I used to hang at nightly a lot, then the straight dope. Just found this place though. It's pretty cool here, not so many id***, I mean conspiracy theorists and homophobic sods. One can discuss something without being flamed for thinking things like evolution is a possibility/fact, etc.

Less crap information, you know.

Thanks for the welcome

:)

I'm on a posting spree! I'm bored at work and thought I'd just pop in here for awhile. Welcome to all the new people...not that I've read this thread past around page 3....nor am I a very frequent poster...oh well.

Sorry to Interrupt. Please go about your business.

I suppose I should introduce myself to all these nice folks here ...

I came upon this forum because I was looking for something to tease my brain with, and so I ended up in the puzzles section.

This is the first forum I've posted on since the DrDrew.com forum went kinda dead. Back there I posted mostly on the religion section, where we enjoyed shredding the occasional biblethumping fundie troll intent on saving our souls and unwilling to listen to our arguments. I loved thumper-thumping :D

I think I like all the rational people here, who seem to want to get to the bottom of a problem/mystery instead of opting out and going with the easy supernatural explanation.
I guess the puzzles section is where I'll be spending most of my time.

Can't think of anything else to add, really....

This is a really classy site, isn't it? Been posting on and off for a while, but never really got into all the social chit-chatting....

might as well give a bit of info on myself. I believe in God, it's people I doubt. Am 62 years old, retired (ex-fireman, festival organizer, restuaranteer), a loner (twice widowed), I live on my own in an old farmhouse fifteen miles from any semblance of community or civilisation. I first found this site two years ago by doing a search on magic and promptly forgot about it until about eight months later when I did another search on my brother (he's a well known writer who has several fans and twice that number of critics among the forum members) and, for reasons known only to search engines, was taken to this forum and a thread about LOTR that mentioned my brother. That was when I began reading various threads with great interest, enjoying many but also finding some to be asinine. There are many here whose thoughts and ideas are either brilliant, enlightening or downright hilarious. What made me post was simply to alleviate some of the boredom that's known to set in when you spend all your time with dogs, chickens and several bottles of beer.

You sound like my kinda guy (except maybe for the god part but enough beer and we can wipe that out), are you anywhere near Texas?(wink, wink, nudge, nudge) ;)

And hi everybody, I've been lurking for a long time, used to post a lot in the beginning (I too remember Bigfig's first post and even De_Bunks!), but got involved in other things.

sorry Sasha, I'm miles away from Texas, I'm not even in the states anymore though I do have a grandson in Miami who has just recently learned of the benefits of drinking beer, if that helps.

Hello everyone.

You can call me Phil, since that's what I go by on this board. I'll admit though, that's not how I'm known to my family, nor is that the name whispered in my ear on occasion in the heat of the night.

I have been posting on the forum for a few months now, but never had a chance to introduce myself formally in this thread. And I'm just not in the mood to do any work today, so here I am.

I've been a skeptic all of my adult life, and a JREF member for a couple of years now. Attended TAM1, and am hoping to attend TAM2.

Up to just recently, I was reading the forum regularly, but never had enough time to join and post (lame excuse number 1). I was always too busy working (lame excuse number 2), or playing which I fit a lot of into my daily routine. Still a kid at heart, I guess.

Anyway, it's great to be a part of such an intelligent community. I look forward to making many more friends here.

Hello.

I've been lurking and occasionally posting for a few months now.

I can't remember what link I followed to find JREF but I certainly have been a fan of Randi's for many years.

I don't post very often because there just seems to be so many articulate members here who beat me to everything I want to say and usually say it so much better.

As an amateur astronomer I meet a lot of people at star parties and public observing sessions and I often hear a lot of nonsense being repeated by ill-informed individuals. I find a lot of ammunition in the form of links, quotes and very articulate statements/explanations in Swift and a number of the threads on this forum.

Yes, I do love my avatar and I'm happy to explain her. It's not a copyrighted picture, so I'm not risking any legal actions on the part of anyone by using her.

It's a reclining woman with crossed legs. I chose the avatar for a few reasons. One, it's a fabulous picture. Two, it's a close representation of my own legs. :) Three, I thought it would be fun to have her represent me on a skeptic board. And, yes, I like to cause a ruckus wherever I go. ;)

I'm glad that you have discovered more interesting sections other than the puzzles section. :D

Welcome again, to the forum! :D

Welcome to the forum, Blondin! So, where does your name come from? Are you familiar with one of our members, The Bad Astronomer? He has written a book that debunks a lot of those statements that you may be hearing at your star parties. It's a great book and very entertaining. I encourage you to check it out and also check out his forum at http://www.badastronomy.com.

And no, I'm not his publicity agent, but I am his number one stalker. ;)

Oh, yes, G6. I am very familiar with Phil Plait's site. In fact I can't remember if I first linked to JREF from there or the other way around. One of these years I hope to make it to TAM and possibly meet Phil (and Randi of course).

