Hello, everybody.
I'm a big fan of the Skeptoid podcasts and was directed to this forum through there. I'm a fifteen year-old high school junior at a private school in South Florida. I'm an ex-PETA member and an ex-vegetarian. I used to participate in the school's Pre-Law Society, although much of what we did was raise money for the Innocence Project. I'm now a member of the school's Pre-Med Society and am planning on becoming a forensic pathologist.

Okay, that attempt at the quote functions didn't work.
Grayman:
Turkey: It's what's for breakfast. Urk. At least I got to have my turkey on the "big day" itself. And for the next several days, of course. Sounds like you work IT?
As for the fudge, 900 is a bit much, but I have made it for a gathering of about 50. The stuff is so rich that a little goes a LOOOONNNNGGGGG way. If I ever make it to TAM, you'll have to have it somewhere colder so the stuff doesn't melt before you can get it on the serving table. But I did manage to mail a batch once. I'm told it got there intact, if a little soft.
Colonel:
I take it you're in New England somewhere? I know there was a gathering of the Skepterati in my home town during the summer. I wanted to crash the party, but I had another engagement (a Ren Faire, as I recall).
Fudge, straight, maple or chocolate: check! I made a killer batch of Maple Walnut Fudge for my dad a couple of years ago. I think he even got a piece or two before the rest of my relatives ate it. I don't normally include nuts, but he's especially fond of that combination. Yes, I take requests.

Hello all! My name's Robert, but everybody except my wife and Mom call me Ottis. (a long story)
I originally posted a question here about a year ago, and rather then someone just telling me what they thought the answer was, I was told how to work it out for myself! Very cool!
I didn't really get into reading and posting here till a few months ago, I changed jobs and have some extra time now. (I'm now the full time fireman on a 103 year old steam locomotive:), I was working 50 hours a week at a sawmill:( )
Anywho, I find this site informative as well as entertaining, Love it!

Hello all!
Well, after months of lurking during my lunchbreaks I figured I should sign up now I'm online at home. Of all the fora (forums?) I've lurked on this one has always impressed me the most. People seem genuinely nice and debates hardly ever descend into flame-wars.
I live in Norwich (rhymes with Porridge, or you can pronounce it Naaaaarrjj if you're local) in creamy old England and I urge you all to visit. It's officially a lovely place.
Like many here (I suspect) I'm a refugee from the woo-movement, having stumbled across some Martin Gardner books a few years back. It scares me to think of the kind of stuff I believed before then!
Don't expect much insightful commentary from me though. It'll mostly be tedious pop-culture references, occassional bouts of paranoia, and your own opinions regurgitated back to you in a garbled form weeks after you've expressed them to me :D Still, I'm sure you can lift me up without me dragging you down.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting involved and finding out what other irrational beliefs I still hold!
Take care, all!

I am not a good English writer, so I think it will take a long time to reach my 50s.
I may not ungerstand many things but I will go step by step.
I am a guest member of ASIOS (Association for Skeptical Investigation of Supernatural) in Japan.
I am currently interested in debunking information of 911 conspracy theories which is not available in Japan.
I am also interested in the activity of Masaru Emoto outside of Japan.
If you have any question about skeptical activity in Japan, please ask me.
I might be able to answer.

Hello, I am a skeptic from Japan.
Ohayou gazaimasu! (Well, it is morning where I live.)
There are several posters who live in Japan including Kitakaze and Robaato.
There is a lot of good information on 9/11 in the Consipiracy Theory area, and Emoto's name does come up every now and then, particularly in regards to a movie known as "What the <bleep> do we know?" and his work with water.
Welcome!

What issues seem to affect Japan the most?
Well, I think the biggest issue in Japan right now is the 9/11 conspiracy theory, because the infamous David R. Griffin made his first appearrance in Japan just about a month ago.
Second comes Mr. Emoto's book "Hiden messages in water".
This book is a big concern because it is used as a teaching material for morality class in some elementally school.
And third comes the homeopathy in my opinion.
Homeopathy was not very popular in Japan but recently it is gaining a big popularity.

Greetings. My name is Jeffrey Brown.
I was drawn here due to some online research I was doing on conspiracy theories.
I found a link to a posting made by someone here named Elentar, entitled: Conspiracy Theories as Examples of Pure Dogma (I'd post the url, but I haven't met the 15 post minimum as yet). I was impressed by the concepts presented in this work, and being an atheist and a skeptic, it seemed like a good idea to join JERF. I enjoy online discussion forums, and am well known for participating in "spirited debate."
As for me, I have a post-graduate education, I served in the U.S. Navy, and I live in "Sin City." I'm a computer nerd, I enjoy good beer, I read and write on a regular basis, and I am constantly reminded that life is filled with delicious irony.

Hello, one of many internet Mushrooms here!
I'm from the UK and I've been following Randi and the JREF's work for some time, but I decided I may as well sign up and discuss things too.
About me? I'm quite into music (for both playing and listening!), games and politics. A strange combination you might think, but it's rather interesting (and sometimes tragic) how often they intersect...
And with that, I shall probably scurry off and investigate the rest of this fine forum you have here!

I suppose they didn't pamper the poor on Christmas day as there weren't any leftovers left yet then. So the poor poor had to spend a whole Christmas day waiting with empty stomachs and stone cold feet for the leftovers to be boxed and handed out to them.

