Wow, its great to finally be a member. I look forward to some great arguments (in the legal sense, of course).
I guess, to be brief, I should tell you that I don't believe in beliefs (including yours, whoever, whatever you may be) and I am very skeptical, especially of Skeptics.
Brush off your baloney detection kits, kiddies, go take a good, hard, penetrating look in the mirror, and get ready, cause here I am....

Goats milk? Won't that offend the goat? It's hers I suppose.. :-)
Milking the goat is much less offensive than what used to be done to her.

Hey all,
I've been lurking these forums for a while now, and figured that it's time I registered. Don't know if I'll post much or anything, but I guess time will tell.
From what I've seen so far, this forum attracts more than its fair share of nuts (or so one would hope) but overal this seems like a nice place with some cool people. :)
Some stuff about myself:
I'm 19 years old, Dutch, and an atheist. Technically I suppose I'm an agnostic, since there is no certainty about any deity's existence, but I feel that using that term would implicate that I consider the idea of a god interfering with our daily lives significantly more likely than the existence of unicorns living in my sock drawer (and I checked just this morning), so calling myself an atheist should prevent any confusion on that part I think.
I'm not a firm proponent of any specific political ideology, though admittably I haven't spent as much time following politics as I probably should have. I study economics (International Bachelor for Economics and Business to be precise, but that's too wordy) at Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
My overall philosophy can best be described as Nihilistic I think, though I don't normally use that term because it's ambiguous and tends to make people upset. So to clarify: I'm not an anarchist or a chriminal, I just try to refrain from believing in anything irrational, including such things but not limited to: Magic, gods, humans being 'special' in any way, some people being intrinsically 'better' than others, opinions in general being holy in any way, morals being anything other than opinions (though they may have a common root in culture/ancestry, this again does not make them holy), and unicorns.
So, to summarise: Hi. :)

Hi and welcome to the forum have a cookie,a fresh glass of goats milk . a hamster roll and a Mintie , Pat the Goat on the head when you see it ,also return any over due library books .
Now please answer this question so the goat will know where to take you, Are you Dutch or are you an Atheist ? or a Dutch Atheist or an
Atheist Dutch? Depending on your answer you could end up having to share a room with Shemp.

Hello:
This is my first post, for several years I have been lurking around these pages.Last year I decided to join. Now I wish to make a comment on the Religion and Philosophy forum about one of the William Lane Craig threads. This post can be my introduction.
I am male, 64 years, a citizen of Mexico, a pediatrician, de facto atheist, politically left center (In my country and in most of the world. In the USA it would be extreme left), skeptic.
English is not my language. It has been over 40 years since I had to write it regularly. I would appreciate it if any spelling and syntax mistakes were pointed out GENTLY. Thanks.

Hi yomero,
Welcome, and stop worrying about the quality of your English, it already looks much better than that of some of our native English speakers.
It was a very good idea of you to stop lurking, come out of the shadows and introduce yourself. Nice to meet you.
Pediatrician? Do you like minced Homeopath? It is Rolfe's specialty, and it is usually a treat to follow the threads where she operates. Just follow the trail of water drops to Medicine.

Don't worry about it to much. A member here got invaded by a hoard of hamsters, so each new member gets to eat a hamster either in a roll or grilled with a salad until the supply is exhausted.

Sorry Tory, I probably misled you with a serious first paragraph: that is rather frowned on in here and I only did it cos the regular hosts weren't looking: pretend I never said anything and maybe they will turn a blind eye: looking good so far :)
I have read a fair bit about mind control type things and at present my interest is in exploring its limits of application in various settings: but we will no doubt get to that in a thread sometime :)

Hello, just got accepted.
My journey here was a strange one. It started with the official Facebook page of Americans United for Separation of Church and State (a lobby I've supported for years), went through a website on America's secular origins, to "The Age of Enlightenment" by Thomas Paine (you know, the guy that wrote "Common Sense"), and to some "lists" guy that makes bizarre top 10 lists (most irrelevant to my interests, but interesting, nonetheless), one of which were top 10 psychic debunkings all of which were videos of James Randi... and then to other Youtube videos of the same man. I applied for the forum, and the rest of my day has been spent rebuking fellow agnostics for being as intolerant as the Christians they attacked on the AU facebook page. (Exactly how can someone who professes to follow NO religion get as defensive and intolerant as those who hold illogical beliefs? I'll never understand it... makes no sense to me).
Anyway, that's been my day. I look forward to getting to know the place.

You should be getting the same thing in Firefox by right-clicking the underlined word. If you're not then you may not have a dictionary loaded. Firefox usually installs with a dictionary by default, but that may be U.S.-centric. I say this because I had a similar conversation with an on-line Kiwi friend who subsequently discovered that his Firefox installation had not included one, and after we figured that out he had to decide between the Oz English and Brit English version since they didn't have one for Kiwis.
(I still haven't quite figured out why the Brit dictionary is bigger than the Aussie one.)
I don't care for the extra clutter of a Google bar, but that's just me. I have installed a dictionary.com plug-in which adds the option of opening a new tab into their entry for any word I highlight. That's become kind of handy.

