Hi everyone! My name is Loopus. Well, not really. I'm a 23-year-old University of Houston student who, in a matter of weeks, will graduate with a degree in English. We'll see where I go from there...
My only real hobby is fencing, which I quite enjoy.
I found this forum from looking up the JREF One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge, which I think is very interesting and telling about "paranormal abilities." I found the Challenge Applications Forum (the one only KRAMER posts in) first and found it to be very entertaining. I thought I'd check the rest of the place out too, and it looks like fun. I've been slowly becoming more of a skeptic throughout my life, and I like the atmosphere of this place. Very refreshing.
I am an atheist and do not believe in anything supernatural or paranormal, but I'm mostly tolerant of the beliefs of others.

I don't know about Bedforshire, but for the love of pete don't move to Newcastle. That footy team is pants.
(PS welcome!)
Thanks for the welcome.
Did you say newcastle? I have heard lots of nice things about the chicks in Newcastle. They would wear the shortest skirts ever known to man, in the middle of winters. The g-string is supposed to keep them warm.
Imagine footy on telly, bottle of Stella or Bud in one hand, remote control in other hand - A newcastle girl has immense abilities to make every footy worthwhile. You wont even care who is scoring (on telly that is!)

You needn't worry. Roadtoad and Fowlsound are both people I respect. If they kid you, it's because they like you. Don't be afraid to give back what they give. Frankly, I think Titanium is over-rated, and the ozone layer could use a few less fossil-fuel-guzzling-big-rigs.

Hello to everybody. I found Jref surfing about 3 years ago. Been lurking and reading the forums and the comm. I've read every comm. in the archive and a whole lot of the forums. I am a skeptic. Since I have been reading here I have tried to take a more active role in helping people around me with the "stuff" they have shoved at them. I build and fix things for my living so I have always had people asking about things. Lately I have taken it a little farther and try to explain the facts. (science) I did get "bluebible" taken off the "100 Top science List" last friday morning. They said they had made a mistake and were sorry about it. Thanks for all the good reading. Panelman

Gosh, Panelman, thanks for the compliment for JREF Forum. It is great, I agree. I subscribed to this thread about a week ago, and now seem to be welcoming people every day. I'm done now, I think.
What I have read here are some of the most amazing bits of knowledge and use of language that I have ever seen in my humble life. I am often inspired by even the smallest of phrases, and wish I could hold them forever. But that's just remembering the words.
The true value is in the ability to understand, and share what you have learned with others. I owe a debt of gratitude to this forum that I think should best be repaid by using the skills I have learned here with others.
I never did post here when I started reading, so maybe this too late. Anyway, thanks to everyone I've ever conversed with here and on other threads. That is something I will keep forever, never forgetting the anonymous little quips, the insights, the pain and joy of people I may never meet. I keep those inside. Valued bits of a life well spent.

Hello All:
I am Hank Alme, 35 years - 10 days old, resident of Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA. I work at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
I cannot remember when I first found the JREF site, but it would have to be some time around 1995 or so. I remember surfing to Randi.org in grad school when I should have been working on my dissertation.
I like to read, to cook, to play really bad chess via email, and to waste hours looking stuff up in the online Oxford English Dictionary.
Cheers,

Hello, everyone.
My name's Larry. Leroy's a nickname I caught in grade 9, and it's kinda stuck.
I'm divorced with two great kids. Alexandra (9) and Trevor (6). I get along better with my ex now and all that.
I was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, where I currently reside.
I'm a CNC machinist in the mouldmaking trade.

HeyLeroy, for various reasons maybe I should be the one to say: welcome to the forums.
You've officially apologized for disagreeing with me. You may have noticed that some posters approve very much, and some are mocking you gently. I fall into both camps.
The fact is, if people here started a thread apolohizing every time they get corrected on a trivial matter of fact, then there'd hardly be enough room for any other threads. Even if people only apologized to me every time I turned out to be more correct, there'd be a long line of penitents whipping themselves.
If you'd gone for me when I disagreed with you, and if you'd called me a fool and a liar, then I'd deserve an apology. Otherwise, the sign on the door says "James Randi EDUCATIONAL Foundation", and you're welcome.
On the other hand, people find you admirable, and nominate you for awards, because, confronted with me just saying "No, you're wrong", you took it on yourself to look at the data, you went back to the primary texts to find out what Darwin actually said, and having found out that you were wrong, you said so. Now if everyone thought like that, the skeptics would have won, we could all gp and do something else, and the JREF could spend the $1,000,000 on a victory party.
So although your thread of apology sems a bit over the top, it reminds us all how we should behave.
Welcome again.

