Hiya all, signed up for an account on the forums to read something, but have never really gotten around to posting.

I have the misfortune of being trapped in rural Minnesota and forcibly dragged to an ass-backwards Fundamentalist Christian church, and saddled with a mother who believes in alternative medicine on top of being a Creationist.

Considering my divorced dad dabbled for a time in pendulum dowsing, I'm surprised I'm as skeptical, sane, and rational as I am. The sole light of reason in this household now that the younger of my little sisters has moved out.

Elbow Lake, MN. Several hours from the Twin Cities, I'm afraid. As
well as being a 30 minute drive to any city with anything aside from a gas station in it.

We've got some really great folks in M-SP, so if there's ever a meeting do try and make it up there to meet them. I've met Brown at TAM 1-3 and he's a lot less slimy in person than you'd expect a lawyer to be. :)

Greetings. Name's Malcol Campbell. I reside in Michigan and am studying technical theatre at Western Michigan University. I'd been aware of Randi's work for quite some time (my father told stories of Randi's appearances on the Tonight Show) and have been reading Swift for about 6 months now. Dear Folks,

I was invited to this forum and want to say hello to all. I have recently written a series of articles on my blog confronting 9/11 conspiracy theories. By Googling my name along with controlled demolitions, it should bring you to my columns. My articles have been met with viceral anger coming from 'Truthers', but I do believe in emails to them, I have stood my ground.

I do not only write of this one particular issue, but many others. I have been writing now for seven years as a non-paid writer. I have commented on everything from a to z. While I am a Democrat, I do not write the party line. I believe that writers have to be objective.

Best,

Hello everyone. I finally decided to join after some seven years of lurking (must be a record).

I discovered this site way back when I was looking up information on the famous von Kempelen chess automaton ('The Turk'), now of course, known to be a fraud and deception. Since then, I've been interested in ways in which people can be deceived. I'm also an occasional magician.

Like everyone else, I'm becoming increasingly infuriated by the likes of Sylvia Brown, John Edward, Colin Fry, etc. and the media attention they enjoy, particularly now that I know their methods.
I've always enjoyed seeing Randi in his many TV appearances. There are times when it seems as if he is the only man standing up to these fakers. The skeptical viewpoint definitely needs more support, particularly from the media. The need for reason and rationality is more important today than ever.

The Founder
29th May 2007, 10:50 AM
Hello everybody, my alias is The Founder, but I settle for Founder, Fo, and occasionally "F".

I am what you might call a "believer", though, not a practitioner, nor an endorcer of any mainstream religious, spiritual or generically philosophocal beliefs of the paranormal community. I have been actively involved in that community for several years now, to the point of being a full staff member on several popular websites such as Astral Society (dotcom), and running my own website of similar content.

I was invited here by an exuberant fellow called Uncle Feedle (seen above) who, after a debate that grinded down because, perhaps, we could have used some outside opinions, thought my particular belief systems would be better taken here for a more accurate and informed discussion, and perhaps would be cause for an enlightening debate at this forum.

My beliefs on psychic ability are quite complicated, which I will get into on a more appropriate board, but sufficed to say they are science and critical thinking based. I believe in what I can see, test, and experience. I don't accept cop-outs, evasions or excuses, but I do accept that there is a limit to everything.

One of the most important things in my philosophy is that we must understand what is real, and we must all practice critical thinking. Though it very likely seems contradictory for me to essentially claim to be both a skeptic and a believer -and no doubt less than original-, the most I can say in reassurance is that I am prepared to believe what psychics can do, not what they say.

I don't care about preconceptions, but I do care to overcome them, thus it will be my first goal in any debate to strip those all away, using whatever force is neccesary. I am a firm, blunt and adversarial sparring partner, but a reliable and rewarding one. If you have the patience to stick with it, I WILL get to the truth in any matter.

Patience is lacking these days, unfortunately, in these times so jaded and with so much hostility in the world that is forever seeking release, most debates I witness barely get five paces before people start throwing insults. I promise you I will not be the first to do that, but if I have to defend myself, I will do it very well.