I love astronomy and I love to "enlighten" poor souls attacked by the conspiracy theorists, and in severe cases, religious people.
English is not my first language, so I guess I will lose some of my "enlightening powers", but I will help as much as I can! :D

Hey, Zurack and welcome to the asylum.
Well, I only know of one other Brasilian (do you write Brasil or Brazil?) on the Forum, but I'm sure there are others. (Look up "Luciana"... you'll find her often in Forum Community - but you'll have to get in line behind us other stalkers. There was a song about her - never made the Top 10, but perhaps you've heard of it? The Girl From, If We Were to be Precise, Somewhere Relatively Close to Ipanema, Strictly Speaking )
And as to Astronomy... Do I assume you came this-a-way because of our new Fearless Leader, The (Amazingly) Bad Astronomer. We have a number of astronomy buffs on the forums, not all drawn here because of BA. Watch out for a certain "Hokulele", though. Not only is the name unpronounce-able in Portugese, but she's probably got even more stalkers than Luciana! (Blatantly and shamelessly trying to start a Skepchick catfight.)
And may that be your first lesson.
Rule 1 - Skepchicks are Cool.
I will leave to other Meeters 'N Greeters to lay out the other rules for you. I'm sure some pedantic geek one of the mods would want me to mention, also, that there is such a thing as a Membership Agreement, but those are the formal rules. We regulars can clue you in as to the unspoken set. (Something about cookies,... not certain,... but the topic seems to ring a bell.)

I am studying computer science and applied mathematics and starting this upcoming semester I will be teaching several of the labs for the introductory computer science courses.
I'm into trail running, reading, and long, heated but respectful discussions. And good beer. If you live in the Austin area and can appreciate a quality brew, maybe I'll see you around the Dog and Duck sometime.

Hi there. I am a long time lurker-reader of both the forums and Randi. Not much time in the last year or so, but years back I used to read the 911 conspiracy topics, as well as a few websites I found from reading here. The information I gleaned was very helpful recently. While visiting over the holiday, this man I knew from years ago showed up spouting 911 conspiracy, which seemed to be from the Loose Change movie. I hate that propaganda.
It was very upsetting to a friend who was there, she is feeble minded due to a brain trauma, and she started getting all upset, it was very tense and crazy. But with the knowledge I had from reading here and there I was able to counter almost all of it, even to the point of challenging him to look at websites that explained why the 911 conspiracy nuts are wrong.
I ended up calming her down, and kept my cool. It was the first time I experienced true madness of that sort, and later I found he had converted to a Christian faith church and was all religious as well. It was awful.
The odd thing was how easy it was to remember most of the facts I learned years ago. I thought of Gravy at one point, and this site, wtc7lies.googlepages
So I'm sort of saying thanks to the forum members who have spent so much time and effort on the matter. It really helped. I mean it really saved the situation that day.
Oh, and I just joined but I have read for many years prior. I didn't realize until after I signed up how much easier it is to keep track with an account.
I'm an atheist and skeptic, but I really enjoy magic and illusions. But I always want to know how they are done!
Now I will return to lurking. Keep up the good work.
edit - it said I couldn't post an Url, but it was the wtc7lies one, by Mark Roberts.

Well Colonel, I had to check the dictionary to see if I could possibly qualify as a Prude and I think I could if you don't count everything.
However, last month my church pastor did accuse me of being a devil worshipper when I invited him to the Masonic Lodge for a Christmas party.
Whoa! That's some news!
Been a while since we've hand ANYONE around here who bends knees to the AntiChrist.
Welcome, Roma. Are you sure you wouldn't prefer a mintie?

The Christmas party was for the Job's Daughters, something my daughter belongs to.
The church pastor looked at the Eastern Star emblem on the wall inside the Masonic Temple and called it an upside down pentogram.

Hello everyone,
I've been a lurker on here for a while, mostly following the religious debate threads as well as a couple of the MDC's. I'm very much an atheist and, like most geeks who were shy at high school, think magic tricks are cool.
I have a PhD in particle physics and now work as an IT consultant in England. I enjoy a good debate and will probably dip my hand in every so often in one of Yrrrg's infuriating topics.

Apparently debating about man made global warming there is enough to get you banned, without warning. I hope I'm allowed to have opposing views here without getting bashed on, or banned.. Because I see a lot of people labeling anyone that believes in certain conspiracy theories here, in a negative way. I don't consider myself a "9/11 truther".. i'm just a person that is interested in the straight forward, honest to goodness, truth, when it comes to anything.. Likewise. I also want evidence. Mint has 101 uses apart from lamb.

It can also be drank as a warm or cold Peppermint tea.

18th January 2009, 11:23 AM
Hello, everyone!
I go by Laih, and while always questioning in nature, it wasn't until about two years ago that I became seriously interested in the skeptical movement. I volunteer with several groups that help mentally disabled young adults and children, and Jenny McCarthy's giant steaming pile of bull book "Healing Autism" caught my eye. Couldn't even make it ten pages in before throwing it down in disgust. So I went online to find out what other people thought of it. The sheer amount of support she got was sickening, but I was introduced to fantastic blogs such as the Autism Diva, and to Dr. Paul Offit's wonderful books. I wound up stumbling onto the Bad Astronomer's site, and from there, it was a hop, skip, and a jump to the JREF!
Although my knowledge of various subjects is broad, it's not terribly in depth (unless its about disabilities). I'm not a scientist; I'm a graphic designer and a student. But I will try to add my two cents whenever I feel like I have something useful to add!
I look forward to getting to know all of you!
