Havering had a reasonably good look around, I've gathered as much. 15 posts before one gets an avatar or any other ability to personalise ones forum…..well, persona,? other than the odd smilie.
So, other 'then' being a sceptic with a tough hide, I'm also an uneducated dyslexic with a bad attitude.

I decided to apply for membership in this forum because of the excellent debunking of Steven Jones and his thermite theory. Thermite did not destroy the World Trade Center, as most of you probably already know.
However, I'm not convinced that it was merely an airplane crash followed by an office fire. This viewpoint will probably get me in trouble with some of you.
Some things that I think about that aren't often discussed are:
1. What about the damage seen to WTC 3, 4, 5, and 6 and the fatal damage done to the Deutsche Bank (Banker's Trust)? This is an underreported side of the 9/11 story. The WFC was heavily damaged, as were Century 21 and the Millenium Hilton. Any explanation of 9/11 must account for all the damage seen, not just what happened to WTC 1, 2 and 7.
2. What about the different colors of the dust? It seems very obvious to me as a research scientist that a chemical process produces a single color of dust. It doesn't matter if it's a test tube in a laboratory or the WTC. Two or more different colors of dust indicates more than one chemical process ongoing. Nobody that I know of is talking about this, and I'd like to.

Termites didn't destroy the WTC, either! Debunking things is fun and easy! Can termites bite through steel? No. Debunked! Can office fires melt steel? No. Debunked. Can thermite be precisely timed? No. Debunked.
I'd like to see somebody debunk Dr. Judy Wood's theory, and I mean a real debunking. Saying she needs a new hairstyle isn't a debunking.
I want to see someone attack her theory head on instead of attacking her as a person. Has this been done on this forum? I haven't found it, yet.

Hello, all.
I'm Kurt Komoda. Long time lurker in the skeptical community. I live in New Jersey, work in NYC, and have done some volunteer work for the New York City Skeptics- designing flyers for their events.
As a lifetime martial artist, I'm always surrounded by followers of various mystical beliefs, healing arts, and the existence of chi. We always hear stories of touch-less knockouts, pendants of protection(anting-anting), and something that could generally be described as the "death touch." It should also be mentioned that I seem to find more followers of chiropractic and homeopathy in this area of my life than any other(but, that's hardly odd, considering the risk/existence of injury, the concern for one's health- misguided or not, and the wide swatch of people involved).
This forum has always been a great source of information and insight, and I hope that I can contribute in a positive manner!

Good morning everyone. Allow me to introduce myself. I'm a recently retired Biology teacher in the UK who now has the time and inclination to become better acquainted with the skeptic world. I was drawn to this site whilst looking for information to debunk the various claims of truthers. I recently became aware that one of my former pupils has been "awoken" and is promulgating all sorts of nonsense via Facebook and a blog that he writes. I am trying to point him towards better and more reliable sources of information in the hope that I can persuade him that he is wrong. This forum is an excellent resource in that regard. Any tips in how to handle that situation would be gratefully received.

It just goes to show. How does one identify oneself... I've never believed, but yet that was all I could find. The last time it was 'relevant' was when I went to the local catholic school and all my mates went to the CofE. We were not supposed to get on. We were supposed to be one side and another - but I suppose that's what went on where I lived. Small towns had that where I came from.

Many years....differences of view do not bother me (unless imposed on other), but the reasons for holding them do. And as we probably all know you can't rationalise a relationship.
I hope you find the information and help you need to show your spouse some sense :)
I live in hope, but how often does rational argument persuade?

Welcome Supermac. You will find plenty of answers in the Paranormal or Religious threads covering many topics.

Greetings and Salutations from yet another Australian!
After lurking for six months I've decided this forum is just too much fun to only stand by and watch: so I joined.
What am I going to contribute? I really don't know - yet. One day it might be something really penetrating and erudite (sounds like well educated WD-40), and other days when the space alien parasite in my brain takes over, it could be total bollocks.
I have no particular specialisation, unless red wine drinking or gemstone fossicking counts.
Anyhow, it's great to be here!

Hi. I will make some token posts just now.
I feel this 15-posts-before-you-can-post-a-link rule restricts me from proper debate of who I am and what I have to offer education.
So I will just suggest that you visit my homepage and ask me 15 questions and I will post 15 very brief answers in 15 different posts.
Then once the rules here allow me to debate as the responsible educator I am, we can do that.