Please watch your words. I'm sorry if I gave offense: I think you may have mistunderstood me. I was trying to give an impersonation of what Newcastle folk would say if you went there and then drank an imported bottled lager such as Budweiser.
I wasn't trying to have a go at you. I gather from your posts that you are a newcomer to Britain, so could we just chalk this up to cultural misunderstanding?

Well, if I were you and felt that someone has an ulterier motive (if that is what you mean by a troll), then I could always report it to moderators.
Like in our daily life, we get people who we agree with and others we donot. Same here. You could always choose to refuse to read a member's post. But then it may not be very healthy if we did not learn something new in a forum?
Just to save me going through the posts by these users, how do you suspect that they are trolls?

The mods are well aware of these. To my knowledge if they break the forum rules the mods act, but you can post any trollish lunacy and stick around as long as you obey forum rules. Kumar has been here for over 2 years trolling the same homeopathic garbage.

Actually, ManLondon, some explanation is due:
A difference of opinion, particularly around here, is generally considered a good thing. Most people can and do respect that. Even those who accept homeopathy as a "science" can and are welcomed.
As to what you're saying about understanding the gist and flow of some posts, that comes with the territory, particularly on a board where you have people posting from all around the world, and where you encounter folks for whom English is not their native tongue. That, too, does not make someone a troll.
What makes someone a troll is the patent refusal to listen or respond to established fact. Trolls are the folks who will try and tell you that failure in the lab does not mean it doesn't work. (Actually, failure in the lab is generally considered abject failure, mainly because of the controls that are in place during such endeavors.) When you point out to a troll that their facts are wrong, or that their sources are questionable, they become abusive. They've been known to engage in spamming and hoaxing, and a few on this board have actually gone after the mods and admins. (Genghis Pwn is a prime example. Just. Don't. Ask.)
Trolls want things their way, the consequences be damned, and they are more than willing to belittle and denigrate those they deem to be (for lack of a better term) "unworthy." If Fowlsound has little regard for them, keep in mind that Kumar pronounced Fowl's cancer "incurable," and did so without any medical knowledge, or even a basic familiarity with the particulars of Fowl's case. A significant number of us have fallen under assault by certain trolls, to include Jedi Knight and others, so if some of us seem a little gun-shy, it has little to do with you, but much to do with past abuses.
Having said that, all I can add is relax, and enjoy. You sound like you'll fit right in with this unruly mob. Stop by Phil's Pub, check out the Top Ten List, don't hesitate to get involved in discussions that catch your interest, and by all means, have fun. If you've got a question, serious or otherwise, don't hesitate to ask. Trust me: the natives are friendly, even if they do dress funny.

Thanks very much for the information. Great thoughts!

Hello yrreg,
We notice you haven't yet posted on our forums. Why not make your first post today by saying hello in the Welcome new posters! Introduce yourselves here! thread? Or start an interesting thread in General Skepticism, Science, Education, or any other forum and become an active member of our community!
I had a very hard time trying to get validated as a bona fide member of the forum. See if this post comes out; since until this post, if it does come out, I have been rebuffed again and again with the message that the username or password used were not correct or valid, or the administrator has not yet approved my registration, or that my posting access has not yet been granted, etc.
If this post does come out, then I am glad.
But, may I just make this request of the JREF people operating the forum here, please see if some hostile agents or some unconstructive procedures are responsible to render registration and validation and approbation so very difficult and frustrating to achieve with JREF.
I even had to send emails to the management here to finally, I hope so now, be able to post -- when in fact I had successfully registered on November 22, 2005 (it's now November 28, 2005), as per notice appearing right after my registration that my registration had been successful, and to expect an email in order to activate, etc.; and I had done everything again and again as per instructions, most faithfully.