My goal is to find the truth. I will not tolerate evasive, unfalsifiable, preconcieved notions or any level of pretentiousness. And as much as you may be surprised by this, I am speaking so both skeptics and believers when I say that. In my experience it is always a lot easier for the "rational" participant to get away with irrational behavior, than it is for the one with the strange beliefs.

I think that's about as much rambling as I should do for now, and I am sorry if I seemed *too* tightly wound, I simply want to make it as absolutely clear as possible that I am a scientist, not a tree-hugging, tea leaf-reading, evangalistic new-age hippie who believes things must be believed before they can be seen, etc. So don't judge me as so.

I have many theories I'd like to share with you, including proposals on how to improve the MDC, and in depth explanations of why the challenge is not succeeding so far, thus how we can counteract that situation. I would also like to briefly explain, perhaps mysteriously, that I do *not* believe in the "paranormal", I believe in the psychic.

If you want to understand what I mean by that, please read my future posts that will explain all as clearly as I can.

My next post will be a discussion formulated around clearing up preconceptions, as well as providing a list of things that do and do not apply to the genuine psychic. I'm not sure how I will structure it, but the general purpose will be to mediate between the (admittedly, very "out there") psychic world, and that of the skeptics.

In closing I would just like to remind everyone of something, and bear in mind I say this with neither insinuation nor inuendo. Remember, that being a skeptic does not mean being a "non-believer", a skeptic is not someone who refutes a belief out of hand, a skeptic is someone who challenges beliefs fairly in order to reach a logical conclusion. And that means also challenging your own.

Take care all.

Hi everybody,
I'm not really new here... been lurking for quite a while, then signed up last December but didn't post because... well because there's just so much going on here and because I spend too much time here already just reading different threads. Then I remember I have work to do and leave with a bad conscience :)
Also I have the kind of personality when I join a forum and decide to post I tend to do it full time and give my opinion on every imaginable subject I know I'm not qualified to comment on... and that's the main reason I hesitate to start posting: there are so many incredibly smart, educated and, most of all, patient (honestly, I don't know how you manage to calmly and rationally respond to all the creationist, psychic and CT nutcases again and again and again) people here I don't know if I have anything worthwhile to contribute... plus I read fast but type veeery sloooowly ;)
Well now for some personal stuff: I'm a hardcore atheist, materialist and determinist liberal (the European kind... what Americans would probably call "Libertarian"... but what do they know? ;)) working and teaching in graphic design and currently residing in the most atheist country on earth :D
And something interesting for regulars of the CT-forum: Prof. Zdeněk Bažant is my great-uncle, although I haven't seen him for years...
Well that's enough for now. Took me long enough to write and I'm off to read something crazy about Bigfoot, the Illuminati or Junkies blowing up WTC... take care and see you in some thread... or maybe not :)

(I'm sure there's an Aussie somewhere who will criticize a Yank for borrowing that, but it's become one of my favorite expressions for some reason.)

Words to the wise:

Mispell ( :spjimlad: ) words as often as possible, especially in titles of threads - it's a tradition 'round these parts and it'll get you a whole lot of new friends in a hurry.

If anything named Shemp, Marquis de Carabas, or Piscivore show up in your thread, tread lightly (and Colonel.... DON'T MENTION GOATS!!!). And if you haven't returned your library books or don't like budgies, expect a correctly worded but nevertheless stern admonishment from a certain Library Lady.

Ratchet up your post count, so you can get trading stamps and privileges. The Humor Board is a good place.... So's Forum Community.

Beware of Politics & Current Events and Conspiracy Theories. Asbestos underwear would be in order.

The eggheads are awesome! The Science and Really Smart Stuff board is one of the most informative, if sometimes over my head.

RSLancaster is a saint! (And that's pretty hard to achieve on a board filled with Atheists and Agnostics.)

Don't mess with the Skepchicks. (Except Lisa Simpson - blame her for everything.)

But most of all have fun exercising your little grey cells, as Hercule Poirot would've put it.

Mabuhay!

Howdy from the skeptical part of Texas!

