In the Bangkok Post (http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:-4i91j2zj0EJ:www.bangkokpost.net/News/17Nov2005_news53.php+thaksin+mercury&hl=en) we can finde the following:
PM's cryptic astrology just baffling
Thaksin: Looks to planet Mercury

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has again chosen to look to the heavens in responding to questions from the press.

"Mercury is moving backwards," Mr Thaksin responded after being asked by reporters about an announcement by First Infantry Division commander Maj-Gen Prin Suwannadhat that he would visit the offices of Managerdaily

Astrologers, meanwhile, were scrambling to try and interpret the prime minister's astrological comments.

"Mercury symbolises communication and is also the star of Mr Thaksin's birthday," said leading astrologer Phinyo Pongcharoen.

He said Mr Thaksin might benefit from saying nothing, or instead talk about more positive things.

"Moving backwards," he said, might mean he ought to review his previous actions and perhaps avoid starting anything new.

And today we have this in the news (http://www.themercury.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=284&fArticleId=3003203):
Thai prime minister's silence is not of this Earth

Bangkok: Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said yesterday he would not answer reporters' questions until next year because the alignment of the planets was not in his favour. "Right now, Mercury is perfectly aligned with my star. Mercury is no good, so . . . I'll wait until next year to talk," Thaksin said.

The astral advice might not be so bad, because Thaksin has come under pressure from the press to explain some new cases of corruption!

So Mercury is a star AND it's moving backwards? What millennium is this?

I'm not up on my physics, can anyone calculate the amount of force it would take to stop a planet and send it in the opposite direction?

Counter rotations, my friend. Mercury orbits the Earth affixed to another orbit which allows for quasi-eliptical movement and revolutions that appear backwards to us. Both the greater and lesser motions of this star are constant, so the directions are, from an objective position, always forward and therefore entirely possible according to your silly conjectural "physics." (And if something is possible, it must be true, as logic proves it!) Remember also that it is affixed to the walls of the celestial sphere, so it will also turn with the motion of the Heavens.

Not so much a statement of beliefs as it is a political evasion.