See that message above this current one I am writing?
I am so glad that I have finally succeeded in posting at least the above message.
Let's see if this one also come out.
Then also I will start a thread inquiring about skepticism as applied to the beliefs and observances of Buddhism -- because I notice that so much of critical studies have been made and are still being made on Christianity, but almost nothing on Buddhism -- and I am curious.

But, may I just make this request of the JREF people operating the forum here, please see if some hostile agents or some unconstructive procedures are responsible to render registration and validation and approbation so very difficult and frustrating to achieve with JREF. Hostile agencies are involved. We call them "computers". When they've driven us all insane, they'll take over the world.
Seriously, the JREF just buys (or hires, or something) the software that drives the forums, so there's not much they can do about it.
Welcome to the forums now you're finally here. Your thread on Buddhism looks interesting.

Figured I would take a bit of time on here. It will take me a while to sort through alot of what is on the site. My particular interests are Ramthas school of enlightenment/ the film What the bleep? and use of LGAT within government. Please feel free to contact me should you have any info on these items that you think I may not be aware of already.
By the way, I have seen alot of the use of WOO and woo wooers. I can imagine what this means, however I would like the definition of a woo.
Personally, it sounds a bit demeaning and seems to set up an us and them mentality, please correct me if you feel I am wrong. I would hope this site does more then preach to the choir.
I would hope others who have the courage to have their beleifs challanged, questioned and are willing to engage in a conversation about that.will find a welcoming voice here on the site.

I think you will find that most people here are happy to have their "beliefs" challenged however those doing the challenging will need to present evidence of what they claim.
There are some very smart and well educated people here, present them with theories and credible evidence and you will get some great replies.

Hi Silly,
I was not really speaking about the majority of the posters I have seen on here, I was speaking of others such as the ones in the "you create your own reality movement".
So, My theory is , should they see that their ideas, beliefs, and thoughts are being looked at and responded to in a condesending manner that this can drive them furthur into the shell they have built around themselves.
Not that I think that many will be purusing this site very often, but if there was more acceptance of them as human beings first, a more productive dialogue might commence. Hence my comment on the woo wooers.
By the way, can you give me the definition of a "woo"??
thanks for your comment

That's Mr. Silly to you. :) ;)

The problem is that most of the people I've seen here who fall into the "woo" category are way past any sort of rational discussion. They suffer under the illusion that they are the lone voice of truth and all others are wrong. In short, they are deluded and are not receptive to rational argument. In a politically correct world they probably should be humoured and treated nicely but it's much more fun to poke them with sharp sticks. Human nature I guess.
By the way, can you give me the definition of a "woo"??
thanks for your comment
I saw a good explanation of that in a thread recently but I can't remember where. Try the search function, that will probably turn something up.
Basically it's used as a noun or adjective to describe somebody or something that falls into the nonsense or supernatural category like faith healing or homneopathy or the like.
For instance, if you were to tell me that you could cure any of my ailments, (should I have any), by projecting your energy at me, or the like, I would label you as a woo.

After a CNN report on Indigo Children made me reach out to Randi, and after ABC presented its "me too" November Sweeps story, my message to Randi was included in his weekly column (ABC TV Stumbles Again). I then decided to join this interesting forum.
I'd thought of starting a thread on the Indigos but somehow feel their claim's stupidity is self-evident. Then again, stupid claims frighten me because I have little faith that most people can see how stupid they are.
My Life as a Skeptic:
I have one or two mental snapshots of going to Sunday School as a toddler, but my parents dumped their Baptist upbringing to become agnostic (Mom) or aetheist (Dad). My dad would openly ridicule my Baptist Minister grandfather at family gatherings. Grandpa thought that God may have planted dinosaur fossils just to confuse us.
I nevertheless embraced every imaginable supernatural idea as I grew up. Not so much from gullibility, but from a sincere search for truth. It really feels like supernatural stuff is real, so I investigated it all, assuming something to be true unless proven false. As a teen and young adult I tried out Astrology, Silva Mind Control, ESP, Devil Worship, Born Again Christianity, Tarot, Ouiji, Behaviorism, and many others.
At the beginning of my midlife crisis (cue Energizer bunny) I started to write a book on where I believed the edge of science was -- the threshold where scientific method stopped and the deeper truths resided, needing a more advanced type of science to penetrate.
My current refinement of skepticism, my test, is "if this might be completely imaginary, I'll assume it's false."
James Randi has been one of my heroes since childhood. I clearly remember his appearance on Sonny Fox's Wonderama show from New York. He did a beautiful rope trick that I figured out right away and can still do for people. I watched every one of his $10,000 challenge shows (in the 70's or 80's) and still remember some of the acts, like the guy who turned pages of a phone book with his mind power by blowing on them. One of my favorite Randi projects was when he got a faith healer to cure the disease of the female reproductive organs of a man in drag.
Because of today's war on science, it seems more important than ever to support Randi's mission.
Thanks in advance for welcoming me.

