiming the paranormal.

I'm afraid that this means that Rip Van Woofer, RJBuckeye and Lycanthrope will have to battle to the death for the right to be named "Catch of the day".
You will be thrown into an arena armed with only a shiv and bound together by the wrists with a leather strap. The last newbie standing wins.

Don't worry, she means Occam's shiv. And by 'the wrists with a leather strap', she means 'a sense of amicable togetherness'.
You still have to eat the live goldfish, though.

And there is a section of the Forum dealing with the Challenge, if you want to get feedback from the folks here--but be warned, they will doubt you can do it and they will ask penetrating and at times sharp questions.
But if you can do what you claim, they can help you a lot in clairifying your test and skill.

Depends what you're going there for. I hiked to the top of Scarfell Pike once, and, lost in horizontal hail with inappropriate attire and a bunch of mates who were eight times fitter than me, I'd have given anything to be driven instead. But then I wouldn't be able to drop phrases like "I hiked to the top of Scarfell Pike once" into casual conversation.

Cuter? Or funnier? I certainly think a monkey/ape of any kind makes any form of entertainment better. Or for that matter, even if it wasn't meant as entertainment in the first place, it's still best when there's a monkey/ape involved (and the baby versions tend to be the best of the lot in this regard).

Weeeeell.... I will grudgingly admit that Foulsound is much funnier than a baby orangutan; especially when he runs around with his knuckles draging on the ground saying "Ook! Ook!" while flinging his poop at people. Hi-larious!!:D

Well, I’ve been reading the commentaries for about a year or so now. The JREF is in the top 3 of my favorite things, and I hope to be able to save up and attend TAM 5.
My most interesting story is that the, “Ghost Hunters,” from the Sci-Fi channel came to my video store. No, we were not haunted. They, being plumbers by day, needed footage of the stars plumbing for the show. The only problem was my store did not need any plumbing done, they faked fixing our...fixtures. Makes me wonder what else they faked...

Hi, dvdmix, welcome to the forum!
Your English is fine. It's much, much better than my Spanish! :D English is not an easy language to learn, IMHO, but if the purpose of language is to communicate, you're doing fine.
If you have any questions regarding the commentaries (:D) ask away. We don't bite here, well, not very much, anyway. If we can help, we will.

Go to TAM, uncy - it will change your life, I promise. You get to meet and talk to people who are at the top of their professions. I went to TAM3 and met Mr Randi, Penn & Teller, Michael Shermer, Phil Plait (the Bad Astronomer), Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Julia Sweeney, Joe Nickell and many more. You will also get to meet people you will know on this forum. There were over 60 at TAM3 and I'm told over 100 at TAM4.

Thank you all for the reactions
I will try to contact Scandinavian people, but I only can write in the Englisch language.
Hutch, in case of my gift I have to do an experiment with a heli, maybe you have a suggestion. I’m from Holland (Dutch) indead.
By doing several experiments with the Department of Defense (Explosive Exploration Commando) and the Department of Building and Roads and the Coast Guard in Holland I’ve shown to be able to find and trace objects in water and underground.
I developed a measuring method which makes it possible to trace for example fuel-tanks, pipeline-systems, oil-drums, bombs WW-II, corpses, bunkers, foundations, archaeologic and similar objects in water and underground. Another possibility is the tracing of ship- and planewrecks and sunken cars.
The detection is based on a natural measuring method: I work with rods.
As well as metal, wooden, plastic and stone objects, even on great depth in the underground and water, are to be find and trace by me. The power of my detection method is in the fact of that I can "show" objects, even if they lie on greater depth in the underground or on the bottom of water, in or under snow and ice.
With the detection speed I developed (between 3 and 10 miles/hour) it is as well as sure that it is possible to do detections with a helicopter. This is important for tracing in inhospitable territories, snow and ice fields. That’s the reason I want to do an experiment.
So, now you all know what I do.
Is there anybody who can tell me why I cannot mail to challenge@randi.org since I’ve told that I want to become a applicant and a claiment.
I great everubody sincerely

In Holland they call me a "DIGIBEET" that is the name of a person who don't has any idea how computers are working and even don't trust them. So better twice then none. I was bookkeeper and since the using of computers it's my opinion that they are not intelligent.
Goethe said that the human body is the biggest physical measuring instrument which exists, we just have to use the right senses and listen to the signals. So a computer is only a calculator.

LoetI'm a research scientist, I use computers all the time, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that computers are stupid, and are indeed merely calculators. The problem many people have with computers is trusting them too much. They're only as good as the person who programmed them.

