I used to drink this stuff "Double Tavárishch" (I think that’s what it was called), 160 poof vodka, back in the “good’ol days”. Like drinking rubbing alcohol, though with more deleterious results.

One of my current libations is Bacardi Select (used to be Bacardi Black) an un-spiced dark rum. When I was working on an equipment install down in Virginia the local bar didn't carry it so I went with a Bacardi 151 drink (have had it before). Everything was fine, I went back to the hotel and went to sleep. When the alarm went off (haven't needed an alarm to wake up for almost two decades) I found myself standing next to the bed, so much for the 151 on that trip.

LMAO! You were blacked out, standing up??

No, I never had any blackouts (unfortunately even in the "good'ol days", used to drink a lot of whiskey back then too) so I still remember everything. Best I can figure is that I woke up and got up just before the alarm, as usual, but just drifted off again standing there until the alarm sounded. Either that or the aliens had just dropped me off before the alarm!!!

Though I doubt many would remember me--I was very active here (same name) many years ago and, since I can't find any ofg my old posts, I think it may have been prior to some cataclysimic change. I am heartened to see many familiar names and look forward to some fun discussions here again.

I'm a hard-nosed skeptic, but have become less "in your face" than I once was and I guess, in my old age, I have become more tolerant of casual ignorance. What does chap my hide however, is ignorance combined with hate, arrogance or malevolence (i.e., people who want to aggressively impose their beliefs on others without being open-minded to the opposing view).

The most loathsome creatures however, IMO, are those who cynically prey on ignorance and these swine need to be exposed and punished as they take advantage of the grief-sdtricken, the poor, the innocently ignorant and those who love and care for them.

I enjoy a good scrap and am always smiling, so no hard feelings y'all.

So... do ANY of the old-timers remember old SYFer?

Hello JREF folk,

I am from Durban South Africa, but I am currently travelling Europe. I run a local Skeptics in the pub, I am an Atheist (the 99.9% kind in the Dawkinesque sense), and I love intellectual discussions about all sorts of things. I love podcasts - Skepticality, SGU, and Rationally Speaking.

I am reading Consciousness Explained by Dennett currently, and I studied a bit of Neuropsychology plus a whole whack of other Psychology topics in my degree program.

I also love Salsa dancing!

I am in Rome for the next week, then Paris and then the USA for a month, culminating in my first time at TAM.

Pleased to meet you all.

Lovely! Now I have to go research these references as I am certainly, given the evolution here (no pun intended), a rank newb.

Welcome back. You can see that we have a brand new menu now. There's rabbit alla king, roo steaks, hamster roasted and served with a green salad, goat also roasted in a wood fired oven, there's even some road kill to save money. Refreshment is either goats milk, or a Millers Draft.

To be honest, it's rather all over the place. Once I get some readers who shower me with comments I'll be able to better streamline my content, I think ... at the moment it's politics/science/drugs. I'm a wealth of knowledge on the third topic in the list but I've got a lot of reading to do in regards to the others.

I'm attempting to write a book detailing some of the more interesting events that have happened to me. Sort of using the blog as a launching pad and a means of practicing my writing.

I really don't expect to make any money out of it but a man can dream.

eFolks,

I'm from Holland and I try to make paintings... and ehm... all these buttons and options scare the cr*p out of me! AAaaaaa

It took me huge amounts of energy and brainpower + 42 minutes to get to this pointlike place in space and eh whats it called? Time! BUT now I found out about The Holy Smileylist, how it works and stuff like that... and well... that just saved my day! :) Now I finally can go to sleep :boxedin: feeling content! I thank God for this  I mean eh Darwin! Or was it ehm... Both? Neither?! Uhm... :duck: I thank ehm... I don't know, should I thank anyone? Maybe not.

If you ask me a question > don't be surprised if I am not able to answer - relatively soon. It's not personal! Hopefully I will be able to learn how to make a reply - very soon!

Must remember... The Eternal Words... DON't PANIC!

What's this? hello? spoil? hey ahaaacolors! yes;)

Sometimes I wish I was a caveman... some dirt... a cave and that's it -> Let's Paint!
But then again... no beer... :jaw-dropp no ehm... no eh... well thats about it, is it not? No beer was there? 10.000 BC?

Some viking girl told me this: 'Beer I mean BEER geheheh is the world's most widely consumed and probably oldest of alcoholic beverages; it is the third most popular drink overall, after water and tea.' Is that right? 'Beer is one of the world's oldest prepared beverages, possibly dating back to the early Neolithic or 9500 BC.' Well thats 500 years off... Now I scared myself! :yikes: I must be crazy...

So... now I am going to press Post Quick Reply! I guess...
Can't wait!!!

