I am from Malaysia, now studying psychology in Australia.Whereabouts? I'm pretty sure we can hook you up with a local Skeptic's group.

:big: Just for that, I think we'll make you an Honorary Aussie! :)Noooooooooo!!!!

They are only found in Queensland.Don't pay any attention to him. I was killed by a drop bear on a bushwalk in the Namadgi in 1986.

What? I got better!

Hey Wexer9 and welcome to the forums.
Whereabouts in Canada? We have mucho Canadians on the forums. (By deint of my 10 years in Montreal and Canadian daughter who refuses to take up U.S. citizenship, they actually made me an honorary canuck.)

High school and you're already into skepticism. Cool! What's it like from a peer pressure perspective? What are the young buying into today? (I ask as a new parent - I spread my offspring out and said daughter is 30, but my son is 5 months so I'm preparing myself.)

I'd give the usual "settle in and make yourself at home" cheer, but I see you've already started to make your way around. So.... carry on, then.

Hey, welcome T.R. - I'm not in Australia, but this forum is literally (yeah, literally) overrun with 'em. It's gotten so you can't swing a dead cat in here without knocking one of them off their pack kangaroos. For the most part, Aussies are a social bunch, and we've got just about every corner of that Edforsaken continent covered, so you can probably hook up with someone in your area. They have meet-ups occasionally, so mayhaps you can cure your social blues, too.

Any number of them lurk about in this thread, so watch for replies. And there's an Aussies Only thread ("others keep out", as if anyone would want to hangout with a bunch of crocodile wrestling, beer swilling, marsupial lovers) .

...fair suck of the sav!!!... you've gotta be a true blue, fair dinkum, dinki-dye grouse cobber, digger, sport, ocker maaaaaate before being allowed on the "Aussies Only" thread to get a fair shake of the sauce bottle with us!!!...

My name is Lance

Welcom, and good it isn't Chuck.:)

There was a Green Beret who had four daughters. He was in a habit of worrying about his daughters and always answered the door with a sawed-off shotgun. One night he hears a knock at the door and find a young man standing there. The young man says: "My name is Freddy, I've come to pick up Betty. We're going out for spaghetti. I hope she's ready."The Green Beret thought that was cute so he let them go out.Pretty soon another knock on the door and another young man was there. He sayd: "My name is Lance. I h've come for Nance. We're going to a dance. Is she ready by change?" Again the Green Beret thought it was cute and let them go, Soon another knock on the door with yet another young man standing there. He sayd:"My name is Moe. I'm here to get Flo. Whe're going to a show. Is she ready to go?" Once again the Green Beret thought it was cute and let them go. Again there was a knock on the door and a young man was standing there. He sayd:"My name is Chuck,"........The Green Beret shot him.

I have often been criticized for "not believing in anything" when I politely point out the flaws in astrology, Friday the 13th, alternative medicine, etc.
Some popular pseudosciences today with the kids are: Astrology, CAM, Psychics, Ghosts, and of course, Religion.
And thanks! :)

Greetings, salutations, etc. to one and all.

After having been a lurker for a few months now, in the form of reading forum posts over my lovely wife's shoulder, I have decided to dip my foot in the pool in person.

The (very) short bio:
Sex: Yes, please. I mean male.
Marrital status: Very happily so
Age: Old enough to have a daughter who is out of high school. Of course, she's adopted so that says much less than it might otherwise.
Kids: 1 adopted, 1 biological.
Profession: Software engineer
Pets: 1 cat. I see a dog in my future because I'm outnumbered in the family.

A couple of interesting facts:
* I used to be involved in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). I did a little bit of everything: fighting, bardic, heraldry, costuming, etc. I still have about 60 bolts of fabric in a storage locker that were originally purchased with costuming in mind.
* I have a large number of brain cells wasted involved in remembering songs. Most of the time it expresses itself as being able to sing along with whatever happens to be on the radio, stereo, muzak, etc. However, when I am sick and run a high fever, I go into what my wife calls "jukebox mode," where I will sing pretty much non-stop and take requests. It amused the nurses the one time I was in the hospital with a fever.

I look forward to meeting you all directly after having had the chance to see many of you through my wife's eyes and interests.

Hey, Welcome LyTinWeedle.....

Frankly, you sound a little crazy. (You'll fit right in.)

