Hi, my name is Frederic and I'm self-delusional troll with a god complex.
Thank you for your time.
Well, I was going to refer you to Galileo, but know that you've already had the pleasure. We have a couple of other self-absorbed delusional trolls, though. You guys could form a club, maybe? Oh, you just said self-delusional. Hmmm? Have to see if we have some merely self-delusional trolls with god complex(es) around.
Try Mr. Skinny. He's the Forum God. Then there's always Belz? Marduk? Akhenaten?
Welcome - as you can see, you're in, if not "good", then at least similar, company.

Hi all, I joined since I noticed all the cool kids  hang around here.
I'm a computational physicist (with Ph.D. from 2007), a long-time skeptic and an out-spoken atheist struggling my way through raising a free-thinking daughter (she's three by now). We are now (again) located in Finland after spending three years in Germany.
I'm looking forward to get to know everybody better.

Hullo. I'm new and thought I'd make my presence known. I was pointed in this direction by a friend, so, you know - blame him. I'm youngish and male-ish and a sceptic and, as you can tell by my spelling of sceptic, British. Mostly I'm here because I like debate - I like the idea of it and I like it in practise - and, well would you look at that? A whole bunch of people on the internet to argue with. What joy.

What is meant by " male-ish ? " You are either male or not! Do you posses hooters? If not you're a male and welcome to the forum whatever.
Have you any overdue library books that should be returned ASAP ? If so, expect to hear from Librarylady very soon.

Well, I at least can assure you amb that on the occasions when I, fortunately, happen to be in possession of some hooters, I’m still quite male. Hello from England!
Finally made my way here after... oh, seconds* of thinking about it.
I'm in my thirties and now trying to make up for a boring education and abject failure to get a clue early in my life.
I'm an atheist and have already been told today that I'm hollow inside (apparently God can fill the hole ) and going to burn in Hell. A good start and I've only just had breakfast.
I work with aerospace electronics on the nightshift.
I do have interests and will probably say what they are eventually... If they crop up and make me look interesting. :)

I've been a member of the BAUT forum now for a pinch over a year, and JREF gets mentioned over there from time to time, so I thought I'd come across and check it out. Seems the range of topics is a little wider here - should be interesting.
Quite a nice place you've got here. Yes, I'm an Australian, but don't let that count against me (I know you've already got something of an infestation going on here - maybe you should fumigate this place with Marmite, most the Aussie folk I know can't stand that stuff).
I look forward to digging around a bit more throughout the site.
Hope everybody's having a splendid day or night, wherever you are.

They are cute. Unfortunately, here they are classed as vermin. As I have posted elsewhere, nature is extremely cruel. Just about every creature on this planet is prey for another creature. Because of this, only less than 1% of creatures who have ever lived on this planet are not extinct. That includes us.

They are cute We have a rabies problem here with them and skunks .Just about a week ago a young girl was playing in her back yard and was attacked by a rabid fox and her father was also bitten before he was able to kill it. The fox was sent to the state for testing and it tested positve for rabies. Now this family is taking a series of painful shots

Good afternoon, everyone!
I have to admit I've been silently (read: non-registered) trolling these forums for a bit, and finally figured I spent enough time reading through threads that I should probably.. ya know.. make an account ... and stuff :P
Anyway, my (nick)name is Riz and here I am to have a look around and butt my way into your forum... woo! I'm not sure how many Canadians are around in here, but I'm a firm believer that any place can always use additional Canadians, so I'm doing my part by adding to the Canadian population whatever it may currently be ;)
I'm an East-Coast-raised gal living on the West Coast. I have a very simple and boring job that will pale in comparison to absolutely anything the rest of you are doing, therefor I pretty much never mention it out of sheer embarrassment for having to say "Oh yeah, this is all I do for a living... *crickets*"
I am a former-Christian (who prior to that was a former-Pagan.. who prior to that was raised by two Agnostic parents... which means I basically was raised "right" and managed to screw it up myself... go me *sarcastic pom-poms) who is now an anti-theist hardline Atheist. I'm happily married to a former-Christian now-Agnostic. We have a happy little child-free life in the city of New Westminster, not too far outside of Vancouver. We just celebrated our 2-year marriage / 3-years-together anniversary on August 4th.
I blog my boring thoughts when I feel I have something worth saying.. which is anywhere between "constantly" and "never". Actually beyond my Atheist-based Wordpress where less posts may travel, I have a private livejournal where I put all the juicy details of day to day life.. and by juicy, I mean dull. (I really know how to talk myself up...)
Anyway, my husband and I are considering a nice little vacation down south (anything is "South" when you live in Canada.. unless you live in Vancouver, and then most of Canada is pretty much North.. meh, but we're talking the US here of course) next summer with a detour to TAM 9. It is far from written in stone but we'd certainly like to experience it at some point in time. We weren't sure if it was going to be TAM 9 or 10.. I'm hoping for 9. But we've been saying we need to get passports for two years now and so far we've basically produced no effort toward that at all. (Damn procrastination... I'd hate you so much if I wasn't putting it off til tomorrow.)
My username is beyond boring, and I apologize, but my mind drew blank at the registration area ... shoot. Oh well...
I'm really no one special but I'm looking forward to being involved in a forum-community like this one. I haven't really found a forum community I've been able to absorb comfortably since I left religion, and I have to admit I'm still on the lookout. I find most skeptic communities to be trying at times, simply because I find it odd to have become an atheist only to join atheist communities and talk about nothing but religion... where do we talk about the weather? And how 'bout them... uhh.. oh I don't know a thing about sports, who am I kidding. But you get what I mean.
What else.. oh, I suffer from an anxiety condition called Agoraphobia and also Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which combine into an evil super-power making my day to day life a challenge. I feel I do quite well under the circumstances though, and I've improved dramatically over where I was on both counts years ago.
Enough rambling though. Cheers to anyone who's actually read all this.. and to those who just skipped to the end ;)
<3

