Greetings, Folks--

I was put onto this site by a friend from another forum. I don't know his screen name here but will find out.

I'm an English teacher in the California Community College system, and I live in Butte County, northern California. My first degree was in Music and English, and my Master's is in English.

Besides music, playing and listening, I have many, many other interests. I'm 57, so I've had some time to develop them. Among these are politics, firearms, archery, bonsai, cooking, history, woodworking, gardening, and outdoor recreation.

Since this is apparently a philosophy board, I think this will be an interesting membership.

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is. There's nothing really attached to having an "account" here. If you don't wish to post, just don't post. If you don't wish to read, just don't log on. Being a registered forumite really doesn't require much of you and doesn't convey any real world privileges, so "deleting" an account is just a lot of work for something you can achieve rather easily by just not involving yourself.

If you merely want to change your name, you can achieve that by the a.m. advice from Roadtoad - just PM a mod (LashL,Lisa Simpson, Darat).
The "problem" is that I get email solicitations from JREF as Ateophile. I wish to standardize on the new name across all freethought sites, and dispense with Ateophile as much as possible. Anyway, thanks for being explicit about who the moderators are.

I am new here and I have been lurking for about a week now. I found this site because I had read read some of Sylvia Browne's books and I was googling her to see if I could find out if she was at all accurate at being a psychic. I did not find that in my research. What I found instead is a you tube video of Browne and Randi in an interview. I googled James Randi and I watched some of the videos he has on you tube and I found that I have been thinking the way he does for my entire life. As a child I couldn't even believe in Santa Clause for the appropriate amount of time. When I was four years old I asked my mom if the handwriting on the gifts from Santa was my father writing with his left hand...she told me not to ruin it for my sisters. My mother claims I was born 30 years old because I was an odd child in that I thought very logically and rationally as a child having been 'expected' to think magically.

I have picked up versions of what happens to us when we die lately because I have had 3 miscarriages and my rational mind is not matching my emotional state over the losses. I picked up the bible and I told my husband after I had read it that I didn't really like that God. He seemed to be just as susceptible to the less desirable of human traits as we are and that isn't someone I want to have any kind of power over me. I also read up on Buddhism. I like that one as it pertains to this life and how to just be a good person, as in aware that the person across the table from you really isn't all that different from you. I also read Sylvia Browne's account of "The Other Side". I liked that one for a minute because it appealed to my intellect. I liked a good challenge and the idea of furthering the education of my soul was intriguing. I have found that a small part of my envies those who have faith (religious faith), but there's a larger part of me who enjoys having control over my life and the road it has taken. I like that I have what I have because I worked hard for it and not because some being I cannot see or hear has deemed me worthy.

Well, that's my progression from being totally rational most of my life, to dabbling in the idea of religion, to going back to being who I was to begin with. Thanks for reading!

Hello everyone. I have been a skeptic and an atheist since I was 14. I was raised in a fundamentalist Lutheran family in Wisconsin, and was sent to a Lutheran elementary school. Starting in my teenage years, I developed an insatiable appetite for books by Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov (mostly his nonfiction, but some of his fiction as well), Stephen Hawking, and others. I have a B.S. and M.S. in engineering, but have a wide range of interests in addition to the natural sciences, including history and philosophy. I am a hardcore metaphysical naturalist and decided to join this board in order to associate with like-minded people.

Well, crikey mates, thought I'd pop round and introduce meself, so 'and me a Foster's and toss another shrimp on the barbie . . . .

okay, I'm not Australian. But my wife lived there for a couple of years when she was in high school, and still spells "color" with a 'U'; does that count?

I'm a prosecuting attorney from Springfield, Illinois, and I'm constantly faced with dealing with members of the public who regard science with suspicion and the Bible as, well, holy writ; hence my interest in this forum.

Hi All,

Relatively new skeptic from Australia here. Went to TAMOZ recently and had an awesome time!

Since TAMOZ, I've had one friend try to convince me that Lloyd Pye's theory that humans were genetically engineered by aliens is true and another try to convince me that evolution isn't true (and bizarrely cited Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey as an influencing factor in his realization).

The woo runs deep!

Welcome JamesBeattie. What the hell has 2001 A Space Odyssey got do with evolution?
The aliens would have had to evolve, just as if a creator would have had to evolve.
That's the way the universe works. Simplicity evolves into complexity.

arthwollipot
12th December 2010, 03:14 AM
The point of 2001 was that the primitive apes were "uplifted" and their intelligence considerably boosted by contact with the Monolith.

Essentially, it was the Monolith that cause human intelligence to appear, not evolution.