Despite coming from an Irish family that is intuitive to the point of being considered psychic, I find most of the "paranormal" to be rather ridiculous.

However, my main interest is in combating medical and nutritional fraud and deception. I knew Mr. Randi's site would be of use when I quickly found rebukes to my "favorite" quack, "Dr. Mercola."

It's nice to log in somewhere that no one is likely to believe infomercials about John Wayne's woeful colon.

PS: call me "Pat"

Does skeptical part of Texas mean Austin?

There are a lot of Texans here already, so make yourself at home.

Hi Lens, the Welsh have not one ounce of originality ...

Sadly, this is true, I'll probably be posting quite a few jokes & such in the Humour Forum - none of which will be original to me, I specialise in mining humour from the web. :D

In the fields near Salisbury Cathedral, where sheep graze, there is a llama with the flock, which I am told will defend them against foxes. Anyway, it had to be moved into a field on its own for a whie recently because it tried to have its evil way with the sheep. All is now calm again, though.

Hey there Long John. I took a look at this forum, and those guys seem to me to be a bunch of [Rule 8]nkers. I considered posting there in support, but decided against it. Perhaps you could invite some of them over onto http://www.creationtalk.com/ where they could discuss the topic with some people who really know their stuff, but I suspect that we wouldn't get many takers. They seem to me to be the kind of idiots who don't know, don't care and would rather call you a troll and hurl insults. We don't really want that kind over at Creationtalk.

Nice to have a place to have fun as a skeptic, especially when it seems everybody misuses 'magnetism', 'chelation' and recently 'nanotechnology' on the net... Being a chemist, those are quite sensitive topics for me...

Like somebody said, I like to keep my mind open, but not so much that my brains fall out..:D

Best wishes from Italy.
I'm Henry62, I'm interested in 9/11 facts analysis and I have a personal blog about 9/11 attacks in Italian and English language.

I decided to come here because I saw some good level threads about CT.

I know in some posts there are also links to my blog (about themal cutting of steel and about WTC blueprints, for instance), so I thought I could give a little help in some threads... here I'm!

Ciao,
Henry62 :)

Welcome to the forum, KK. I'm just starting to learn about the safety end of nanotechnology. I was kinda shocked when I was asked if it was OK to pump acetylene into a tube furnace at a few hundred degrees F !! with Hydrogen as a byproduct !!!

Nano-tubes/Nano-pearls?? Respirable particles?? It's a rather unexplored Industrial Hygiene topic, though NIOSH has done a few studies.

Welcomes for Henry62 and Puck also.

hellow, I'm new too!

My story:
I went skeptical not so long ago. A year ago I was ignorant and I didn't care to whether something was true or false, because I thought it would not affect me. Actually I didn't think much! But after alot of argueing about stupid topics with my best friends I was getting more critical and started searching all the things I argued with people up on the internet (mainly using wikipedia). They think I'm weird because I look all these stupid things up, but I just want to prove it.
Then later on I found some movies about James Randi exposing Uri Geller en Peter Popoff, wich I found very amusing. Later on I found Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast, and searched more of Randi on youtube including his explanation of homeopathy wich shocked me, because it is the first encounter I had with homeopathy. My mom believed in homeopathy, and my dad didn't know what it was. I then searched more and found JREF and 4 other skeptical podcasts.

My mom and my dad now know homeopathy is wrong. (as do my friends, but they still just don't care)
It's amazing how much you can learn each day!

Wonderful story. It's funny how much people don't care after they learn though. Does your mom still use homeopathy?

Most of the people I see every day learn all sorts of things too, but still can't believe that I don't eat up their version "proof". Apparently I just ignore proof of gods and such. I'm still considered the deluded one.

Why is it that our version of proof, which is verifiable and observable, is still trumped by the imaginary? Why are we considered the "close minded" and negative ones? Why are we the minority?

I know I can read Shermer's books on why some people can believe "weird" things, but I still am flabbergasted every day. It's okay to kick the nonbeliever, but I don't dare try the same intolerance.

