Hi Geni
The eclipse was a wonderful event spoilt only by the weather. During the critical period, the clouds closed in. It didn't stop the darkness though! We have a farm, so we stood at the top of our highest field and just looked around the whole horizon. The cows went quiet and our dog cowed at our feet. It was a breathtaking moment. My wife cried, but I just bravely bit my lip.

I voted for Geller to get stained (although I had to force myself not to pick on that bloody green duck).
You'll find quite a few Brits here - it's not totally Yanks. (erm, sorry folks)
We also have strong representation by Antipodean criminals. They can't help being what they are, so we take pity on them Especially after Saturday.
This is a great forum, in all seriousness. It's intelligent, witty, caring, the lot. Beware - once you get sucked in it may be hard to escape.......................
Hi Tim
You know we shouldn't keep bashing the yanks - they can't help themselves. Since we left them to fend for themselves in 1776, they sort of lost their way...;) As for the Antipodeans, how will they hold their heads up again. Imagine the ignominy of being beated by an English team!
You might want to place votes AGAINST the duck and the slapper because that may count as 2 more for Geller.
Cheers

Welcome to Keziah Mason! What part of California are you from? I currently reside in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Hi Frankie! So, Hal knows you? Would you care to enlighten us how that came about? ;)
Hi ludo! Reginald did you a good service introducing you to this forum!

Yep, I voted for the duck and Jordan not to be stained (Oh, the shame!).
What's wrong with Yank bashing? I mean, it's not as if they're real human beings, is it? (ducks to avoid low flying bricks)

Pet hates:
Swearing. I see no reason for it in posts, other than the poster has nothing educational to say in the first instance.
Bickering. Take it to the PM or a specific forum and leave it there.
Ill manners. Unless you are a real pig, don't act like one.
Politics. I have no actual Political affiliation. Though I do use my vote wisely.
Fools. I do not suffer childish behaviour in adults lightly.
PM's. Are by invite only, unless I have broken a forum rule. In which case the moderators or admins can do so as per requirement.
Pet likes:
Politeness. Doesn't cost a penny, but is invaluable.
Compassion. Ditto above.
Classical music. Mozart especially.
Educational debates. I like those that can teach and be taught, without resorting to name calling and hair pulling. Leave that to the children please....
I bet your the life and soul of every party.....
Your just gonna love me...

Hi bug_girl, and welcome.
Mr Randi is a very interesting bloke. Check out his books - they're a useful resource for anyone who questions unusual beliefs of a "psychic" nature.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. If you have any questions, just ask. No-one will slap you down for it.

Perhaps you could put a photo our yours at the JREF Poster Picture thread, a page or two down on this forum. We have many, many good looking women (which we call skepchicks) here, and you will have to face lots of tough competition. :D

When Randi came to speak at your college, did you notice anyone in the audience with a distinctive umbrella?
bug_girl
2nd December 2003, 07:23 PM
no, but mostly i was hoping that our nutball president wouldn't say something stupid. The man's a twit. He had a great idea to increase faculty diversity on campus by having a house where all the non-white faculty could live, so students could find them. He called it diversity house; we called it "diversity internment house."
Unfortunately, the scientists were really the only ones that got really excited about Randi's visit. There was a large PoMo group there, who have issues with the nature of reality.
so, since i'm a newbie and have no clue, are you going to tell me what the in joke about the umbrella is?:)

Hmm, already have a introduction by a friend over in R&P, but I figured it couldn't hurt to post here too :)
I'll go more general biographical details here I suppose... my name's Justine, I'm 18 and going to college (Christian) in Minnesota, but my hometown is in New York.
a/s/l, so much for general...
Anyhoo, I came over from the Rapture Ready boards at the recommendation of said friend, as he thought I might be better able to discuss doubts and questions I've been having for, oh, awhile now :) Currently I'm just categorizing myself as a theist.
That covers it well enough for now I'd say.

I hope that you will find good discussions regarding your questions and animated debates about your beliefs. Be prepared to defend your position, though. ;) This can be a hard group, but I feel that it is a compassionate one as well. I hope that you will like the community here.