Uh, hello from Australia. Found this place in the weirdest of ways. Was googling something (long since forgotten), which lead me to the Loose Change Forums (I know, I know! :p), and I ended up in a thread where your man Gravy was debating them very logically, calmly, and armed with excellent facts. Somewhere amongst what I was reading linked back to here (actually, I'm not entirely sure which I found first, this or there, but whatever), and I've found myself just trawling thru things since, and been very impressed with the level of debate ion here, and the ability to stick to the DAMN FACTS! (something many others seem incapable of)

I've spent the last several weeks catching up on threads (reading the 911 Conspiracy thread started by delphi_ote (many thanks, most excellent and informative, I learned a great deal of factual data and sources from that thread and it's offspring), and have been looking around, feeling very pleased with the state of the place. Is nice to find a place where logic and reason are the order of the day. :)

As for me, just turned 38, currently living in Western Australia (the opposite side of the country to where I originated), and always reading, reading, reading, looking to learn more.

I'll be around, but I'm trying to familiarise myself as much as I can so I limit just how much of an ass I make out of myself. See you all; around. Cheers

Hello from Sweden. I have been reading this forum for so many years I have forgotten how I found it, but I am pretty sure I was researching something about scepticism. I probably spend most time at the CT-subforums, especially the invaluable collection of information about 9/11, but I have found lots of interesting discussions all over the place. I have finally decided to register as a user, not because I plan on doing a lot of debating (that isn't really one of my strengths), but i thought that I may wan't to say at least something about some issues. It's nice to finally be a part of the forum (hopefully that feeling will last for a while...)

What is this place coming to? A female newbie arrives talking of spanking and not even a single spicy risqué double entendre from the lot of you?

I've come to expect more. This is the JREFF Harass the New Meat thread, after all. And c'mon nerds. It's another Skepchick. They're harder to come by than a sommelier at an AA meeting.

FloatingLotus, I apologize for my fellow miscreants. They must be off their feed. (Grayman hasn't been around with cookies for a while so they're forced to eat those horrid Minties and Tim Tams.)

Like all geek/nerds, we generally greet a new female with a good deal of snickering and posturing. We will try harder in the future.

I am interested in shooting and the outdoors. I am currently working on two degrees, one in Criminal Justice, the other in Crime Scene Investigation/Latent Evidence. I was an MP in the US Army.

I am a moderator at a gun forum, and am constantly subjected to the stereotypes that come with it; all gun owners must be Conservative (read Republican), god-fearing, Palin-loving, etc. Sometimes I feel really out of place.

I do not believe in God or gods, ghosts, etc. I try to place reason and logic firmly in her seat (ala Thomas Jefferson) with anything I see, read or hear.

The liver? You mean his liver. Right? :D

How about we SoCal Tuxedo cats offer the Newbs some lovely California Rolls? Wasabi and pickled ginger, too, if they like. Delicious.

So are we SCTCs now? Or how about SoCal Cat Lovers (SCCLs)? Or SoCal Feline Friends (SCFFs)? SoCal Cat Savers (SCCSs)? SoCal Cats Off the Menu (SCCOM)? SoCal Opposing Feline Filleting (Scoff)? I like SCOFF myself.

Anyway, I think the Newbs would love the California Rolls with extras. And we could offer Cheese and Bean Burritos for a change of pace. What do you think?

If he doesn't act fast, there will also be Colonel Cordon Bleu, Colonel Wellington, Roast Leg of Colonel with mint sauce, Stir-fried Colonel bits, Colonel burgers, Roast Colonel with Yorkshire Pudding, Colonel and Kidney Pies, Deep Fried Colonel Fingers, Buffalo-style Colonel Toes, Colonel Rings, Colonel Stew, Barbecued Colonel-back Ribs, Colonel Tartare, Colonel Shish Kabobs, Colonel Fondue, and Sliced Colonel Grinders.

ETA: We should add the hamsters to our opposing filleting efforts, don't you think?

SCOFF fears that he is becoming senile with his constant insistance on eating Cats and Hamsters (SCOFF has taken Hamsters under its protective umbrella as well as Cats). SCOFF is dedicated to rescuing the unfortunate Cats (and, now, Hamsters too) from the hands of a probably senile madman who wants to serve them to poor, unsuspecting Newbs. End the Madness! I was out of line and had no right to say to you what I said. My only (feeble) excuse is that I was upset at something personal when I posted and typed before my mind engaged. I was thinking (more like emotioning) along the lines of "my father would never have done that." He is my ideal military person.

I do appreciate the service of veterans; my father was a veteran of both Korea and Vietnam, and as a child I lived on a Navy base during Vietnam. I remember too many fathers killed or missing (including my next door neighbor) to believe that service to country is not worthy of respect. I again apologize for impugning your service.

I'm sure you are not senile; I'm sorry that you are sick, and especially sorry that it is as a result of your service to your country. I'm sorry that I went too far with what started as an "insult the Colonel" joke.

