Funny you should call yourself Galaxie. I had one when fuel was around ten cents a liter.
Smooth as a babies bottom they were, with a 5 liter V8 engine and a boot so big you sneek at least 4 of your friends into the drive in theater. :)

Nice. I'll have to remember that trick when I get mine back on the road.

(Assuming the nearby drive-in theater is still open. It may have closed. :()

I have no idea if any drive-ins still exist in your part of the world. Here they disappeared years ago, unfortunately.
I wonder how many people were actually concieved in the back seat of a Buick, or Ford
at the drive-ins? Ah, those were the days, when men were men and women were, well......women! Now days everyone has a pad of some kind. There's no naughtiness about sex anymore. I pine for the good old days. :p

Thanks for posting a link to that website, Roadtoad.

Using that site, I found the drive-in that I was looking for, but it's no longer listed in the area phonebook so I think it's closed. Bummer.

Oh well, at least I can say I saw a double feature there once. It was Big Mama's House followed by Me, Myself, and Irene.

I'm a long-time reader of SWIFT, but new to the forums. I've learned that I would be what's called a skeptic, but from my perspective I just ask, "how do you know?"

I don't have "faith" in science. I just have confidence that were I so inclined I could perform the same tests and get the same results. I also acknowledge that at any time a new test could come along and change our understanding dramatically. This is why I tell people that faith is easy - there are no tests to fail.

I do have a question, though. Is it appropriate and worthwhile to respond to an old thread? Some are truly fascinating, and I sometimes find myself wanting to ask a question.

Welcome UncaYimmy!
You could perhaps start a new thread referring to the old one, or there is indeed no reason you should not dig it up. If it's a long thread, though, It might take some getting through brefore we get to your bit.
As regards faith in science, I take your point. The only problem is there are complex areas of science where masny of us do not have the knowledge or resources to do the tests ourselves. There are times when we have to make a judgement when someone tells us 'x' is so. We take into account many things - his qualifications, whether others can replicate it, is he a bozo? That sort of thing.

I agree. By "do the test myself" I mean "if I didn't age and had unlimited financial resources and intellectual capacity" I could do it. :) I'm not used to introducing myself in this manner, so I wanted to establish up front that I'm not a woo-woo looking for a fight. Maybe I should have just said that, eh?

Hey, we have a potential thread necromancer, actually asking permission to raise a dead thread!

Years ago I was dialing up to bulletin boards on my Hayes 1200 baud modem. Later I was a sysop. I've moderated mailing lists. I've been in the newsgroups for about 15 years and been part of (and run) my own web based discussion boards.

They all have their own personality and culture. It can take a while to get the feel, so sometimes I take a shortcut and <gasp> actually ask. Not that I listen to the answer, mind you, but at least I asked.

When I was in Hungary visiting my in-laws, my wife's father fed me some fresh goat milk. He didn't bother to tell me that after a certain age the milk is really only good for cheese and not for drinking.

But I'm not going to let one bad goat experience color my attitude towards all goats.

Attaboy! That's the spirit. Not all goats are the same, just as not all humans are the same. Some goats are for patting, some are for the wood fired oven, yet others, are for milk production which in turn make fairly good goat milk fetta and goat milk gouda [ caprakass] cheese. Both very expensive.

Welcome to the madhouse. Enjoy your stay. :p

Hi all,

Been lurking for some time now and took a deep breath and decided to write a short introduction. I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (Holland). The deep breath is for "can I write a peace without spelling something wrong?!" I don't have a spellchecker (there are reasons for that) so I'm doing this from memory....should be fun.

Anyway, a brother of mine mailed mr. Randi about woo in this part of the world and was mentioned in Swift a couple of years ago. Lots of woo in the Netherlands too. Shame on us. We even have woo in politics. Woo is everywhere, aaarrgh! Our 2 euro coin states that mr. God is with us. I am not convinced that that is a good thing.
I used to think that woo (including religion) was kinda harmless but times have changed.

