Allow me to introduce myself.
I'm only "The Godfather" because I couldn't think of anything else. Drew a complete blank. If names can be changed, I'd like to, this one is dumb.
I am looking forward to convincing you all that psi powers are real and Uri Geller is a genius of great magnitude. :p

Welcome God father AKA what ever . Yes, once you decide on what you want to be called, just ask the powers to be and they will sometimes grant your wish. It really deends how much you are willing to bribe them. In the mean time have a glass of fresh goats milk, a grayman cookie and a famous MINTIE . Pat the goat on the head when you see it .

I guess I should have started here, but oh well. Hello everyone, I found this forum after seeing it mentioned quite a few times in researching various conspiracy theories regarding 9/11. A hunger for knowledge regarding the events of that day, and a need for personal understanding are being satisfied as I read through those threads; I must say it is an honor to be here. Hope you don't mind if I stick around awhile, and if I step out of line, feel free to rough me up, I welcome the learning experience.
Hi djlunacee,
Your post got tangled up with others, so nobody welcomed you. My sincere apologies, so: :welcome2 to you.
The honour is ours, as well. Please hang up your coat, take your shoes/flipflops/boots off, make yourself at home. I hope someone offered you a fresh glass of goats milk, and did the chef ask you how you like your complimentary hamster?
I don't approve of roughing up anyone, unless you troll for it and then I say 'go for it'. So, enjoy, pull up a thread of your liking, and start contributing to our little niche of rationality in a wood of woo.

Welcome, and of course you can change your name.
If you still draw a complete blank you can always use the name of your worst enemy and tell people that you are a wanted felon.
Or just use wantedfelon , I don't think that has been taken, I don't know why.

Hi. Iam Dave a 31 year old British member of the Royal Air Force as a techie fixing aircraft.
From this you can see that I work in logic and science and rational thinking. I am an atheist and non believer in all matters of "special" abilities, especially the ones that seem to involve money! Iam here through my sheer bewilderment, frustration and amazement (no words strong enough) of some of the claims and posts I have read regarding some peoples beliefs and claims. I firmly believe self delusion, mental illness, obsessive attention seekers and habitual liars make up the most of what I read to be untrue.
That said, I am in awe of the physics of the universe and through science believe that there are many amazing natural things that are beyond human comprehension that occur. Non of which are down to any "god" btw!
I shall try to contribute my opinions here and try my hardest not to be to sarcastic which is hard from a UK upbringing and living in a military environment which usually involves lots of p*ss taking!!

Hello to all, first time ever posting anything on the internet. My wife has been a participant in the JREF for some time now. Last year my family received a scholarship to attend TAM7. I got to go but was unable to attend any of the events. Due to the kindness of people that I had never met, my family got to have a much deserved vacation. I personally was skeptical of the kindness of these unmet strangers, that would be willing to put up their own money so that my family could attend TAM7. Although the only event that I attended was the talent show, because of my wife's participation, I still had the opportunity to meet many others between the events. I particularly remember having breakfast in the Garden Buffet with iiwo and his Subaru having been broke down at the time. I didn't know what to expect of the strangers from the internet that my wife had befriended, but at that moment realized that my skepticism of all the time she had "wasted" talking to people that I thought we would never meet was unwarranted. I spent the majority of my time sitting in the hotel room, this year I plan to do otherwise. Whether or not we are able to get grants for this years' TAM we will figure out a way to attend. I look forward to making new acquaintances as well as meeting old friends, that without their help, we never would have had the opportunity to attend. I will not name the people responsible for that, as I found them to be extremely humble and not concerned with receiving credit for their contributions. There is one person that I will leave unnamed that not only made it financially possible for us to attend, but also greeted us at the airport when we arrived and said good-bye to us when we left. To him, especially, thank-you from the bottom of my heart.

