View Full Version : What's wrong with emule and edonkey?

For about the last month or two, emule and edonkey have been virtually frozen for me. They connect fine, say there are millions of files out there, but then just sit and do nothing - maybe you get 1 kB/sec transfer up, but that's all. Even the search function doesn't work, just returns zero results.

I figured this was something wrong with my setup that was blocking their access to the net or something. I have had problems recently and have recently rebuilt the computer and "upgraded" to Win XP... but I've talked to two other people that have said the same thing has been happening to them lately. I googled and found some talk of a mysterious problem, but little detail.

Is anything going on? And/or, are there any better programs out there for P2P downloading? I gave Limewire a try but didn't like it...

Change your Client TCP and UDP ports, some ISP's block the defaults.

Also, keep your shared directory pretty empty, some servers will bounce you if you have to many shares.

Do you have Hi or Low ID? is the Windows Firewall configured to let Emule through?

Change the ports first though, it should help.

Kazaa yes, edonkey.. kinda yes.. emule, hell no.

Emule is alive and well. Besides for bittorrent i can't think of another p2p network that is as good.

I think he is trying to say that he is having the same problem with Kazaa.

And changing the ports works with that also, if you have a good Kazaalite mod that lets you switch them.

I still use EMule a lot, and connection is highly variable depending on how many clients have the file and whatever. Sometimes I get a solid 9-10 Kb/s, sometimes much less.

Bittorrents seem more reliable: I've never gotten a bad or corrrupt file with BT. But of course, searching is a bit more complex.

Yes and thx. As to the snobbery, blah blah blah whatever...before this problem, Kazaa has traditionally given me the best response when I query for MP3s (mostly what I use it for) and it's very easy to use. I don't need bells and whistles or a "higher tech" interface. Just gimme the files I want. It has done this well.

PS I tried Limewire and it was a joke ie extremely few hits. Interface is worse than Kazaa's too. So there. :)

uhhhhh follow-up: exactly what should I change the ports TO? My current one is 3640.

Also as I go out and tried just now, searches which used to generate tons of responses now generate very few...

Get an updated server.met (http://ed2k.2x4u.de/index.html) and make sure the search method is set to "Global (servers)". (warning: nudity banner)

Default ports are 4662 and 4672 but anything above 3000 (up to 2^16) will do.

What is your ID?

Do you have the latest version of Emule (0.46c)?

I use ports 2002/4372. just random # I put in, just use the "Test ports" Button on the screen"

Are you seeing anything on the Kad screen?

First this is all on Kazaa FYI. I uninstalled the others.

I put in 2000 as a random port # - don't notice much of a diff as yet -

I am an Idiot, I was talking about Emule.

For Kazaa, Are you using Kazaalite? or the Full-on spyware riddled Kazaa.

Cause If you are using the Regular Kazaa, there are a bunch or modules in it that could be doing all sorts of stuff.

The other problem could be that if you are using the latest Kazaalite, it isn't on the FastTrack network anymore, but the Gnutella network, which could account for your crappy searches.

Get Kazaa Lite K++ 2.4.3 (The KazaaLite K++ People were shut down by Sharman, the people who own Kazaa, But you can still find it around)

Edit: KAzaalite K++ 2.6.0 is fine also.

Yeah, I was talking about Emule as well. Is Kazaa still popular ? That's interesting.

Can you jump supernodes with that one?

Well I tried changing the ports ID numbers on emule. I used the test button and it said they tested okay.

Doesn't make any difference. It just sits there, saying it's connected but not doing anything. Some of the queued items show as blue, but it just says "waiting" no matter how long you leave it on. I have a queue of four people it says are downloading from me, but all of them have a zero transfer speed or darned close to it, and it stays that way.

eDonkey does the same thing. I downloaded Limewire, it does much the same thing; you get a little bit of an occasional file now and again - I'm talking a couple of kB - and then nothing. Most files don't even get that.

Well I'll be......I can. I'll tinker around w/that to see if it matters. Thx

Are you on dial-up, cable, DSL ?

www.torrentspy.com

Collects all torrents from most major sites. It's the only torrent site I ever use.

It's main advantage, besides collecting torrents from all over, is that since there most likely will be many of the same file, you can easily choose the one with the highest seed amount.

I highly reccomend this site.

Kazaa is the most dangerous program to install on your computer, bar none. It has nothing to do with snobbery, it's pure fact.

Try Ares Galaxy. It's free, it has no spyware whatsoever, has an easy interface (pretty much a Kazaa clone), and lots of stuff on it, especially mp3's.

But Bit Torrent rules supreme :)

I've noticed no problems w/Kazaa Lite (should have specified initially). Anyway I'll pass on pay sites. Why buy the cow when blah blah etc