Nice to be here, fascinating stuff to read and maybe we "meet" in some topic.

greetings,
Emma

Hi guys. I am ashamed to say that I was a person who fell for some woo in the past. It is really sad since there was a time I considered myself somewhat of a critical thinker. Before 9/11 I never entertained any CTs that I can remember, but I was working with a retired marine who turned me to the Alex Jones show one day.:( Shortly after I ended up in quarantine at my local hospital due to pneumonia that for some odd reason the doctors did not quite know why I had it or how to treat it. Ofc, during that time the anthrax scare was going on and let me tell you, laying in a hospital bed with 104 fever and cloudy lungs is no fun when you have that stuff on the news 24 hours a day. So my sillyness got the better of me and I listened to Alex Jones for about a year. Common sense must have took over since I was back to normal and completely out of that phase.

Now to today, like an idiot I was bored a few months ago(I am now on disability) and decided to see what was new in the infowars. I take care of my 2 yr old son and would just have the show playing in the background. It took hold again and once the bailout crisis hit I started to flip out. I knew then that I had to start doing some retraining of the mind and after reading LC viewers guide 2nd edition, I stumbled here and it has been a huge breath of fresh air. I have spent hours going through some of the subjects that in the past I never had a good answer for. Things seem so much clearer now that I no longer listen to the money hungry scam artist Alex and instead apply real thinking to everything I find curious. Thanks to all the people here who do the research and put time in to help those of us who have lost their way. I hope to contribute to some of the discussions soon. And sorry for the very long intro. :D

Furthermore, you wouldn't perhaps be implicating any specific poster in particular as guilty of that certain vice? Or would you merely be making a general comment about the single word introduction that oz_au posted and contrasting it against the all-too-common tendency for various posters to, shall we say, waffle on a little, especially in the Welcome thread, and not making a specific light-hearted dig at those of us who are lexiphiles and take up any opportunity to use the words that we so adore?

I'm not a hardcore skeptic, but the gathering of knowledge and critical thinking are very important to me because I'm always trying to broaden my mental horizon.

Hey JREF posters,

I'm a poster on another forum where I have over 6,000 posts, one of the mods on that forum recommended this site to me as intelligent and interesting with high activity and many posters (not to get rid of me but as a friendly gesture within the context of our conversation). I have alot to say and am glad for the opportunity to say them here to new people.

I'll give you a little history so you may feel more comfortable with who you are talking to and we can clear away the probing just that much faster and get into the real issues.

I'm 38yrs old, I've owned and operated several businesses with varying success and failures which has rounded out my character to that of an idealist realist (though some may question this later and I will be happy to address when this occurs). I was raised by a liberal mother (art teacher) and a conservative father (major in the army) and drew on their strengths and tried to reduce their weaknesses to make me who I am today.

My most recent career path has been that of an auctioneer and manager of a very busy auction house in Sydney Australia where I also trade in reclaimed timber furniture, antiques, rustic and industrial 2nd hand furniture and other more interesting collectibles in the antique and design centre above said auction.

My desire is to write science fiction novels and I intend to platform some of my theories here, those which I wish to include in the books, and know we'll have fun ridiculing and defending these said theories in the crucible of critical examination. Luckily I have learned not to take offence at anything .

I look forward to seeing you within the folds of this recommended forum. talk to you soon.

Thank you for the welcome Sister Smile. :)

An interesting question, Sister Smile, which conversely has an interesting answer - at least I think so, let me explain.

I am a conceptually oriented person who has done very much diverse reading, experienced very much diverse social existences and watched many, many films. This caused a confusion in my data entry, too many books, too many associates and friends names as well as too many films caused this confusion when applied to referencing my sources of conceptual ideas. I found that my brain was having too much space taken up with to many references and so, essentially, I narrowed the field - I deleted my care factor of who and where and what beyond the actual entertainment value and the conceptual ideals I assimilated into my core knowledge base/mind. Hence I struggle to remember the authors or the names of specific films and books as I find this information too taxing, due to volume, to remember.

What happens due to this is I have to request what, specifically, happened in a film or book to determine if I had seen or read it, I have an excellent memory for concepts but a deleted reference file for authors, historical friends names and titles of books or films. This may seem strange but the idea behind this is to allow more space for what is in fact important to remember as far as I am concerned.