Guess I should introduce myself. I started out in the Religion and Philosophy forum. I'm currently entrenched in the Puzzle section. Which isn't really surprising since I've been a semi-regular poster on rec.puzzles for seven or eight years now. Unfortunately, the rest of the board intimidates me.:)

Not sure how I found this site. Probably a link in the Snopes message board forum. Once I found Randi's commentaries I made a point of going back and reading all of them. That was well over a year ago. As you can see, it took me a while to venture into the forums.

I've been a skeptic for a few years now (after being raised in one of the Mediterranean death cults), and I've been getting pretty hardcore about it (the skepticism, that it) only this year.
I usually read Randi's weekly commentary, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before I scrolled down and clicked on the "forum" link, but after hearing such good things about you friendly folk, I stopped procrastinating and joined.

OK. I've been lurking here for about six months, but now I have decided to jump in.

I'm a long-time fan of Randi. I remember listening to him on WMCA in New York City, first on the Long John Nebel show (that's going way back) and also on his own show (that didn't last very long as I recall).

I have also been reading and often buying Randi's books for decades.

You can find out more about me by looking at my profile, but here is a bit about me by way of introduction.

<blockquote>
In the seemingly sleepy little Chicago suburb of ******** there are places whence the mind does not return. Places where even the most plaintive cries for help go disbelieved. In such a place stands Abdul Alhazred. He is tall, dark haired and well muscled, but with the sleepy eyes and loose mouth of the confirmed degenerate. An hideous rictus of utter imbecility mars his otherwise not unhandsome countenance. His manner and bearing exemplify the wretched lineaments of his despised and beaten race. A loud, low-pitched moron-laugh escapes his lips as his soul screams in horror through the empty corridors of his mind.

Hello Everyone,

Some of you already know me, but I suppose I might as well introduce myself to everyone.

I've been sucked into this Forum through my mom, Kittynh (I'm her eldest "kitten"). While I'm mostly attending to mom's duties here while she's down and out, I'm started to become interested in the forum myself and may stick around. Could lead to some interesting mother-daughter catfights, could it not? For now, though, mom is sick, so I must be nice.

As for my life when not taking care of sick mommy, I'm a college student working on a double major in Geology and Arabic. I love being outside and spend much of my free time whitewater kayaking, rock climbing, and hiking. I've always been very curious about the natural world and science, and my parents have raised me to ask questions and demand logical explanations for all I learn about the world.... I suppose that makes me a skeptic, doesn't it?

That's about all for now.

-Kitten-

About time I introduced myself, I guess, as I've been registered for ages (not that I've posted much). I am a 'resting' science teacher from the NE of England and have been pretty skeptical all my life, mostly thanks to having been born on a Friday 13th......

As a kid -
"Oooooohh, you must be really unlucky."
"Not really"
"But you were born on Friday 13th"
"Yeah"
"Friday 13th's really unlucky."
"Oh well, I'm not."

As an adult -
"Oooooohh, are you unlucky?"
"No"
"I bet if you really thought about it, you'd find you were unluckier than most. Have you ever won anything big [or some other BS]?"
"Nope, and neither have most people. But I do have a good job, a happy marriage, two great kids, etc."
"Oh, being born on Friday 13th must make you lucky"
"P*** off"

Honestly, when you're born can affect your life - it can put you right off being superstitious from an early age.

Well, I've been around for most of the summer, so perhaps I should say a bit about myself...

1) I'm a middle aged "stay at home" mom of three kids

2) I used to actually be an engineer... though if I went back to work the Human Resources folks believe I have forgotten everything and I would be a tech-aide at half the price... one of my "round-to-its" is to go back to school (especially to understand what JJ and Dr. Stupid have been discussing, I used to use some statistics to analyze random vibrations in structures... now I have been reminded how much I HAVE forgotten!).

3) I used to be an Army brat... which means when you ask me the question "Where are you from?"... I stare at you quizzedly and ask at what particular time you mean... it also means I graduated high school from the 11th school I attended (4 of those were before 2nd grade). Just today I was asked where I got my "accent"... it seems to come from learning Spanish at a certain stage of my life (though I doubt if I could carry on a conversation in anything but English).

4) Once upon a time I used to belong to CSICOP... but budget cutting after turning from a "Double Income No Kids" to "Single Income with Kids" cut out such things (plus, I found the Skeptical Inquirers were piling up without being read). I found my way back to the skeptical websites after trying to battle the alt-med folks at a listserv which pertains to one child's communication disorder.

5) My family likes to play games... from computer games like Sims, Warcraft, Masters of Orien, to Dungeons and Dragons and other games. I do not. I prefer to spend time on forums (I participate in about 4... including a sewing forum and the Ratbags.com forum).

6) I live in a house with 5 computers... one per family member. I am married to a computer nerd... and he is an ex-Canadian. When I give blood I answer many of the questions on sexual activities with "No, I am married to a Canadian computer nerd. We are very boring"

7) My hobbies include sewing, geneology, school PTA, reading and gardening... we live in house known in hte neighborhood as the "house with the apple tree fence". I am only just finding out about my family history, and have am learning there are skeletins in the closet. I sometimes help the school and PTA by sewing costumes for plays and the annual auction.

