View Full Version : The historic and original "Welcome new posters! Introduce yourselves here!" thread
Girl 6
23rd April 2003, 10:59 AM
This thread was getting rather long and several new Members have been put off posting because of its length. So we've started a new live thread for all new introductions (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=64023) and in future we'll keep that thread a more manageable and less off-putting size by regularly copying posts from there into here.
Generally speaking, Diezel usually takes this on. But, he's been asleep at the wheel while I continue with my quest for world domination. :D
Anyway, I want to extend a warm welcome to the new posters to the board. I've noticed that we've had quite a few of them post already. But, if you wouldn't mind, please take this opportunity to introduce yourselves and tell us what lead you here. Also, don't pass up a chance to criticize the management. ;)
It's nice to see the new faces and soon, the new avatars! Welcome everyone!!

I echo G6's welcome. As about 144 folks join each month, I think I can safely say that's gross.
And please don't forget the "new person dollar fee" where each new person sends one dollar to the forum administrator (Girl6, shut up...they are buying it...I'll be rich rich RICH)
We aim for insight, banter, great discussion, and learning. And donuts. We like donuts.

I think Hal may be taking his historical charactet reenactment a bit too seriously! 144 dollars may have been "rich" a couple of hundred years or so ago!

I guess I would be one of those new posters so I will introduce myself.
I go by the name Nyarlathotep (a name I've used since my pre-internet computer BBS days), but my real name is Ron. I am a (Currently very bored) computer programmer in the wilds of Nevada (actually Carson City)
I post occasionally and often lurk on alt.atheism and I think a link someone posted on that newsgroup lead me here (actually I think it lead me to another site that links here) several months ago. I've been lurking for quite a while but only recently have begun posting.
Anyway, I rather like this board and have begun to prefer spending my time here rather than alt.atheism because I find the, shall we say, "signal-to-noise" ratio to be much more to my liking
It will be nice to meet all of you

Hi New People!
Don't worry about some of the people who post here (no names mentioned, but see above). JREF have a contract with the US government that allows a small number of deranged people to leave messages here as part of their treatment.
DO NOT PANIC!
Go to the "user cp" button at the top of the page, press, then look for "edit ignore list" and follow the instructions.
Good luck!:D :D :D

23rd April 2003, 01:12 PM
I guess I will introduce myself as well.
I am Torment. I used to post at a different discussion board on a different site, and one day someone else who posted there regularly posted a link to here. (Darkcobra)
Long story short my previous board went to crap and became overwhelmed with idiocy, fad topics, and trolls. I couldn't put up with it anymore and remembered how intelligent the people here had been in the topic DC had linked to so long ago.
I hope to add to the debates here, but I probably won't be getting too involved for awhile. Most of the people on this board seem to be on a whole different level intelligence wise as the people who post on my former board. I will actually have to think out my posts a lot more here if I want to keep up, which is fine by me.

Ya know Girl6, if you changed the title of this thread to "New members, introduce yourself here" (or something like that), you might get a better response.
I've already met everyone that's posted so far, with the exception of Torment.

I guess I'm sort of new (been here a month? or so, don't post much). Just posting a lot more than usual today because I'm close to getting an avatar. Yay me. Usually I prefer reading and thinking here to actually writing much, as I tend to both read and write too quickly, which means I make mistakes or read something wrong (see peta topic for a prime example of that, LOL!)
I work for the government and it's pretty miserable. I don't even get a window. :(

The only time our place rocked recently, was when a 30mm armor piercing incendiary round escaped the firing range down the hill. It ended up in the tail light of someones parked car.
Skinny was not pleased with the folks down the hill. :(

Hi all
My name is Merrick, I been aware of the Forum here for quite a while, but only recently have had regular access to a computer.
Right now I'm just doing some temp work until I go back to school. Hopefully I'll be able to go to Columbia for film, but I don't think I'll be able to afford the tuition, unless of course my grants come through.
Other then wanting to go to school for acting/directing, I play way too many video & role-playing games, when I'm not reading of course.
So far I've really enjoyed all of the discussions here, and hope to contribute much more in the future.

Nyarlathotep is a sort of demon-god (it's kind of complicated if you have never read the books) from the works of H.P. Lovecraft. I have noticed a Kthulhu running around here too and tht name comes from the same source. THough in Lovecrafts books it's spelled Cthulhu.