Yeah, I'm missing my skeptical friends, and am glad there's a get together in my area soon. Thanks to these boards, I can feel normal once in a while.

Exactly!
No, my mom doesn't use homeopathy,
I'm not sure if she ever will again, but I know that somewhere in my house there are some waterpills...
It's scary knowing that my parents aren't as critical thinkers as I always pictured they were. I just hope they don't go waste money on other stupid things similar to homeopathy. :o

Newbie reporting in

As the term sceptic is often confused with cynic, I sometimes describe myself as a 'veretic' - a play on the words verify and heretic

I'm a collapsed catholic (small c) turned atheist - at the age of about 13 (mumble years ago)

I've visited this site a few times over the last 3 or maybe 4 years - the first time was after googling dowsing - which is something I have experimented with. The 'results' came as quite a shock to me - until I read about the 'ideomotor effect'

I'd like to devise another experiment where the ideomotor effect could be eliminated - yet still using a 'living, breathing human' as the woo-stick holder

Any tips most welcome

Cheers

Hello all!

I'm Octavo from sunny :SOUTHAFRICA: (South Africa) and I've been lurking in the religion and philosophy forum for a few weeks now and finally decided it was time to register.

I'm an atheist and I came to that position through my teenage years by careful study of the bible and the theory of evolution (thanks to my older brother who was studying zoology at the time). In the time since then I have continued to study religion and evolution; needless to say, I have yet to find any convincing reasons to believe in a god of any sort (let alone the Judeo-Christian god).

I'm not as well read or formally educated as 1/3 of the posters on here, but I'm hoping I may have things to contribute here and there.

On another note, I'd like to mention that this is one of the most civil and level-headed forums I've had the good fortune to encounter! I hope I can live up to that standard as I can sometimes post without properly engaging my brain... thank His Noodliness for the edit button!

Hi, I saw the link to this forum on one of David Farrant/Catherine Fearnley's sites and thought it sounded interesting; also it has a very large membership. I am very fond of debate, and from what I have seen so far there seems to be a lot of that going on. Also, as most of the posts I have read so far ( only joined today) suggest my own supernaturalist positions would be in the minority, there seems to be plenty of potential for exchanges of views. I have to admit that another factor was the discussions regarding Sean Manchester. I joined one of his boards last year, and ( before I was banned for daring to disagree with him ) I had many exchanges with him. These exchanges convinced me that he was a charlatan at best ( something that will come as no surprise to members of this forum). I then joined several of David Farrant's sites. Though I have never met him or Catherine, I have spoken to David on the telephone on one occasion. I found him very friendly and genuine, and not at all the raving "devil worshipper " that Sean would have him. I have been quite ill since Christmas and consequently have not, I think, posted on any boards in all that time. I am beginning to recover and hope to get involved again. I well remember when I joined Catherine and David's sites that Sean accused me of being a virtual agent provocateur. He sent me a couple of spiteful e-mails and threatened to sue me; I am not sure what for. Anyway, I hope to take an active part on here. As I am still recovering I may not be able to answer posts quickly, but I will get there in the end. Thanks, Verum.

Hi Octavo, I too have just joined this forum. I'm puzzled as to how you could become an atheist through studying the Bible and evolution. The Bible may not convince you that there is a God ( plainly it wasn't meant to) but how can it demonstrate that there isn't? As for evolution, if it is true in it's current version, it would certainly make Christianity unlikely, but I don't see how it would disprove each and every concept of a God. And do you really believe that the current evolutionary hypothesis has the status of a dogma....proven absolutely to be true?? And why "needlesss to say"? Is it really that obvious that what the vast majority of the human race believe and has believed is untrue?

Hello everyone on this forum

After a long lurking time I finally got myself registered so I can chime in from time to time.
Short introduction: I'm from The Netherlands, 54 years of age, married, 3 kids, 2 grandchildren. I have been an electronics engineer in our Navy for the past 35 years, a career that has been most enjoyable, but will soon come to an end.
Once I had stumbled upon this forum (I believe it was a Wikipedia link to the MDC) I couldn't keep myself from returning, and became a regular reader of SWIFT and tried to follow a few of the sometimes rather heated discussions on the forums.
So, now I might actually take part in some of those! I may occasionally even say something useful (but don't count on it :D)

Best thing to do is ignore it! New trendy way of linking to news and information.