I've just written this after 3 lovely glasses of wine. So please do not hold this against me.

Hello Hydrogen Cyanide! I think you wrote quite well after 3 glasses of wine! :) I also see that you have a LOT going on in your household! I'm amazed that you get a chance to spend any time with us.

It's really great to have yet another skepchick on board here! We are in the minority here but I think our presence is really appreciated by the guys. :)

Welcome to the forum!

Thank you... what I do is sneak in on my very slow laptop when the rest of the household are playing some computer game (including one that had some kind of killer cows!).

But only for a bit... it beats laundry.

Hi there, everyone!

Sorry I overlooked this thread at first. Thereīs a lot to see here...

Well, Iīm Chaos. Or at least I like to be called that - makes for a lot of funny misunderstandings: "Itīs all chaos around here." "Yeah, go on. Just keep blaming me...":rub:

I really look forward to lots of discussion here. Iīm not a native English speaker, though, so youīll have to forgive me if I make mistakes sometimes. (Just be glad you donīt have to put up with my accent as well...;) )

(feeling like I should be hopping a la Truly, Madly, Deeply). I'm a Scot, lived there until 25, moved to England 20 years ago but keep the accent. Been aware of Randi for some time beore I found this site. Interested in computing, SF, martial arts, language and various other things some of which I have a reasonable knowledge of and some not. Getting married again in 2 weeks (who says skeptics are cynics). Get amazed at people who can look at this world and think it's lacking something so they need to pretend it's something else. Still in mourning for "Calvin & Hobbes".
I suppose I should also make my side clear on the great debate topic : dogs.

Well, now and then I realize I donīt know a word I would use in german, and I have to "phrase around it". I think it shows very much sometimes - but then, I am always my own harshest critic.

And, concerning accents, in Hollywood movies, only the bad guys ever have german accent  (or arabic accent, for that matter).

Hello Chaos.

It's nice to have you here...errrrr... as a member and not as a status :D

Of course you will receive comments about the way you use the language. If such an event occurs you have two option: you either bring it to my attention and I will send my beloved pets to take care of the matter or you ask the nice member who made the comment to type something equally right in German :D

Wudang is a range of mountains in China and is the reputed home of several internal martial arts. It means "match the warrior" and is the name of the tai chi style I train in. I also use it on the stardock websites.

Sorry Girl 6, dinner was served. I stumbled across the JREF some years back while looking for info on CSICOP. I was engaged in an argument with someone who claimed they could use "empty force" (action at a distance) and someone on rec.martial-arts posted me a copy of the Skeptical Enquirer which cover Randi's visit to China. Useful ammo in there for me. Our visit to the "empty force" master got a brief mention in SI as well.

I first read about Mr. Randi in...wait...ī97, I think, in a book by Carl Sagan; he wrote about that Carlos story Mr. Randi did with the "60 minutes" (or was it "90 minutes") TV show in Australia(?). Sorry, that was long ago (6 years is almost a quarter of my lifetime!)

Then, a few days ago, read in another forum about the JREF website, remembered that old story (I think the book title was "Candle in the Dark" or something like that), and decided. I came across this forum, and the rest, as they say, is history :D

@Cleopatra:
Thank you. Try to keep your pets hungry, just in case...

And youīre right. Folks, if I do anything wrong, just tell me. If you want to taunt me, taunt me in German, else Iīll ignore it :p But on the other hand, you certainly wonīt, because we are all civilized people, arenīt we?

Hello all,

I've been an intermittent lurker for some time, but would like to start jumping into the discussions more. I've been questioning some of the political beliefs that I grew up with, and I'm looking forward to having you JREFers challenge my thinking.

I've always been your garden-variety touchy-feely/bleeding-heart/peacenik/progressive/liberal type. Now I want to sort out what part of that mindset comes from values and what part comes from assumptions about reality and the way the world works -- and then to figure out how accurate those assumptions are.

This forum is the only place I know where I might actually get useful feedback, rather than either a chorus of "me too!" or a torrent of abuse.

In other news, "selvedge" is a weaving term. Literally a "self edge," it's where the threads draw together on the sides of the cloth to make a strong edge that doesn't unravel. Any other weavers around here?

What else can I tell you about myself? I'm small, harmless, smarter than I look, and almost (but not quite) as naive as I sound. I don't make as much time for research as I should, but I recognize and appreciate good research when I see it. My sense of humor tends toward the dry side & doesn't always translate well to print -- if you're not sure, look for the winking smiley. ( ;) )

I'm a lifelong atheist -- at least I thought I was before I started reading this forum. (Now I'm not sure if I'm a weak atheist, a strong atheist, a Bright, a TLOP worshipper, a materialist. . . jeez, around here, not believing in god is so complicated that I'm considering converting to a religion just to make things simpler. ;) ) I'm female, but would really prefer not to be called a "chick." I prefer the term "skeptiger." ;)

Looking forward to yakking with you all,

--Selvedge

P.s. Would one of you kind folks fill me in on how to add an avatar? I checked the FAQ but didn't see any instructions. Thanks!