You can't eat Belgian chocolate in Belgium this time of the year. It's soooooo cold, you are going to break your teeth.
On the other hand, there are fine southern European countries (e.g. Greece) which import Belgian chocolate and any other kind of chocolate, and where you can taste all of them at the right temperature.

Hullo
Been reading Randi's commentaries for years. I used to participate in the Skeptic friends forums but had repeated frustration with server problems. Just fell out of the habit after a while.
I'm a skeptic, atheist and beer enthusiast. By day I pretend I'm an IT manager, and my employers pretend to pay me for it. I also write, though nothing of interest yet. I'm working on a satire about a priest who loses his faith after having a near death hallucination concerning a Satan character representing reason and an angelic figure representing faith. I like to think my style is a cross between Christopher Moore, Terry Pratchet and Tom Robbins, but without all that talent mucking things up.
I have equal custody of a 7 year old son Connor from my first marriage and have since remarried. Due to some concessions I had to make to get equal custody I now live in Biloxi MS, where christians come in more flavors than Baskin Robbins ice cream. Fortunately I find if you wave your penis at them they stay off your doorstep.

Well, don't know how much I'll be posting, but figure that I'll give it a go.
Just another faceless government bureaucrat here, albeit one who just returned to Alabama after 4 years in the United Arab Emirates--talk about cultural shock . Of course like most males, I use the Internet only to find sites of noble and upright purpose ;) and sort of meandered over here from the Bad Astronomy site, and have spent most of my working days the past several weeks reading the archived commentaries and barely scratching the surface of the BB.
I realize I started to be a skeptic when I didn't buy the Nun's "One god in three aspects" line in Sunday school and confirmed it 20 years later when I was going to Sunday Mass in an interdenominational chapel at an Army post. They had Bibles in the pew and out of boredom (after 25 years I could do the Mass rituals in my sleep) I actually read much of it. That convinced me that if there was a God (I wander between Atheism and Deism, sometime hourly:D ) he would have absolutely NOTHING to do with any organized religion.
Currently subscribe to NCSE and SI, may add Skeptic Mag in 04.
To late for TAM2, but hey, htere's always '05.
As for my signature quote, besides the one posted (still learning the ins and outs of this place)--"I am willing to suspend my disbelief, but not hang it by the neck until dead"

Welcome to the forum, Hutch!
So, why were you in the UAE for 4 years? Were you serving in the military over there? Was it a "sooper sekrit mission"? :D
I find it vastly interesting that you fluctuate back and forth between atheism and deism. Do you think you will end up being one or the other at some point? What would cause you to decide between the two extreme points of view?
And, thank you for sharing your story with us! I look forward to seeing more of your posts. :)

Greetings :)
I've been a lurker for quite a bit, and decided to register a while back, and haven't made any worthwile posts, and just decided to pop in and post here.
I'm not as brilliant as Yahweh, not as sullen as Lord Kenneth (Although I could identify with his position), but I'm a skeptical hard teen atheist, currently having a status of bum, out of school due to a long streak of depression after a lethargic fall from grace.
I was lost in the mist for quite a while, so to speak, not really sure about what to believe, who was right (if any), and generally lethargic about why the majority of people in the world are amazingly stupid - but the world still manages to turn and humanity as a species still survives :p
Then, after sometime of web crawling, through some pretty bad and poisonous material, and after a week of feeling beaten, I stumbled into the JREF website (Whilst all the time, my father, who's also a skeptical hard atheist, had known about the website, but was out of contact with me due to medical reasons (58 with 3 tumours and still alive! By gar)), and I've been reading Randi's commentaries and lurking / reading these boards ever since from my computer in a little corner of Thailand.