Hello all,
I joined the forum last week, so I guess it's time to introduce myself. I'm a software engineer living in Austin, Texas. My real name is Thad Engeling. I decided to join the forum after having attended TAM4 this year. Since I met so many great people at TAM, and many of them were on this forum, I thought perhaps I should join with the hope of keeping some contacts.
My skeptical interests range over the usual topics - science and the misuse and abuse thereof by various factions, creationism/ID, religion, medical nonsense, psychic BS (we aren't allowed to use "bad" language, right?), etc. I was raise in a fundamentalist, charismatic Lutheran church, and I was a true believer until I went to college. Once I escaped the protective, blinding arm of religion, my natural curiosity led me gradually away. It was a difficult struggle giving up the comforts of a loving god, but through endless late night debates with my various friends, I worked my way towards an atheistic, humanistic viewpoint.
I've been an avid reader of Skeptical Inquirer and Skeptic magazine for several years now. My wife started reading my copies a couple years ago, which then led her to the JREF website, which then led us to attending TAM4. So now, here I am.
Outside of the skeptical world, my interests tend towards reading, computer games, Magic: the Gathering and other geeky card and board games, and music. I own about 6000 CDs.
Hopefully that's not to excessive an introduction. I look forward to reading and participating in the forum.

...[intro]...Welcome to the forum!
I was raised non-religiously but have quite recently joined a church with my wife. But it's a Unitarian Universalist church, so it's not like my story is a complete reversal of yours. What we sought was the comforts of a loving human community, not a loving omnipotent god.
There's plenty of opportunity for you to explore your skeptical interests here, so whenever you're ready, jump right on in!

You know... this used to be a respectable forum not to long ago for those of us true believers that knew for a fact that Bigfoot is real and presently living in a hippie commune in Clackamas, Oregon... that crop circles are the undeniable proof of the existence of reptilian aliens from the Beta Carinae star system... and that Elvis will soon decend from the heavens as the Second Coming.
Meh... I'm going to go watch the Sylvia Brown marathon I have TiVo'ed... mumblemumble....:nope:

Without looking at the FAQ, my guess is that it is related to the fact you must have at least 50 posts before you can have an avatar. Or you must have at least 50 friends. I can never remember. Oh, it must be 50 posts, cause I have an avatar...

Well, after lurking on the boards for a while I figured I would finallly get an account and introduce myself.
I am currently in the US Army serving in Korea, I strongly believe in skepticism and critical thinking, I love what the JREF does, and I enjoy a good debate now and then.
Beyond that, I can't think of a darn think remotely interesting to say. Other than Hello. :D

I lurked for a long time, and finally made my first post earlier today.
I am a web designer by day and make bad jokes as a hobby. Although, I won't bring down the JREF with any of them.
OK, well, maybe once in awhile.
Other than that....hello.

she can heal people through Jesus.her nam is Lorraine Louvat. My family and i attended a healing mass at which several " miracles" occured. She lives in Maine, and says god spoke to her at age four, and said she would have the
divine gift of healing at some time in the future. She went to rome with her bishop, and met with Padre Pio,and he told her the same.I have looked for info about Ms.Louvat on the web and there isn't much on it pertaining to her.has any one ever heard of her? Howdy dawn (you confuse me, is that meant as the dawn of masculinity or you're a girl named dawn with hormone issues? ;) :p :)
As for your question, I think that if you post it on either the Religion or the Paranormal subforum (pick one, double-posting is frowned on by the mods) you may get some good info back.
As to the possibility that Ms. Louvat can perform healings, I would recommend reading James Randi's (you may have heard of him) "The Faith Healers", 20 years old but still a very good resource.

I'm from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. I've been a skeptic for the best part of my life (even though I was born and raised a catholic). I'm of the "I won't believe it unless I see good evidence", persuasion, so don't believe in any of the current crop of Woo Woo stuff, oh, except for Fairies of course.
Now if I could just learn how to post pictures containing my subliminal messages. MWAAHAHAHAA cough cough croak ahem

Hi everyone!!...
I,until last year was taken in by all the psychic twaddle and actually worked in a new age shop, thankfully the inevitable time came when I realised what a load of old toss it it was and I am very proud to be a evangelical atheist and anti paranormal.........
I, for one, would love to hear about your experience of working in a new age shop. How you would give advice and the process of realizing what you were saying? How serious do you think people are when they would come in and shop for crystals, etc. What provoked your "conversion" insight. (assuming these questions are relevant for you)
oh, and welcome!

Hi, I'm BlackCat. I don't normally introduce myself on forums, but I figured since I might actually post instead of lurk that I should introduce myself.
I used to subscribe to religious beliefs, in particular, Christianity, a few years ago, but it fell apart when I logically and critically looked at the religion. Since then, I've become an avid atheist, and have tried to get other people in my life to look at their religious/supernatural/paranormal beliefs critically.
It's funny, because I didn't start out being against supernatural stuff until last year, when I read The Demon-Haunted World, and started watching Penn & Teller's ********!. I was always skeptical about "woo," but I didn't actively speak out when others would talk about it. Now, I do.
I like to think I'm pretty smart, but from what I've seen while lurking, my knowledge doesn't really match that of others. Fortunately, I love to learn, and have already learned a lot here.
Hope to see you around!