Hey, I guess I'm not a newbie anymore, so I can say the 'newbies' sound really interesting!

Welcome all, and I look forward to seeing where you all post.

I love your sense of humor already Jallenecs! Call me when you want to do the crop circle, I've been itching to do one and see the response for years :D

I have the string, the sticks, the boards (different sizes for creativity), and a few other things I found on the list of things needed to really make a good one :D

I've always wanted to take some christmas lights and a blow torch, and make a really good 'landing' site too, on like new year's eve when everyone's nice and drunk and will really see the chrismas lights as 'there' and then 'gone' when I plug them in and unplug them. :wink8:

Well I'm not exactly new, since I've been lurking around for some time now, but I don't think I ever introduced myself in this thread so I'll just do it now.

I'm TwoShanks, real name "Jon". The nickname is something I've been using for a few years, first came up with it for internet gaming. I'm a physics student in my third year (of four) of a masters degree. I'm in the UK, originally from Wales but studying in Lancaster, England.

I learned about the JREF from a friend after his father gave him a copy of "Flim Flam", and since I've always enjoyed a bit of argument about religion, psychics, etc, I decided to hang around the boards. Hopefully I can provide more than a few comments now and then, I'll do my best.

hello, I am extra sensory potato. I have psychic abilities on a par with those of Uri, Sylvia, etc. I only give free readings and psychic demonstrations and only when the beer bottles are alligned.
Am tired of arguing about woo-woo beliefs as I rented a cottage from a woman who was upto her neck in astrological books and friends, we argued over everything but there's no convincing lapsed Catholics. Found this site after seeing Randi on Larry King for the third time.
Best trick to play on an astrologer is to go see one and say you're an orphan, unsure of when you were born, can hazard a guess at the year but have no way of being sure about the month or day, though you would like to know, more than anything, when your birthday is. Then try getting the astrologer to agree to divine your birthday if you told her all about your life/habits/abilities,etc.

Hey Girl 6,

I think I may have stumbled on the JREF site while looking for critical thinking sites (back when I was in academia trying to enlighten the masses.) Or I may have heard about it at a convention a few years ago, where I heard talks by some folks from CSICOP and by the incredibly classy Michael Shermer.

I don't remember now for sure, but in any case, I'm glad to be here! Thanks for the welcome! :)

Hi there,
I finally got up the nerve to introduce myself. Some nerve, huh? I've been attending the Skeptics Society meetings in Los Angeles, which I find quite enjoyable. From there I learned of the upcoming TAMII which I wasn't planning to attend except that an acquaintance of mine kept mentioning it and so when I really looked at what it's all about I thought "That just sounds like way too much fun to miss". So I've signed up for that and started browsing around the forum, lurking, then registering, then lurking some more and finally inserting a comment here and there. I'm very shy and I find that I'm still shy when it comes to the forum but I'm really enjoying all of your commentaries. I've noticed that no matter how serious a thread starts out, it always degenerates into joking and puns and I enjoy that. Sorry, SquishyDave but most people DID vote FOR puns. It would be really nice to meet some of you punny people at the Skeptics meetings (I believe the next one is Oct 26) and at TAMII. Don't worry, I do much better one-on-one (less shy). :)

Alright, I've been posting for a week or two, I guess it's time to get the introductions out of the way.

I've read JREF on and off for about a year, work has been slow recently so I've needed something to do thus the recent postings.

My boyfriend is a somewhat regular poster, or has been in the past but is currently distracted. I won't say who he is because I don't want you all to count that against me ;)

I live in Chicago, sell insurance for a living, but am looking for something DRASTICALLY different.

I'm rather skeptical, always have been. Though, I don't concider it skeptical so much a reasonable. Never bought the concept of God. Don't believe in metaphysics or the like.

I love joking and kidding. Sometimes my jest can be mistaken. I never mean to hurt feelings, but I might. I appologize proactivly. I'm pretty much an open book, ask what you like.

Happy posting!!!

I really suck at self intro so I thought this might be one way to provide a little insight into what I'm like.

If you are into Astrology...I'm Scorpio
If you are into numerology....My life path is #7
If you are into Tarot.....my court card is The Queen of Cups
If you are into I ching.....I am both male and female...or maybe I have that confused with the Jungian anima-animus stuff *shrug*
Kabalarian Philosophy says I might suffer from constipation....do you suppose that's just their way of saying I'm anal ? :D
The Enneagram puts me in the Head Center as a #5 with a stress point of #7 and a security point of #8 but now that I think about it, the Kabalarians must be crazy cause when it's time for #2....I don't hold nothin' back .. know what I mean *grin*

I have not developed a preference for any single school of thought as of yet and doubt that I will because I enjoy a little of everything I suppose you might say. Other than that, I'm just me.