Newp, I'm a bit mixed, Eurasian (Chinese / Australian / Russian / Swedish / Jew / Goat etc...), born in Thailand, and somehow ended up having 2 nationalities (Thai and Australian). Then moved to Hong Kong to study, did very well for the most, and then moved back here as I no longer had a valid visa to stay.
The broadband and the computer technology (I literally lived on top of a thriving computer center in Hong Kong) here in Thailand isn't as good as Hong Kong, so I've been spoiled in that regard :D

No ma'am, the UAE had bought some US Army Equipment and I was there as a "Logistics Specialist", which meant I passed on their gripes, helped find parts and support, explained how the US military bureaucrazy (sic intentional) works, and most importantly, was there to get my butt booted when things went wrong, since it could not be the UAE's fault. Came home when butt got too sore :bgrin:

Hmmmm....never thought much of it, my deism is not very deep. My philosphy goes--15 billion years ago God said "let there be Physics, about 5 billion years later god said "let there be evolution" and at some indefintive time in the future (between 3:30pm EST and 14 billion years from now) God will say, "ok, that's a wrap" In between God just lets things play out, and most certainly has nothing to do with a bunch of smelly folks on a rock around a minor sun in a nondescript arm of a distictly average galaxy.

Well, I suppose I should do this too. I’m not much for standing in front of the class to introduce myself though so I make no promises.
I’ve been reading Mr. Randi for years now. I’ve popped by the site here and there but never even considered bothering to join till now. It’s only been for the past two or so years that I’ve allowed my computer to become a toy. Prior to that it was all about work.
Anyway, I’m here finally. I’m a hermit and have no real life so I’ll likely be quite a pain. I’m an avid reader. I’ve recently taken the bold step of attempting to be a full-time writer, a move likely to only further my obvious insanity. Skeptic would be an understatement in describing me. I’m sometimes mouthy. I’m often opinionated. And yet, I’m always interested in what you have to say, even when you’re wrong. And from what I’ve read thus far, I’m glad to be here.
Oh…and for the record, though I am a toad, I am neither actually RoadToad nor related. Not all tadpoles are spawned together.

Hmmmm, my first sentence says my Deism isn't particualry well thought-out or deep, so therefore you have deeper convictions toward Deism than I. My last sentence says that "God" has nothing to do with how life plays out on Earth, but you apparently dissent with that. But you agree with the remainder of my statement.
Perhaps it is the malfunctioning of my three living brain cells, but I must admit to some confusion on your quote. Some additional data points would be appreciated, if you have the time.

My mother is pretty much pure Chinese, and my father is where the mixture comes from, intertwined in mostly forgotten family history. Adding to the effect of dual nationality / passports, and several experiences in childhood, I've grown a bit apathetic towards whatever my documented nationality may be, in the end, I don't really ascribe to either of them, and as a result, I've never understood the mentality of "national" pride, anthems, et al.
Anyhow - New Years to you all! (At this time of writing, Asia's already celebrated, Nyaa Nyaa Nyaa Nyaa Nyaaa!)

I've been lurking for a bit and finally decided to register. So let me introduce myself.
My name is Todd. I'm your average skeptic/athiest. I was raised in a super religious southern family. After enduring years of going to church 3-4 times a week and the whole "speaking in tongues" nonsense, I finally graduated high school and moved out on my own. I went to school at the University of Georgia where I studied mathematics. Basically, I'm looking forward to some great discussion with fellow skeptics. :)

Yes... I'm quite familiar with that whole "speaking in tongues" scenario. I used to be a Baptist and a member of the choir. Yes, I remember those days! Our choir would get up and sing and there would invariably be a lot of "struck with God" faintings and people speaking in tongues.
I was always flattered since I thought it was the awesome singing of the choir that would affect people like that! :D

I got in trouble once as a kid when I started laughing at the "faintings" during the service. Still remember the look on the other church member's faces. I guess I was a skeptic from a very early age. :)
I guess that's what attracted me to math. I've always enjoyed science and mathematics. Needless to say my conservative southern christian family wonders what happened to me.

I'm actually a bit jealous of myself, so I understand your position. It's great. Scary, but great. I actually write fiction. I read a ton of non-fiction, but when I write it's all emotional purging couched in metaphor. A good outlet and often fun.

