Femke,
Van Hooijdonk is one of my all-time favourite players. He always played with total professionalism when he was here. He got treated quite badly by the press when he left in my opinion, but he still spends a lot of time in Istanbul. He is really a class act .

I am an old school guy, when I was a kid playing soccer, one of my heroes was Johann Cruyff. I remember he came to play in the old American soccer league (NASL) and he scored one goal after dribbling about 60 yards through the opposing team. It was awesome.
How the hell has such a small country produced so many great players?
Anyway, see you around.

Hello, my sweet internet handle is popscythe.
I find that my viewpoint does fall in line with many of those that I've read on this forum, but I decided to join when I read some really, really, really @#$%ing poor "arguments" from "my side".
The internet has a way of debasing anything and anyone who touches it, I am well aware, but I look forward to adding a few things here and there.

Hello, I'm a new member and I'm introducing myself here! Found this site after perusing various 9/11 Truth forums (most notably 911movement.org - now defunkt). I found the conspiracy theories regarding 9/11 fascinating, fascinating in the sense that I couldn't believe that so many people bought into their crackpot ideas. The ones that angered me the most were the no-planers (like Killtown) and the no-brainers (like WebFairy). They angered me so much that I decided to do a point by point rebuttal of every one of their misinformed theories, my research brought me to the JREF, where I soon learned that they had already been proved wrong, over and over again and alas, my crusade was rendered irrelevent. Been lurking for about a year, decided to join last night! So that's why long winded tale of how I found you.
Also I'm an atheist and I believe that global warming is real.

Sorry I hadn't posted earlier, as I've been bopping around here for about a month.
I'm a long time lurker who recently started posting because I noticed that some intelligent bigfoot conversations were taking place here. I'm a long-time member and resident skeptic on the BFF where my handle is "Saskeptic."
My interests are largely in wild animal (usually birds) conservation at broad scales, so debating the finer points of an alleged rare big mammal in North America has always appealed to me. My interest in skepticism as a wider world view stems from my long term involvement in challenging the anti-Darwin crowd on their unfounded assertions, and my more recent discovery of the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe. Through the SGU, I've learned how damaging woo can really be, and I've taken it upon myself to rout it out wherever I find it on a certain university campus in the Bible Belt where I spend a lot of my time.

Hi folks, it's Tim. My account was just validated so I figured the right thing was to say helleu... I'm here because it's the only source I could find where a few people have actually discussed Human Design - and I suppose I have a few things I would like to share about it... I hadn't heard of James Randi until yesterday either, but I've already seen most of the videos that are circulating and I watched one of his seminars. He's amazing indeed. I like to think I've already figured out life, but the deeper I look the more sidetracked I get. I'm studying to be a nurse, and hope to get into psychiatry, just for the fun of it.... Alrighty, I have a post about Human Design I need to reply to, although it's a about 3 years late, but better late than never... see you around, and good to be here! peace

Welcome Tim. I see you are interested in human design. What exactly do you mean by human design?
Hi amb, thanks.... Human Design in a concept that aims to explain peoples personalities by integrating many forms of science and "science" (such as genetics, but also astrology)
As I've not yet submitted 15 posts I may not post a link (even from randi.org itself) but you can find it by searching for "human design" - it's called "human design - someone save me"
Cheers!
EDIT: no, actually you can't find it like that.... I forgot that many people use the term "Human Design" to denote the concept of "Intelligent Design", and seeing as there's a lot of talk about the latter, the former is shadowed over. You can instead paste "showthread.php?t=70932" after the .org/ in your address bar. That should do it...
amb
14th December 2009, 03:25 AM
You should not use the words science and astrology in the same sentence. :)

Anyway, I'm a 28 year-old agnostic atheist, who fancies herself quite the skeptic. And since there's a definite shortage of other skeptics in my life, I am glad that there is a forum like this, where I can read and talk (if I dare) and learn about many different subjects.
Oh and what's this I hear about eating hamsters?

I can’t really remember how I arrived here actually. I think I might’ve stumbled onto some information on James Randi somewhere and followed some links, and voilà! But it know it wasn’t through Skepsis. I only just looked up Skepsis for the first time because of you mentioning it. For some reason, I never actually look for information in Dutch at first, unless it’s a specifically Dutch subject. Google searches in English usually turn up much more interesting results. Ah, well, no not cold -0 Celsius (31 F) and about a cm (half an inch) of snow which is disappearing rapidly. We haven't had much of a winter lately, last year winter was on a Thursday (precisely a day after I planted a vine, which promptly decided that it did not want to live like this).
Oh, you touch a sore spot there: all Friesians (inhabitants of Friesland, the province, where the Skating Tour of the Eleven Cities is held) get the Elfstedenkoorts (=fever) as soon as the thermometers hover near the freezing point for more than a day. The last real Elfstedentocht was held in the 90's, and most people are despairing it will never take place again.
Nice of you to google one of our sporting traditions!