Hi Hank, welcome to the forums!
Los Alamos, eh? Isn't that where they make UFOs and stuff?
Seriously though, that sounds fascinating - what do you do there?
Some of this, a bit of that, most of it involving software doing numerical analyses. Nothing too exciting, but a reasonable place to work.
Cheers,

A Finnish newcomer reporting in. Although I've known of Mr. Randi for quite some time now, I became aware of the JREF website only about a month ago, after a vague Google search lead me to the archived weekly commentary about the Shakti stones and other audiophile nonsense. Have browsed the commentary archives through since then, and decided to join the forums.

Hello, everyone.
I first stumbled upon the JREF site several years ago while searching the net for comprehensive evidence against "free energy" that I could present to a friend who was completely taken in by Dennis Lee. Although no documentation I could find convinced him of the fallacy of "free energy" my first visit here did get me thinking about thinking critically. And I thank you.
Not long after my first search for reason, another friend was certain that homeopathy was viable and scientific in nature. I returned here for evidence and read discussion on the forums and found links to Quackwatch and CSICOP and my friend's mind was changed. Thanks again.
I was dimly aware at that time that many people believed in strange and unreasonable things, but I had no idea of how deeply these waters ran until I started frequenting this site. In the past two years I have read Randi's commentary every week and have spent hours and hours exploring this forum and following your links to some really informative and entertaining things.
So, no more lurking for me. I'm now a poster.

Hello Everybody (is Everybody properly written with capitol E?)
I have some time being part of this forum, to be truth I feel mostly like a vouyerist (seeing trough everybodies life's and discussion), because everytime i feel it would be something worthy to post, someone has already made that point (and in a much more competent way I might add).
Anyway, I'm here to introduce myself, I'm from Monterrey, Mexico a dull small city of 4 million inhabitants up in the north, I study the fifth year of medicine.. (yes i've seen dead people, yes I have attended a delivery and yes I've assisted a major surgery), and we and some really good friends, most of them of the National Math Olimpyad are trying to start an skeptic association in this belief crowded country.. so I guessed JREF was the natural part for me to end...
Any comments, suggestions, good jokes.. well.. bad jokes also... are welcome.. and If you think that by some strange coincidence in this forgotten blue planet I can help you with any information.. be confident in writing me :)
(my areas are medicine, psichiatry, travelling :D, and little of languages... )

I would like to 1st thank everyone who contributed to creating the wonderfull set of threads I read over the past 2 days, before I registered here. I laughed, and even snorted like a pig a couple times. I was tempted to guffaw a few times, but was able to hold it in.
And I would also like to thank the critical thinkers for their contributions also!
I would also like to thank the admin who manualy pushed my 2nd registration attempt through after the automated system took it upon itself to delete my application.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and for providing things worth reading.
Well, you definitely weren't reading my posts then. Welcome aboard.
Oh, and try not to hold in your guffaws. I think that may cause an aneurism.

Is this the 12 step program for people that are not afflicted with religious beliefs?God bless you Stephen. When you open your heart to God, he will be waiting for you.
Of course if you don't open your heart to God, you will BURN for all eternity.
So there you have it.
Oh, and welcome to the forums.

Snorting like a pig is a popular pastime here. It's right up with poo-flinging and protesting the suspension/reinstatement of random posters.
Oh and Spidey was right about guffaw retention. It's not good for you.