I get the impression that people "digg" something, dig it? Once it's been "digged" (they couldn't possibly have used "dugg"), other people can come along and digg it [have a look at it] as well, if you dig my drift.

No doubt there are people out there digging great holes for themselves.

I am 23 years old, from Israel.
I first heard of JREF after the Uri Geller show aired last year (I think). I never watched the show (I chose not to own a television) but the name James Randi came up more than once during conversations about the show, especially since he was cought "cheating" on TV (that thumb magnet thing)

Discussion is a matter of exchanging information, learning, testing ideas.

Debate is about "winning" the argument. Debate is not about learning the truth, while discussion at least can be.

Well, those are my definitions anyway, I didn't bother consulting Webster! ;)

Hello, skeptics and free thinkers. I've been a fan of Penn and Teller for years, and I've read many times of their admiration for Mr. Randi. I was reading up on "The Secret" over at the Skeptical Inquirer site and saw a link to randi.org, so I followed it. I'm glad I did, because I can see just from reading a few threads that this forum is one of those rare islands of intelligent discussion in the online sea of buffoonery and vitriol.

I'm a newspaper journalist who focuses on science, health and the environment. As such, I know a little about a lot and a lot about practically nothing. Still, it's a fun and interesting gig, and I certainly strive to learn everything I can before opening my big fat Word document. I can see that facts and evidence are valued here and even mandatory for presenting a successful argument. What a novel concept!

On a personal note, I was raised by an atheist father (hard-headed geologist from Cal Tech), and so I have always believed that our existence is the result of what we would consider natural phenomena, rather than supernatural. Although, if there is such a thing as the supernatural, then I guess that makes it natural, doesn't it? Whatever. My point is that I never "rejected" God or religion, because I can't recall a time in my life when I ever believed in God or a god. I did get duped into the Santa Claus thing, but that's another matter entirely.

Well I suppose that's enough pointless rambling for my first post, except to say that I'm glad to be here.

Hello all,

This is my first post to the forum.
I was compelled to make this post to get rid of that magical box at the top of the page that was encouraging me to post in this thread.

How does it know that I have not posted yet? Is it this Woo thing I have been reading about on the Forum? ;) j/k

Actually, Randi monitors the forum every single day, and if a new member has not posted, he instructs Linda to instruct Darat to instruct a moderator to type out and send to that member a highly personalized message requesting them to post.

Once you have made your first post, they are then able to track your every move on the internet.

It's true! :)

Please be aware that that there can never be enough pointless rambling in any post. Damn your parents are sickos, encouraging their kids to believe in Santa. It's child abuse I tell ya!

I'm new here, though I have been reading the main commentary articles for a few years. I am neither a believer nor a non-believer, since I feel that belief is somewhat irrelevant when one is looking for facts.

I am a middle aged male located in California, married with one child.

What else would you like to know?

Hi all,

I've been spending inordinate amounts of time over on badscience.net, amusing myself working out how grains of scientific truth grow into fields of nonsense. But I noticed a discussion here about Milgrom and his quantum homeopathy so I thought I'd join in.

Haha! What I love most about the Santa Claus phenomenon, especially as it relates to religion, is that each generation perpetrates this fraud on its children, eventually owns up to the truth, then the duped children go on to repeat the same exact scam. There certainly has to be an element of schadenfreude in the mix there.

Another thought: Imagine if, when you were nine or 10 years old, your parents came clean and said, "Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Jesus are all phony baloney." Would we be any more bitter about it?

Hi All,

I'm a new user, but I've been lurking here for ages! I first found JREF after watching John Edward on TV, and thinking, "This guy talks to dead people? When did we learn how to do that?". I searched around and found JREF, been hooked ever since. I even bought Ian Rowland's cold reading book.