I guess it's time to do this then.
I'm from Norway and after failing to flunk various subjects I got to be a metallutgical engineer, currently working in Aibel, providing Big Oil™ with pipes and other stuff.
I've allways been a bit skeptical, never been religious - had a bout of childhood superstition, but after having read most of greek mythology and norse mythology by age 14 the dots connected by themselves as far as religions go...
When I'm not being a surly skeptic, I ski, dive, hunt go fishing and trekking in the mountains, drink beer, and misc other stuff.
A creaking bookshelf that is beginning to look like a collection of who's who in skepticicm and popularization of science is one of my dearest possessions.
I guess what interrests me most is the psychology of belief, how we screw up our own mind with biases as wel as what drives variation in predisposition for developing belief in the supernatural and the mechanisms by which such belief might manifest it self. The latter ties in with neurology and evolutionary psychology so I had to go buy more books, and so on and so on...
An other issue I try to address is how to handle encounters with woo-people in such a manner that a smidgeon of critical thought process might be induced.
It's hard work not to go into a fit at times, but hammering down on someone is just unproductive. But boy-oh-boy do I feel the urge at times, hehe :D

I also seem to have swallowed a pile of randomonium and often have trouble keeping tightly on topic, and this place seems a little more relaxed like that.
I spend most my time there in fun-n-games, because it's more funny and gamey there, and the angry, picky people don't spend so much time in there, so it's a more pleasant experience.

Oh, lawdy lawdy, but you have some learning to do. They angriness brigade goes into that area to sleep it off after they've sucked the blood out through the carotid of one thread or another. :jaw-dropp
Welcome, nevertheless. (I decompress in games and in the Arts/Media/Hollywood-Schmollywood areas, also.)
Oh and as to digressions... don't catch the mods in a bad mood. Thread drift is cool (otherwise I'd have been banned ages ago), but derailing is an actionable offense if you're apparently doing it repeatedly and with someone's perception of ill intent.

I'm not keen on derailing threads, otherwise I'd just go to another, more appropriate thread, but thread drift can be a little more difficult to control.
That said, I ought to just say thanks for the welcome and be done.

Hello. I don't usually use introduction threads, but this seems like a good place to start.
I was introduced to the JREF about 2 weeks ago and can not help myself with the information available to me. So when I used up all the blog posts from the main sites, I figured the next best place for information is the people who also share the same interest.
I hope to learn a lot here.

hello all. i hope i have posted this in the right place.
i'm an aging queer pagan hermit hippy living in the peace river valley in northern alberta, canada, off-grid, in the bush.
i live quite an isolated life, partly by choice and largely by geography.i'm something of a jaded romantic, but a dreamer, nonetheless.
i have been a druid all my life, since long before i knew what a druid was. since i was raised very catholic, having made a lifelong study of the occult and magick, i've also been a heretic since before i knew was a heretic was.
i enjoy spending time cruising on my groovy old dnepr motorcycle as it's as offbeat as i am.
i am a retired high school english teacher who has often been in trouble for siding with students against administration, so it probably wont come as a surprise that i am also an anarchist (or, more accurately, i'd call myself a bioregional anarcho-communist) and think that any form of government is an afront to personal freedom. i firmly invision the 'perfect' world as a network of bioregional autonomous zones.
reading is a passion of mine and i read omnivorously. i look forward to meeting new and interesting people here.