Hello,
I've been lurking around here for a few months now, so I figured I'd finally say hello and whatnot. I'm currently employed as a counselor and hoping to pursue a PhD in psychology with a focus on clinical interventions and applied neuroscience. Beyond that, I enjoy solving puzzles, picking locks, and photographing historic buildings. I have a pathological love of empirical research, and take an almost obscene pleasure in debunking and debating irrational beliefs and statements.
That said, I'm relatively new to the 'organized' skeptical community. I'm usually that guy who you get casually introduced to who feels the need to argue with you when you say something like "I won't get a flu shot because that will give me the flu!". While that doesn't get me invited back to a lot of dinner parties, I'm hoping that will be received slightly more kindly here!

Mmmm, Pie! (Old standard line 'round here, but with your particular pie, it's even more meaningful than it's original use.) And I'm pretty sure I know who you're referring to re the airport, and I concur, even having never met the man, that I've been tempted to turn to God just so I can have him canonized as the first skeptics' saint.

Me, being the analytical person that I am, how is it that from my original post, that you obviously knew of whom I was speaking? Especially since you said that you have never met him. How did you know who I was talking about?
I personally never met him before last July, and he continues to offer my family assistance that I am reluctant to accept.
My family has experienced losses and hardships for the last five years that I still can't come to comprehend. My wife "lost" herself in the internet, and therefore discovered the JREF community. I still don't understand why people that we have no connection to, other than an internet forum, would be so interested in the lives of the people in my life. I am extremely thankful for what the JREF has done for my wife.
Three days from today is the anniversary of me having to watch my son drown. It is also the anniversary of my faith in anything or anyone drowning. Whenever anyone reads one of my posts, please understand, I don't mean to offend. I am bitter and I still feel sorry for myself because of my loss. I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me. I will work through it on my own. Many people have to endure losses far greater than what I have had to learn to live with.
Once in a while, when you just don't think that you can take anymore, someone comes along and for an unknown reason, touches your life in a way that, they may never know, they are the one that makes you believe in the kindness of the human heart!!

Even through such an astoundingly impersonal connective device as a computer and the internet. That one of the very technological devices that tends to separate us by distance can also bring us closer together in the one aspect we all share, our humanity.

We whish you both all our best. It had often been my habit, when down or depressed, to seek out others to tell my troubles to or hear and perhaps help them with theirs. The internet to me was just a convenient research tool and I had never even considered remotest possibility engaging in some discussion forum, until I found this one. First let me say welcome Allecher , Thie welcome thread is kind of where you get initiated and Hazed all in one . So if you are ready here we go . First have a glass of fresh goats milk and a Grayman Oatmeal cookie next you may take a MINTIE out of the MINTIE bowl, next pick out a hamster(you may take two) and give it/them to our chef and tell him how you want it/them cooked.
Next return any and all over due library books or the library lady will be after you ,lastly bow toward Kent Washington makers of the

Lol thanks! No I 'came out' to my parents about a yr ago. And even though they are ultra catholic they think it's a good thing bc they think eventually I will come back to the church. I dont know how long it'll take before they figure out it's not likely. The biggest challenge is convincing them I feel soooo much more 'complete'/ 'fulfilled' without religion than I ever did with religion (they really don't understand how that's possible) and that atheism is just a lack of belief in something it has nothing to do with what I do believe or the morals I have (other than beiang able to base them on some sort of reason rather than a god). Once I get those ideas through to them I think they might understand it's more than a fad they claim they went through. I just think the morallity part might be the hardest to explain since when I got married as a catholic to an atheist they think it's her fault I'm atheist and since she turned out to lack much in morals they keep saying I'm going to end up like her!! I just some how have to convince them that my atheism didn't come from her 'convincing' me.

Ouch, it must hurt to find that they more or less think atheism comes with less morals. I know a lot of atheists who have better moral fiber in them than a lot of christians I can think of (and don't want to know). I hope you will find your niche in here, there are lots of great people in here, both atheists and theists, and we get along great, most of the time.
I really hope your parents will realise that being a good person just because you know that is a good thing and not because an invisible Sky Daddy wants you to, is the moral thing to do. Again, welcome, and great to meet you.

Yea, I used to be the theist in the forum. I was trying to understand how people could NOT believe in god...and then started reading their replies. Took me a good while to start understanding their posts.
I am hoping that they will see that I am still the moral person I was before the only difference being age.

