I haven't been in a forum setting in quite awhile. The last one was actually a requirement for a Philosophy class I was taking. It turned out to be very interesting, so I figured I'd give this place a shot. See y'all around! :)

I gotta admit, this sure beats the hell out of going back to school!
I believe I am learning more here than any class I had.
But then again, I was bored with school.
To actually be involved in intelligent conversations , is stimulating.
In my cartoon life.... I am surrounded by so many unintelligent people!

Some posters tend to habitate one or two individual sub forums. There are some regulars in each sub forum, but people post wherever they care too.

I'm a bit different in that I'm expected to be omnipresent. :)

AudioFreak
27th March 2007, 02:35 PM
Well hello everyone. I'm AudioFreak (a.k.a. Russ). I live in AZ not too far away from my father, Tanstaafl, who is responsible for bringing me to the JREF.

I'm a musician and an audio engineer at heart and you can find my web page, myspace, and all that by just running a google search for "Tarktones". I'm 22, I've been playing guitar since I was 10 and from the moment I picked it up I knew there was nothing else for me. Of course it doesn't pay the bills so I take jobs that pay decently in customer service or collections. Working in call centers is not a life-goal, but it allows me to funnel energy into my band which actually has a lot of potential.

I grew up pretty non-religious although during high school I got very deep into Catholicism. As I neared my "confirmation" I began realizing that while I loved many of the people and messages that I was surrounding myself with, I was not getting any actual answers to the questions I was asking. I became aware that what I felt as the presence of God was merely me deluding myself into wishful thinking. I decided that in order to state what I DO believe, I needed to gain an understanding of what I didn't believe. I studied many religions and ultimately found myself discounting them all for the same reasons; though I found much beauty their messages and poetry, I hardly considered them rule books for modern living.

And thus, I am the skeptic I am today. I'm not sure my mom has ever really picked up on the fact that I don't ride the Jesus bandwagon anymore, but I feel no need to make a big deal of it. I bow my head at grace and that's that.

With that being said, if you've ever got any music or audio-related questions, feel free to PM me. I have numerous pro-audio certifications so if you've got questions, fire away.

Mr. Skinny
27th March 2007, 04:31 PM
Welcome, AudioFreak.

If your dad is Tanstaafl, then I think you've said a lot.

Is your sense of humor anything like his?

Do you get along with him?

Has he discussed his feelings regarding ovine farm animals?

Do you believe TANSTAAFL?

Thanks,

Skinny

P.S. These are in no way intended to be leading questions that could be used against your dad later. I just quite honestly wanted to know what you thought.

AudioFreak
27th March 2007, 04:43 PM
Hahaha. My dad and I get along quite well. Growing up I was much more at odds with him than I am now. Mostly my mother's influence as their personalities are drastically different. As I grew up, I leaned more from her over to my dad. He makes more sense on a lot of things (no offense to my mother at all).

Our sense of humor overlaps a lot, although I am much more into stupid college humor than he is. Sometimes he rolls his eyes at my dyed hair and piercing, but nothing too far out there. It's not like I'm a junkie.

As far as believing that TANSTAAFL, I dunno... I get free lunch from the Tan man himself every week or two.

I have a 23 year old son myself. Still lives with me. :)

Thanks for the extra info on yourself. Sounds like you have a great sense of humor (in other words: you got my joke).

I've always found your dad's sense of humor to be fairly dry, with just enough bite to sting ya when he wants to!

Anyhow, look around and enjoy!

Overthinker
28th March 2007, 01:48 AM
Found a reminder when I logged in today that I haven't posted anything yet, and the bot suggested this place. So here goes....

I have been a sceptic for a very long time indeed, rejecting religion at age eight when I was asked if I believed in God and thought about it and said "no." That stance has not changed, and later exposure to the works of Isaac Asimov and SF in general, plus Carl Sagan's Cosmos and later his Candle in the Dark deepened my respect for science and the scientific viewpoint. However rather than becoming a scientist I have become a historian, which uses similar goals and methods: arguments should be supported by data that can be analysed by others. However as historians do not have the ability to do experiments ("let's redo the Second Punic War!") and data is not nearly as quantifiable in general, I certainly do not claim history is a science as such. But I try to approach it as such, which generally means being very sceptical about such stuff as post-modernism and relative truths. And the latest trend of the month.

Been reading Richard Dawkins lately, and he's quite interesting. Not subtle, but generally good value. I used to debate religion in other forums a fair bit until I realised that there was no hope of finding a middle ground - concepts of proof are just too far removed from each other. So now I just stick to reading some of the major blogs and hoping the world does not descend into superstition (it's already at ignorance).