While Alien sets his phaser on stun . The Colonel who already has the Alian in his cross hairs, takes the safety off on his sniper rifle. now the Ailian must decide if the Colonel will shoot him with tranquilisers or something else. :D the smart thing would be for the Alian to surrender.

Welcome Baphomet, before I made my first post on this forum I decided that I simply would not use any smileys. So far I’ve not used a single one, so you’re not alone. Guess I’ll never be able to start that ‘talk only in smileys thread’ !!!

Hello, I am MentalMoca because it's an anagram. Of course I could have chosen "CalmToeMan" or "NoClamMeat", but I thought this was more fitting.
I've been a full-fledged skeptic for about a year now. I suppose I was a skeptic before then, but I hadn't found out about the movement until I was browsing youtube and discovered Randi. I went to the last TAM and I've been a JREF member since then. I am also registered for the upcoming TAM.
I am a college student studying psychology, currently on summer break. I'm being extremely lazy, although I have recently rejuvenated my desire to learn how to cold read. I was pleasantly surprised to see James Randi mentioned in Tradecraft: The Art and Science of Cold Reading.
Anyway, to celebrate my one-year skeptic anniversary, I thought I would begin participating here.

Hello. I'm Phelix. I've already posted twice but hey.
I'm very interested in both sceptic and more conspiratorial "alternative knowledge" output, but have never really found much to quench my appetite in either. Skeptics tend to spend too much time debunking stuff that is obviously wrong (9/11 conspiracy theories, bigfoot, etc.) or not using very good arguments (Dawkins on God) while conspiracy minded people seem to spew out so so much nonsense that it doesn't engage at any level.

My favourite finds so far have been skeptoid and the US skeptic magazine (on the sceptic side) and Russ Kick's anthologies (on the alternative side).
If anyone could suggest anything similar, particularly on the alternative side, then that'd be awesome. Otherwise, I'll keep on a-browsing :)

Hello!

I'm Maeria. I'm a going-on-to-second-semester psychology student, and a young whipper-snapper by all accounts. I'm only just coming to terms with the world without supernatural overtones: I admit to having my money taken by tarot-card readers, past-life regression (..makers...people?) - ers and the like only a year before now. After asking questions I never got a satisfactory answer to, I'm ready to actually learn. After all I've been exposed to, I think I much prefer a world where everything obeys to natural, physical laws rather than have a gazillion past lives, exist eternally outside time, have my "soul" split, or whatever is the rage these days.

Edit: it makes me feel better that I'm not too far down on the scale. The people who've recced the site before have been consistently above 35, so I was a bit intimidated.

What brought me here to JREF?

Truth be told the reason behind that is because a few nights ago while I was sleeping an alien being named "Bonecharm The Subjugator" came down from Proxima Centauri, which is several light years from Earth.

They explained to me how it was of tremendous responsibility for me to join JREF, And if I did not do so, then he was going to send his wife "Emperess Who Feeds in the Cave of Morning and is Passing by Wicked Oblivion" after me, and she would devour my soul like a truffle.

So not having much of a choice I decided to go along with this and I am now seen as a celebrity on his planet, which is inhabited by the Nova Gremlins Of The Wild Zone.

They even named a soft-drink after me...I'm honored.

Thank you for having me. :)

What, you walked into a catholic mass? Welcome!

While the Kat Lickers are definitely weirdo's, at least some of there absurdity is through manipulation of the masses, and they have the comfort of knowing that if they were conned, so were millions of others. Whereas some of the people for the million pound challenge, and some in the discussions I've read on here have managed to come up with completely outlandish claims completely devoid of any significant manipulation, and therefore they must be nothing more than mentally ill, or con men/women.

None of the above stops me wanting to point and laugh at some of their claims though, maybe if we point and laugh collectively and it's loud enough they will go away.

Welcome to all you NEWB's out there . here is the weekend MENU
Drinks = Fresh squeezed Goats milk, Belgin beer, and Miller draft beer,
Vegies = tossed salad , corn on the cob , and pickled beets
Meat = Roo steaks, Hamsters,Rabbits, and fresh Atlantic salmon
Dessert = Grayman oatmeal cookies , MINTIES, and my favorite Cherry pie.

I'll take the MGD, salad, roo steaks and cherry pie if that's alright.

My name's Dawn and I've been reading skeptical mags and listening to the classical list of skeptically-oriented podcasts for ages. It was time for me to stop simply partaking and start participating I thought, and this place seemed the most reasonable and broad spectrum of the forums I visited. I'm looking forward to being part of the community.