Welcome Peter,
Thank you. :)
we have that rule in place to keep the spammers out.
"We" - who is "we"?
Sorry if I sound defensive but I just got banned by an administrator from another board I had not long joined who also was known as the "Colonel" aka "the Office of Engineers" on the World Affairs Board where everyone there posts in fear of not offending him.
I just hate all those jumped up little Hitlers who can't face an open debate. I mean "Colonels" are supposed to be brave fighters right? Well this little man couldn't debate for one post with me. What a stinking coward! "Colonel", ha!
I hope you are a better man than him Colonel.
I run a forum myself and in my experience "we" doesn't come in to it. I call the shots there. So sure I have my forum rules too I don't allow spammers but perhaps one man's spammer is another man's freedom fighter?
If you jump into some of the other forums and start posting you could have more then 15 post today alone and then you can start your own links

Well I have my own website which people can reach right now by clicking on my username beside my posts and then on "Visit Peter Dow's homepage".
It is a Scottish and international politics website. I call it "the Scottish National Standard Bearer" website. It has an associated forum, the "For Freedom Forums" as well.
It is really important to be able to collect together all my political ideas in one reliable place, one website, which I control. I find other people's websites have let me down when I break one of their rules and get valuable work deleted.

Hello everyone here. I've been following Randi and the work of the JREF for many years but only thought of joining this forum recently.
I'm a permanent resident of Japan, living with a self-confessed deist Japanese woman who thinks that buying all sorts of herbal new-age woo woo will fix any minor health problem she has. As you can imagine, things get interesting in my house every now and then.
Japan is full of scams and irrational junk that sometimes drives me up the wall. From magnetic health necklaces being recommended by real doctors, herbal Chinese medicine being the most popular treatment for minor ailments, to stupid stickers that are supposed to improve reception and lengthen battery life if you stick them on your mobile phone.
I would love to know if the JREF is active when concerning Japan. Anyone else living here?

Apart from all those scams and inventions which Japan is renown for. The worst unforgivable invention Japan has foisted on an unsuspecting world is the invention of sushi. :D

Hey, everybody! I've been lurking for almost a year without posting. I enjoy the skeptical thinking, rigorous intellectual discussion, and long walks on the beach at sunset.
What do you all have to say about the idea that an agnostic is just a cowardly atheist? I admit that there's no evidence of a god/gods, but lack of evidence isn't sufficient proof of non-existence.
From where I sit, I just don't know. :boggled:

I haz a frown thrown down on that noise.
... there's no evidence of a god/gods, but lack of evidence isn't sufficient proof of non-existence.
Decidedly. One can no more prove there isn't a god than one can prove there is one. I'm waiting for more evidence before I make up my mind on the subject.
I believe there must have been something that created the Universe and implemented all the laws like the law of gravity, the laws of chemical reaction, and the law of evolution.
So in essence, I suppose I do believe in a god.
But not the god of the Holy Bible or the Quran or the Book of Mormon. I believe that whoever or whatever created the Universe is so far removed from our understanding, that we'll never have the slightest idea about It.
But I'm fairly certain that whoever or whatever God is, It doesn't care too much if we covet our neighbor's wife or dishonor parents who aren't worthy of being honored, or that It wants us to pray facing Mecca or any of the other BS ideas that people make up and claim is what God wants.
Far as I can tell, It created the Universe 13.6 billion years ago, implemented all the laws of science that we've discovered so very recently, and then wandered off to work on other, more important and interesting projects. The idea that the creator of the Universe cares so very deeply about Earthlings is extremely self-flattering for the Earthlings, but it seems to be unsupported by history or current events.
I was raised as a Christian and I mostly keep my Christian values like tolerance and forgiveness and love for my fellow man. But I'm no Christian.
I suppose you've all heard the teleological argument for the existence of God: The existence of a wristwatch implies that there must be a watchmaker, and likewise the existence of an infinitely complex Universe implies that there must be an infinitely complex Universe-creator. So far, so good.
But doesn't the existence of an infinitely complex Universe-creator imply that some other entity created It? And isn't it actually harder to create a Universe-creator than it is to create a Universe?
My Catholic girlfriend at Georgetown University often urged me to change majors, from International Economics to Theology, because I spent so much time thinking about these issues. But I doubted a Jesuit university would have a hankerin' to give a diploma in Theology to a poor ol' agnostic rooster ...

It shouldn't.
The courage to be willing to admit uncertainty is far greater than what is needed to claim conviction.
A whole lot of problems could be avoided if more people were just willing to admit they were weren't sure about something instead of trying to prove how right they are.