I'm looking forward to filling in a few blanks although Sylvia's "spirit guide Francine" seems to be pretty accurate and obviously close or was very close to Sylvia/Chris.

I generally use my word processor to compose and check my posts, then just paste them. Eliminates the possibility of losing something you have been working on (a complaint I often hear from others). Still I’d recommend cleaning up your hard drive, upgrading to bigger one or just put in some additional storage. An external hard drive is a good idea for files you don’t use that often and also lets you back up your data.
Welcome to all new members.

I'm currently attempting to better myself at the tender age of almost 30 by finally finishing my bachelor's degree in Anthropology and LGBT studies. I'm an Anglophile, and I dig forensic science and other assorted morbid topics. I hope to learn a lot from all you groovy people.
I started college at age 34. Good luck. :)

Are you prejudice ? Unfortunately not everyone here can be classified as Human.
And I'm pretty sure only a small handful of us were ever classified as groovy, but then again, maybe JillianBean was addressing that to us. If so, then Welcome, Jillian. We hardly have any morbid posters (nor Texans) at all on the forums.

The lack of Texans doesn't surprise me, which is unfortunate. This must be a truly groovy place if non-humans are among the inhabitants.

Hi everyone!
My name is Shana, I'm 28, and, like new member Jilian, I have a background in anthropology, it's what I got my BA in, and I've done some work in anthropology, mostly volunteer and most abroad, but some in the U.S.; but right now I work as a financial counselor at the non profit Dana Farber Cancer Institute. I am also working on a master's degree in both anthropology and biology. I am married to a soldier in the US Army who is an Iraqi vet. My (academic) interests are primarily anthropology (with a focus on medical and physical anthropology), evolutionary biology, and history (particularly the history of science, medicine, and theology).
I just came upon this wonderful website recently, though I have been visiting other skeptic blogs for some time. This is the first one I actually signed up for.

Hello--not sure if I'm doing this right, but here goes. Since I'm an agnostic and I think that means I'm a skeptic about the big stuff, I'm also a little skeptical about the Truth of this little question: is this really where I introduce myself? I haven't had a good on-line discussion since my book-discussion group folded some time ago.
So bottom line, my on-line discussion skills may be rusty. Anyway, here goes. I was very attracted initially to the debate here on Rosemary Altea (I think that's a pretty old one, though). My dad's an atheist, a scientist well-respected and highly published in his field (biochemistry). I always thought his views made more sense than anyone's except my mom's, who loved the "mystery" and wasn't really atheistic in the literal sense, I guess. I have always very close to her.
A few years ago I started losing my mom to dementia (she's now in an Alzheimer's Care facility) and found myself really reaching for something "out there" as in, some sort of evidence that mom's wonderful, creative, loving "soul" and energy might prevail indefinitely somehow. Somewhere.
Years ago, we'd read Altea's first book together along with an interview with her in a highly respected literary journal. (My mom's love of books, art and plays were a huge influence on me; I'm an English teacher who loves her job) Anyway, Altea seemed sincere, somehow "for real" I guess, to us both in some subtle (but not quite literal)way I'd never experienced, especially with one of my parents.
. More recently, when I knew I was really losing Mom, I went onto Altea's website and found it just . . .disappointingly but perhaps not surprisingly, superficial and not for me. I knew it was all wishful thinking on my part, really. This is I'm sure not a unique story.
Anyway, I love the art of rhetoric and debate, and I appreciate the fact that this site exists. To be truly honest though, I think my misguided quest for something "spiritual" in the form of psychics, some heaven-like place my loved ones might sort of "be" after death and whatnot is now re-directed toward honest, thinking people who want to exchange ideas about the Mystery. Whether it's a purely scientific one or otherwise. Oh, and I'm not interested in the million dollars. Although I wouldn't turn it down if someone just thought I could use it and had it to give away. It's nice to be here. I think. Uh-oh, just realized this isn't exactly a quick reply. . .still learning!!!

Thanks for the save Colonel!
<ponders his error for a while>
Hmmm I think I know what I did wrong, maybe.....Nope. maybe this mystery had better be left alone.
<looks at the rubble and sighs>
Colonel, did you notice that my lab was underneath the house filled with civilians?

Yup, But I am old school ,I believe all is fair in war .unfortunately sometimes civilians get killed. It could have been worse I could have taken out the whole block, but I wanted to show that I could make a precision strike. Besides ,my intel told me at the time of the strike no civilians were at home, but there were some dead Hamsters in the rubble. :)

Hi, I'm new here (mainly due to TAM 8 planning).
I gre up fundie, went to a christian college (Cedarville), which subsequently turned me away from god. I was agnostic since mid-college experience, and I'd consider myself a full-fledged atheist since 2004 or so...