I just found this forum a few days ago, via a link to one of the commentaries that was posted on DU (Democratic Underground) -- we've got a few skeptics over there, but they seem to have given up the battle, so to speak, with the astrologer community. (Not that any of that stuff is the main focus of DU anyway...but I digress...)

I'm a grad student working on my PhD in anthropology (specializing in paleoanthropology). I tend to post very little and lurk/read more -- I usually don't have much time to spend on boards and don't like to give the impression that I've abandoned a discussion.

This looks like a good forum so far...I look forward to getting involved in some discussions!

I love those awkward questions -- although there's so little evidence for some of them that we tend to just go round in circles :-). Not sure I get the "pig-proof helmet" reference -- unless it has something to do with Raymond Dart's osteodontokeratic theory (there's some great footage of him doing a fake "hominid attack" with a hemimandible...lol).

Well P13, it was a while ago.
As I recall, Richard Leakey was claiming considerable antiquity for a particular skull (I think it was 1470) but others disagreed. It all depended on which stratum the fossil was found in relation to some pig teeth. A meeting was held on site and one guy turned up in what he claimed was a "pig-proof" helmet. It was all about 25 years ago.
I have to say my interest is purely amateur and was sparked by a friend of my fathers, Michael Day, professor of anatomy at St Thomas's hospital in London. A very nice bloke!
Anyway, enjoy yourself on the forum!

Glad to be here among fellow skeptics. I found this place many months ago & have been reading Randi's commentary ever since.

I haven't posted here before, mainly because I've been hanging out at IIDB. I have a lot of free time at work, so I found the discussions there very educational, and at least gave me something to do during the day.

Well, today I tried to log on and obviously the "chat room" demon had tracked me down. No longer did I have access to the fora.

So, I tried y'all. Grace be to Zeus, you guys are still under the radar. So now I'll be hanging out here - until they catch me again.

I'm what most would call a weak atheist. Married, childfree, mainly involved with my dogs, my homestead (4+ acres in the high desert mountains of CA), and whatever toys we decide to play with at the time.

I have been lurking around today and have noticed quite a few familiar faces from IIDB.

Thanks for a new place to hang out!

It's a technical definition.

A weak atheist is a person who lacks a belief in the existence of any god, and who does not embrace a belief in the nonexistence of gods.

There's nothing intrinsically *weak* in weak atheism, that's just what it's called. Weak atheists don't lack nerve, either. Many weak atheists are non-cognitivists, i.e. people who assert that the notion of god is too nonsensical to be the topic of a belief for or against it.

For or against? Just not believing in gods doesn't mean being against them for others. I'm against what some do in a god's name, but I don't care what people worship. I guess that makes me a weak atheist too. I never assumed atheists were 'against' gods, I just thought atheist meant not beleiving in the one christian god.

I'm still learning.

Strong atheists, for the most part, do promote a "there is no god" attitude. I just don't see any evidence one way or the other. And that goes for all gods, not just the xtian one.

Thanks Drmatt for your wonderfully eloquent definition.

And there's also a difference between believing god does not exist, and not believing in god (apparently).

It's semantics, but one is believing god doesn't exist as much as christians believe god does exist, while the other is simply thinking god has no relevance, existing or not. There was a discussion about that a while back, and the conclusion was that one is atheism, the other is agnosticism, if I remember correctly?

Uhoh, I'm gonna get thwacked on the head again!

Yes, my daughter is cute and sweet, but now none of my kids will be able to go to college cause my bank account is in the negative every month cause childcare for 3 kids takes $1200.00 dollars a month from my $1500.00 a month take home pay. My bills can't be paid with $300.00/mos. And yes, I got $300.00 a month childcare subsidy so that I could keep that measly 300 dollars from my paycheque (which is actually high for what subsidy is available in this province).

If I stay home then I won't even get the $300.00 and we've seen what that's like already ***shudders***.

I'd have to beg off as 1) I try not to give out specific legal advice for ethical and malpractice insurance reasons and 2) I have about zero idea how the civil law system works in Canada.

In general, from what I remember in U.S. law, most jurisdictions will not allow a lawsuit for an accidental birth, even due to negligence, on the general moral principle that there are no damages, as life is some sort of blessing. Always struck me as slightly irrelevant moralizing, as it seems a simple matter that someone's negligence is creating an expense, but that is a topic for another thead.

Totally what I've heard all along. Who the heck is going to feel sorry for me? I may feel angry that I can't give her what she'll need most (IMO), but she'll survive as I did. There has been some damage as far as my oldest acting up-he has tourettes and requires a lot of supervision and redirection to keep him from hurting himself or others. So far only a fish has died though.

I'm just mad that the doc didn't tell me that failure was in the cards with what he told me he was going to do. He said it was permanent and irreversible and more effective than just clipping (cause I didn't feel that would be enough). So, I find out he just clipped. Then I find out that the failure rate is 1 in 500 for that (I don't know the rate for the cutting, cauterizing, and then clipping he said he was going to do). Then I have other doctors telling me that all three is never done, and I'm left trying to figure out why he would tell me was doing that then?