8th January 2004, 12:03 PM
My name is James M. Vierling Jr. Rather obvious I know. I came across the link to the Randi page while checking out a skeptic site, valleyskeptic.com to be precise. Most of what I will be posting will have to do with psychotronic weaponry and/or the atrocities known as religions. I am one hundred percent against both. For those unfamiliar with the term psychotronic, it basically means electronic or electromagnetic forms of weapons that are used for mind control purposes. Also the entrainment, visual or auditory, devices. I have read this thread a little and notice a few of the people posting here work for the government. I won't be backing off of government involvement in the psychotronic attacks or the development of the weaponry. I will also be posting how the weaponry works and how to detect it and personally I don't give a rat's behind who that angers. There won't be any of the smilies or other stuff in my posts. Currently I am unemployed. I post from a library computer as I do not have internet availability at home and this is limited to one hour a day when the library is open. If it takes a couple of days to respond to a post it will be due to reading the post writing a reply at home then typing up and posting the day after when this approach is necessary. As for those that say check the conspiracy theory sites for the psychotronics, I have and most of the people there I want nothing to do with. Which explains why I had never heard of the weaponry before it was used on me. I take the topic of mind control, psychotronic or religious, very seriously. I do already have a variety of things typed up about the weaponry and religion, and I will probably start posting some of them tomorrow. Anyway, hello. Death to psychotronic weaponry. religion is fraud. James M. Vierling Jr.

Jeebus. Sounds like my mom all the way. She's always calling the cops on people using mind control on her, or for stalking her, or for harrassing her, etc etc.
She goes in just as much depth too. It's wild to listen to. Dates, names, instances, etc. I'm getting these horrendous flashacks. Ack.
My mom repeated phrases over and over about messages in the media directed at her. She also heard others stating things that were directed at her (I never heard the statements myself)
Hey, didja know that the lady who plays Lois Lane was drugged when she drank coffee in one scene. yah, and after she did the scene she was gangbanged. My mom went into some detail. No, she has never read the actress' book.
Oh, and if a lot of people are driving white cars...well they are playing the car game because her dad drives a white car. Look there's another one!
She had a diary that she kept all the "proof" in. I have some letters she drops off. I haven't read them. They are like 10 pages long. I keep them because her dad asked me to. He wants documentation of all her....ya know. In case the laws change and we can get her some help. I know it's never going to happen though.
I'm sure my mom would be very interested in psychotronics. I hope she never hears of it. My brothers will never hear the end of it....I bet she can come up with that whole page of stuff just like that in a matter of hours.
Sighs.
Man, check this out! Line up you rots! Explain yourselves, for shame!

Well I put out the first of what I will post about the psychotronic weaponry under the science group, and also the first about religion under the religion group. To the smart-ass with the beanie, the are several reasons why wearing tin foil on your head to combat the psychotronic attacks is not a very good idea, which may I add that I tried to explain to the people suggesting it. To the rest, have you ever even heard of something called entrainment? It has been around for a long time and has even been used by religions to further their brainwashing cults. To understand how the psychtronic weapons work you will need to know what an evoked potential. Ohh by the way, if you use the detection devices suggested with the proper modifications also suggested you could prove your mother right or wrong. Psychotronic weaponry is not a joke, it very much exists.

To the person posting the link to the mindcontrolforums page. Yes, that is me. I might add the I also tried to explain to the people with the perp survey that it was not a good idea. I posted to the science group before reading the posts after my original and it also explains that site and why I want it there. By the way, I am 38 years old and have never been religious. As for the government stuff, patriotism is nothing but religion with a flag instead of a supernatural entity or most use it in conjunction with one. Any comments about the "thought police", my standard reply is they can take a long walk off of a short pier. This will become apparent in further posts to other groups as this will likely be my last here. I only posted here due to the thread title.

To the person posting the link to the mindcontrolforums page. Yes, that is me. I might add that I also tried to explain to the people with the perp survey that it was not a good idea. OOps almost forgot the whole signature reads; Death to psychotronic weaponry, any and everyone that uses it, produces it, funds it or covers up for it. All religions are terroristic, brainwashing, mind control, fraudulent BS cults. But I shorten it to what appears at the bottom of these posts.

Psychotronic weaponry is not a joke, it very much exists.
It is a joke. It can never work. No human devised weapons can prevail against the Great Old Ones when they return from beyond the sky in order to eat our minds.

I had a baked potato explode in my oven.
It wasn't wrapped in foil.
Coincidence? I think not!
(Now, if I could only figure out if it was the work of potato-probing aliens or potato-control rays from the military-industrial-entertainment complex.)