My name is Eirikur Granneman, long time listener first time caller. Newly registered, so I could post in the TAM8 Thread, since I'm finally going this year! Yay!
I discovered Randi and TAM a few years back, when I for some reason started listening to The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe. This is also the time I discovered that there were lots of people thinking like I did, and that I was in fact a skeptic.
I'm from Norway, half Icelandic, I have a a Darwin fish tattooed on my forearm and I'm a skeptic and an atheist. So I'm looking forward to taking a bigger part in the great community over here.

Just thinking of this old fella hunched over a keyboard pressing his index finger down on each separate letter.
Last I checked, I type 70 wpm  . I did around 5 different tests and the average turned out to be 70.

Hello!
I've been around for a little while on JRE just observing and trying to follow a few discussions on this forum.
It's been only recently since I've actually got knocked of my shiny hovering cloud of ignorance that I was, lightly, brought up on and found quite comfortable during my teen years.
Homeopathy was a well accepted "much more effective and less toxic" medicinal approach for various things. It was especially my mother that was quite active in this area and spread the beauty of the mysterious cloud titled "stuff science will never be able to prove" which was all that's euphorious.
My dad was a skeptic, but kept this to himself most of the time, fearing to start an argument.
Like my dad, I always had a feel for chemistry and physics which somehow lead me to studying Molecular Biology. Here, it was the introduction to the general scientific approach/mentality that caught my interest. My mom didn't quite like how things turned out for me and still tries to convice me to "keep an open mind".
We can still get along just fine though...
All Im here for is merely catching up, as I still hesitate to judge new woo-ish methods for being utterly placebo-based. I have my own reasons for that, from personal experiences. I'd like to go into that one a bit more but I'd rather just keep this intro brief.

Hey Roma how have you been?
Hi Colonel,
things are wet and dirty here,
oh let me explain that pleeeease :p
My yard is covered in fresh top soil and grass seed,
after I put the top soil down I always walk all over it when I sprinkle the seed and I don't want to get my shoes dirty so I do it with bare feet,
then I filled 12 garden pots with soil and poked in several different kinds of lovely flower seeds, so now my hands are completely covered in dirt.
Gardening gloves? Oh I have heard of them but it doesn't feel the same. ;)
Normally Winnipeg is still covered in snow at this time of year but this year it is very warm and I am taking the risk of planting seeds, otherwise I usually just wait until June and plant seedlings. As long as it stays this warm my yard should look great in a couple of months :)
(think warm thoughts)

Well hello JREF forum. I'm hailing from Jackson, Mississippi where I hamster herd a local gaggle of skeptics. I got interested in the whole idea because of the skeptics guide to the universe podcast - which was the first hint in years I had that other people in the world actually liked listening to Carl Sagan, and didn't just pretend to so that I would stop bugging them about it.
I'll have my hamster burned crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and if you give me goats milk I will be compelled to make cheese from it. My browser does not accept cookies and any mint will be re-filled under "julep, mint"
Seriously, I am not.
Jackson Skeptical Society: Our motto is "unbuckling the bible belt." Okay, well, maybe I just made that up off the top of my head.

I was baffled when I first learned about osmosis -when i was about 14 or 15, during biology class- and spent the better part of a year entertaining fairly mystical explanations for why solutions of different concentrations would behave that way when separated by a semi-permeable membrane. When I finally got a good explanation (has to do with the 2nd law of thermodynamics) I remember feeling a great relief, and I promised myself that I would never waste my time on magical thinking again.
And that is the reason why I come to read this forum. I might even start posting now that I broke my silence.

I'm new, but unlike some people on here I was never a believer in anything that I couldn't see. I was born so skeptical that I never even developed object permanence. Parties are awkward because sometimes I attack people when they turn around because I think that they are strangers who snuck into my house, but on the other hand peek-a-boo is still really fun.
I don't know what else to say. I'm a hypnotist (I don't believe in that either but since it works so well I use it) and I played the clarinet in grade 7. I wrote a book on learning how to give professional-seeming tarot readings with only a small amount of memorization. If you're nice I'll send you the cliff's notes, saving you even more time. I don't know what else to say besides that I'm upset that they have "celibate passions" and "nerd passions" and "large passions" and "scientology passions" dating sites but not a "polygamist passion" one. Oh, "hello", I guess. It will be a pleasure to meet those of you that I meet. I'm excited for all the discussion that I will partake in on this site.