I currently live in Japan, which is both refreshingly free of serious fundy religion and yet full of wacko superstitions, such as the blood-type personality thing: my GF was most relieved to find out I wasn't O. Hm. TV progs are full of 'ghost photo' specials and psychics, though nothing quite like South Park's "The BDIT Universe" John Edwards thank...thank someone. Feng Shui is not uncommon, but nothing like in China, and probably not as much as California. However it is still home to more than a few wacko ideas and superstitions, and whenever I come across one in conversation I try and correct it.

Anyway, that's enough to be going on with, I think.... Hope to have many interesting conversations here....

Gidday all,

I thought I would finally get an account and start posting, I've been lurking here for about 18 months or so. I feel like I know a lot of you already. :)

About me - male, middle aged, married with one kid. Australian, my wife is American, and we met online. Been an atheist all my life, both my parents are atheists. Used to post a lot on alt.atheism and talk.origins (wonder if anyone here recognises me?). Was a member of the Australian Skeptics a while ago, but let my membership laspe several years ago when I moved interstate for work. Hmm, what else? My first degree is in science (genetics), my post-grad is in IT (software engineering). I work as a Test Manager, generally running a small group of testers to QA a product before it "goes live". Been a roleplayer all my life, run a lot of DnD and so on. Avid PC/online gamer, sci fi nut, fantasy reader, usual stuff. That's about it in a nutshell!

Pleasure to meet you all, finally. :)

Cheers,
TGHO

To paraphrase The Great Gonzo, "I shall attempt to introduce myself while junking this vintage automobile! Afterwards, I shall eat the crankcase...!"

My name is David O. Little, but everyone calls me The DoLittle. Not because I Do Little, I Do quite a bit, but it's a fairly boring story and I'll only tell it if anyone asks politely. I am a father of two teenage sons, one of whom is on his way to college next year, working on a 1st mortgage and 2nd marriage, started and sold two moderately successful businesses over the past 10 years, and am a lover of science, art, peanut butter, South Texas, miniature wargames, and early morning walks on the beach with a sunrise over the Gulf of Mexico.

I am currently a student at Houston Community College, finishing up my AAS in Digital Communication, and will be teaching classes here in the fall. I also run the various computer labs on our particular campus and when students who come in to use the labs, help them with their assignments if needed.

You have to use a lot of critical thinking when working on these projects, both in the graphic and programming areas. Both of my parents being engineers, ciritical thinking was something I was taught at a very young age. Being well into my 30s, I'm almost twice as old as the average student at this school. I find it amazing that almost none of these "kids" were taught critical thinking. Besides my parents, almost every teacher I had in school taught something that recquired us to think. The very basic "if/then" statement in programming is critical thinking at it's simplest: if "you do/don't do this" then "this will/won't happen".

Many a times I've been called over to a computer to help some poor student who is behind in their work, waving the instructions for their assignment around their head, complaining "This program/computer/operating system isn't working right because it's not doing what I want it to do!" So I just sit them down and go through the process until we find the solution, usually with a little ridicule ("I know exactly what the problem is. You did it wrong!"), but I try and impart a little wisdom so they know how to work through future roadblocks.

At any rate, I hold out hope that our future generations won't decide which old folks home I get institutionalized in.

Greetings one and all! I am glad to be back after a VERY long time away (My original membership goes back before TAM 1 in Ft Lauderdale) and can't wait to dive back into the JREF world. I live in West Palm Beach, Florida Approx. 40 minutes north of the man himself, and have had the great pleasure to steal 45 minutes of his busy life for a one on one talk years ago. I had not heard of James Randi since I was in high school and he was a guest on some talks shows back then. Then, awhile back, I was watching some of the Penn & Teller ******** videos a friend had loaned me, and Randi appeared in a few of the segments. It was good to see him and see that he was still fighting the bad guys. Glad to be here. Now I need to get back to the forum discussion on Uri Geller... the plot thickens...

Firstly, I would just like to set out my stall nice and early with a 'snapshot' of my personal beliefs:

I do not believe in any deity, supreme being/creator, higher purpose or organised religion.
I don't believe in ghosts, spirits or psychic mediums, but am interested in the effects of magnetic fields on the human brain.
I would like to think there is other intelligent life somewhere in the universe, but am skeptical about most UFO 'evidence', and HIGHLY skeptical about ALL purported alien abductions.

I had a post moved to an inactive thread along with a group of other posts. Some of the posts in the group were warned though mine was not, and it was a rather benign remark in direct relation to another persons post.

Any clue as to why my post was moved with the rest?