Well, my name is Mehdi, and I'm 15 years old (there goes my respect). I've already introduced myself in the thread I made yesterday night, but I suppose a more fitting introduction would'nt hurt.
I'm slightly interested in the work of James Randi (seriously, the million dollar offering is just more than clever), and managed to end up at this forum after doing some research. As an ongoing skeptic, I think that I will enjoy the content of this forum, despite my lack of intelligence and experience, compared to the majority of the members on this forum. :p I hope I won't be too much of a burden to you. ^^

Oh, it's you. Enjoy your stay.

Glad you enjoyed it!

There are a few folks around here that have a sorta serious intellectual sense of humor; so read, and then re-read some posters responses. There are more than a few here that are masters of the pun, sarcasm, and other forms of odd humor. Many of them don't use smilies to help you catch on. They are devious, yes, devious I say!

Skinny, you mispelled 'deviant.'

Hi all, skeptic is just another label for me - I've been one most of my life, except for a few years when I ended up following the instructions to check my brain at the door (never again!).

I'll say from the start, I'm here partly to promote my "agenda" that it seems to me the skeptic community isn't covering and pointing out all the areas of balderdash that it can and should. Too many people are just NOT SKEPTICAL ENOUGH in some areas (partly because some organizations have managed to infiltrate their ideas so deeply into the culture most people can't tell where these ideas come from) and I hope to stir things up (but in a GOOD way!).

There's also other interesting things, ideas and discussions that have attracted me here (gee, this place is about as big as the writing forum I'm on, also running on vbulletin), so we'll see how this goes. Oops, looks like I already posted in another thread while this tab is open...

Perhaps the last domino that got me here was Tim Farley (whom I follow on Twitter as @krelnik) saying he's now a JREF fellow. Congrats dude, and give 'em hell! I'll help you. :D

Hi folks, new member from the UK here. Having had an interest in the paranormal, cryptozoology etc as a youngster, it was only a matter of time before I started visiting various sites of that nature. I recently became interested again in the Bigfoot phenomena, remembering the Paterson film from many years ago, and how it fascinated me as a child. Sooo, I started visiting the BFRO and BFF sites, looking to find some evidence that there really were 8-10 foot high primates that stunk to high heaven, made blood - curdling screams in the small hours around campsites, and were found all over North America - even in Rhode Island, which I believe is very small, and about as densely populated as the South of England, where I live...and thats densely populated! After a couple of months trawling these sites, and becoming more and more incredulous as I watched presumably sane, intelligent people proclaim that photos of tree stumps and mangy bears were Sasquatch, I came to my senses and realised it was no more than folklore. The thing that I enjoyed most about it was reading the stories about people being creeped out in the woods, and listening to some of the sounds that people claimed were Bigfoot. There's not a wild wolf within 600 miles of where I live, and 3,000 miles of ocean between me and the nearest coyote, but even I could tell what I was hearing. So, I followed a link from BFF to here, and have been reading one of your threads where a certain Creekfreak claims to have photographed two Bigfoot lurking in the bushes while a helicopter hovers a few feet away. Highly amusing reading, I must say! On a par with BFF member Sasfooty and her family of Sasquatch living in her back garden, climbing on her roof, giving birth within 150 metres of her back door... and doing coyote impressions! For those that haven't read that particular story, I recommend it, it's a hoot! All that said, I would love to go out into the woods of Washington State or Oregon, I love being creeped out in the woods at night, and we don't have anything to compare in this country. I've been lurking and reading for a while, but might start to join in discussions soon.

Welcome, BaldSeagull, I think I was on that (or some previous) thread (with the bigfoot helicopter picture) when I first got here. Though I didn’t spend much time there, once I found out what they were attributing to the “bigfoot” in that picture. Glad to hear that you’ve come to your senses and I get deer, wild turkeys and.., wait.. wasn’t that a coyote? Yep, from the fur it left on my smashed in radiator, it was!! All around here (about 90 miles from NY city), ain’t hit no Sasquatch yet though (at least that might pay for the other damage).

Again, welcome everyone (just don’t run out in front of my car).

Hi!

As you can see from my join date, I've been lurking here since 2008. I probably could have gone longer, but today I saw a message at the top of my screen urging me to introduce myself, and I thought "why not?"

I've always been very inquisitive. I grew up as an Orthodox Jew, and I always struggled to believe in it -- especially because of all the repression I faced as a female. I would constantly ask for reasons, and would effectively be told "because we said so" or "because God said so."

I formally discovered the skeptic movement in my first year of university. There was an on-campus screening of Zeitgeist. At the time, the conspiracies blew my mind, but the missing details didn't really sit right with me, so I went straight to looking up any information I could find. Luckily, one of the first things I found was an SGU podcast discussing 9/11 truthers to nip that theory in the bud. I was hooked, and began listening every week, fascinated to learn more about science and the ways people are being duped.