Hey there, I've already made myself known in the science forum. I came to JREF out of curiosity, I've heard and liked a lot of what James Randi has said about various kook ideas and have long thought it applied to climate deniers, who I have a lot of experience arguing with in various internet forums and blogs, and wondered what the skeptic community actually thinks in that regard. So far I've been pleasantly surprised to find the weight of opinion firmly on the side of science, though mildly dismayed and bewildered that there are a few rusted on deniers flying the flag here. Oh well, I guess it wouldn't be much fun if there weren't the odd insane person to argue with.
So, hai!
P.S. Can anyone briefly explain the 'nominate' function?
Hokulele
27th April 2010, 02:56 AM
The "Nominate" button will copy the post in question to a particular thread in Community.
http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?postid=2821875#post2821875
From this thread, a poor, overworked, underappreciated forum member will cull what she thinks are the posts that represent the best use of language, once a month, and post a poll where other forum members can vote for their favorite. The details are explained in that thread.
:)
ETA: I just realized that the Nominations thread is a bit weird this month, due to April Fool's and all. Ah well, it probably demonstrates the strangeness that is the JREF forum better than any welcome thread ever could.

Hi there - just saw this thread after posting a few times already. My name is Dan, I am a nurse and I'm not good at thinking of clever screennames!
Been lurking for a year or so, particularly interested in the psychology of the 9/11 people. Came into skepticism through many means, not the least of whom was James Randi. I learned what I could about him, read some of his books and have enriched myself greatly.
The critical thinking skills I've learned from this website have been invaluable in my work and education, and I only wish I had learned those skills sooner. I have to admit, I always thought I was a critical thinker, but after learning about Randi and his views and others like him, I realize that I was going through the motions more than anything - I wasn't really challenging my beliefs at all.
Glad to be here.

Ehm, I seem to have missed this thread when I signed up. And again, when I started posting about a year later...
Anyway. Hello all. My (real) name's Michael, I'm German, actually still live in Germany, and am comparatively new to all this skeptical stuff. I'm one of those people who only found this community through podcasts. My own activities so far have been limited to being a member of the German GWUP, visiting TAM London and participating in online discussions when I should be working.
In Real Life(tm) I work at a university, where I solve other people's problems at an institute for chemical technology.
I do not have a Vampire Bat Monster Zombie Dog. I am owned by a cat, though, but she does not like me to publish her picture on the interwebs.

Helllo, it's Norm, found this spot with a place to chat about fixing the oil spill. Now I can't find that topic but here I am at a peculiar chatty site about food which is my 155 to 300 pound nemesis. I used to say the fat keeps me healthy till my navel hurt and i have a cold that won't quit. Here is the food my teen, his friends and i all like. butter a good nonstick pan well. heat wipe a flour tortilla on both sides in it set aside. wipe another on both sides leave in hot pan add string or shredded mozzarrella add sharp cheddar place other tortilla on top cover with glass cover wait to brown slightly don't get distracted (get a phone call, turn off flame, Hot pan will cook it fine) flip quesadilla. if last one turn off flame now. purist teen son will not tolerate meat in quesadilla. adventurrers like me would fry meat in the pan and use that oil to coat tortilla. Simple , like my oil spill fix if i ever find that title again. oh, Ive officiated 7.000 weddings, taken 175,000 wedding fotos, built a 500 page postmodern Christian and political commentary websiite and written the world's most depressing novel, Ameriacan King Protophorous. Hi everybody. I think I goofed and gave myself a dumb username instead of a cool one like some of you have, but oh well. I'm new here, and to forums in general. The JREF forums seem like a neat place for exploring philosophy and human psychology, and engaging in healthy constructive argument.
I don't follow any religion, though I once was christian, then agnostic. Now I try to keep an open mind.
I'm not affiliated with any CT groups, but I'm fascinated by reading about different conspiracy theories. I used to be very impressionable, and overly paranoid about Illuminati, aliens, fluoride and everything else. Now I'm older, calmer, I can consider concepts rationally and without freaking out one way or the other.
I occasionally experiment with different belief systems, attempting to see the world in unconventional ways to see if there are grains of truth unobservable from the outside. I hope you'll forgive me if I happen to be playing with a system that seems ridiculous at some time when we interact in the future. I promise to be civil, respectful, honest, and I'll do my best to keep any wackiness out of places it doesn't belong.
I have to admit, I'm rather intimidated by this community based on what I've read about you. As I said, I study conspiracy theories, and while doing so I've encountered people labeled "JREFers" who seemed devoted to verbally abusing CTists of any sort. I'm hoping that isn't representative of the community on the whole.
Thank you all for being here, participating in this community, working to expand minds. I hope that I can contribute positively to your big ol' skeptical family.
BTW, I'm a vegetarian (for health reasons - I'm not a snob or anything), so I'm afraid I can't accept any goat or hamster. I'll gladly accept cookies, though.