To answer directly, then, I can only suggest some authors to which I know I have read - e.g. Frank Herbert, Asimov, Heinlein etc. But these are not necessarily my favorites and are only remembered due to the fact there is another emotional trigger associted to them, like my brother being a sci fi fan and encouraging my reading of these specific authors, when young I was always trying to please my brother and desired his respect so avidly hung on every word to draw his attention - I'm long over that BTW.

Some mild references to actual sci fi books which I really liked, in terms of title, include "Enders Game", "Odd John" - fabulous book BTW - but mostly I remember 'why' particular sci fi books were conceptually important to me as it is these concepts which I have barstardised and reformed to, along with actual life observations into the actual nature of humanity, create a core conceptualised knowledge base.

My theories are essentially formulated by standing on the shoulders of giants, in all forms of conceptualised models - including psychology, philosophy and spirituality - to eventually percieve the world in my own conceptualised fashion rather than anothers taken as wrote. I am my own man who has built onto the shoulders of giants who themselves stood conceptually strong. I am content with this way of being though it can cause some mild disturbance in others.

Thank you Kopji,

Actually I wouldn't mind if this user name had been taken as then I would be offered the opportunity to change it - the reason I wouldn't mind is that now it seem's too pompous and assuming and is prone to be used as a derisive tool against me in the future - I didn't give the name enough thought before I assumed it, something I now regret just a little. :o

People don't buy goats, the kind your talking about anyway, they have nasty obnoxious habits, my advice is to take them round behind the shed and knock them on the head with a lump of 4x2 and pass off the flesh as lamb on the gullible capitalist market. Better yet raffle the meat at a local charity gathering.

As for cookies I haven't accepted any since a particularly strange evening at a Uni function. Strange night indeed. :boggled:

Hey, everyone! My name is Josh and I am from Cleveland, OH. I have been a full blown skeptic since early 2007 and it has been a wild ride. I have been educating myself on what skepticism is and what it isn't and I have been meaning to come on the JREF forum for a while.

Theories!
The goats are fond of them I'm told. ;)

Mentalist= Psychic= Fraudster= Deluded= conman/woman.
Magic= Tricks played in front of an audience.

totally wrong. Mentalism is magic which deals with the mind etc. Doesn't mean you are a fraud. There are mentalists who say upfront that what they do is only entertainment(Banachek from the famous ALpha project is one of them).
Since this is the Educational foundation i thought i educate you concerning mentalism.
Psychics and mentalists are a completely different area. Or could you elobarate why people like Richard Osterlind, Banachek etc are deluded conman? If that was so, James would have had a hard time targeting every performing mentalist on this earth. He would have a target every day of the week. I think i know why he doesn't do this. Simply because mentalists are not conman.(Derren Brown for example, which gives false pseudo explanations for his mentalism
effects or people like Max Maven, Doug Segal, Ian Rowland etc).

The difference between Magic and Mentalism? With magic you are mostly using stuff like a deck of cards, spongeballs etc. I noticed mentalism is all about a good solid presentation. You could perform mentalism naked(hence why 2 books on the subject are called "Naked mentalism 1,2" by Jon Thompson), there is really nothing to hide behind. I like mentalism more because i was always interested in the paranormal so the paranormal actually was a good lead-in.

Any questions? :D

haha thanks mate :P
sure, would you mind supplying me with a link? I really believe a mentalist is not the same as a psychic(well it isn't in fact, completely different definitions etc). Mentalists are for entertainment, people know just like with a magician its all for entertainment. Furthermore, mentalists never make claims, so there actually is nothing to disclaim. I agree with you on the fact that some mentalists DO claim supernatural powers(I surely don't). it's a thin ethical line i agree but to call every single mentalist a deluded conman is beyond me :)

Their are some very talented people out there who are very good at reading people, observing them, and they are capable of guessing more than the 30% a normal person could, simply by cold reading.
Sceptic Magazines Michael Shermer once disguised himself as a talk back radio psychic in some US state that I don't remember. With about an hour to prepare himself he answered listeners queries of the supernatural kind at the astounding rate of more than 80%. He received all his answers by questions he asked of the audience. :) That's cold calling. ;)

Might be true, im one of them(my profession is cold reader/mentalist). But again, i dont claim to have powers, i don't do it from a spiritual view of mind, i don't believe in the supernatural, i dont give grieving people false hope. Where exactly is the delusion in that(or the "conning people" if you will). People pay to see me perform, or they hire me. I state upfront that im a mentalist, not a psychic and that i dont claim to have abilities of any kind( a psychic however, claims supernatural abilities).