Nah.... Seriously mate. 13th constellation, visible from earth. Often overlooked, 'cos Earthlings can't get the horoscopes for it. Good thing is, Ophiucus kids can follow any daily horoscope they want - it's backwards compatible. Say if your Leo, and it forecasts cold drizzle, but it turns out lovely and sunny - you might feel let down at the end of the day, forever stuck with the expectations of the morning forecast. And the disappointment. But if your Ophiucus, you can pick the weather you'd have wanted, just before you turn in. And that's what you'd have got.
Where I'm from, only one constellation is visible so we all share the same sign, but different fates.

Due to ill health i've found myself with a lot of time and a laptop, i started out trying to learn about Bigfoot but to be honest i'm interested in more than just that, i know very little about most of the stuff here and i'm also new to the whole forum thing too!

Welcome to the best forum on the internet, Lynn-Ann. You can learn obscene amounts of just about anything you can think of here. You know you can count on me for the Bigfoot part. Native myths and traditions, the PGF, various Bigfoot organizations and researchers - you name it.
I have also written at length about Homo floresiensis and other related topics. No surprise that early human evolution is my thing. Feathered dinosaurs and avian dinosaur and nonavian dinosaur distinctions are something else cool you could check out. If you want to learn about health related stuff, check out the SMM&T section. If you want to have fun with humour and get some stupid jokes, there is always the Humour section. Community is where you can talk to other members pretty much about anything at all on your mind.
I won't pry about your illness, but I do wish you a speedy recovery and that you enjoy your learning time at the JREF. :)

Hey, welcome. You can join me in the "avoid the math and science geeks area" club.
Why?
>>> Because your percentages could not possibly work from everything I've been led to believe. I have no idea, but you'd probably have to go back about thirteen katrillion generations to come up with those percentages 60/15/25, unless....
I mean, if you count "close", you might conceivably be able to identify the nationality/origin of all 32 of your Great Great Great Grandparents - but
1. Knowing that there were precisely 19 Brazilians, 8 UKians, and 5 Italians all those years ago would be pretty amazing. I mean "great great great grandparents" makes you the sixth generation, and regardless how young you are, that puts their dates back in the early/mid 19th century, say 1815 to 1850. I'm going to guess that birth records aren't that accurate and neither are family trees.
2. Plus, 19/8/5 is not really 60/25/15 %. It's more like "nearly 60/25/nearly15" %.
Who us? Nerds? No. Why would you ask?

20th August 2010, 12:57 PM
So, this is my first post on the JREF forum.
I'm a longtime skeptic and atheist.
I was a bit precocious and told my parents at 6 that I didn't want to go to church anymore because I didn't believe in god. They, to their credit, said "OK" and that was the last time I set foot in a church for anything other than a wedding or funeral.
I'm a Software QA Director in Massachusetts and live in Woo Central, Salem MA.
I actually love the city and have interacted with any number of witches, wiccans, psychics, astrologers, new agers, etc etc over the years.
I've subscribed to Skeptic and Skeptical Inquirer on and off over the years and have been an avid listener to Skepticality for years as well as many other podcasts off and on. I particularly enjoy Monstertalk, American Freethought, Skeptic's Guide to the Universe, and Skeptoid.
I finally have decided to do more than just lurk and figured the JREF was a good place to actually join into the larger community.
I've also been doing a little bit of planning on a monthly podcast that is Salem specific. I was thinking along the lines of opening a friendly dialog with a local true believer each month on various topics. There are enough true believers in my city to go for the next century. Listening to Phil Plait's presentation at TAM8 and the most recent episode of Monstertalk has given me a bit more confidence that a non-confrontational approach to this might actually have a bigger audience.
I'd love to get some feedback from the community at large on this potential project and will post some details. I have reached out to a couple of the people that I would interview and they have been receptive to the idea (I have been very clear that this was from a skeptical, non-believer POV).

I think I've been a skeptic for about as long as I can remember, but I've recently started taking an interest in big-S Skepticism. I'm looking forward to my time here.
Must be something about the water from the Riviere Rideau. There are a whole bunch of people on this board from Ottawa. (I'm an honorary Bytownian, having survived the legendary winter of 1971 there during my first year in Canada.)
Welcome aboard. Make yourself comfy. There are a lot of Canadians here from coast to coast. They occasionally do some flag waving, but they're, ... well, Canadians, eh? They aren't a jingoistic flag-waving patriotic fervor kinda crowd. (And in that group I include the Brits, the Americans, and the Aussies.)
Enjoy your stay.