Fast forward to 3 years later, I've just graduated with a degree in evil (a.k.a communications: advertising, PR and the like.) Because of this, I'm most fascinated by how marketing is used to dupe people into believing nonsense, and I aspire to help change this.

Yes, that was just a quick introduction.

Thanks, nice to meet you.

That would be an awesome campaign with oh so many issues to handle. But yes, it's possible to advertise for good causes -- and against bad ones, which is my canned response for people who act like I've sold my soul to the devil by choosing this career path. In fact, it's the inside look at all of the manipulative tactics used that makes me care more about consumer advocacy.

So I think I have a unique perspective on skepticism. I'm a big fan of Randi and the JREF. I also really enjoy the other major players in the skeptic society, especially Michael Shermer.

In addition I'm a huge movie fan. Roger Ebert is my favorite critic and writer. I follow him religiously (sorry, had to). Movies are my escape. I love the old and the new, everyone from Phillip Seymour Hoffman to Humphrey Bogart.

On a personal note I'm 28 yrs old, been married for 7 years, have a 6 year old and one on the way. I plan on bringing them up with good morals regardless of religion.

Ben, wondering what post count I'm at now...
We do not except post counts from other sites, so that has no bearing here

Hey I'm a newbie, just wanted to say hello.

I think I could best describe myself as a newly jaded skeptic!
In other words, I used to be something like a Bigfoot apologist ... meaning that whenever anyone would ask legitimate questions like why don't they ever find a dead body?, I would be the first to jump up and shout stuff like: "Well, obviously you've never been in the woods, how often do you see dead bears laying around? Never, right, and we know THEY exist" ... etc etc!! :D

I think I used to be like that with most every paranormal topic —*ghosts to UFOS — but I've lately become extremely tired with the lack of progress on every crypto front. I guess I'm tired of hoping.

But mainly, late last year I discovered the amazing podcast "MonsterTalk", and was surprised at how much I was resisting the hosts and their very reasonable scientifically-based objections to everything paranormal. It was odd ... I had always claimed to be open-minded to the possibility of the paranormal, but found I was close-minded to their skeptical counterarguments. For example, hearing them dismiss the Patterson Film made my skin crawl, like they were ridiculing a holy relic. I was surprised with myself — how had I got myself to a place where THAT would offend me? It was truly eye-opening, and I started taking a few steps back and re-evaluating my beliefs, and re-evaluating what being "open-minded" truly meant.

Good for you. Have you ever seen this short video on open-mindedness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T69TOuqaqXI)?

It's quite well done. I've posted it here quite a bit--as have others. ;)

Hi everyone. Thank you to the Moderators for approving my account. As you can see by my user name, I am interested in ufology. The UFOs I am interested in discussing are the ones that are believed to be of intelligent extraterrestrial origin. I am hoping to network in a genuine and constructive manner with believers and skeptics alike to separate fact from fiction in past and present sightings. I also look forward to participating in other topics from time to time.

Welcome aboard ufology. Both believers and sceptics are more than welcome here.

Here, I have some cookies given me by a man who claims he's from a distant star system.
They're quiet scrumptious actually. (jesting, okay?)

Hey everyone! I'm 28, female, currently live in Colorado, but grew up in Kansas. I've considered myself a skeptic for the last few years or so, though I used to believe in various silly things, including the catholicism I was raised with.

I have nowhere near 1,000 posts, but will soon have been to two TAMs. I went last year, and it was awesome (or should I say amazing?), and my recent last-minute decision to go this year is what prompted me to join the forum, since I'm going by myself this time and would like to meet people.

I got my username from a George Hrab song. I'm excited to see him at TAM this year!

Thanks Amb ... I'm working on getting my 50 posts in so I can post up my avatar. So far the calibre of the posts I have encountered is very refreshing ... and I hven't been attacked yet by flamers and trolls !

Welcome!

My Dads's side was from Kansas. I still have a US passport. Don't be too hard on yourself about "silly" things, they aren't always all that silly. I think many religious people are in their own way seeking a higher truth and want to do good in the world. It's better in my view than pursuing nothing but the next beer during whatever sports segment happens to be on.

Hi all, hope most of you accept this reject. I'm an ex-member of 3 truck forums, ex-members because I've been banned due to my skepticism and critical thinking when asking questions and/or posting my responses.

A lil about me:

I consider myself to be an effective communicator, one who understands the concept of constructive criticism and is open to receiving it.

My tittle may say "New Blood" but if anyone attempts to act like a donkey with me, please be forewarned, don't get offended if I ride you. Don't worry if I ever offend you, it would be my pleasure. :D

Thank you,

Leonardo