Why show yourself off? Isn't it more attractive to be a mystery to people.
Anyway, my goal is to show how retarded people can be, either by making an example of myself or by exhibiting any dufuses who achieve shameful fame.
I'll also offer kindly advice to suffering souls, though I know they won't often listen.
My third purpose is to gain recognition for admission to any of the more respected secret societies. Free Mason will do just fine, I don't need to go Majestic 12 just yet. (Then it would be Majestic 13... there's no need to ruffle feathers like that. I assume all kinds of secret members are reading this right now, biting their lips. PLEASE let me in. I totally won't tell anyone. I promise!)
If I find any other reason to stick around, then I'll be sure and let all the all of you know about it.

Not to mention any url's but it's named after a famous explorer and evolutionist... And if any of them are reading here, please note JREF supports uploading of small images, a feature I've asked for for a long time.
JREF seems like a great forum. I find a little hard keeping up with the high post rates but that's not anyone's problem but mine. :(

Getting back to the introducing yourself part of this thread....
As you can see by my avatar and ID, one of my hobbies is refereeing soccer matches. The best part of that is having the parents yell at you. It's especially fun when you know they have never read the Laws of the Game.
As a librarian, I consider it my duty to make sure everyone posts quietly. THERE ARE PEOPLE TRYING TO STUDY AROUND HERE, YOU KNOW!
Now on to the drinking water part....
I live near the Saint John River, which is rising now and tragically flooding 2 soccer fields. However, we get our city water supply from springs. That way, we don't have to worry about chemicals from those pulp mills upstream.

Hey all. I have been lurking on the board for a while now, and have started posting on recently. Mostly in the puzzles forum, but I'm branching out.
I don't post on any other boards. My Alias, like the other poster said, is one that I have used ever since my BBS days. It has no special meaning aside from the fact that when I was 15 it sounded 'whicked cool'. I have used it all over, so if you see it some where else, it might be me.
Broken down it’s...
zen – I’m sure I don't need to define that.

Nice to see another spouse here. I'm beginning that there maybe a need for a JREFer's spousal support group. Perhaps we could get shadowman to join us. Lookout TAM here we come!:D
My avatar and name were chosen beause the character looks just like my youngest daughter.

Real name Jeff Starr - born and raised in Wisconsin, working for corporate America in rural Ohio.
I'm here because I have a lot of family into the woo-woo stuff. Some of them are currently on a waiting list with John Edward to talk to my uncle and sister (I challenged Freda in 'Paranormal to contact' my uncle for me). So I do take this stuff very personally.
I'm here because I find every subject I argue with them about discussed on these boards. And the level of intelligence dealing with it is amazing. And not just the skeptics, there are some defenders of (what I consider) nonsense here who bring up some great and refreshingly new ideas.
Unrelated to this, I have no clue how to set up an Avatar, if someone would be kind enough to point me to a thread that tells me how.
Thanks,
Jeff

hello, Starrman! To get an avatar, you need at least 50 posts. When you're ready, go to the Forum Help section and there's a thread on how to set up avatars there.

Actually, I work 3 days, off 3 days. Every 4th week I'm off for a week:D
Most of my experiences as a medic are either painful or offensive as I tend towards a very dark sense of humor about my job. Perhaps someday, when I am sufficiently intoxicated to not care, I will start a 'people are so stupid' thread;)

Well, am I a new member? I've been posting here for nearly a year and a half, and lurked for about a year before that, yet have only managed 122 posts. Since there are people here introducing themselves who have posted more, I'll say hi too.
Hi too. :D
Anyone who's read any of my posts will pretty much know what I'm about. I'm a skeptic non-believer. I think believers are stupid, but they just don't realise it.
I'm from England. I'm a juggling, unicycle riding, fire breathing, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, drinking, smoking kinda guy. I don't have a lot of free time so my posting here is sometimes a little erratic. I don't ignore people, if I don't reply, it's because I can't. Sorry
Anyway, to all the newer newbies, welcome!

Hi people!
I'm new, just registered a couple days ago, and this is my second post.
Still, I've lurked on and off for quite a while, so I'm not going to fall for the "new person dollar fee", hal. Sorry.
Oh, and I like anime and my computer.
My primary operating system is Windows XP, despite the best efforts of some of my friends to make me use FreeBSD.
My favorite anime is Kyuuketsuki Miyu (http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,338,dukhmf,vampire_princes.html), though Inuyasha (http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,11,wpskdo,inuyasha.html) is a close second.
I'm currently playing Hearts of Iron (http://www.heartsofiron-game.com/), a deep strategy game, and RTCW:ET (http://www.splashdamage.com/), a fps. The forum at the later is where I got my current signature
Also, of course, I'm a skeptic and have been a fan of Randi since I read Flim-Flam! a number of years ago.

