At least 15 paintings, gold-plated firearms, ornamental knives, bonds and other items have been seized at airports in Washington, Boston and London in the last week, according to the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. Items seized in the military case were flown to Fort Stewart, Ga.

"These seizures should serve as a warning to anyone who would take advantage of the transition currently under way in the newly liberated Iraq," Commissioner Robert Bonner said.

Benjamin James Johnson, who worked as an engineer for Fox News Channel, is the only person charged or identified by the government.

Oh man, beaten to the thread! :)

I am not sorry to say I was laughing very hard when I read this. Wonder how Fox will cover this one! Apparently, they fired him.

Disclaimer- could have happened to anyone, etc, etc, not a reflection on the network. But still, a fun read...

I wonder about the cash value, and then the aesthetic value.

Gold-plated firearms sound a bit like the military equivalent of the Velvet Elvis painting (if they were bringing in a painting of Saddam on velvet, that would probably get a pass on the ground of sheer whackiness).

Can these people be tried for dubious taste?

They are covering the story, stating the facts, and yes he was fired after he admitted to Customs he was attempting to smuggle in various items.

The stuff in question was taken from one of Saddam's palaces.

I think Fox will manage ok.

" Charmion, call the fashion police! NOW!!!!

PS I was reading something written by Cicero the afternoon. He was critizing with his unique writting style, the paesants legionnaires who went to the Orient and showed with their behaviour where did they really come from...

Their lawyers will argue artfully in court that thieving, just like lieing, is allowable and protected by the constitution and required to stay competetive.

Its hard not to walk off with the booty, like the poor dogfaces that tried to skate with the cash they found. Not a defense, just an understanding that anyone of us would be sorely tempted.
Easy to say that (hypothetically) we would not do the same.

At first I thought about this too but then, I remembered that Press people keep reminding us that they don't do just a job but a ministry.

So, if you want to play the perfect and the hero you must behave as one.

S/he who is whithout sin cast the first stone.
"God is my judge."
Again, not an excuse, just understanding.

True, but still you have to put some limits to your understanding.Otherwise, I can justify you in a way that would create intense emotional reactions-the most repulsive crimes....

I would totally understand if a marine did this, I wouldn't make a comment.

But a Press Man? No Sir! No mercy to the people of Press.

They judge everybody they must play with the same rules.

Yes, but suppose the reporter is one of those who believes it is okay to acquire wealth by any means possible (i. e. conservative). Then their behavior would be totally consistant with their rules.

LOL Tricky! I was reading the other thread about the senator who has an opinion on the kind of sex people have in their houses and then I read this and suddenly came to my mind, the usual mean professor who exists in every college and existed in mine as well.

So, this man announced to us, by the first day he stepped in the amphitheater, that he would make half of us to quit the School of Law... In order to accomplish that, he gave us -as assignments -cases that they were "torturing" the american general public at the moment and had to do with crucial moral dillemmas:
" Is it legal for cats to pray to God" " Why conservatives can lead their partners to multiple orgasms and leftists can't? is the lack of multiple orgasms a legitimate reason for getting a divorce?" and things like that, vital dilemmas for the progress of humanity...

I didn't quit school, but I realized why this beautiful and very interesting country of yours has so many prophets and preachers...

Far be it form me to defend FoxNews but I don't blame them for this guy's looting. They did the right thing by firing him. I will not upbraind Fox for this one.
