View Full Version : Trip to Kennedy Space Center 30 Jan 03

25th September 2002, 03:33 PM
On Thursday, 30 January 2003, the day before The Amazing Meeting I plan to visit the Kennedy Space Center. I'll be leaving at 7 a.m. and returning in time to attend the JREF Internet Show. Anyone is welcome to join me -- please, the more the merrier -- but you may have to provide your own transportation.

I know Budddyh, Girl6 and Trish are interested. I'll have a car. Girl6 has dibs on either the back seat if she needs to lie down and nap, or the passenger's seat if not. I can take at least one more, two if no one's stretched across the back seat sleeping.

If you're interested please post here if you want to go. Please say if you need a ride, or if you will drive how many passengers you can take and what time you're leaving.

I think this will be FUN:D

Girl 6

It will be...

BIG FUN!

But, I'll be okay. I won't stretch out or anything. I'm trying to see about arriving at a decent hour the day before. So, don't worry about me. I can sleep sitting up if I have to. :D

So, who's interested in going?

Lisa

Eddie and I would like to go too. Don't know at this early date whether or not we'll have a car
If there's enough interest, and not enough transportation, want to chip in on a rental?

The Bad Astronomer
26th September 2002, 11:38 AM
I'm always interested, but I haven't made my travel plans yet so I don't know when I will be arriving. I will probably need to tag along with someone else as I don't plan (as yet) on renting on a car.

Lisa
26th September 2002, 01:00 PM
Of course we have to be back in time for the radio show! Otherwise, how will Girl 6 and I execute our planned takeover of the show.
BTW Phil, if you don't have a car, you can sit on Eddie's lap.:D

Trish

Unless I choose total insanity and decide to drive down - I will probably need a ride.

Trish, then ride with me and SkepticScott! I'll save you a seat, if that is okay with him. And even if you do decide to drive down, I'm sure it would be nice to get a ride after all of that. Anyway, we can figure all of this out when it gets closer to the date.

Yes, it's OK with me Girl6. I've PMed Trish and the only question is whether or not she'll bring her daughter. I can always say my car is full for now, then open it up for the last seat if there's only three of us.

My bride and I are planning on joining in the fun - we'll rent a car if we have to (and then I can control the music!!)

I'll get in the back seat with Girl6. We can make out to pass the time.

Just as a side note:
Eddie and I are planning on a vacation prior to the conference. We'll be going to the Dominica Republic. We're members of a vacation club, and we're allowed to bring guests. Cost is about $45/day/pp plus air fare. (It's an all-inclusive resort, so if you don't take any side-trips, you throw you're wallet in the room safe and hit the bar)
If anyone is interested, feel free to pm me.

I'm planning to visit the space center too. Lets see how many we have and rent enough cars accordingly.

We could even rent like a... well, not a coach (or a couch). But not a minibus either, well, maybe a minubus. What do you call those things in this country anyway?

Whatever it is that will fit 10 or so people, or however many are going to go.

It'll be just like the JREF Patridge Family...

Except without the music and the singing. Or the cheesiness.

Woohoo! I just received my KSC ticket. :D As someone here suggested, I ordered through their web site. It looks good; now I really can't wait to go. BTW bring binoculars if you can, you'll need them! You can use the pay binoculars mounted there too. See http://www.themindspill.com/air_space/space/KSC/LC391.html for some pictures.

Is there any benefit to preordering tickets?

You don't have to wait in line at KSC, but you then have to pay shipping & handling. budddyh suggested buying tickets in advance; maybe he can give better reasons.

Alrighty. I've changed my flight reservations (I'll be walking funny for a while), and my KSC ticket is on its way, so I'm in. I plan to rent a car down there, so I suppose that means I'll have a couple seats free, if anyone needs a ride up the coast at sunrise....

(pretty women get preference, of course. what, I look stupid?)

Mike.

SkepticScott

Great new Mike! I don't know if it's an accurate count, but I think the trip will include:
Girl6, Trish, Trish's daughter, and me in my car (I obviously used your seating method ;)),
you (w/ car),
Lisa & Eddie, budddyh & his wife, and RichardR (Lisa & budddy said they may rent cars).

possibles:
The Central Scrutinizer and markb

That's nine definites and two possibles, and two cars. One more car should do it (hint, hint).

Anyone else interested in this trip should post here soon! Real soon, please! We're limited by cars and it's a 2.5+ hour drive, so we may not be able to fit someone that shows up unannounced.

Well,

As for me it looks like I'll be at KSC....but it'll be my first or second week at the new job....so I don't think I'll be able to take the tour with ya'll....but if you're still around after 4pm maybe we can all hook up for a beer prior to your trip back south??