So, that's the whole sordid story. I will bow out.

Thanks for replying, and it's great to see you will be a regular around the forums!

When I was two weeks old, I had some surgery performed on me, and later my parents found out they had been charged double for a certain procedure, because the doctors had claimed they were for two separate occurances of that problem, but apparently, the health care only wanted to pay back one of those since they claimed you can't have that particular problem twice, and they were right.

(Problem is that I know how it's all called in Dutch but can't translate it properly to English since it's all medical terms).

OK, after a little searching:
It seems I had a double "hernia inguinalis"(?), combined with a "hernia umbilicalis". The doctors wrote a double for both on their bill, and you can't have a double "hernia umbilicalis", since you only have one bellybutton (I know I do, and since we're talking about me here).

So it seems like my gut was trying to escape through any opening it could find in the "peritoneum"(?). I must be lucky I'm still alive ...

Ouch, glad one doesn't remember too much from infanthood!

In my province our alberta health care, that we pay a hundred dollars a month for, covers tubals still. So I wasn't billed personally for either one. The province has to deal with the doctor billings. It also explains why it was like pulling teeth to get another tubal done. I'm costing the health care insurance lots of money. I was obviously still fertile, so I stuck in there and went to Calgary to find a doctor who would do another one. I had to have my first one done in my city, but I could get the second elsewhere since it failed.

Not a "new" poster as I joined the forum in April 2001.

Due to long erratic work hours, and only really being able to read the board late at night I seldom post. Because of the time shift, I find often that when I would like to say something, the Northern Hemisphere posters have got in first and there's nothing more boring than a whole lot of "I agree" posts.

About myself. Lawyer in practice in my own firm with my husband doing general civil law - we do all the old fashioned Dickensian stuff. Wills, estates, family, land ,trusts, small business, minor life crises etc. My practice is much of the above plus I specialise in the Medico-legal area.

Frankly most of what we do is in fact the application of sheer common sense to problems the participants are way too close to.

DBYou know, when I first came here I intended never to put anyone on ignore, but earlier this week I put Traveller on ignore, since the amount of screenspace taken up by his signature alone far (and I mean really, really far) outweighs anything he posts, and it isn't even interesting stuff at that.

I assume the only reason he hasn't been banned yet is because he hasn't broken any rules (yet).

Still, there is "The thread that will not die" to post nonsense in, so please don't junk up good discussion threads with it.

During the past year, I have occasionally been working on a Shadow headsculpt (based on his appearances in pulp magazine covers) for a custom action figure I eventually intend to make.

It might have saved me a lot of money to brush my teeth properly and floss when I was younger and perhaps not eat as much junk food as I did.

My favorite fruit is watermelon.

I spend too much time at home.

My favorite film is Casablanca.

I truly enjoy listening to music, and try to avoid genre/style prejudice. Among my favorite artists are John Denver, Sarah Brightman, the Beatles, the Monkees, Nirvana, and Sarah McLachlan.

I never went to my high school prom but always wish I did.

Despite not believing in the paranormal or supernatural, I still enjoy science fiction and fantasy TV shows and films, as well as superhero comic books.

I believe things that go bump in the night should carry a flashlight at least.

Finally, this post took far too long to write.

Awsome, and welcome!

I didn't go to my prom, and I'm glad. I do wonder what I missed sometimes though. Then I'm glad I didn't go, then I wonder...

Would you eat raw chicken?

A few years ago I used to eat food from Kentucky Fried Chicken if that's any indication.

Seriously, I'm now a vegetarian (but not yet [again] a raw foodist) so I would say no. However, it would really depend on the circumstances and what I come to believe, or hopefully know is right in the future regarding what and how to eat and applying myself thusly. At the moment, however, the thought of eating raw chicken isn't honestly appetizing, especially if it were to look like this:

Ahem, I haven't checked if there are other Swedes here but I'm pretty sure there must be at least one...

So, after some initial fuzz regarding my identity, I am finally a member of this forum. Don't really know what I hope to get out of it, except some input on issues of interest.

Anyway, it's good to be here!

Hi G6 - and thanks!

Apparently my IP address was similar to someone who's been bothering the forum or the site - or something in that direction. But hopefully that's water under the bridge now - got a vibe of secterianism from the process but I guess you have to be careful nowadays...

Good to be here and thanks again!

Nothing wrong with a bit of raw meat Eos! Blue steak, raw beef, just lightly scorched on the outside.
Or if your taste is for unusual food, how about this -

New poster here of the forums, I've lurked a while but decided to post a little bit. I really enjoy the posts by some of you guys.

Deimos was the son of Ares/Mars, along with his brother Phobos, and represents dread while Phobos is Fright. Deimos and Phobos are the moons of Mars.

I'm a young lad of 19 in Canada, Victoria BC to be exact, and love it here.

Definitely an atheist and hate it when people are sucked into supernatural beliefs (at least the people I care about).

Used to believe in the occasional oddity like acupuncture, but usually only due to misinformation on my part.