I'm 43 and live in Massachusetts.

I probably won't post much, but I do read a lot. I find that by the time I've read a thread and decided how to contribute, someone else has already said it.

I'm what some would consider a "strong atheist". I don't believe in any gods or anything paranormal. I was raised non-religious, and I thank God for that! ;)

As a hobby, I restore pinball machines. My handle is the name of one of my favorite machines.

Hidey ho, all.

I'm Robert Lewis, but you can call me Bob Almighty. How to describe myself in just a few words...? Well, I've always been a writer, mostly horror fiction and political non-fiction (not that there's much difference between the two).

I was the Talent Director for Insidious Reflections, a dark fiction magazine, before it closed down. And don't even get me started on why it closed down--a lot of people were rather angry about it, myself included.

Now I'm working on a nonfiction book about the dangers of religion, and building a website called In Bob We Trust, which will feature as much information on as many topics as I can manage. The website will, if all goes according to plan, launch on July 4 of this year.

Personally, I'd love to think there are geunine paranormal phenomena. As interesting and amazing as life is now, the discovery of such would make it so much more so. But alas, we've never found any evidence for the paranormal, and I don't think we ever will.

See y'all around.

I thought I'd do the polite thing and quickly introduce myself before getting properly involved in the forums. So, hello to one and all, I hope I find you all in fine fettle.

I happened upon this forum by chance - I spotted a link to it on the Free Energy Tracker site. Scanning over the headings and noting the interesting subject matter, I was encouraged to read through a handful of the threads and found the discourse so engaging I would have posted a few replies there and then if that were possible. Save to say I have been looking forward to receiving confirmation that my login had been activated - well done and thank you to the admins for dealing with the request so promptly, I intend to be utilising my new-found posting priveleges immediately.

Just for the record, I am in the UK, Manchester to be exact. So should any of my Northern British vocabulary be confusing or misleading, requests for alternative translations are welcome.

Greetings gentle people. I have lurked periodically and thought I would sign up to get more involved.

I have been fighting the good fight on another forum to combat stupidity, conspiracies, bad science, general silliness and, of course, the chupacabra (a tough critter for sure).

I particularly like how people professing bad theories and fallacious conclusions get quite effectively eviscerated here. Kind of like slowly lowering a live pig into a vat of hungry piranha. They still try to talk while missing most of their lower extremities.

Anyway, like I said, I have come here in the past to drink from the font of knowledge, get infected with the truth and then attempt to cough and sneeze on the rest of the world. Hopefully this strategy is working!

See you around.

Hi and just so you know, I joined up on the forum solely because I am a big fan of Hawk One.

Also, please note that I fully recognize that I spelled 'spaghetti' incorrectly in my screen name and look quite the dumbass for doing so. My apologies to true FSM fans everywhere and a hearty 'Arggggghhhhhhh matey,' to you.

I found my way here via xenu.net and by seeing the Amazing Randi on CNN. I come from a nice southern US family, most of whom believe in psychics, tarot, astrology, the Bible, ghosts, UFO's, Richard Gere's gerbil, and emails that begin, "If you send this out to ten thousand people in the next hour, something WONDERFUL will happen to you!"

Regrettably, none of them have yet to embrace the Flying Spag. (notice I won't even try to spell it now... ) Monster as the one true faith, but I continue my efforts at conversion.

About me:
I like long walks on the beach, sagan, vonnegut (so happy to see Kilgore Trout here!) Derren Brown, Paulette Cooper, John Scalzi-- who tapes bacon to a cat for fun, john stewart, Leo J. Ryan, Pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and Pastafarians everywhere.

Thanks for being a great forum to read when I'm supposed to be working. I've lurked for about a month now and I never fail to find something interesting going on around here.

Digg is like Slashdot only the stories aren't picked by editors but by a majority vote. Digg's articles come from a wide variety of sources including message board threads. Essentially, what that means if you guys think a topic should be worthy of other people to read you Digg (Read: Vote) on the story. The Digg counter on each of our accounts is a representation of how many people liked the topic and Dugg it.
PS. Hi.