One thing I havn't been able to figure out yet... I see it all over the place.. I google it and find it all over the place... but I can't yet come up with a definition!!!
What does woo, or woo-woo mean?
And thanks for the welcomes.
JLam

The woowoo credo can be found here (http://www.watchingyou.com/woowoo.html). That should explain things.
Molinaro
7th December 2005, 12:56 PM
Ok.. I already read that. Therefore, the answer must be that woo, and/or woo-woo are not acronyms or abreviations.
Thanks, I guess.

Actually, you have a lot to do with my being here. I've been aware of this site for some time, as my husband is very active here. I refer to him as my husband, but of course we all realize that if he were literally my husband then all of Western civilization would immediately collapse.
Your message about applying for a civil union with your partner was very well written, and it appealed to me.
I've mentioned that my husband is an existing member here, but I have not mentioned his name yet because I don't want to embarass Terry.

Hi everyone. I have been reading the JREF Swift newsletter since '98 or so (definitely by '99) and have lurked on the forum since ??? ...sometime after that. I have even got around to donating to the foundation in the past, but for some reason, I only bothered to register on the forum this year. I guess that I could be better served reading the great posts and ideas without having to really contribute. Kind of selfish, but not out of character.
Well, now that I am out of the closet, I am really planning to post from time to time now, honest.

Hello, I'm an Automotive engineering graduate, currently trying to engineer myself a job. In my spare time (which is all my time at the moment) I enjoy reading (fiction/science/history/cereal boxes), films, playing guitar and bass, computer games and most of all going to the pub.
Just wondering how I go about getting a signature.
Nice to meet you all.

Welcome to you Johnny, you should get on well with a lot of the regulars here given you description.
As for a signature, go the the top of the screen and click "User CP". In that window you should find a sidemenu that says 'edit signature' and will give you a box to write in.
Have fun.

Rockin' Rick

Greetings Earthlings (could be a bad asumption on my part)
My name is Eric "Rockin' Rick" Ferguson.
I've been following along with the JREF for some time. I've been skeptical about most things for about as long as I can remember. I'm a Libertarian (capital L) and ran for State Rep. here in Illinois in 2002 and will likely run for office again.
I'm the chief (and only) engineer of a Chicago market UHF televsion. By no means am I a physics expert or math wiz, but I do have an educational background in electronics and a load of practical experience with the subjects of video and audio. I'm the guy that puts stuff together and makes it go, takes it apart and fixes it when it doesn't. My broadcasting history goes back to 1989 working in radio. I've done it all, been on the air in every shift, cued up vinyl, production director, program director, news reporter, even sales, today it's engineering.
So a few days ago upon stopping by this site I saw the report on the remarkable GSIC-20 and immediately thought to myself "here we go again." You see I remember when the CD first came around commercially, I had one of the earliest players. (still works well) About a year after a couple of guys developed a special blue-green marker that when written around the edge of the disk it would make it sound better. This was of course utter non-sense. And the scams continued. Then after I read about this "chip" I started browsing the challenge forum and read about Michael Anda the so-called audio critic. That was it, I had to join. I read through the whole thing, and something stuck out at me. Why was the guy so adamant about being able to treat his discs with Walker Vivid? So I looked into it. What a joke. I could not believe how many bogus products and half-truths I found. And so I looked further, I had no idea that there is a whole gaggle of these Hi-Fi dealers and product makers catering to any sucker willing to buy. I would love to see these turkey's brought down.
At any rate, thanks JREF and all of you here for being here. I'd be happy to assist the JREF and anyone else dismantle these scams. I'll offer whatever knowlege and insight I can.
Thanks again.

I'm a 24 year old "Icelandic" male. I'm currently living in Germany, and used to live in China, Holland and England before. Going back "home" soon, though, *shudder*
Since i just graduated at uni I'm looking for a good Masters program in the near future, probably something to do with international relations or development assistance. I've been a freelance journalist for over a decade (long story) and hope to eventually do it full time, before or after finishing my studies.
Long time reader and fan of JREF, you guys rock, etc.
Oh, and it seems everywhere I have lived was plagued by some ridiculous pseudoscience or superstition. If it's not chi in China it's homeopathy in Germany or psychics in Iceland. Is the whole damn world infested with irrationality or what?
Anyway, good to be here, I'll stop ranting now.

Anyway, I'm 46 years old, London Ontario, separated, 3 kids, 1 grandkid, not nearly as educated as I'd like to be, underemployed and overwhelmed.