Hi postymcposterton (intriguing name, by the way)
:welcome2. This is the best place to recover from fundieism, as some former theists will acknowledge. As a new atheist, I recommend blowing off steam in any of the Religion threads. There are always veteran prosytelists (sp?) to hone your debunking skills.
But first help yourself to some yummy grilled hamsters, we can't have you go out debating on an empty stomach, can we now?

Howdy folks,
My name is Patrick.
I was born and raised in South Carolina, lived in Paris, France for 3 years and currently reside in Abilene, Texas with my fiancee and our two cats.
I was raised baptist/christian but left that when I went to college and have been skeptical of religions and many other things most of my life.
I would like to work on my critical thinking skills while here and hope to engage many of you in some enlightening discussions.

Hello thar!
The name's Michaela (username "embie" = my initials "MB". Super creative, no?) and I'm a resident of Australialand.
I'm fairly new to the skeptic/critical thinking "movement", though I reckon I've been a critical thinker most of my life - which might just be one of the reasons I didn't really fit in at my very christian school. I played around with new-agey metaphysics stuff for a while with some friends over the last couple of years, but it never really made all that much sense to me.
I only really defined my position as an atheist and skeptic over the last couple of months (always knew it, never put it into words so to speak). Pretty much all my friends have a bad case of the woo, so it's been a rather isolated journey thus far.
Basically I'm here to learn, to sharpen my own critical thinking (and debate) skills, and to hopefully make a few friends in the process.
I'm also working on getting myself to TAM this year (both of them, Vegas and Australia!), it'll be a bit of a leap with airfares and all but I'm determined ;)

Hey,
I went to the index first before coming here, and got my ass kicked in crop circles (sheesh I find them interesting I didnt say I believe in aliens). Ive always liked Randi
and consider myself a very skeptical person but I also enjoy debating skeptics who seem too smug and self assured.:)
How do I reply to a post with the persons comment in that box at the top?
Thanks and see you around JREF

Welcome, Embie (unless you sign everything "Michaela" we'll soon forget that's your name, well, except for the sex-starved nerdish sycophants who've already noted same and sent out PMs and emails... "Hey, new skepchick. I call dibs!" No! Really! We are that pathetic.)
Yet another poster from Australiaville? I think withiin short we'll have the entire population of the continent on board, here. It sure seems that you can't move from one thread to another without tripping over one of you. (And don't let anyone know about the overwhelming and massive corruption of the Queensland police force. We're pretending you guys are all civilised and stuff, and cops just slightly shadier than those in Bangkok aren't helping the image, lemme tell ya!)

Lol, no worries on that, I am quite single after all ;) And I do dig the nerdy types, being a total nerd myself (*braces for a wave of "PICK ME PICK ME OH DEAR GOD PICK ME!" messages*)

Okay, maybe "sane" is pushing it a bit. But still, good to know. :D

Oh I forgot to come here to say hello! (I registered last week)
So here it is :
Hello all!
Profile:
My name is Nicolas. I'm a French-Canadian (from Quebec). I'm currently 21 and I'm still in University (studying maths at the "Université de Sherbrooke").
Interests:
I love talking about science (physics and maths are my favorite ones). I also love video games and board games a lot. I don't read much, but when I read, it must be sci-fi (e.g. Asimov, Star Wars, etc.) OR anticipation books or whatever you call them (e.g. 1984, Brave New World, etc.). I love any kind of music, especially prog rock, jazz, fusion jazz, experimental and classic.
Beliefs:
I'm a skeptical atheist (for 3 years now), but I never argue religion unless someone is cocky or annoying about his beliefs. As for other subjects, I love to argue. Note : I was raised catholic.
I try to be neutral to most of the debated subjects, but I love to argue against both sides, using the arguments of the opposite position. I don't know if there's a word for that kind of method, but it helps me a lot making my own opinion and learning more about the subject.
Randi:
I first heard about Randi when I was watching some Dawkins' video on Youtube and on the right panel (similar videos), I randomly clicked on "James Randi on James Hydrick" (or whatever the name is) and I was amazed by this video, so I decided to watch every single video about Randi investigating supernatural claims. Then I watched every other video he was in. Then, after a year, I decided to join his forums and here I am.

I just thought some of you newbs ought to see what a well prepared skeptic/sceptic looks like. This is Ol' Paint, the snorkeling skeptic of ponytude, and he's getting tired of the goat stealing all the carrots, so is demanding equal time.
(Truth be known - I just haven't posted this weird pic in a while and wanted to share it with the new squirrels for the stewpot.)

Welcome to all the new folks!
It's been a while since I visited this thread, and while I see a lot of talk about goats, and cookies, and library books, I see very little SkinnyGod praising.
Let's just say I'm disappointed in y'all.

nburo, I think this might be refered to as "playing the Devil's advocate".