Hi all, I have been a skeptic of many things since my confirmation in the Lutheran Church (of which barely went through because my Creedo was highly critical of Biblical writings), and my reading of Carl Sagan. I've seen James Randi on Penn and Teller's show (I own 4 seasons), but never knew there was a lively forum on his website. I should warn you, however, that I see the creation of a new world order growing, in light of recent events, particularly 9/11. I look forward to getting attacked by everyone in the Conspiracy section.

I only smite those that really, really tick me off. So, sorry, no contract smitings.

You really don't need to pray to me. When people do pray to me, it often comes across as a bunch of indistinct mumbling sounds. I've found PM's or a new thread on the forum works best.

As to whether or not the prayer will be answered, all I can say is, it depends...

Definitely none of that door-to-door crap. Those are the kind of people I do smite.

Skinnematics is generally laid-back. The most you might be encouraged to do is pop into a thread where Dragonrock is spouting Tacoism and say that you think Skinnematics is better. If you don't feel like doing even that, it's cool with me though. ;)

Hi everybody.

English is not my language so forgive all my errors, please.
I've been reading this site for years and I almost feel like I know some of you people. Lots of intelligence here. And humour! Both intensional and (the other kind). I laugh out loud everytime i visit. Honest.

And laugh one must: These last months I've been reading the writings of the 'Truthers' with increasing wonder. Their intense wish for a (different) conspiracy combined with disregard of fact is really, really strange.
I visited Ground Zero in 2003. It was my first (and so far my only) trip to the US, and I remember standing outside that fence, just being amazed by the size of the place. To think that a government would do such a thing to its own people (and HOPE to get away with it) is just ... silly.
(Not that silliness seem to be unheard of in the US. My trip contiuned to California and Las Vegas. Need I say more? ;)
What else? I haven't had much time to read the religious debates lately, but they are usually entertaining. I enjoy watching those religious nuts going down in flames. I probably should say that R. Dawkins is among my heroes...

I've been able to keep silent all these years, and I'll try to continue to keep my mouth shut when I've got nothing sensible to add. According to some of my friends that is most of the time.
So I'll just go back to my corner now... carry on, please!

I'm so glad that the JREF exists. What a great resource to have in our skeptics tool box when encountering the woo-woo. I have repeatedly encountered woo-believers and shut them down quite effectively by encouraging them to demonstrate their ability for the prize.

Hi all,

I'm James from the South coast of England. Good to be in the company of clear thinkers for a change. My interest in HiFi often leaves me struggling to breath for all the woo woo I am surrounded with.
Cheers,

Hey, welcome in, Pommy bloke!

Having the musical talent and appreciation of a block of wood, the extent of my involvement in hi-fi had been the playing of really loud heavy metal, but I've been shown some sites and info recently which showed what an amazing hot-bed of BS the industry is.

Take one of these with you:

Hey there! I stumbled on this forum researching some arguments for (yet another) religion vs. science debate... I quickly learned not to drink coffee near the keyboard while reading it!

As it happens, I've come to admire James Randi quite a bit recently, so I thought I'd sign up add my voice.

I'm looking forward to some interesting, informed and irreverant discussion over the coming weeks. :)

Welcome transferosome.

It's been a while since I've welcomed anyone but you seem to fit right in.

My only advice is to not get stuck in any one area. Look around, and see that this forum is a community. Some folks stick to politics, others to humor, and even some to religion.

Walk around and say hello. You might even find some friends.

Thanks dear Mr. Skinny.
You are welcome.

It might be a good idea to tell everyone a bit more about yourself as you begin to feel more comfortable here.

People here are generally rather friendly provided you "test the water" before you decide to "dive in".

However, posting strong opinions without evidence will result in an unpleasant experience.

If you have questions, the Moderators here are pretty helpful.

Good luck and have fun.

I'm a sceptic from South Africa (where we spell it with a "C"). I come from a Christian background, but I am now an atheist.

I'm currently trying very hard to write my first book: a beginner's guide to critical thinking for the average South African. So I'm looking forward to having some stimulating conversations with you guys on the subject!

Are you now or have you ever been at any time a nun?

What are your feelings toward goats?

What are your feelings toward budgies?

Are you offended by chocolate macaroon cookies (biscuits if you're british) that resemble a part of male anatomy?

Have you ever had a psychic experience?

Have you ever had a psychotic experience?

Are you experienced?

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

What is your quest?

What is your favorite color?

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Why isn't the word "phonetics" spelled the way it sounds?

Please answer these and after review we will let you where you will be placed.

And please, ignore the goats in the hall and do not touch the fuzzy things in the corner.

Just ok??!! You have got to be kidding!!!