As one of the lesser Skeptics in this forum, I prefer to toy with the theories.
I considered the million dollar prize, but nothing I do shows up on camera, which makes it a no-go from the start.
Yes, you could say it's all in perception.

Hello everyone!
My dad was an active member of CSICOP for years (and may still be for all I know, I'll have to check on his status). A friend of mine back at my old workplace used to post on these forums a lot and I always meant to register, but never got around to it until now, a few years later. It looks like a really interesting forum and hopefully many good times will be had.

Hello all! I'm a queer college student from Los Angeles attending California State University Nothridge. My inspiration to become a skeptic and atheist was really kicked off by Octavia E. Butler's "The Parable of the Sower" while I was attending a Catholic high school. My campus has no skeptic or atheist organizations and there doesn't seem to be much interest for one, so I've been trying to get involved in the local area. What I am involved with on my campus is the queer and feminist organizations.

Well, howdy right back atcha, KBHunter. ( I used to be able to throw in a quite believable "Y'all", but my years being removed from the deep south tend to make me think that looks like I'm trying too hard or just being condescending, so you'll have to take the Y'all as implicit.)
Having cheated a bit, I see you headed on over to the Bigfoot arena. Are you another refugee from the BigFootForums? We've got some dedicated debunkers (and believers) in there. So much so, that we may never hear from you again in the other areas. Those crews tend to hang out in that one sub-forum. (I never understood the passion for the subject. It's cool and all that - I love cryptozoology as a casual read from time to time. But the absolute frothing at the mouth fury of some of the threads/posts is a thing to behold.)
Bethatasitmay, you settle down wherever you choose. There's a lot of other good stuff on the boards. A little bit of something for all tastes.

You did not read the title of my post. It is not about my DNA, it is about which cultures had influence on my life.
I was raised in south Brazil (60%).
My mother is a genuine Brazilian, as my father a genuine Italian (15%).
I am living in London since 2008, speaking fluent English with British accent. (25%).
Portuguese language was quite important to me develop critical thinking and philosophical beliefs. (60%)
My father found the path to the dead nations when I was seven years old, but his actions was strong enough to keep the cultural legacy alive. When I became older, my interest in Italian culture and history was immense (from the Roman Empire history to the World War II events). (15%)
Since Brazil culture after the 70's had a strong presence of English language, I became aware of English history (from the Celts to the America colonization) during the 90's, playing RPG games with my friends. (25%)

Hi. If I had known these forums were so active I would've joined them a lot earlier.
Anyway, a bit about me. I used to be prone to believing in conspiracy theories, new age spirituality, and utopian social movements, but my background in philosophy provided a foundation for the good folk over at CFI to convince me of the importance of skepticism and critical thinking. As I learned about logical fallacies and cognitive biases, I was able to deconstruct all my irrational beliefs, and now I am happy to announce I am woo-free!
My current pet theory is that critical thinking (including logic, argumentation, logical fallacies, cognitive biases, skepticism, and philosophy of science) should be taught in schools starting at an early age and continuing on throughout one's educational career, and if it was, it could solve many social ills. For those of us lucky enough to live in a democracy, since the people call the shots, I feel our best option is to educate them so that as a whole we end up making the best collective decisions.
Looking forward to some great discussions :)

Yeah, hi, everyone. I think people can keep their expectations rather low as far as my presence on the board is concerned, since I'm a devout member of the Church of Lurkology. I primarily signed up to be able to use the search function.
Oh, also, I'm a Level 12 Quantum Astrologist with a Ph.D. in Advanced Qigong, and whenever I astral project, I walk around town and lick other people's Reiki. I hope that's okay with you guys.Is that what it was? Mystery solved.

A warm velcome to all Germans newbies. We are about to launch an invasion of Poland Canberra, to restore some sanity to the place.
I'm asking for volunteers to join this worthwhile enterprise. The rewards are great. One Goat and two rabbits, plus a jug of goats milk and a piece of goat cheese to all who accept this mission. :D

I have decided that I would make Friday my official welcome NEWB's day . Welcome NewB's have a fresh glass of goats milk, a fresh baked Grayman oatmeal cookie, a MINTIE , Take a rabbit out of the pen and hand it to the cook and be sure to tell him how you want it prepared. After which you may go about your way.