Is the wife a regular here? You might as well tell us and break some hearts. Oh, not mine, of course,... I'm a dashingly handsome man about town and in a relationship and proud new papa and all that stuff.... It's those other nerds. Yeah, them. If there's a skepchick on the boards, someone's hitting on her!

There's usually something going on in the way of a music thread. The old standby, useful in building up post count so that you can get avatars and linking rights and cookies and discounts on the Forum Golf Course is "What Music Are You Listening To Right Now"... And since you seem to have earworm problems, you could probably just park there for a while. If you do requests... I've had this urge to listen to old Manfred Mann all day, for some reason.

Welcome aboard!

Manfred Mann? If I were you I'd make an appointment as soon as is humanly possible with a good psychiatrist.

You're already no fun.

Oh, well, give the goat a pat, say nice things about Kenworth Trucks, (don't forget the bowing three times in the direction of Kent, WA), have one of Grayman's cookies. You're coming in well behaved, honorable, and kind.

Having been ushered into this present mortal incarnation just a few miles down the pike from where Harry and Edgar (re)formed their fine company, how could I not be a fan?

Unless you meant how I tend to position my feet and body while atop a Kenworth? In that case, I favor the Larry Craig wide stance. Better balance in the turns.

Don't worry. :) I just finished reading a book about the early 19th century and was amused how adversaries (captains of ships of opposing navies, for instance) would sign letters calling out the other with something like:

"I remain, sir, your most obedient and humble servant".

It was the standard way of signing letters in the civil service here until about the mid 1970's. Meant that you would apply for something and you would get back a letter which basically said "get lost" and it was signed "your obedient and humble servant"

They don't do it now though :(

Scientist Keith

This is Scientist Keith. I'm a retired Chemist and a strong advocate of rational beliefs and critical thinking. I am a strong atheist and have no belief in anything supernatural or mystical.

Although I was once a fundamentalist Christian, my faith has been cured.

There were many factors leading to my departing my upbringing as a fundamentalist Christian, but one of the main contributors was that I actually read the Bible. Not just the usual passages Christians quote and are comfortable with, I finally got around to reading the whole Bible. It is an understatement of "Biblical proportions" to say that I was shocked and stunned at what the Bible said and at what it did not say (but I'd been led to believe it said).

Beyond the scientific errors and ludicrous claims, I was appalled at the morality that the Bible endorsed. I'd been taught that god was all-loving and forgiving, but I found commandment for parents to execute their children, to bash babies' brains out and to force women to marry their rapists with no possibility of divorce.

Except when I debate Christians, I no longer think much about the Bible or my former life as a Christian. I mainly spend time with my family and try to keep up on the latest advances in science and technology.

Welcome buddy. So you are a fence sitter hey? May I suggest a great book you should read. Victor J. Stenger. ''God, The Failed Hypothesis.''

No I'm not a fence sitter. For all practical purposes I'm a strong atheist. For me, the 'Problem of Evil' is the cast-iron decider for the Abrahamic religions, just no getting round it, and other conceptions of God fall foul of similar absurdities.

But God merely as an abstract 'first cause', or a purely transcendent entity, is often by definition epistemically inaccessible to us, thus forcing a very weak form of agnosticism. In the same way that if someone says to you that in the remotest vacuum of space, a particle winked in to existence for a few nanoseconds and then winked out again, having no cause, and no effect on anything else, even though there is nothing warranting a belief in the particle - apart from the nutter telling you about it, who has 'faith' that the particle existed - strictly speaking, and again in a very weak sense, you have to remain agnostic about the particle's existence, on nothing more than a technicality really, although of course on balance (due to the laws of physics, Occam's Razor etc.) you probably shouldn't believe in the particle!

It's important to keep in mind the distinction between the theological type descriptions of God (the miracle worker, smiter, the punisher etc.) and the more philosophical type descriptions of God (abstract, perfect, transcendent etc.) because they are pretty incompatible, but in debate, religious people (apart from very careful theologians) will switch between the two, and try and get you on the technicality!

As for pantheism, I agree, the whole debate becomes semantic!

Hi folks. I'm just an old fart who makes stuff.

I originally came here because I was mentioned in a couple of threads and it showed in Google. (doesn't everything?)

I usually hang out at TheMagicCafe.com, where I have friends & do business.