Let's stay in touch!

No one ever said my neurons fired quickly, so this info may be way to late to be helpful.

When I went to Fl a couple months ago, I flew into Orlando for a conference, rented a car, and drove it to Ft Lauderdale. If you are planning on coming a day early just to visit the KSC, you might check the fares to see if it costs more to fly directly to Orlando.

You would save yourself 1/2 of a long drive.

just a thought...

I intend to go on the KSC trip. Don't know if I'll rent a car. I'm trying to avoid that. (Of course, I intend to chip in for the cost if I get a ride from someone else.)

BTW, anyone happen to be arriving around 5:25 PM on Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale? We should share rides to the hotel if we can.

The Wednesday night meetings start at 7 PM. And the hotel does have an airport shuttle...you just have to call the hotel upon arrival and they send the van. It's about a 15 minute trip. The JREF is between the airport and the hotel...closer to the airport.

We're about a 10 minute and $10 cab ride. (Cab fares down here are high and other than at the airport or Port Everglades, you can't just walk out on the street and hail one; you have to call for one.)

SkepticScott
18th December 2002, 06:59 AM
I'm arriving at 3:24, renting a car, and going to the monthly meeting. I'll gve a ride to the hotel or to JREF to anyone that needs one.
Is anyone interested in meeting for dinner that night? It may be tight for people arriving at 5-5:30, unfortunately. You may have to go straight to JREF.

Linda
18th December 2002, 07:08 AM
We usually provide cookies and coffee/soft drinks for the meetings, but I can bring in some trays of sandwiches for those who won't have time to eat. I usually have to go to Costco on the morning of those meetings to pick up sodas, etc. so it won't be any trouble to get some food too. We usually put a cup out for donations if anyone wants to kick in a little for refreshments.

SkepticScott
18th December 2002, 07:35 AM
Linda, is there a fast-food restaurant in the area? Perhaps guiding people to a Wendy's, Friendly's, or the like would be enough. I'll be free before the meeting if you need another pair of hands.

Is the JREF monthly meeting on the Thursday evening or the Wednesday evening?

There's several restaurants close by our offices...none within walking distance though. On Federal Highway there's a Boston Market, McDonald's, Pollo Tropical, an IHOP and others. Then on SE 17th St. there's a ton of places...Outback Steakhouse, Chuck's Steakhouse, Bimini Boatyard, DoughBoys Pizza, a Japanese restaurant, Bravo Mariano's (great Italian food), Wendy's KFC, Arby's, Joe's Diner and more. All are within a mile of us.

Repeating....Wednesday Jan. 29th is the monthly discussion group at 7 PM. Thursday at 9 PM is the weekly webcast. We can accommodate visitors to listen here, but not a huge crowd. We usually have a few people in the audience, but they have to keep quiet so as not to interfere with Randi & Co. (unless Randi brings someone else to the mike as a guest...which will most likely happen on Jan. 30th!)

Since Girl6 and Lisa described their plans for the Internet show as "hijack", I don't think Randi & Co. will have much chance. If Randi's nice, though, I'm sure the ladies will bring him to the mike as a guest. ;)

Myself, I'm going to sit quietly in the audience and not interfere with whichever group has control.:D

The poll (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11403) shows five people on Wednesday and six on Thursday.

Okay...I'm gonna need a ride up and back for the KSC tour. Any space left anywhere?

If you haven't heard, I had a heart attack Newtonmas eve at about 10pm, and they've got me on a driving restriction here for another week, so it's probably not a good idea for me to be behind the wheel of a full-sized sedan loaded to the gills with The Foundation's Finest as it thunders up the Florida interstate...

Hell is nowhere near here, and the water is at an all-time low. I WILL be in Florida!

Lisa

Again Charlie, glad to hear you're recovering.
Ed and I have decided to fly to Florida and rent a car rather than drive. In that case, we'll have extra room to go to KSC. (Our transport is a two seater)

The ticket is small, and it comes with some literature, but the total was < 1 pound. It came FedEx, not USPS, which might explain the problem. Also, when I bought it the tickets were $26. I didn't know the price was going to go up, but I don't feel so bad now.

I'll breeze past while the rest of you wait in line. :p But then you'd hunt me down and kill me. k:-O :( I guess I'll wait until the rest of you buy tickets.

I just got this email back from the KSC, explaining why they want to charge $11 S&H for buying the ticket on the web:

Thank you for your interest in Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Our standard handling fee for all tickets is $1.50 per ticket and the shipping fee for all orders is $10 via UPS. If you are just wanting to purchase regular admission tickets you can just purchase them once you arrive here with no problems or shipping or handling fees. Please let us know if you need additional assistance.