I love movies, television, music, but my taste is very selective in that I can like a little from one genre that I normally despise and hate something everyone thinks is great.

Right. If you know what to make of them, all the mythologies (including the bible) make great fantasy literature.

Hello.

I'm another Newbie who's been lurking for a while. I found the Randi site while googling information about John Edward and Houdini. While down and vulnerable with back woes, I watched Crossing Over about 2 years ago. Then my son had a report due on Houdini, and since I like to get involved in his projects (so we can discuss the information) I checked out a Houdini book for myself, written by a magician. Mr. Randi was quoted. I don't recall the exact quote, but the one that comes to mind is his insistence Houdini had a key. I believe it implied Houdini had it hidden in his "special place."

After reading the arguments on Edward, I chuckled over the banter section. The reason I returned to the site, was the discussions reminded me of the conversations between my father and brother. They are two highly intelligent people I admire and miss since I've moved away. I chose "Cindy Windy" as my screen name because that's my Dad's nickname for me.

I am a Mommy of 2 sons (one at CAL, and the other my precious angel who helped me through the worst parts) a wife, and before the back injury, I was an educator. But though my body's weak and keeping me from employment, I'm trying to keep my mind sharp and love to read and hear the 2, 3 sometimes 4 sides to an argument. Lately, I lead a cloistered life and need some heroes and role models. On this Forum, I greatly admire a moderator with the initials h.b., as well as G.6's goodness.

I am a very new member - I just registered yesterday.

I am a very creative individual, so my user name is Tanja because...well, because my name is Tanja. I promise I am very creative anyway.

About a year ago I was browsing a bookshop and found a copy of Martin Gardner's Science, Good, Bad and Bogus. I enjoyed the book very much so I continued reading about skepticism, and came across this site. I have never been a member of any internet forum, so I thought I better become a member of this one, as there is (hopefully) no danger that in the middle of a discussion somebody will ask me for my star sign or ask me to rearrange my house according to Feng Shui or something like that.

I often worry about the widespread presence of woo-wooisms (I like the woo-woo word very much). Just recently a colleague of mine started an expensive course in astrology and my elderly aunt was prescribed acupunture by her GP. Some of my friends won't eat strawberries because they heard they have been crossed with tuna fish, and almost everybody I know thinks if something is herbal it is good for you and if it is a "chemical" it is bad for you. I find it refreshing to find there is a large group of people somewhere who think otherwise.

See you around,

Tanja

Tanja
16th November 2003, 10:00 AM
I knew somebody was going to ask....;)

...and it reminds me of the worst chat up line anyone ever tried on me.
It was something like: "What is your star sign? Because if it is Virgo, I would like to help you change it." (not really translatable into English, in my language "Virgo" and "virgin" are the same words).

I am new to the forum but I have been reading the commentary for about a year now. When I convinced my wife that a) I wanted to go to TAM2 and b) I wasn't going to blow the mortgage payment in Vegas, I figured I should introduce myself or suffer the fate of sitting quietly in a corner at the Meeting not talking to anyone.

I found the website originally by following up a note in a Penn and Teller book about supporting Randi and although I have no background in science, I learned skeptical thinking at the knee of my father. It was sometime just after his statement that "the Shah would never fall" that I determined that maybe I should start checking things out for myself, rather than just accepting what other people told me.

I think it would be best to describe myself as saying that I am an anarchistic skeptic (if that makes any sense). I'm not out to change anyone else's belief system, just don't ask me to change mine unless you can offer proof that yours is better.

Hope to see you at the Meeting. If you see me there, please come up and talk to me. I'll even buy the first round.

Wilkommen Tanja.

Many of our American members are quite cosmopolitan and love that we have members from other countries {sarcasm} I am not one of them - I hate you outsiders {/sarcasm}.

I've been to both the Netherlands and Croatia, though I only passed through Croatia on my way to Bosnia-Herzegovina. I did stay the night in Lybilyana (that is so spelled incorrectly, but I can't remember), but that's in Slovenia.

When I was in Holland I visited Zollendam and the Zuider Zee. We stayed in a house with a dutch family and I ate eels. I'm compressing a weeks worth of trip in to two sentences, but I have fond memories of both Yugolavia and the Netherlands.

Ever been to Texas?

Thank you (hvala, hvala) and everyone else for a warm welcome!

I am glad you enjoyed your stay in the former Yugoslavia - our countries must seem ridiculously small for American standards - you can drive through Slovenia and Croatia to get to Bosnia and Herzegovina in an hour or so if you go where the border is the narrowest!

I have never been to Texas. I lived in New York for two years as a toddler (my parents were also quite cosmopolitan), and last year I visited New York and San Francisco and enjoyed my stay very much.

I took the train from Llubilyana (sic again..) to Sarejevo. And at the time, 1984, I was there for the Olympics, it was just one country, but these days I could see what you mean.