Anyway, thanks for your help ;)

I disagree with this completely. I've always used the term mentalist to refer to a sub-set of stage magicians whose tricks appear to be 'psychic' in nature. Derren Brown is a mentalist but I think it would be difficult to sustain an argument that he is a fraudster or a conman.

Hello, Rev. Crackpot here.

I'm interested in topics of a skeptical nature, mostly because I first was interested in all sorts of Woo. When I grew older, I found that the discovery part was more interesting.

I don't have trouble calling myself a cynic, since I don't think I should have to treat all mysteries with equal "skepticism," in that I don't think people should worry about being "fair" to claims of the supernatural. If the claim is supernatural, it is a claim "outside" of science, so it makes no sense to me to entertain the notion. I think it's interesting to find the real cause behind a mystery, because, who doesn't love a mystery? But well, how can someone test an unfalsifiable claim, eh?

I'm a bad reputation cynic. I say "bull-pucky" to a lot of stuff "out of hand." But it amuses me nonetheless.

I once had an interview with Alex Chiu, who promised me two eternal life rings (I never got wedding rings for my marriage). He never sent them.

Budgies are delicious cooked in a 'ragu' with spaghetti, but you need at least a dozen to get a decent meal out of them. :D

Hi everyone. I was a member of an MMA board for about 10 years and it has recently been overrun by CT's. I found this board while searching for some clarity on some of the disinformation that has been posted there and just wanted to say hi. This is a great forum.
It sure is. But do avoid Graymans cookies at all cost. He claims he uses oatmeal flour, but we have no proof that he actually does. By the way, if you see a goat hanging around looking as if it's lost. It actually belongs to Arthwollipot, and he's eager to get it back.
A warm welcome is in order.

What originally sent me here (besides the fact that Randis books rock) is that I had been a christian for 30 years. When God didn't asnwer my prayers in dire circumstances, I had two choices. Either he wasn't all powerful and couldn't help, making him not-God, or he was all powerful and didn't feel like helping when I was down. making him not loving.

I've got a little Epicurus, if anyone's interested?

Is god willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both willing and able? Then whence comes evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him god?

Hello,
I'm new here, but lurk in other skeptical spaces of the world. My name is Bryan Lee Peterson. I have blogs at mindofbryan.com, which is mostly about writing and my fiction, and instructionslistsandnotes.com, which is a literary/found blog of instructions, lists, and notes. I'd really appreciate submissions at that one. I just got it up, and it's feeling kind of lonely.

I write skeptically under the moniker Johnny No One at ihopeyourehappy.com. It focuses mainly on politics, pop culture and current events, but has the odd paranormal article. I'm working up a podcast of it right now.

Thanks,
Bryan (Johnny)

Speaking of which, did everyone see windturbinesyndrome.com?

Hello everyone,

3rd generation member of a VERY high-control religion here. (Some call it a cult, but that's a topic for another day.)

Began to awaken my critical thinking skills a little over 2 years ago.

Discovered this site through the Podcast, "Skeptics Guide to the Universe".

I'm slowly working on introducing my true-believer wife to the beauty of seeing the universe through the lens of rational thought. My kids are half-way there.

Pray for me.

Oops. Old habits.

Maybe a couple "Hail Randis" in my behalf? :D

Hi! I was introduced to the skeptical community my freshman year of college. The first two weeks of our mandatory evolution class focused on skeptical thinking. We watched Uri getting debunked and some video with JR, read about a variety of paranormal issues and then had to research and write an article about the topic of our choosing. I can no longer remember what I wrote about since it was so long ago. Needless to say, I have been attempting to apply the scientific method to just about everything I encounter.

Welcome to, in my humble opinion, the best forum on Earth for thinking people with an open mind. But not that open that your brains fall out.