Just a few quick things, momzahippie:

1.) Not only should you change your neutral stance on goats, I recommend you erase the word "goat" from your vocabulary.
2.) Any mention of the word "nuts" is subject to all kinds of misinterpretation. Keep in mind, this is both a nut house, and a place full of pervs.
3.) Regardless of what grayman implies, all us skepchicks are peaceful, docile women, who only want to spread love and joy wherever we go.

haha :) No unfortunately not. Long Island is near Manhattan NY. I'm about an hour and a half from the city. Actually I don't know why they did not call it Fish Island or something like that. It's shaped just like a fish LOL.

Thanks for the welcome!

Hello to all of you. I am here for one reason, to have intelligent conversations with others that think more than they breathe. I am compassionate, easy to get along with, have an amazing imagination, do not accept any current religious doctrine as the final word on spirituality, and am always working toward a better more positive me.

I would advise staying out of the Politics and Conspiracy Theory threads.

Welcome greg! I was at the conference as well, and am very glad to see others are making their way here. I suspect most humanists are skeptics, and vice versa.

Hello all, and greetings from a smallish island in the middle of the Pacific ... I'm a longtime Randi fan and a former lurker on the boards here. I've just regained reliable internet access after a yearlong hiatus, and decided to finally get registered. I just moved to a new place with a much higher concentration of new-agey woo than I'm used to being around, so I'm hoping communication with skeptics will help me preserve my critical thinking skills, if not necessarily my sanity.

Given your name, I don't expect a response. In fact, since this may be your last post, let me use this opportunity to say it's been nice knowing you.

Dang it.

By showing that I failed to predict the future correctly (while making a joke, no less), you have made the forum god look less than perfect.

Hello, Long time lurker first time poster.
(I think, I mean I cant really remember If I'd joined once before under another name cant remember login details or even a username but I digress)
Been a fan of Randi since I was 7 or so, first as a magician then as a sceptic. I think James has done a great job raising awareness for the sceptical cause during his long tenure. Just wanted to say hello, and I hope theres still enough "woo" to go around.

Like Bob, I have been lurking here for quite awhile. (When I started lurking somebody was posting about demons in their basement, and that they could photograph them.)

I first heard of JREF and the million dollar prize in some sort of "fact or fiction" debate between James Randi and Art Bell in some teen magazine about ten years ago. (It was also the first time I heard of Art Bell.) If I remember correctly Randi was actually well represented in the article.

-Raised liberal Methodist, where you didn't necessarily have to believe, but had to keep trying. Too much work.
-Tried Unitarianism, where you could believe in anything you wanted. But that took time out of the weekend.
-Dabbled with Zen, where you mostly spent time sitting and doing nothing. Too much of a commitment.
-Ended up here.

I'll leave the professional end out of it (mostly journalism), because that's too much of a sordid tale. Can't wait to get involved in some civil discussions.

The nick actually came from a friend who was working diligently on a task while I stared blankly at the sea behind him. Someday, perhaps ... indeed.

What is it with Americans and hardly knowing about driving a stick anyway? Around here, people just about always learn stick first, and they most definitely only drive stick when taking formal driving lessons.

Tanstaafl
9th May 2007, 03:40 PM
Well, he pretty much was just learning to drive. He had a little experience with an automatic, but this was before he had his license, as I recall.

And yes, it was done off-road.

Sheesh, you'd think Norweigians invented the stick shift...

Hawk one
9th May 2007, 04:41 PM
I'd say a smart-ass remark about doing it off-road if it wasn't for the fact that for the last 15 years, our gov's let all but the most used roads detoriate until the point where the asphalt's smoldering up and it gradually becomes indistinguishable from off-road.

I hate our roads.

Grasshopper
9th May 2007, 05:04 PM
One of my first experiences with a stick shift was on one of my dad's tractors. He didn't tell me not to ride the clutch. After the $800 repair bill later, believe me, I knew not to ride it.

Thanks for the offer, hcmom, but I'll just venture forth at time allows. Most of my forum time before this has been on a college hockey board. Civil? Maybe on rare occasions, off-season.

Hi all, I'm a newbie/lurker who hasn't stopped by the forum in awhile. (Feel free to go into mom mode and scold me.) I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get Carl Sagan's Demon-Haunted World on CD. It's only on cassette from what I've found, and I want to listen to it in the car.

Anyway, I'm really glad this site exists. Maybe I can get ideas on how to politely tell my friend that magnetic bracelets don't cure anything. Btw, Grayman, that's one creepy avatar. :)

Hey all... I've been lurking about for awhile now.. I used to be religious and a big ufo/anything else "mysterious" buff... and in the last few years have awoken to the idea of not accepting every little thing that comes along... I remember thinking: "Wow, I've never had anything paranormal happen to me. I want that to happen." Eventually it dawned on me that in order for something paranormal to happen to me it would have to happen at all and not just in someone's imagination... I'm all about this forum.