Well, Missy, just use the QUOTE and /QUOTE pair tags surrounded by square brackets. Or, the easiest thing you can do is just click on the quote button from the post that you want to quote.

Reminds me of a time I tried to stop by a local Radio Shack. There were two signs prominently displayed in the front window. The first one read:

The second read:

Greetings. I actually registered here 2 years ago with an underscore in my username, but I was all lurk and no post at the time. I blame the underscore. It was clearly dragging me down. That's why I have now reregistered without it. Either that, or I just plain forgot I already had an account. I prefer the former explanation as it has the bouquet of a principled stance instead of the stench of brain flatulence.
In any case, it's a pleasure to be here and I look forward to much ******* shooting.

Leroy, I'm assuming the woman who directed you here is religious and you're not? If so it was very open minded of her to suggest this site.
She and I are both on the fence concerning religion. Neither of us will step foot in a church. Both of us have rejected all of the religions in our area(s). But we both feel that there is some kind of higher authority - she feels she has experienced enough evidence to believe this - I think my beliefs stem from being raised to believe in it.
I question people about why they believe in a god. Most do because that is the way they were raised. It causes me to question my own ideas, yet I can't ignore the stories from friends who have had what they call 'religious experiences.' Some of these stories I can toss aside, others I find very interesting.
I guess I could say I am open minded - curious - and sometimes angry about religion.

Been reading these posts for a couple weeks now. Some are a hoot, like the guy who wants his friend to offer a rebuttal at his funeral if the eulogy is not quite up to code! Ha! Some are so insightful and succinct that it scares me. Almost all are entertaining and instructive. All in all, a great place to spend time while eating a cheese sammich.
As an introduction, I should mention that I live in Woodstock, New York....( yes, THE Woodstock, where the '69 festival never happened) the home of aging hippies and warm beer. What a loony bin this place is! You see every kind of goofy alternative new age crapola there ever was. It boogles the mind to listen to the broccoli channelers, sacred path foot massagers, rebirthers, UFO abductees, Karmapa devotees, and the born agains. Ya gotta love 'em! Just walking down Tinker Street gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling. I came here from Detroit about 10 years ago and took up residence at a Zen monestary from which I was kicked out for refusing to pretend I was Japanese. It's an interesting story if anyone is interested.
Anyway, I was led to this site after I saw JR on a show not too long ago and looked in. Guess I'll hang for a bit. Greetings to all!

My name is Manfred. As you newbies will soon discover, I am often misdiagnosed with SAAADD(Super Advanced Adult Attention Deficit Disorder). That and ascii turrets. Whoooooop! S4l7! I like to talk about myself, or failing that, people who resemble me. My favorite color is grape, and my favorite flavor is purple. I stand 5'9" tall people if I must, but I prefer not to. I love my cat, but if my family were starving, he'd have to take one for the team. I drive a car. I'm fatter than I was, and thinner than I have been. It's been 3 years, 4 months, 15 days, and 4 hours since I last considered how long it had been since I did something. I squeeze the toothpaste right from the middle, consequences be damned. At the age of three, I wrestled to the ground a small bear. I'm a beeraholic. I'm not religious, but do believe some religions are inherently better than others. Any religion that doesn't allow an all-pulled pork diet is inferior to any that does. I could go for a cheeseburger right now, as long as I didn't have to go for it. I love you all, except you and you.
*in the above introduction, 'wrestled to the ground' should be replaced with 'was trampled by', and 'small bear' should be replaced by 'large cat'. Everything else is semi-factual as presented.

G6 If you can't change your identity every once in a while, what's the use of having one at all?
I found all these nice people hanging out in the Scandinavian forum over in Flame Wars, and was inspired to go back and read the Kalevala, the very fine epic poem of Finland, wherein is found the enigmatic Kullervo, sometimes claimed to be the mythological relative of Samson and archetype/model for Hamlet. He comes to a rather nasty end. My avatar is a detail from the painting Curse of Kullervo by Gallen-Kallela. http://www.gallen-kallela.fi/akseli/4_tradition.html

Ok, so it is kind of strange to introduce myself because I've lurked for a long time... to wit...
I remember when the JREF forum was run on phpBB
I remember when Bigfig first posted about ghosts in her house and everyone took her seriously... and the aftermath...
I remember when Pillory's sig was 'this post will be deleted' (or something like that)
I watched with interest when Girl6 (?) bounced an idea for a jref get-together that became TAM
I recall the day when everyone got avatars...
I remember many times having the urge to go to the mall and lol!
Claus vs Luci? Oh, I guess that is still going on, some things never change I suppose.