Been trying to figure out what's been going on around here since 1983. Still a work in progress. Never imagined I would end up in the space I am now, but they've finally worn me down into submitting to the idea that aliens are indeed messing with our heads. I find Hawking's vision that they're 'coming to get us' in spaceships, a strangely classical idea for someone so quantum mechanically minded. I am looking into means by which the universe's intelligent communities might talk to each other beyond merely sending photons to each other - how quaintly fin-de-siecle that idea was! I'm prepared to believe that given the world has been around for about 13.7 thousand million years, there is probably at least one civilization out there which has risen above the mindless self-destructive consumption that characterises human life on earth. At some stage in their evolution, 'intelligent' civilizations either destroy their home (another shocking Hawking prediction), or they get their excreta together. Everyone knows the deal – the gravitationally bound resources of the earth can be indefinitely reconfigured by inorganic intelligence, creating order out of chaos, up to a distant limit imposed by our capacity to capture the energy flowing from a hot place, the sun, to a cool place, the earth. Smart aliens don’t need to travel to another planet, because they don’t ever 'use up' their resources. Every alien kid knows that when stuff gets worn out or broken or dirty, you simply toss it down the chute of the universal solar powered recycler, and out comes shiny a replacement – for free. What a shame we don’t look like we're ever going to realize that.
Rowan Grigg

Hi there,
basically, my system now consists in an alien conspiracy, with each of us being prompted to do stuff, and each of us responding either obliviously, or by freaking out, or like you by chilling out, sitting back, and enjoying the show.
Nice to meet you, mwsmith
cheers,
Rowan:)

Hullo, 'nother newbie here.
You can call me Shadow, Sot, "Hey You, smelly kid!", or some derivative thereof (Sot you, Smelly Shadow!).
A bit about myself.
I grew up blue collar, and I've done a few odd jobs over the years.
Currently I work tech support, a good job if you don't like people.
As far as it goes, I'm a incredible novice, and approach all things as if I'd never done them before, because I usually don't remember doing them the first time.
I've spent a lot of time reading books on ancient cultures and history, as well as basis about some of the other sciences, and have learned enough to know I know very little.
My other hobby is martial arts, I've spent a lot of time learning how to get beat up, and I think I've gotten pretty good at it.
The getting beat up, that is. I'll be getting my black belt in it soon.
On top of everything else, I have the mixed blessing and curse of being 21.
Good to be here!

Very good then.... That took far too long.
My name is JammerML. I am a musician, and Sys Admin amongst other myriad things.
I am also an agnostic/deist ever so leaning toward atheism, but in either camp, certainly a skeptic. You may from time to time hear me say things that sound paganistic....that's mainly to annoy the fundamentalists.
I have 4 children. 3 girls one boy. I, in part, decided it was ok to have many children because I read an article about how fundamentalist families could end up taking over in the next few generations due to their tendency to have large families. It was grueling work :D, but I did my part.
My wife is more or less a skeptic as well, and the oldest of my children at 7 has an uncontrollable "snurl" when she finds out that someone believes in sky daddy, yet has a firm belief in Santa Claus. I encourage this because it irritates the fundamentalists I grew up around. You know, keeping the Christ in Christmas and all.
I lived in rural KY for a long period. That was hell to grow up in, yet I feel a strong attachment to the abundance of natural beauty and folk culture from there, and continue to shun the other idiocies. My time there only served to confirm my thoughts on the church culture, and willful ignorance often exhibited by them. I was one to embrace knowledge and thought, and promptly realized I was better off somewhere else.
I suppose I have thank Mr. Geo Hrab, and a friend of mine for bringing me here.....They will likely never be forgiven for this.