Of course when I was in Europe, my parents and I drove to Lichtenstein and crossed the border from Switzerland to Lichtenstein to Austria to Switzerland to Austria to Lichenstein to Switzerland to Austria to Lichtenstein.. all in about 45 minutes.

I enjoyed my eels, but liked my Indonesian food better.

I think the correct (or at least, less incorrect) spelling is "Ljubljana". I had reason to practice such names a few years ago, as in the company where I did my vocational training, the HR employee in charge of dealing with apprentice matters was also from Yugoslavia (though I donīt know which part). Most of us tried in vain to pronounced her name, so she was mostly just called "Milo".

Of course, Liechtenstein is the example for European mini-states. The Duke of Liechtenstein rules the land as far as the eye can see from his castle - only that castle is located in a mountain valley...

Yes, Ljubljana... Loo-bil-yah-nah. I had a very nice dinner and night there on my way to the Olympics to see Steve and Phil Maher win Gold and Silver in Sarejevo.

And I'm fully aware that Wilkommen is auf Deutsch, not Dutch. I was too lazy to google the proper Dutch word. Side note... Pennsylvania "Dutch" are acually German.

But anyway, back to the main topic.. Vaduz is a beautiful city that I shall never forget. Have you stayed the night in Vaduz Chaos? I have. ;) :p

Greeting folks, the name's Why A Duck. I'm new in town and looking for some action. Oh sure, I could've lurked for a while and tried to get to know the place. But not me. I just barged on in, registered and started rearranging the furniture (Hildy St. Tomas is my decorating idol).

So, where's the lounge?

You are in the lounge at the moment. The action is in R&B (warning posters have been know to use live amunition) the politics fourm is slightly less deadly but you may wish to be careful. Other than that welcome to the forum.

Ah. That would explain the peanut shells on the floor. For a moment I though it might have been Hal's pet elephant, but that was before I saw the "No Pets" sign.

Religion and Politics huh? Sounds realtively safe for a leftist agnostic who has all the answers.

What brought you there? Were you visiting you money laundering scheme? :p

@Why a Duck:
Welcome! Help yourself with the drinks. The peanuts are 2$ a bag, however, payable to Girl6. No credit cards, please.

O, by the way, I didnīt get your name. Care to explain?

Welcome to the forum, Why A Duck! :D

Yes, I'm collecting the money for the peanuts. Although, if you notice, the peanut gallery is over to your left. They've been quite lively lately. ;)

Heh, no. My parents were big on travel and we took a week driving through the Black Forest area, and down into Switzerland, Austria and Lichtenstein for a day or two so we spent the night in Vaduz.

Some will know me from my board. Some will know me from other boards. Hal knows me through my offering of advice.

A brief introduction.
Name: Frankie

Pet hates:
Swearing. I see no reason for it in posts, other than the poster has nothing educational to say in the first instance.
Bickering. Take it to the PM or a specific forum and leave it there.
Ill manners. Unless you are a real pig, don't act like one.
Politics. I have no actual Political affiliation. Though I do use my vote wisely.
Fools. I do not suffer childish behaviour in adults lightly.
PM's. Are by invite only, unless I have broken a forum rule. In which case the moderators or admins can do so as per requirement.

Pet likes:
Politeness. Doesn't cost a penny, but is invaluable.
Compassion. Ditto above.
Classical music. Mozart especially.
Educational debates. I like those that can teach and be taught, without resorting to name calling and hair pulling. Leave that to the children please.

The rest you will learn about as time goes on.:p

Frankie.

Welcome to the forum Frankie. You might notice you get some odd glances at first due to your chosen user name being superficially similar to another poster who has earned a reputation. Just be true to yourself and people will adjust to you.

I would have hoped that people, specifically adults, were above such behaviour. I shall endeavour to make allowances for such just this once.

I have my own reputation. I have no need of another's who has some vague similarity to that of my name.

Thank you for the welcome and for the advice.

Hi JREF Forum

My name is David from Cornwall in England and I've just joined the forum. I have been a fan of Randi for a while and finally did something to track JREF down after I saw a number of TV programs airing the skeptics viewpoint with Randi's face peering from behind the beard.

I'm a musician - have a look at our website if you're really bored - www.best-served-chilled.com but I earn money by designing and selling conservatories here in Cornwall.

From what I've seen of the forum so far, this looks like it could be a wild ride! Thanks for the opportunity to introduce myself and you can see my first posting here:

http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31172

Look forward to the intercourse with you all, in the nicest possible way.:D

David

ps. I agree with others about the bad language - it's hard on the eyes tryng not to see the swearing......:(

Hi BSC ('cause that's what you're gonna get called - who's gonna bother typing out the rest?)
I voted for Geller to get stained (although I had to force myself not to pick on that bloody green duck).
You'll find quite a few Brits here - it's not totally Yanks. (erm, sorry folks)
We also have strong representation by Antipodean criminals. They can't help being what they are, so we take pity on them Especially after Saturday.
This is a great forum, in all seriousness. It's intelligent, witty, caring, the lot. Beware - once you get sucked in it may be hard to escape.......................