Your interests make for fascinating reading as long as you treat them with a pinch of salt and a sceptical mind. Never accept anything without substantial evidence. As Carl Sagan once said. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Or something of that nature. :p

Good Day,

What a wonderful surprise I've found here in this web site. My Name is Ivan and I'm a Musician/Singer/Songwriter and Audio Engineer/Producer from "The States" as some may say. After a long and ugly 8 years of faith based Governance at the hands of very odd and perhaps even dangerous illiterate dolts, I'm hopeful that the rest of the world might begin to see it's way clear to find forgiveness in it's heart of hearts. We have much work to do here in order to get things rolling again.. While I'm as much of a skeptic as anyone, I am pleased to announce that it appears our new president can at least read and he seems like a well meaning fellow, and in fact, it looks like he might be unusually bright, as American politicians go. This is good news for us over here. It's been a strange ride indeed.

I came upon your wonderful site while doing battle with a person who kept swearing up and down that "They said the steel melted" regarding the Steel in the WTC Towers, {I was swearing both up and down myself, but I'll stay away from such language}.. I don't recall with any real specificity HOW I stumbled onto this site beyond that.

It occurs to me that some people are not well, and I in fact feel bad for them.. This site gives one hope that some of these folks could find a place to finally say "It's OK, It really happened"..

Not only that, but what an amazingly hilarious group of people you have gathered here! My goodness, it's quite a spot..

So I certainly look forward to reading along, and if I feel I have something to contribute, I may well do just that. There are some very very clever folks here, so I'll be soaking it all up..

Best to all..

Ivan.................

So many people I knew from churches believe almost any urban legend and even when I was one of them, I still thought, Theres got a be a logical explanation for this when something unusual happened.

There is always a logical explanation for everything. That's what a fair few theist fail to grasp. They have this magical thinking for things they find hard to comprehend, like the beginning of life or the very cosmos around them.
Because they fail to comprehend the enormity and complexity of the world around them, they think; this must be made by god.

But ask such people, if a god created all this complexity, doesn't it mean that this god needs to be even more complex. And then the question arises, who made this god? An even more complex god? OK! then who made that god?
You can't have gods all the way back. It's like a question that was asked of a theist. '' You believe the Earth is created and is in space. What is holding up the Earth?'' '' Why a turtle'' was the response. ''And what is holding up the turtle?'' Asked the questionnaire. ''Why, another turtle. It's turtles all the way down I'm afraid.''
This is a welcome thread. Sorry for the off topic and rambling on my part.

I've been lurking for a few weeks now and thought I'd finally join up, so here I am! I'm a full time vet tech. at an animal shelter and attend UMCP studying neurophys. and bioEngineering. Some things about me: I enjoy Aviation/Aeronautics, unsteady aerodynamics, aeroelasticity and fluid dynamics, biomechanics, physics and science in general, flying, hang gliding, biology/nature/wildlife, anything outdoors; boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking, horse back riding, swimming, herp hunting, pond and bay hopping, rolling in the mud, skipping through the meadows, hiding in trees and bushes, wrangling wildlife. Also like studying biology, technology, fixing, designing and building stuff (basically being an engineer), welding, music and arts, physical activity; sports, kung-fu (Shaolin-Wushu Academy, Full Circle Martial Arts Academy), running, rowing, biking, weight lifting, swimming, volleyball, etc. Anyway, I look foward to reading more posts from you all, and engaging in discussions/debates here. Happy Thanksgiving to those of you in the U.S.!

Hello everybody! So excited to be posting here. I'm Froggy, almost 49 years old, and live in beautiful San Francisco, CA. I looked around and lurked on a few threads; by the way, does anyone still use semicolons or are they officially extinct? I also have ADD. Doesn't it show? Anyway... what to say about myself... ex taiko drummer (did a five-year stint with the SF Taiko Dojo), love photography, die-hard Mac user since it first came out,, avid hiker... Found this forum after finding Robert Lancaster's StopSylviaBrowne site (with which I wholeheartedly agree); was sorry to hear that he had suffered a stroke and wish him a most speedy recovery. Most probably you will find me in the Paranormal threads, lurking and maybe participating. Will sign off now.

Can't post a froggy graphic yet? Rats!