Well, I joined this board in December and thought I'd introduce myself; however, alas, I can offer nothing so exotic as "psychotronic weaponry" as a topic about which I am enthused. I began reading skeptical literature in the early 80s, including Randi's oeuvre , and this info helped me permanently root out the indoctrination of my arch-conservative, Roman Catholic upbringing.
My educational background is a BA in religious studies with an emphasis on modern American religious movements. From there I earned a JD, but I am currently working outside of the legal field, for several reasons, not least because I dislike lawyers.:D
On the one hand, I greatly value Randi and JREF's role in debunking the scads of frauds and charlatans "out there," but on the other -- and tho I am a weak atheist and skeptic -- I take a softer view of religion and the role it plays in people's lives, and as cultural glue, than many other skeptics generally do.
Anyway, the level of discussion/debate here seems high without being pretentious, so I expect to stick around for a while.

Mona, wellcome to the board. Don't worry. You don't actually have to sign a blood oath to destroy all religions in order to post here. We even tolerate lawyers.
I find it interesting that you have a BA in religion studies. You should have some good stuff to add to some discussions here.

Thanks! The relgious studies thing was strongly driven by the role my hardcore Catholic upbringing had played in my life. I like RS as a discipline because it instills religious tolerance by showing how much religions have in common, meaning "syncretism." Religions borrow from each other, even as they preach having exclusive and new truth; learning how pagan religions informed Judaism and Xianity went a long way to demystifying Catholicism for me. Robbing it of any power to hold me.
But at the same time, I came to appreciate that religion is NOT just a plot by the priests and the powerful to subdue the masses. It is an impulse that arises naturally in every culture, and even in every human being. It bonds people and cultures, for good AND bad.

Hello, is this thing on? Well, here is my first attempt to say hello to all! My name is Stuart and I attended TAM II. If you were also there, you might remember me as the tallest guy there. At 6'-7" I feel safe in making that assumption. Some people there also said I looked a little like Penn. Penn is one of my heros, just under Randi, but still . . . I look like Penn? Was that supposed to be a compliment?!?
Anyway, I talked to a few forum members at the Tuscany bar one night and they talked me into joining so here I am. I have been reading posts and I must say you all seem to be a great group. I'm writing from Phoenix, Arizona and hope it won't be long before I feel comfortable enough to throw some friendly insults at Hal too! ;) Regardless, after I am allowed to download the avatar I like, I may get kicked off anyway.
On that note, I look forward to chatting with you all!

This seems like the safest place to jump into the forum for the first time - although a couple of months of lurking suggests to me that I'll probably regret that comment!
Although I'm a long-time fan and admirer of Randi and enjoyed being part of the old "Southern California Skeptics" back in the 80's and 90's, I'd fallen away from "organized skepticism" following a move to Northern California.
By sheer serendipity, I learned about TAMII, registered, showed up alone in Vegas with just a little trepidation - and had a delightful time with many of you friendly and fascinating people.
What a pleasure to be among my own kind once again!

Hi Folks!
I'm Daniel Loxton (the guy who does the Junior Skeptic section for Skeptic Magazine)... My wife and I were at TAM2, so we no doubt saw a lot of you... But, with the table to help out at, the other Skeptic Magazine folks to get to know better (I work remotely from Victoria, Canada), and the giddy excitement of being at an honest-ta-gosh skeptics' conference after reading about so many of them, I didn't get that much of a chance to make anyone's aquaintance. Sure was a hoot, though!
Anyway, I was curious enough about this "Forum" I kept hearing tell of that I thought I might browse about... And then, since I was reading what you folks put out in the world, it only seemed polite to say 'hi!'

Greetings fellow skeptics. I have been an admirer of James Randi and a skeptic for many years. I am an overeducated conservative curmudgeon by nature, but try to not let it go to my head. When the religious types ring my doorbell, I tell them I am a reformed druid (we're allowed to worship shrubs). That usually quiets 'em right up.
I have been lurking on the JREF forums for a while now (long enough at least to remember Bigfig, whatever happened to her?), and decided it was finally time to sign up, join in, and start posting inane comments so I too could soon have one of those snappy pictures under my name.