Hail,
I have come here to kick ass and chew bubblegum...and I'm all out of kick ass, well bubblegum too.
By good ole chance, I do have something for any who dare endure it. I was hunting down an article on Belief's site and well, look below:
This is over on Belief dot Net
How God Overcame My Fear
Author Beth Moore describes how God taught her to defeat fear, worry, and insecurity.
A couple of years ago God put me through a peculiar exercise that caused a total earthquake in my long-held perception of trust. I'd like to replay it to you in the form of a dialogue because when it occurred, it was as if God spoke every word concretely and audibly to me.
God saw me in inner turmoil (again) about a relentless relational challenge, and while I was wrestling before Him in prayer, my stomach twisted like a wrung-out wet rag, He interrupted. .................
It's probably more than I'm rather tired, but that story... for some reason hearing such free and matter of factly "GOD SPEAKS TO ME." Creeps me out.
I must say, if a voice was talking to me - I would HOPE people would commit me or send me to get med help.
P.S. I heard a voice that was not my own, although I had some rather serious weeks of no seep for 2-3 days at a time and only my second week of using a mood stabilizer called Depakote.
I was at work, alone and some male voice asked me a question (wish I could remember what it was) in a calm average deep voice. I turned to the right and answered by actually speaking speaking.
The following morning I did a short visit with the doc and it seems if I hear a voice, it wasn't god. It was from too much lack of sleep and a side effect of the acclimation to the Rx lists possible aud hallucinations (very low chance).
There was a reason for mentioning this.
...
Oh yea, that was amazing. Although it was very short lived, there was not one way I could know it was just in my head, other than turning to see no one there.
My goodness, I can't imagine myself not visiting the doc IMMEDIATELY or very soon if I fcking hear voices.
Oh well.
At least we have Randi to keep us safe.

When I was a kid I was fascinated with the paranormal and devoured every library book I could find. Ghosts! UFOs! Aliens and monsters.
By twelve or thirteen I began to grow skeptical. I realized that a lot of the wild stuff reported as truth was, in fact
*stories that couldn't be substantiated
*misinterpretation of natural events and phenomena
*exaggerated and embellished versions of otherwise explicable events
*Pranks, scams, and hoaxes.
It wasn't disappointing. If anything it made the "supernatural" more fun because I still got to enjoy a good yarn, and then I had the fun of trying to figure out what was really going on.

Hello Namowal and welcome to the JREF forums! Nowadays I usually tell something similar when asked about woo:
"I used to believe in ghosts, flying saucers and Nessie. Then I grew up." :)
The last piece of woo I believed was the JFK conspiracy. I quickly knew that it was not true, after learning, via the 9/11 conspiracies, how conspiracies work and how they are constructed.

Having a father who believes in all that doesn't help either. He had stacks of semi-populair science magazines, that indeed dealt with science, but also with ghost, UFO's and the like. He also had books by Von Daniken, Adamski, books about JFK, all sort of nonsense. All this stuff is really exciting when you are a young kid, starting to learn about the world.

I'm an ex-homeopathy/alt-med 'believer' who found holding one too many nonsensical and contradictory ideas caused a breakdown in denial mechanisms and critical thinking finally began. Thankfully, this occurred as I started medical school. Both my parents, especially my mother, were heavily into New Age woo-ness, and mother practiced 'magick' - with a k, as opposed to some other magic, I assume. She also had all sorts of books by and about Eileen Garrett, Ruth Montgomery, Arthur Ford - and a few by Annie Besant. So, I had a quite a few nonsensical ideas to overcome, with the help of this and other sites.