I don't know what the hell I'll do here but it looks like fun and I'm definately opinionated enough to participate with at least a batch of years of critical thinking and totally lack any residue of political correctness.

Two beliefs I haul around with me.

1. The Golden Rule of Confucious.

2. Congress is entirely made up of crooked self serving morons.

1a ammendment: A deep belief that there is only one comeback for somebody's PC rantings... "So what."

I hope to be of use here. If not, see 1a. :D

Welcome Doug, I for one am glad to see someone of strong opinion (not to mention old farts) who is not interested in political correctness.

As the old saying goes “If ‘pro’ is the opposite of ‘con’ what is the opposite of progress?”

Right. I am your actual Demon on the Gate this evening. I prised that sword from cold, dead, angelfingers over 6000 years ago. Wish I'd thought to take the damn sheath.

Don't stand dithering in the way, get your little booties inside and start posting so the senior demons can rip the flesh from your quivering little arguments. Git along there, little doagies! No loitering!

Retireded. I be 58 on the 27th of February. Don't have to kiss ass, uh, be politically correct anymore. Ok, near as much. 31 years worked for EXXon at a coal mine. 300 or so skydives made. 'Bout 300 hours flying. I soloed two students in my plane and really meant to get my pilot license. But, well, you know how shotgun weddings go.

Father, a Marine in WWII, discouraged thoughts of military. 2S deferred thru college till I flunked Calculus and had to go for pre-inductions physical 2 weeks before the draft was over. But was 6 pounds over weight. And they say obesity is bad for your health. I have a deep sense of gratitude for the veterans. Dropped all my physics and math classes. 17 hours of Philosophy for a year and a half and out with a BA. Pastor, Church of Gospel Ministry.

Much interest in physics, particularly electron stuff, comedic philosophy, deep base humor, self as revealed by that outside myself ( see Hegel), backgammon, illusions, fixation of belief (see C.S. Peirce), depth psychology (see Experiment in Depth by P.W. Martin), quantizing sanity, ecstatic visions, and ,uh, intellectual conversation (see gnawed.com).

The TV series "House" rules the doctor shows, soaps, and dramas. "Deadwood" superior for honesty.

Influences. Lensman series by E.E. "Doc" Smith. Read Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" in grade school and think his concept of citizenship at least sounds interesting. Dean Ing rules. Orson Scott Card has great stuff.
Religion (Mom made us go to church on sunday, bible school in summer.)

Family life. Too damn complicated for me to figure out. 3 stepkids (one from my ex stepping out and who I love dearly), 1 of my own making, one ex. Married now second time and I guess I've a stepson by her too. Whew!

Expertise. RS-485 networks at the mine. Radios there and phone system as well as anything electric. Solid state controls. PLCs. Certified welder (stick, eighth inch, flat, vertical, overhead), Illinois shot-firer, Mine examiner, Mine manager certification papers. Ham radio in high school. Four years of football.

Music. Trombone in grade and high school. Tuba. 6 years piano in grade school, but seems to have stuck only a little. Our band after high school was called the Plastic Axe. We couldn't get gigs as Beecher Meat Incorporated. I played lead guitar.

Driving.
Motorcycles. None now. Autocrossed a Suzuki Swift GT 2 years running at the SCCA Solo II Nationals.

Health.
I used to weigh 200 pounds...............When I was a fetus. I was catchin' some rays this spring in the front yard 'till the 5th grade ecology group tried to roll me back in the nearby creek.
Crushed by a heliminer in 1979. Broke my left femur. Lucky the tail of the damned thing wasn't up a few more inches. Today my left knee hurts when I walk. No cartilage left but I ain't a gonna do all the **** they want me to do to get a new one. Lose weight. Rebreak the broke femur to straighten out the mend. Screw it. Eyes Lasiked for monovision mode. And I sleep with a CPAP. A godsend I wished I'd had 30 years earlier.

Records.
Autocross game on the old Race Car Drivin' arcade machine.
November of 2006 I broke the 2000 meter World record row for 80 year old women on my Concept II E ergometer rowing machine. Hey, you try beating them.

Dislikes.
Bible thumpers. Ex. Rhubarb.

Mistakes.
I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong. November 5th, 1994. But seriously, the way to choose the woman to marry by her being the first one I get pregnant, yeah, that technique could use some improvement.