Howdy Ho,
I am new to the Forum. I joined the Forum after attending TAM 2. I had such a blast that I just had to join. Inadvertently, my best friend (bigshustu) and I have found ourselves in a race to the "50 posts finish line" where you get to attach an avitar to your name. I live for getting online and reading topics hoping for one that I wont sound like a complete moron replying to with the benefit of adding a tick mark to the post count. Shallow? Yes. Will I beat my buddy to the finish line? I think so.
I do enjoy the forum and am a huge admirer of James Randi. I reside in Phoenix, AZ. I am a devout Atheist/Humanist and major skeptic. I love cycling, hanging out with bigshustu, movies, golf, racquetball, my two kids, and just living each day one day at a time.
Feel free to email/PM if you have any cycling questions. This is one topic that I know a HUGE ammount of information. :)

Hi Timble
Not everyone here is from that side - there are quite a few of us from the UK and Europe. Some from the colonies as well, like Canada, Australia - the usual hooligans. Watch out for an Aussie called Zep, though.......................
Good choice of name, by the way.

Hi everyone, just introducing myself as instructed.
I've been a fanboy for a long time, and have been here a while but I finally decided to join in since I don't get enough punishment anymore.
Well, I'm sure you'll get sick of me soon enough as I'm going to spend a while spamming the boards now to achieve the coveted 50 post avatar ... take it easy!

Zeplette, you are very welcome here. You have been mentioned by your dad, but it's probably best to gloss over that. I would not have believed it myself you understand, but Zep said...........I'll leave it there, I think! ;)

Hi, I'm Will. I usually use the username Oleron on my forums from the Pratchett character 'Foul Ole'Ron' who makes regular guest appearances in the Discworld novels. Unless it's already taken, in which case I use some Godawful corruption such as 'oleron1971'.
This is my first post to this Forum but I have been making ever more regular trips to this site over the past year so I thought it was about time I inflicted my fractured prose on you all.
For approx 5 years I have progressed from a 'each to their own' kind of regular Joe to a fledgling Skeptic and eventually to my current position as someone who bursts a blood vessel at the mention of 'Crossing Over'!
Actually I'm not that bad really but I enjoy a good debate.
Thanks for taking the time to welcome new members like me and hope to meet again on one of the more meaty topics.

I'm not sure that we are engaged in a *fight*, per se. For me, it's more about bringing awareness of what critical thinking can bring to a person's life.

Yes, "Crossing Over" is a disgrace on so many levels that it is sometimes hard for me to express my disgust. But, I do try to be compassionate to the believers. Also, we cannot tell people things that they are not ready to hear.
In any case, I will look forward to seeing you debate on some issues here.

Been away...laid off suddenly, had to go VERY low rent (no internet connection) and finally clawed my way back up to my old income level. As for the the film, I had hoped the idea could grow legs at the first amazing meeting...sigh,sorry I missed both 1 and 2...well, here's to #3! What with the august body of talent on hand,we could possibly entice them to make some commentary on the scientific process, quackery, debunking, etc. but if anyone out there has any editing talents, those of us nearest to the pantheon of skeptics could put together enough bits and pieces to really make a nice little piece. 'Course we would need a hot Skepchic to be the host of the whole program...know anyone who might fit that description G6?;) Anyway, it is a neat idea overall, would be nice to tackle and who knows,it might even make it to a low rent, public access channel at 2 am some day! :D

Hello.
I know nothing.
Help.
In his Apologia, Socrates claimed that the Oracle at Delphi had told him he was the wisest of men. This confused Socrates since he knew nothing. So he visited all the wise men to find out what they knew and to prove the Oracle wrong. He finally determined that the Oracle was correct, for while he knew nothing, at least he knew that he knew nothing.
So you are already as wise as Socrates who was the wisest of all men. I'd say you're off to a good start.

My name is Sean. I really enjoy visiting this website and forums. I don't usually participate in many online discussions, but this forum is exceptionally cool
I am also looking for a new online hangout, as my old one has just revealed how little I have in common with them. It all started with a thread about that new religious movie. What's it called again??
I have to admit I was really tempted to tear into them, but decided to keep it civil (it is heavily moderated anyhow) and leave my opinion out to avoid trouble.