I might be just a teenager, but I really admire James Randi's work and all the things he's done to promote the spread of skepticism. Unfortunately, my parents are hardcore 9/11 truthers, homeopathy/naturopathy believers, anti-vaxxers, and off-the-wall conspiracy theorists who would kill my ass if they ever found I was on this site. As long as I get free board, meals, and rides from them, arguing with them is out of the question. I turn to this site as a way of gaining a realistic view of the world, and as a break from their insanity.

I was instantly turned off sushi when one day I noticed in the kitchen/preparation room of a sushi maker picking his nose and rolling the contends in his fingers and flicking it across the room. Immediately after this, he started making sushi with his filthy hands. Sushi is a hands on affair, can't be made any other way. Another time, a sushi/Japanese food preparer just happened to come out of a toilet after having a crap and walking straight out with not so much as wetting his hands let alone washing them. How did I know he took a crap? The smell.

Thought I might as well do this, this may be a bit long but I have nothing else to do, so here goes.
My name is Jeremy, I grew up believing in ghosts, god, etc. To this day I'm a still a little gullible. Conspiracies that involve any harm to me or my family cause me a bit of anguish because a little bubble of thought in pops in my mind that says "What if they're not crazy?". I think it began with ninth grade, near the end of the year I started having severe depression and panic attacks mostly over the usual crap school brings, name calling, being left out, etc. I didn't go back after the following the summer so I am a high school dropout. This then escalated into panic attacks over my health. I had a strange spot on the bottom of my foot that I was convinced was cancer. It turned out to be a Plantar wart. I've always had a bit of paranoia which began with watching and listening Alex Jones. Since I had nothing to do I began reading more into conspiracies and accidentally came across blogs about skepticism, and eventually to James Randi and JREF. I'm going to try to use this site as a learning tool, I want to train myself to become more skeptical and stop taking everything on the internet at face value. 9/11 conspiracies were the first thing to go, after doing some actual reading and getting over the "all news sources are paid shills unless they agree with the 'inside job' theory" attitude I began to see it's usually the theorists that do the lying.
Hopefully I won't be to annoying with my paranoia on this site, I know I have a problem but I'm trying ever so slowly to get over it.
Thank you for reading.

Well having only gone to a community college myself and having worked as an Engineer, Project Engineer and Production Engineer designing connectors for power utilities as well as gun, missile and equipment cases for military and civilian applications (though the missile cases didn’t get much civilian applications). I can assure you that not everybody treats such a thing as a joke.
Also you can get a lot of the basic stuff out of the way at a community college before you move onto some other school (just make sure the credits are transferable to the 4 year school).
Welcome to the forum and I hope everything works out for you what ever way you would like it to.

Hi, My name is WillyWonka. Actually my name is not really WillyWonka. I am a physicist working in the field of radiation safety for the last thirty years.
I am a lifelong skeptics, and I am still amazed of the number of smart and no so smart people, including my own family, who believe the supernatural, or any of the urban legends.
I've got interested in JREF from listening The Skeptics Guide to the Universe and Skeptoid podcasts.

Hi WillyWonka, and welcome. I am not a physicist but a fan of physics. :)

Greetings to you all!
Is there room for another atheist in this forum?
I've come here as part of my search for knowledge. After a year garnering a fair bit from ATS, I noticed that there's plenty going on here at JREF Forum too. I will be getting involved in discussions and hopefully will be as useful to other members as I'm hoping you'll be to me.
Getting involved alright, so much conspiracy spewing outta your posts, I'm getting lost. Welcome, and are you a homeopath or what :D

I have somewhat the opposite problem from the intent of this forum, but I see no other place to ask my question. I want to delete my account -- Ateophile, that is. I have another account which I want to contribute under, but I would like to dispense with Ateophile first. Any ideas? I hope this isn't another Hotel California (of which there are many).

Just contact a mod. They should be able to help you out. Or an Admin. Send a PM.

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is. There's nothing really attached to having an "account" here. If you don't wish to post, just don't post. If you don't wish to read, just don't log on. Being a registered forumite really doesn't require much of you and doesn't convey any real world privileges, so "deleting" an account is just a lot of work for something you can achieve rather easily by just not involving yourself.
If you merely want to change your name, you can achieve that by the a.m. advice from Roadtoad - just PM a mod (LashL,Lisa Simpson, Darat).