No explanation of why they can't just email it.

Anyway, I think I'm just going to buy mine when I get there.

My ticket arrived this week. The credit card receipt is dated 12/21/2002. The cover letter is dated 12/21/2002. The "Visit Date" on the cover letter is 12/21/2002. The "Expires" date on the ticket is 12/22/2002. The ticket arrived via UPS on 12/30/2002. Now, either NASA has invented a time machine, or I'm never going to make it.

I called down there and the lady said that I could simply bring the ticket and they would exchange it. Okay...so I payed $11.50 for what reason?

If anyone is looking for a ride up the coast, let me know. I will have three seats to spare, but don't count on the rear seat being ... spacious. I'm a sucker for Ford Mustangs....

Hello All,

I'm new to posting in this forum, but I'm coming to TAM and will arrive on Wed at 2:44pm and would like to join you on the trip to KSC. (And to the Wed. meeting, if I can.)

I won't have a car, so I'd need a ride, or use of someone's experimental teleportation device. I'd be glad to pay for the privilege either way.

Thanks, and I look forward to meeting you all there!

Driver plus long-suffering spouse/navigator. I guess that means there are two spaces in our car, unless I already promised them to someone, in which case they best speak now :)

Meeting at 6:45 sounds just fine and dandy to me. Please, me me me me! :D

Seriously, I noted the following said they would have cars for this trip:

buddyh
Skeptic Scott
Lisa
Wonderful World

I noted about 12 people who said they were going. That should be enough cars.

The only problem I will have is that 6.45am is 3.45 am CA time. Don't expect much conversation from me on the journey.

One passenger ticket for me, please. No specific seat promised yet.

I'm totally cool without myself, but... The only problem with a group tour is that we'd have to "pay in full 72 hours before arrival", which past a couple hours ago. :( Can we decide when we get there? While the tour that includes the wildlife preserve is interesting, I'd rather spend the time with the hardware.

Anyone have room for a Segnosaur in their car? (I can ride in the trunk if necessary. Or you can strap me to the hood of your car.)

Requesting one passenger seat for a carbon-based unit loaded down with camera, film, and cash for gas and a souvenir KSC hat. Am willing to share some of the driving at this time -- but that might change. 6:45 in the ayem, huh? Are we planning a rest stop for when those high-fiber breakfasts kick in? :D

Charlie and Segnosaur, ...Ed and I will be renting a car, so hop in.

I think I had also half-offered a KSC ride to markb, so if he still wants it (and we're still on for a ride from the airport too, mark).

(Now I feel bad for Electric Monk, who seems to be the only ride-less wonder. But I'm sure someone'll step up to the plate somehow!)

I do still want a ride, and yes, we're still on for the ride from the airport. (And thanks again!)

Though now you make me feel guilty for leaving Electric Monk without a seat. But I'm sure someone else with a car will step up and offer seat, right?

Well you offer is appreciated. (And I'll spring for the gas)

A close examination of the thread reveals that Wonderful World might still have a seat open for me. I sure hope so.... :(

Gas money's a given, and I'll even throw in a tape of the South Park and Penn & Teller shows that I'm bringing.

Next, I need to figure out how to get to the Wed meeting. I'll be arriving at the hotel around 3, and will hang out in the lobby looking for those with friendly faces and JREF paraphernalia.

I'm heading for LAX at about 3:30am PT, so I won't see any responses after that.

Electric Monk,

CSSMariner was going to offer rides from the airport to the hotel and back. I will be going to the Wednesday meeting directly from the airport, most likely. Also, I think that Lisa and her husband were offering some help.

As for Thursday, I think that we still have enough cars to cover everyone.

One last thing... You can probably call the JREF office if you get stuck at the airport. Linda may be able to help. Good luck!

I'm coming in at 4:55pm Wednesday. I'm staying at a different hotel, but I'm just wondering if people are going to do anything to make themselves stand out. (Is there a meeting place that people will congregate in? A special dress code?)

SkepticScott

Segnosaur, I'll be in the lobby wearing a white JREF T-shirt, the 'new' ones with the 13 questions on the front (and a big "?") and the 13 answers on the back.

My airplane arrived after 1am Thursday, so I got to the hotel after 2:30 am. I made it to KSC, but I missed the rest of you. If anyone was counting on me, I apologize.

Mike.

I'll always treasure the autographed picture of me with the Director of the KFC. Sorry Hal, maybe next time. :D

Thanks for posting the pictures, Scott.