It's all done through smoke and mirrors, really. You would be surprised at just how easily it is to sound like an expert on every topic you state your opinion just by having the right avatar.
Just look at mine, for example... I could declare right now that the moon in made of cheese, and no-one would ever even think to tell me I'm wrong, because as we all know, baby orangutans never fib. I mean, just look at it's cutsie-wootsie widdle face! Is that the kind of face that would lie to you?:)
Now as for Spidey13's avatar... that just practically screams "I'm a shifty-eyed con artist"....:p

Hi everyone. I've been eavesdropping on this forum for a few months, so I thought it was about time I stuck my head out from behind the couch and startled you all half to death.
Okay, now that the heartrates have subsided a little, my basic intro - I'm a skeptic (of course), a computer geek, a private pilot, a campanologist and singer. I make a living by breaking things and then pointing out that they're broken, which is normally discouraged but I've got away with it thus far.
Although I currently live in the US, I am a fair dinkum true-blue skip sheila (translation: genuine Australian female), so if you would be so kind as to read my posts with an Aussie accent, I'd be much obliged. Thanks.

Still finding my way around here. I know there is a 15 post min. for attachments. Does that apply to sigs as well? Couldn't find that option on the CP.

I love to read here, but I am afraid to get hooked. Every time I check in I sit for hours and hours...
Basics: Male/38/Norwegian/working in US/skeptic since the day I was born (Sorry can't prove it)
I wave goodbye for the first time of many, admitting that I got a lump in my throat listening to Randi's soundbites from the hospital. I read Flim-flam as a kid, had the pleasure of attending a session with him at University in Norway 15 years ago, and regard him as one of my biggest heros in life.
Now I'd like to find a "get well soon" thread here on the forum and post my 2nd.
Then maybe one day I'll have enough posts to sprite up my avatar...

Come now, let's apply Occam's Razor here. Which is the simpler explanation - that you fooled them by wearing some sort of fur coat, or that convergent evolution produced wombats independently on opposite sides of the globe, despite which, no-one has noticed any wombats in the UK throughout tens of thousands of years of human history, apart from some blurry photographs and unreliable witness claims?
Sir, I put it to you that you are lying. Lying, in fact, as armadillos are famous for doing on Internet Forums. The fact that you seem to have gained yourself some respect and power around here counts for nothing when you have gained it on the basis of a false premise.
To everyone else - I'm sorry. I know this may come as a shock. But sometimes it just takes a fresh pair of eyes and an objective viewpoint in order to see what has been in front of you all along.

Um, hello everybody. I've been reading the SWIFT column for a while now, and thought I would try to participate in the board. I try to remain as skeptical as possible while still being religious. (...I think I said to much... hey, look over there!)

Hi folks,
A truly exasperating conversation at the weekend has prompted me to finally participate in the forums. I've been reading SWIFT for many years, but am now becoming rather fed up with being treated like a freak because I don't believe in astrology or the latest healing fad.
** and breath **
So, hi! I'm looking forward to chatting with other people who at least consider critical thinking. In time I hope to discuss how best to handle the true believers, learn new things, and have a little fun in the process.

Hello to everyone,
:)
After years of reading SWIFT I too decided to join the forum. I am looking forward to learn a great deal from all of you.
I was what you might call a closet skeptic. Born a Catholic I went from being a Bible carrying born-again Baptist Christian (some 20 odd years ago) to an atheist-bright-skeptic. But I feel very much alone at times, nowadays it seems that most of my friends (including my family and my wife!) are believers in one sort or another of supernatural new-ageish thing and I have more or less restrained myself to contradict them for many years up until recently when I started to become more and more vocal about this nonsense,. Anyway I am pretty sure I am not the only one in this situation. I am hoping to use this forum to further my knowledge and get better arguments when I talk with my woo-woo friends ( I love them anyway :) )
Mt first language happens to be french even though my english is fairly good so I will apologize only this once for my spelling errors.
Looking forward to some stimulating exchanges,
Dogdoctor

Greetings, one and all! I just noticed this thread, or I would have posted earlier. Ranson is to blame for my presence on this forum, since he kept sending me links to such excellent stuff and goings-on. So if I offend, blame him! :duck:

Hi All!
This is my first post on the JREF forum.
I was brought up a Catholic and being quite active in the Church (The local group of Church’s of various denominations were VERY laid back and surprisingly open about alternate beliefs.) when I entered the “real” world :jaw-dropp and found out quickly that the greater scope of religion ended up being quite different from what I was brought up to think. (I also attended EVERY alternate religious gathering during collage to find out what the other “faiths” offered . . Not much . . but it did strengthen my critical thinking and data gathering skills :D )
I have been an avid Skeptic and have been since I dropped the religious madness and started with various sciences, learned some history and human psychology . . I came to the conclusion that people though out history LOVE to mislead themselves and others. (Again history is a wonderful teacher) The only defense is to learn as much as I could and be Skeptical of what others have said! Basically, most people are full of it! :oldroll:
I always has a experimental aspect and designed for fun and possably insight some “real evidence” for a UFO (A photograph) to show how easy it was to
1. spoof the expert know-it-all’s on UFO’s
2. how easy it is to get “followers” (really scary!)
3. (this was found out during the exercise) How pathological people can get over this crap. Ie they did not believe it when I happily did revealed it was all an experiment and it was all fake. I am a photographer and computer artist on the side and I DO good work . . too good it seems.
Now Many years later . .
I am a fan of Penn and Teller, Randi and even Myth busters for there fight over “common knowledge” Myths
A the moment the mumbo-jumbo Family members and the people I work with “beleave” in is driveling me crazy on a regular basis and this is a good place to feel welcome. (I have just “did the math” to prove to my Father that the earth did not grow ~40% due to accretion of space dust . . as some wackos have stated on there websites . . The morons never “did the math” ?!?! BTW ~66cm of dust over 4.5 billion years ;) )
It is good to find Randi’s site and this forum!

Once again I am all called upon to answer three consecutive Newbies. Hutch and Orangutango must be back at Freecell or selling stuff on Ebay.
Coralius. I hold you accountable for all your actions. You blame Ranson if you'd like. That's just how it works around here. Welcome.
William Meegan. Nice first post, short, to the point, and polite. Other posters could learn a lesson here, but I won't name names. They know who there are. Welcome.
Ta erog. Cool name. Interesting stuff. Care to give us a picture of your handiwork?
There are rules as what you can do here until you have made 50 posts (e.g. avatars and links to other pages.) so be patient.
All in all, I think we have a great new class of Freshman. Now do my laundry.

So, this thing on?
Hello, folks. My name's Jason. I'm an office manager by day and graphic designer/artist by night, with an affinity for science fiction. I've been a skeptic about as long as I can remember, and it's absolutely terrorized my dogmatic irish catholic father and my self-healing spiritalist Noni Juice drinking mother, but somehow I've made due. I love reading Swift and decided to finally join the forums.
I've always had a strong interest in the past, particularly the celtic civilization and its ties to the other developing cultures of the European and eurasian continental region.
At the completely opposite end of the spectrum, I have developed an interest in recent years in theoretical astrophysics, quantum theory, and most anything involving something beyond material nature as it is currently understood.
Anyhow, that's about my entire piece for this thread.
Howdy.
Jon.

Not really, but man, that's one tough load to secure. And you can't tighten the straps too much, otherwise, they chafe.

Greetings, one and all.
I have not been sent by the people who really run the world to monitor you all, I'd like to make that perfectly clear. I mean, they're not even really people.
I've been viewing with skepticism for a lot longer than I really knew there was a term for it, which irritated my...well, just about everyone, really. And so at last, I have come in from the metaphorical cold.
I look forward to obfuscating and circumlocuting in order to show the facts in sharp relief. And to using words like that in sentences.
As an atheist and general skeptic, I have a great love of conspiracy theories and new-agey woo-woo because I think, of my great faith in humanity. I have faith that human beings, acting in concert, can resoundingly botch any cooperative project, no matter how simple or obvious, and then blame it on someone else. Clearly an effect of natural selection.
I'll be around.

Hello everybody!
I'm a skeptical Pagan, and thought that it's about time I joined this community.
I've dealt with my fair share of nutters. I've been told by too many people that I am an "Indigo", I had someone call me a "stoner" & "drug addict" because I use prescription medication to tread my Attention Deficit, and I've even heard grandiose claims such as "I am God and I have created World Peace and ended Hunger!" and "I predicted September 11th!". Needless to say, I believe that I need to instill a lot more skepticism in my students than most Pagans do.
I'm currently attending college at the University of Advancing Technology working on getting a BA in video game design.

Welcome Longstreet, are you named after a Civil War General or a Blind Police detective? (only two other Longstreets I've ever heard of)
Just be careful with those big words--there are lots of folks here armed with dictionaries and are not afraid to use them.
And welcome morningstar, a skeptical Pagan will fit right in on this forum--somewhere (I think zaaydragon is skeptical pagan, but it may be somebody else I'm thinking of)