Yeah. I'm an anime fan I guess. It's one of the things that led me to live where I do now. I wanted to be a comic book artist for a long time, before my dad talked me out of it by telling me that only the best make money. So, I went to film school instead. :D

I was supposed to leave it alone until it fell off but it got caught on the carpet (don't ask) and kind of ripped halfway off. Isn't that cool? Anyway just thought I'd share. I think its really amusing how this board for newbies got hijacked by veterans. You guys are so enthusiastic..aawww....I am vastly enjoying all the intelligent conversation to be found here, but I'm having a frustrating time trying to join it. For one thing, I can't seem to edit my profile; when I try it just tells me that I have to login over and over again. This is also what happens when I click on the links in my emails that are supposed to take me to replies. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks

Don't mind the veteran posters, jewel. They like to hijack threads all of the time! ;) Besides, it's always nice to get re-introduced to them. :)
I hope that I bump into some of your posts once you sort out the issues you are encountering.

Greetings! This seems to be a haven of sanity, unlike The Midden, which is awash with Muck, all quite, quite mad. There is no "s" in the plural of "Muck",by the bye. That is because we seem to be a mass noun, unlike our cousins the MuckaMucks, who are of course a count noun.

Greetings from the Alternate Dimension. I've been reading the Forum but can no longer see the influence of my P-Zombie minions. This cannot continue. What's the fun of a forum without the addition of some illogical constructs throwing their rotten flesh coated two cents in every once in a while? If you'd be kind enough to point out some of the more promising candidates for conversion, it will be greatly appreciated.

You are most welcome, my dear Lord. :) Yes, I was thinking that it would NOT be good to call Gentry because of the connotations.
However, I don't think I will call P-Zombie, Master! ;) That might go to his head!

Im from Maryland and my name is Ron. Im 39 years old and I have been studying so-called paranormal phenomenon for 11 years or so now. I have been studying photography , as a hobby for over 22 years.
I find that 99% of what I've examined has been either photographic error or explainable phenomenon but there is the 1%.
I enjoy reading, golf and fishing as well.
I consider myself a skeptic to some degree but am open to the unknown and seek truth .
I have no intrest in the million offered by JREF and feel that the challenge itself is a farce.
If the day comes that I do find scientific proof of life after death , in my lifetime, the million would be a moot point since I'd be offered 10 times that in grants.

G6,
Thanks for the welcome
Welcome to SpectorDetector! So, you're an "open-minded" skeptic? Please do tell!
I have seen many things in 11 years of research and investigation.
It's the normalcy and investigation techniques of the ghost hunters that concern me, for an unchallenged view can too easily and often does become the truth.
My goal as an investigator is to eliminate the explainable as a first step in approaching any so-called haunting. I do this through extensive questioning and interviews of the claimant. Asking me to check out an alleged sighting or haunting is quite a process. I take my time and am methodical in my study. Conditions , environment, emotional state of the claimant, nature of the contact, type of alleged contact, time of contact are just a few of many questions that must be answered.
There is a small percentage ( usually 1% or so after margin of error has been acounted for ) which remains unanswered. This 1% is what compells me to continue my search after all else has been considered.
One example of my work is as follows : ( this took place about 4 years ago)
I was contacted by a couple with a 9 month old baby who were under the impression that the baby was seeing the ghost of an American Indian spirit in their home ( the baby cried often and they thought this was the cause ). They got this impression after another so-called investigator (and group) did a check of the home and told the couple that this was the case.
The very first thing I informed them to do was to take the baby to his doctor for a checkup. I also told them that I would come take a look around only after they did this.
After a visit to the baby's doctor , it was found that the child had a case of colic ( i believe thats the spelling ) . I went to their home to speak to them about the findings of the other group and managed to convince them that they had been misinformed . The interview process alone was enough to convince them that they had indeed been dooped.
The whole thing absoutly sickened me .
I guess to sum it up, to believers Iam indeed a skeptic, and to skeptics in an openminded fool . Either way my convictions are mine . It is not my place to convince anyone of anything. I consider myself a learner more so than a skeptic or believer.
I am openminded but not so much so that my brain falls out. As a learner I am trying to find balance. I am comfortable with doing so . I engage in discussions for the sake of knowlege. We all have something to offer . My experience here on JREF has been interesting and pleasant for the most part. In any group there are always a few who will argue a point ,simply for the sake of the argument. I have dealt with these types of folks over the years and even they too are entitled to their opinions.
;)
I hope this sheds some light on your question