'Nuff. Much love to all here.

Welcome back buddy. You should check out a few of Richard Dawkins books as well. ''A River Out Of Eden,'' ''The Selfish Gene, The Blind Watchmaker.'' to name a few. Also these titles may interest you. John D Barrow- ''The origin of the Universe. Paul Davies- ''The last three minutes.'' [But remember this author received a Templeton Prize] Another great read is Richard Leakey's " The Origin of Humankind.'' A book I'm reading for the second time at this moment is a great read. Titled ''God The Failed Hypothesis'' by Victor J Stenger. [ a physicist as is Paul Davies]

Hi all, I've lurked around the JREF website for around 1 year. I decided to create an account in January but I never got around to actually posting so I think I'll start now .

My name is Saad and I currently reside in Waterloo, Canada and am in my last year of High School. I am 17 years old and I would say relatively new to skepticism and critical thinking (though I guess I would have used it previously just not well) and both were inspired by my High School English class (The SWIFT blog helped me in understanding why critical thinking was important and in a way fun too).

My hobbies are magic and trying to build anything that I would see as a random object that perhaps not many people are interested in.

As for my religious views, I classify myself as not sure about God, but I find it improbable.

A very warm welcome to one and all. Especially HannonRJ. Very pleased to have a few here older than me. [I'm 60, soon to hit 61, in June] Have you all paid homage to our goat? If so help yourself to a minty and a cup of cold beer. :D

Hi all :) I'm Jennifer, I came here via the BadAstronomy site and lurked for a while, but then decided to register. It's so nice to know that there are people out there who think for themselves.
I'm a librarian, I read a lot and widely (although that is not strictly a job requirement), my favourite authors being Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Tad Williams, Franz Kafka, Truman Capote and Carl Sagan. I share my home with a lot of pets (feathery, furry, scaly and chitiny), I live in Germany, I'm 30 years old and I like pen and paper role-playing.
My skeptic act for the day: deleting some von Daeniken UFO-literature from one of the school libraries I work at. Muahaha. :D

Hey Jedediah, and welcome.
We actually have a few librarians here, most notably, of course my favoritest mod of all times and queen of the budgie appreciation threads - LibraryLady. So if one of those feathered critters you mention happens to be a budgie, I'm thinking.... Turf War!!!!!

Couldn't just reclassify von Daeniken as "Juvenille Humor"?

Whoops been posting before I came here:o

Oh well, I found this forum not long after I watched Jame Randi talking about Homeopathy on YouTube. I lurked for a few days mostly around the 9/11 threads before I signed up to ask some questions, and to be a little bit of a stinker to the kooks (never mean about it).

I like this forum because I don't think I'm all that smart, so I have a lot of questions and lurking here (and other places) starts me on the path to answer a lot of them, and I work 12 hour a day from the late afternoon to the early morning so having something to do is good too.

I have read a lot of post from here that say all the debunking and fact checking that happens here isn't so much for the people lost in their beliefs, but for the lurker on the fence, well as a lurker (but not so much on the fence) I thank you for what you do.

Roma Hart: at the moment a weekly round of Deadlands (Weird West, think Wild West meets a bit of Steampunk and quite a few weird monsters), a bi-weekly round of Cthulhu and the occasional Vampire evening. My favourite is 7th Sea, though, either the classic one or the 1880-7th Sea we've come up with. I've also played Vampire Dark Ages, Aberrant, Alternity, Star Wars and Shadowrun (didn't agree with me, though).

arthwollipot: a colony of hissing roaches and one of feeder roaches (Blaptica dubia), a colony of Assassin Bugs (Platymeris biguttata) and ten land hermit crabs (Coenobita clypeatus and compressus). Until recently I also had a Whip Spider (Damon variegatus).

Foolmewunz: actually, five of them. I think I'll go looking for that thread now :D
I wanted to buy Sagan's Science as a Candle in the Dark for the library instead of the Daeniken, but at the moment, there's no German edition on the market. I can't believe it.

Regarding the males, we have to keep them separate. Eric is very territorial, and will attack the ducks, geese, goats, cows and horses if we don't keep him in his own field. Emerson also becomes territorial if he is separated from Eric.

The females all get along together in their own field. We hire a stud for breeding the goats.