ETA: I stand corrected: in Friesland the frost is more persistent, and the eyes are sparkling tentatively, I was informed.

Well, I knew of the race - just didn't have its name at hand.
If you want an idea of the American knowledge of Holland/Netherlands, google "Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates". That and the little boy from Haarlem is about all that any of us learned utnil about the age of 15.
You know that I hadn't even heard of Hans Brinker until an American mentioned him to me? He is more famous at your side than with us, I'm afraid. And speaking about stereotypes: until my 15th I thought all Americans were Archie Bunker. :D
Can't blame you for not knowing a tiny country at the other side of the world with funny winter habits. Thank FSM for teh interwebs, now we can educate ourselves.

Hey! I've been a member and admin at AtheistForums, and InfidelGuy before it, and for some reason that site has stopped loading on my work computer a couple weeks ago. Might have something to do with the fact that we're still running IE6 here. I've been familiar with JREF & Randi for a long time, even using the 9/11 threads here to find info for a couple debates I was involved in on the subject. As an avid slacker, I needed a new outlet to avoid doing work at work, so I joined here. I've been an atheist of some measure at least since high school, and looking back, I don't think I ever really believed having always been a skeptic and fan of science. Hi, just joined after having issues creating my account. My thanks to whomever sorted those:) Glad to be on here now as I have read much! Also visit the Richard Dawkins messageboard and a few other skeptic sites thanks to links from members here.
I am a twentysomething male from Scotland, happily divorced, lived in SE Asia for a few years, now back at home and still searching for meaning without a clue how to make it through life. Enjoy many sports, old music (OLD!), walking my dog, and the beauty of this place we inhabit. Shame about the majority of our species though, and I include myself in that comment:)
One of my primary aims here is to rationalise/debunk the last remaining vestiges of woo that i have wasted a few years of my life pondering. I have never been religious, always slightly doubted the woo, but there are still a couple of things that bother me. I don't know what made me suddenly reject it all, as I looked into parapsychology quite heavily, and I always figured it would reinforce my thoughts. I will say that it was a childhood fear of alien abduction (after watching a film called Fire in the Sky) that got me into the whole paranormal steez and praying that it was all untrue. So I am as guilty as anyone in looking for confirmation in this regard.
But here I am with my scraped through Geology BSc, freshly skeptical attitude, a somewhat open mind, no job, no career, no hope, but I like to think a little common sense. Anyway, I will mention my life with the woo as I post more and ask questions later, but for now, I look forward to talking to the folks here, deprecating myself (I don't always) and contributing where I can. Cheers!

I don't think Dylan has ever been on the forum, but there is still active 9/11 debate. One of our own, Gravy, aka Mark Roberts, has so successfully demolished truthers over many years that he doesn't hang out here so much now - his job was done. But you still see the same tired arguments raised every now and then.

Wow. It's hard to believe people like that would be on a James Randi discussion board of all places. There's nothing worse than a 911 truther. There really isn't. Once you've committed to that point of view, it's almost too embarressing to admit you were wrong....:)
Edit: Forgot to add that I've seen the debate that Mark Roberts had against Dylan Avery and that other boob on youtube. It was fantastic. It's like a professor arguing with two freshmen in his class who haven't done the reading anyways, if that makes any sense. I still remember in that debate that the fatter guy kept saying "our contention is" like 80 different times. I find that phrase in particular to be one that confused/dumb people use to try to make themselves sound smart.
So Mark's name on here is Gravy? I'm guessing there's a way to view his posts then. Thanks.

Hello everyone.
I stumbled upon James Randi's website from Robert Lancaster's superb "Stop Sylvia Browne" site, which I have been addicted to for the past week...
I think both James Randi and Robert Lancaster themselves are true prophets, spreading the truth to people, and opening their eyes. I have nothing but the utmost respect for them.
I'm a 23-year-old Atheist, and former Catholic that grew up in Catholic School. As far back as I can remember, I was always skeptical of things, and asking questions.
Anyway, I'll keep this short and sweet...
Most of my beef is with Sylvia Browne and other "psychics" at the moment, but you will be seeing me comment on other topics from time to time.
My beef with Browne, however, is personal. You see, my mother has been a follower of hers for quite some time. She owns about a dozen of Browne's books, and even considered booking that ridiculous cruise that Browne was doing. So sadly, by purchasing her books, my mother too, was another victim of Browne's.
Thanks to Mr. Lancaster, I was able to show my mother not only videos, but pictures, documents, witness accounts, etc, all proving that Browne (and her accomplice Montel) is a fraud.
Yeah, I know I said short and sweet. Sorry. :D
PS: If Mr. or Mrs. Lancaster gets a chance to read this, that website logo made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants.