Welcome aboard Froggy. Here have a Mintie. And ignore the goat if it bothers you.
Under no circumstances eat any cookies made by Grayman as the forum won't be responsible for any consequences. :D

Would an arthwollipot be in any way related to a whyteatogog?

Hi, folks,

Niggle here. As in "that niggling little voice of doubt in the back of your mind" that refuses to shut up or go away. And I even take meds for that now! :( Anyway, I'm female, 45, a Technical Writer lost in the chilly backwoods of Connecticut, currently searching for a REAL job (you know, the kind with benefits and paid days off?). Yes, I currently suffer under the Curse of the Yellow Badge, also known as jobberitis or contractus terminatus prematuris.

I've been lurking around here for over a year now and finally decided that I should register so I can put in my own bent pin (I might even work my way up to a penny some day!). I read science fiction and fantasy for a break from the technical manuals I have to write and have far too many draft manuscripts of both stashed in my attic. Was raised Catholic and am still trying to recover. Currently an agnostic Pagan and not sure I care any more. Currently owned by one dog and two cats. Not afraid of goats (they're kind of cute). Don't care for oatmeal cookies, but I make the BEST fudge ever, in your choice of flavors, with or without alcohol.

Sorry for the lengthy first post. I'll probably spend most of my time here lurking, so I figured I'd get it over with up front.

I think it is very astute of you to have forestalled the devious offers of cookies and warnings about goats!!:D
I wish I could make fudge - shop-bought stuff just isn't the same.

Welcome.

The Hot Cookie in the Castro made the legendary cookies of TAM 5; we have photographic evidence of their allure. Ah, Hot Cookie in the Castro! DIVINE is the only word that springs to mind. I do have to be careful about how often I indulge in them, so only buy a cookie before the long vigorous walk up Market towards Twin Peaks and Diamond Heights, then reward myself when I get to the top :)
I'm not 100% sure, but it seems so. :pWhat, about whyteatogogs? They have an interesting story - they came about many years back, while I was playing Scrabble with an 8-year-old girl. At one point we got tired of thinking up meaningful words and decided to let our imaginations run wild. I put in "why", she added "teato", I finished with "gog", we both fell down laughing. We then started to think about what the hell a whyteatogog could be, and decided it was some sort of animal. "I think I will never forget the word whyteatogog", - said the girl. I know I never did. Unfortunately I didn't keep in touch with the girl - I wonder if she still remembers... AT one point point I even started writing a poem about them, but got stuck and never finished. Story of my life... (never finishing, that is)

Welcome to the forum! Many here are in the technical fields and/or a member of the undesired leisure class. I am fortunate enough to have a job with benefits and paid days off. although it comes with an irratic schedule as well; haven't had a day off since last Tuesday and am finally having my Thanksgiving turkey today for breakfast. Before I head in to work of course.

Don't care for oatmeal cookies, but I make the BEST fudge ever, in your choice of flavors, with or without alcohol.

Here's something COLONEL and I actually agree on. Fair warning: Should you ever make it to TAM, you will be expected to bring us evidence of your fudge being the best. TAM6 had about 900 attendees, so bring a little extra. :)

Hello folks,

I've been a fan of the site, as well as it's founder ever since I first came across Mr. Randi's videos exposing... well, a lot of people. Long time reader of the front page, and only recently have I felt a real need to sign up for the forums.

You see, I'm an administrator of a website with a purpose not all to different from this site, however it focuses mostly on those who hold some belief beyond all logic and reason. I have recently recieved a number of legal threats and my own community is lacking in a certain experience with the type of person exposed here regularly. I'm going to do some poking around and see if I cannot find a good place to post the details as well as my own questions for the community related to it. But I thought I'd at least say hello.

While the legal implications seem to have completely died off I did post the story over in General Skepticism and The Paranormal under the title Expressions of skepticism and the occasional lawsuit. I'd link, but I'm still to new for that.

Indeed welcome Melissa, I for one am glad to see someone of opinion and willingness to jump right in, not to mention of queenly demeanor. Plenty of ‘fun’ to enjoy and I hope your questions can be answered, if not to your satisfaction, then hopefully at least in a coherent manor (I exclude myself from the latter regard).