Hello, this is my second post here, I guess that qualifies me as a "newbie".
I stumbled upon this board a few weeks ago looking for documentation against a particular water scam (Penta hydrate). Turned out to be a pointless endevour, the people inhabiting this particular board are whacked beyond belief. It still amazes me to find people who are completely convinced that black is white and white is black. If anyone wants a good laugh check out the "askwaltstollmd" bulletin board. Why anyone would take health advice from an MD that had his license revoked is bewildering, akin to taking investment advice from some guy living under a bridge who lost everything on the stock market. Some of the loons on that board think everything is a conspiracy by big pharmaceuticals and the government, AIDs is not caused by HIV, monkey pox came from a rabies vaccine, etc, etc.
Anyway, I'm an industrial scientist (biochemistry background) who first got into this nonsense when we bought our first dog ~ 2 years ago. Having never owned one, I searched for and found dog internet boards to get health, diet, training information and was immediately surprised to find so many people on these sites convinced that conventional medical and nutritional advice is wrong and harmful, and therefore "alternative" medicine (holistic, homeopathic, etc) is the way to go. Suffice to say I disagreed and found myself banned numerous times from many boards! My morbid curiosity with this ludicrous health philosophy led me to other sites and boards on general health and nutrition, ultimately here. From what I've read in the last few weeks, this site appears to be an oasis of sanity in a world (at least on the internet) gone mad!

Cicap is an italian skeptical organization, inspired by Randi and made in late seventies by Piero Angela (a TV journalist), the biggest italian scientists and some illusionist. We does the same things that Csicop does in USA, but this is the country of Lotto so it's very hard for a skeptic to talk.
I've found this forum looking for some Randi's news :)
The most famous italian psychic is Gustavo Rol. He's dead, but people use his memory as a weapon against skeptics. Some people would like that Pope will make he saint! Of course, when he was alive, he refused to be tested by Randi.
Just try to spend a year in Italy, telling people that you are skeptic and you'll see how people could drive you crazy here :(
I could send some italian shoes, but by e-mail :D

Welcome to the forum, HerNibs!
Oooo... Could you please tell us a little bit about your screen name? I'm curious about it. :) Also, how did you find this forum? What made you finally de-cloak?

His Nibs (http://www.quinion.com/words/qa/qa-nib1.htm) is a well-known expression.
his is a mock title used to refer to a self-important man, especially one in authority. It is modelled after the pattern of references to the British aristocracy, such as his lordship.
So she merely changed the sex of it.
There's also a brand of candy anmed Nibs. They come in licorice and cherry flavors.

Hi!
Why the "Mad Linguist"? Is "Cunning Linguist" passé?

Thanks for the welcome. I was posting under the name BTom or BT at other boards where I got into trouble with the "alternative" medicine crowd. They ended up calling me BTox, which I found amusing. ;) I guess it could also be short for Botulinum toxin, but I don't have too many wrinkles...... yet!

Hello again,
Ok, HerNibs - when I was little I loved to dress up and behave like a princess (snotty, telling my little sister what to do, etc.) and my grandmother would refer to me as HerNibs. Later after I got married, my initials became part of that name.

Why did I uncloak? The woo wooiness of my surroundings. I needed like minded people. :)
I do have to confess that I did let myself become a bit intimidated by some of the postings here. Some of it went right over my head.

Ah, now there's a tale. Once upon a time, many moons ago, I was sitting in a very boring undergraduate lecture listening to the lecturer explain how a new, smaller unit of language had been discovered circa the 1960s. He decided to compare this to the way that the atom was once the fundamental unit of physics, but then smaller units were later found. In the same way, a level below the phoneme had been discovered in language.
I had an instant vision of linguists in labcoats pondering how to split speech particles in a grammatical reactor. This tickled me so much I had to doodle it in the margin of my lecture notes. Since this was clearly the sort of thing a Mad Scientist would get up to in his lab, I decided that only a mad linguist would get involved in such cutting-edge and plainly insane stuff. So I labelled my doodle "The Mad Linguist splits the phoneme!"
Since I'm currently working as a researcher in a linguistics department, it seemed an appropriate handle...
Aha! And which university, pray tell, was host to such groundbreaking lunacy?

Think of Dubya for another four years in the White House. That should send cold shivers down your spine...

Howdy. I'm new to this BB, but have followed the JREF website intermittently for some time. I enjoy freethought topics and people that truthseek! Back to lurking and occasionally blabbing........... :)