Hei, everyone! I've heard JREF mentioned numerous times on other fora, but when I saw the Skeptic Secret Santa video yesterday on Why Won't God Heal Amputees, it inspired me to come on over and sign up.
I've had a bit of a bumpy ride as far as belief and critical thinking go. I started out fine by going "WTF is this nonsense???" when I read the Bible as a child, but through the intervening years I've also wasted a lot of time on things I *wanted* to be true.
Like magic, for instance. And pantheons of interesting gods (I still have a soft spot in my heart for the Asgard crowd). And dragons. Fortunately, I've been able to redirect most of the woo-woo into my writing, where I can have magic, Thor, Loki, *and* a horde of dragons all in the same room. :p
I'm a regular contributor at WWGHA and Exchristian.net, with an occasional post over at the Richard Dawkins forum.
In real life, I work at a large hospital where I type examination reports. Up until recently, I was practicing Shotokan karate, but am on the sidelines for a few months because of knee problems. I'm also studying classical clarinet, living in an ancient house with two other female artists (My partner, a photographer; and my daughter, a digital artist and writer), attempting to teach myself Icelandic, and plotting to take over the world with my Dark Legion of cats.

Hi, folks,
Time to do the intro thing, since I've been posting a bit. Been looking for a site that allows political discussion and social commentary that isn't overly infested with fly-bys, ad-homs, and so on. Nowhere is perfect, and this site came recommended, so having a go.
My on-line identity:
Hlafordlaes ðe Liurning Cnicht is from:
OE Hlaf-gard, or "loaf-guard," Modern English "Lord," + -less, so Lordless.
OE ðe Liurning Cnicht or "the learning boy," meaning "disciple," (source of Modern English "knight.")
Lordless, the disciple, at your service.
When using it in a post, feel free to shorten it all to Hlaf. I am only half serious most of the time, anyway.

I've been interested in skepticism for a few years now. I'm mostly past the point where I'm willing to spend hours/days/weeks arguing the toss with true believers (but still enjoy the occasional coherent argument) I'm here to enjoy hanging out with the skeptically minded.
I'm lucky enough to have met some of you lovely people at TAM London. I've been meaning to post here ever since, but haven't quite found the time until now.
I'm Australian, but I live in the UK now, this is my 7th winter languishing away in the cold and missing the sunshine in Aus, but I do enjoy it here, so shouldn't complain too much.
I spend my free time listening to skeptical/ science themed podcasts, reading, watching the F1, cooking and enjoying the occasional (frequent) glass of wine. Not to mention way too much time spend at my computer.

Thanks, Jeffexor! But "prophets"? I must admit, I didn't see that coming. :)
So, what was your mom's reaction to the site?
Glad you liked the logo - I had fun designing it. It's about the only "snarky" thing on the site.
Yes, prophets! Of truth, hehe. My mother's reaction was a mixture of shock, sadness and anger (anger being the strongest). We considered burning Browne's books, since we don't wanna give them away (and enhance her cult following). I can't thank you enough for your website. We have consumer watchdog groups and websites, but we have none for psychics... Until yours.

First off I want to thank Czarcasm for your tweet. Reading what Psychicuk aka Madhobbit/Jamie wrote on this message board made me sick. I can't have this creep exploit my friend
My name is Jessica, I currently live in Houston Texas. On 1/08/91 my friend Jeremy Delle committed suicide. Pearl Jam wrote a song supposedly inspired by Jeremy, in turn this song has inspired 3 people to claim to speak with Jeremy's ghost. It's very upsetting for me to see these videos and I want them to stop.
I have been corresponding with Madhobbit/Jamie Cole for a few months now, trying to find out what he knew about Jeremy (which isn't a damn thing). He's not psychic, he is a stalker and a liar.
I can not contact him in any manner, he has blocked me from everything. The coward will not answer any of my questions.

Hello, all,
I've been lurking this forum for a few weeks now. Can't remember how I stumbled upon it, but I'm glad I did.
I've been a skeptic since college, but never really felt the need to be active about it. Recently, though, there seems to be an increasing amount of pseudoscience and general woo around. Perhaps I am just noticing it more. Either way, I find it alarming.