I made this apology in the thread instead of a PM because I insulted you in the thread. I'm sorry for the derail, but I felt I owed you a public apology. I am also sorry for taking the fun out of something you enjoy so much.

I will still be a member of SCOFF, and will still try to keep Cats and Hamsters off the menu, but I will try very hard not to cross the line between good fun and meanness in my efforts

BAKED OR BARBECUED ARMADILLO RECIPE
2 lbs. armadillo meat

Lemon juice
Dash onion salt
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste
Lemon pepper to taste

Season with salt, pepper, lemon pepper, lemon juice, and rub with butter. Wrap in foil and bake at 325 degrees F. for approximately 45 minutes. Remove foil, add more butter and brown. For barbecued armadillo, baste with barbecue sauce over grill after removing foil.

Welcome, mrgrouch! Through his books, James Randi was my initial inspiration to become a skeptic years ago too (and I grew up in Mexico, though I never saw him on TV there). Oslo

Oslo: Some parts of it are quite beautiful, most of it is plain ugly, but it has got everything a capital city should have. Many interesting museums.
Bergen: A very beautiful and rainy city with very annoying inhabitants (but still, some of them are my friends).
Narvik: Far away and extremely dull.

thanks to all for their welcoming.
Welcome, mrgrouch! Through his books, James Randi was my initial inspiration to become a skeptic years ago too (and I grew up in Mexico, though I never saw him on TV there). I've been lucky enough to meet him a couple of times in person since then to let him know and thank him (as I am sure many, many have). He's a great guy in person as well. :)

i saw him in an interview with ricardo rocha, and after duplicating some of the uri geller tricks ricardo kept saying that perhaps james randi had the same kind of powers as uri geller but was trying to trick everybody into believing something else... and i was thinking to myself, "how thick can a skull be?"

cheers

IM from Norway and mainly wanted to introduce you al (if you dont know about it already) to The Venus project. but i will ofcource take part in other discusions aswell.

I see some placed you like to know how i got to know aboput this forum or how i found it, in my case i was told about James Randi himself as a guy with a good vision and an open mind. with interesting vcids on youtube. And that led me here.
So again hi to all the good people in here and do what you can to get the information out, and to keep it as accurate as posible :)
Sins (unless im mistaken) that is part of what we do here.

You should keep your hands above the sheets when you're in bed.

Tried to figure out through a quick scan what was customary in an introduction here, but mostly found references to cooking road-kill, cats and the occasional Norwegian.

So, I'll just keep it short and boring: I'm a middle aged, Swedish engineer, working with IT. I have a wife and a couple of kids. My hobbies are mountainbiking and making music. I guess I've been a skeptic since I was born, but I can't prove it...

Hello. Where in Sweden do you live?

I reside on Tjörn. Sixth or fifth largest island, an hour's drive northwest of Göteborg.

@TubbaBlubba Not too far away, in Lerum.Welcome to JREF, uncommonman. I would like to invite you to join SoCal Opposing Feline Filleting (SCOFF), a wonderful organization doing good work in the Welcome thread.

If, however, you persist in your intention to consume cats, SCOFF will do everything in its power to forestall you. In addition, we will place you on our newly created (just now) and already infamous WATCH LIST, so be warned. Besides, a nice California Roll or Cheese and Bean Burrito would taste much better.

@CT Thanks for the fanfare

@FattyCatty As, for the cat fare, cooking does not necessarily imply eating, and this is also true when it comes to Norwegians. Even if there is plenty of meat on the Norwegian Forest Cat, I would never eat a Norwegian - in any sense of the word(s). I'll stick to sushi and mexican food at least until I'm off the (dreaded) watch list.

I'm glad to hear you plan to stick to sushi and Mexican food instead of cat.

I'm a little concerned about your willingness to cook cats even if you don't eat them, so I'll have to consult with other SCOFF members as to whether or not that is watch-list worthy.

Anyway, enjoy yourself at JREF; there are pictures of cats in the Forum Community thread, although I don't remember any Norwegian Forest Cats offhand. I'm not sure if this is one or not.

Maybe he has a willingness to cook for cats? It could all be a misunderstanding? This, however, does seem watch-list worthy to me.

@uncommonman: Being on the watch list isn't so bad, you get all the California Rolls and burritos you can eat for the duration. :)

A few of you may recognize this user name. Yes I am 'that' Sciwoman - the one from the old RDF forum before it imploded earlier this year. (Don't want to rehash any of that, just giving ya'll some background.) I'm also Sciwoman over at Rational Skepticism. I use other names at other places.

Both a former christian fundamentalist and a former catholic, I've been an atheist now for 12 and a half years. Married, no kids, three cats, and no job at the moment. I hope no one holds it against me that I am married to Gawdzilla. :duck: I can't keep him in line in real life either. ;)

I'll probably lurk more than post. However, I'm glad to finally be here officially. :)