Various theories for the censoring of "dirty words" on these fora have been put forward over the years. Choose your favourite...
a) Naughty words make Randi's head explode
b) Jeff can't figure out how to turn the auto-censor off
c) Darat is a nazi
d) Something to do with ninjas
e) It's Lisa Simpson's fault
f) 1,694,330,912,345,003rd sign of the Apocalypse

It's actually very simple and was explained to me in one sentence last night after I launched into an unholy tirade against the horriffic practice of banning swearing:
"We want the forum to be accessible to schools for educational purposes, filters block sites with swear words."
Me: "Oh... ok then. That's great. I'll go away now."

I guess this is a re-introduction. I've been a member for over 4 years, but stopped posting (for various reasons, none of which make much sense) a couple of years ago. I still read the commentary every week and browse through the forums (fora?) every chance I get. I'm trying to get things back together so that I can spend more time here.
Anyway, I'm 46 years old, London Ontario, separated, 3 kids, 1 grandkid, not nearly as educated as I'd like to be, underemployed and overwhelmed.
In short, I'm the cranky old fart that you've been trying to avoid all of your lives.
It's good to be back.
You and I will get along just fine.
I am a cranky slightly younger fart that they avoid around here.
ETA: Welcome back!

Well. I'm okay with that. If it means that this forum is accessible to schools for educational purposes, I'm all for it. Not that it's going to make our kids smarter, or more apt to use critical thinking, but it can't hurt, right?
I'll just shut the f up.
Kids, do your homework. And no matter what the stickers in your science books say, "Intelligent Design" is not science.

Yeah, as much as it pains me as a rational person to have to edit my posts to remove "questionable words" (just look at the Penn and Teller episode about swearing to see how ridiculous a practice this really is, the sentiments always remain despite euphemisms) - I respect the need to reach the schools.
I'd like to think that even if JREF reaches only a handful of kids it´s still worth it. Their lives (and the lives of those around them) will, hopefully, be made better by a critical and rational approach to the outside world. The less kids get suffocated under mattresses or denied insulin, the better - even if it's a statistically small number of kids, lives have still been touched and potentially saved.

BTW, I've also often wondered what fowl sounds it is you make . . . or are they FOUL sounds?

Another bloody Australian--shouldn't you be out beating up Lebanese-Australians? :p :p ;) :D
Anyway, welcome to the Forum and enjoy comparing notes with all the other cat-owners here.
Thanks for your gracious welcome.
We live opposite a Lebanese family in a court. Their cat does battle with ours, both felines being males.
So far, the score is 50/50. Don't really expect it to change.
Apart from that, they're a "typical" Aussie family in that they've been sucked deeply into the consumerist ethos that prevails here.
Underneath it all, I can't tell the difference.

Yeah, but what about on top of it?
Slightly more seriously, it's encouraging to see more Oz skeptics coming out of the woodwork. We have a relatively secular society here but there are some worrying trends in certain areas of federal politics. :(

Hello Everybody,
I'm a lurker of fairly long standing on this site. I used to be a skeptic about "paranormal" occurences. I'm not anymore, however, I'm not pushy about it. I remain skeptical of people and their claims for the most part and I just have my own reasons for believing the things I do now. I hope to join in on some of the debate around here sometimes. The posts are interesting and very informative and there's a lot of great humor.
The basics about me are: I live in snowy Michigan, I'm a mom of three, an organic plant grower and yes, I read Tarot cards for people. That oughta be enough to get some feedback. Thanks for reading my blurb and wishing you all something to believe in at the end of your quest, Helianthus

Avheinda is right. In the sooper-secret mod orders even we are only allowed to travel those alleys in pairs.
This came about after several moderators disappeared and were never heard from again.

Goodness me, this is nerve-wracking!
Um, well.
*ahem*
I found the site a few months ago, and have since read my way faithfully through all the commentaries, the log of applicants, quite a lot of the forums...
I don't really know what else to say. I consider myself a skeptic (actually, scratch that, I am one), despite having a love for all the pretty fictions about ghosts and psychics and alien abductions and so forth. I may not have a technical background, but I can spot flim-flammery pretty well. Of course, though, I'm smart enough to know that I can be fooled.