Hello everyone! Thought I'd make my first post on the forums after registering 202 days ago.

A few words about myself: I've been interested in skeptical things for several years now. I originally found JREF and SWIFT through Bad Astronomy blog, and it has given me enormously (including a foster child through Plan, many of you may remember the SWIFT article called 'In Response to a Request'). I have mostly been a passive skeptic, but I hope to slowly be able to become more active in the community. And hopefully next year I'll be able to attend TAM, which has been a long time dream for me.

Lately I've been hanging around on the #jref IRC channel by the name timo, feel free to drop me a line.

Edit: Oh. My library books are constantly late.

Hi there everyone,
My name is James Ashton and I'm a 17 year old sixth form student and performing magician. My love of magic began at 6, and that in turn led onto an obsession with scams (thank to Darwin Ortiz' books) such as the 3 card monte and the shell game. Since my primary interest in magic is card magic, I fostered a keen interest in card cheats and their lives and methods. This led nicely onto an interest in all scam artists and scams in general. A few years ago, I discovered James Randi and the JREF-thanks to the JREF youtube page I was able to watch many of his 80s appearances with psychics such as Sylvia browne and Ellie Burnstein etc. Thanks to Randi, I was inspired to think critically about all around me, but with particular emphasis on so called psychics and mediums, as well as religion. I look forward to joining in on the discussion on the forum- see you on the boards!

Hello everyone! I'm a twenty-something and I'll be graduating with my bachelor's degree in biology in December. I came to the JREF via Skeptic's Guide, to which I have been loyally listening for over a year. I am very passionate about psychology, biology, and astronomy and read every popular book on the subject that I can get my hands on. I follow the evolution/creationism "controversy" closely as I was a victim of a lack of comprehensive biology education at the high school I attended. I work on a volunteer basis in a Psych/Neuroscience lab in hopes of getting into a cognitive psychology graduate program.

I am a very sociable person and have just become socially active in skeptics/athiest groups locally. I already bought my plane ticket to TAM, but I will be traveling alone from the midwest so I joined the forums to attempt to make a few connections.

I have a really good friend from college who just turned to the "dark side", i.e. she's become annoyingly active in the far right libertarian movement, buying into all sorts of conspiracy theories, and is obviously unaware of all of the fallacies she uses in her reasoning.

I'm quite humbled by the amount of highly intelligent and quick-witted people on the forum and really look forward to meeting some of you!

Hello folks,

My name is Jim and this is my first ever post and what better place to make it than the 'welcome thread'. I have been aware or Randi for years but never thought to visit this site, I actually found a link to this site from the humour site cracked.com and then wondered why I wasn't here a few years ago. I'm 27 (today as a matter of fact) and have had a healthy interest in the paranormal, science and debunking things in general for as long as I can remember. I also like music and sports but this is not the time or place to discuss them. :)

When I was a child (around 7 or 8) I used to read alot of magic books and remember going to Bernards Magic Shop in Melbourne with my dad quiet regulary (I wish I had kept the stuff I used to have, oh the memories). I'm not really into the magic side of things anymore and I now have more interest in mentalism and the psychology behind magic. I'm not sure how to put it but I hope you get the general idea.

Anyhow since today is my birthday, I'm going to try and find some beer.

Cheers

P.S - Sometimes my spelling and grammar are not the best, but I try my best dammit!

Welcome Altered Statesman and Happy Birthday Jim!

Well, if you're spending your birthday posting on a web forum, you're already one of us: A hopeless geek. Geekdom is cool (just ask Geek Goddess)!

We have a few people hanging around in Conjurer's Corner, but most of us just go there to learn how tricks are done, and there's a certain Mr. Randi who doesn't really allow that kind of info, so it's mostly guys comparing notes.

Join into the rest of the fray. There's pretty much something for everyone, ultimately.

I think you'll find another few Melbournites (Melbourneans?) around here. I'll let themselves make proper introductions. But you can head over to Humor and the "Aussies Only" thread. (Just tell 'em you're a Kiwi. You know how much all Aussies love and respect Kiwis. You'll make friends in a jiffy.)

Actually, I've been to Melbourne and a few other spots in Eastern Australia, and I think with your arrival we now have just about the entire population of Australia on these Forums (at least it seems that way.... it could just be the ungodly noise that Aussies make wherever they go).