That's my problem at the moment. I'm in too many forums to pay proper attention to all of them. But I find this one the one I'm more comfortable in. The Richard Dawkins site has no social intercourse forums such as found here. At a recent stage they decided to dump all social forums except for science, atheist, religious and such. I also feel comfortable there but not as much as here as my posts show. I have twice as many here as there.
FRDB is also another forum I post in, but very lightly. There is only so many hours in the day, and some of us actually do have to work. :D

Come over here to put yourself onto the cruise roll call, and welcome to the forum!
Thanks! I'm already on the roll call, actually. I'm in the "Veterans" section with Krelnik. Can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to the trip.

Hi everybody, Pennie from Denmark here.
After meeting some JREF people at a recent party in Biggelswade, I was brainwashed into joining this most excellent forum. I have been here less than 12 hours and already Im addicted.
This may answer the question: "Where are all the Minties".
I've warned newbies before that there is something in those Minties.

Alas. Our efforts at protecting the youth of today continue to go unheeded. :(
How soon they forget (http://forums.randi.org/showpost.php?p=4764895&postcount=10312) ...
Urban Dictionary. (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=minties)
minties,
noun (pl): Hot broads who put out.
"Are there going to be any minties there tonight who will give mad domage?"
or, alternatively ...
noun (pl): testicles, particularly those freshly coated with Gold Bond medicated body powder which contains menthol
"Matt, goddamnit, I can smell your minties across the room!"
...that there is something in those Minties.
Something for everyone, apparently.

Ah, this one is mine, I do the dutchies! Hi mcvries, welkom.
:welcome2
Do come in from the thaw, hang up your coat and please leave your boots at the door. Did you have any trouble finding us?
Have some fresh goats milk, and if you're up to it, try some of graymans oatmeal cookies.
And after that, off you go, pick a thread about any strange fenomena you fancy (what are you in to? UFO's, Jesus's face in toast, ghosties?), and start posting away.

Goats milk? Won't that offend the goat? It's hers I suppose.. :-)
Thanks Femke, i think i won't have any trouble finding a topic, since for me it's 'all of the above'. And combo's of them ;-). (Did you hear that story about an UFO? It was controlled by ghosts, had a shipload off toast with jezus' face in them. True story!)
Dutchies are yours.. Why, your one yourself?
Thanks all for the welcome any way, i've found this through some of the podcasts i listen to by the way.

Well deduced from my location. There aren't many from the Netherlands, so I like to be there to welcome the few who manage to find us.

Ok, so I have only in recent months discovered the whole idea of the skeptics and jref... and I gotta say I love it. It's no longer just me getting incredibly annoyed at all the stupid people that think things like that the LHC is going to create black holes that will eat the earth or the moon landing hoax on any number of things the media reports.
I joined up here because heard about TAM Australia :D and seriously I can't wait. The only thing that has me thrown is all the aussie food references. I've heard people love Tim Tams and I get that one due to The Amazing Meeting = TAM... but Minties and Vegemite??? What on earth is the connection?

I'm Joe, undergrad working on a Journalism Major with a Natural Science expertise. Don't even remember how I stumbled onto the skeptical movement online, but I'm glad however it happened, happened. Outside of school and skeptical site reading I'm a Sportsblogger. That's actually what got me into this forum. Someone mentioned in passing a NFL thread on this forum on the site I write/mod on, I checked it out, and was happy to find another place with intelligent, lively NFL discussion. Branching out now and enjoying the rest of the forum. You all have attracted some very interesting characters.

Hello all, new fish here.
Looking forward to good discussions. Some of the topics I like to discuss involve biology, medicine, agriculture, and environment to name a few. Have an undergraduate B.Sc. degree in Agriculture, which has helped to nurture and grow my skeptical sensibilities. I'm starting a new job, out in the workforce, paying off the loans!
Looks like a big forum here. Cheers!

That was how I meant it but I was referring to certain posters who I had already run across who seem a little "unbalanced".

Joe had told me about some of the woo peddlers he's seen. And I don't know which thread you might have been referring to, Joe, but you also mentioned some holocaust deniers; any of us who click into the History subforum can see which threads and therefore which posters are among the candidates.
Or maybe he was talking about me. :boggled:
;)

Could be. But it takes a little context and therefore time to appreciate comprehend understand Shemp.
But Pllory... oh, no. We all understand him right off the bat! Clear as day. ;)

I totally understand the reasoning behind the no links for 15 posts. Not so much on the avatar rule, but that won't bother me for too much longer.

Welcome, Greg, and all the rest.
If you have a problem with a rule or policy you can complain in the Forum Management section rather than simply denying yourself the pleasure. The reason those policies exist, however, is very valid and not intended to alienate new comers but rather protect the boards from the evil robots and such.
