Some Catholic women become "brides fo Christ"

"We're just being who we are, having this pure heart for the Lord because he's the first one in our life and the only one in our life," said Julie Taube, 55, of Andover, whose love for Jesus led her to become a consecrated virgin in a January service, complete with a veil and a ring.

About 1,200 Catholic women worldwide are living as consecrated virgins, about 100 of them in the United States. In the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, 10 women are in the ancient vocation, the most of any U.S. diocese, although Boston consecrated its 10th this month.

Consecrated virgins are not nuns, who also take vows of celibacy but who are tied to a religious order and sometimes live in isolation. Consecrated virgins -- also called "women in the world" -- have jobs in the world of the laity, and their own homes. And they do God's work in public. And when others go home to a significant other, like nuns they go home to a significant other: God.

Virginity is a gift, Burke said, that should be given either to a spouse or to God.

"If you're not a virgin anymore, then you don't have that gift to offer him," he said. "But you can offer him other gifts."

He acknowledged that the value of virginity has fallen in recent years.

Why would the value of virginity fall? Supply, demand; it doesn't seem to make sense.

Economically speaking, the value would fall if supply was greater than demand.

Are these prices listed on a commodities exchange? Where can I make a purchase?

Honestly, I think it's really sick.

At least they are giving their virginity to "Christ" or "God" as opposed (at least as far as we know) to the priest or other religious leader.

I suppose we should be grateful these people are taking themselves out of the gene pool.

LOL. That's cold, man. That's really cold. But you're a penguin, so I guess it's O.K.

Isn't it about time for ceo_esq to weigh in and explain to us how this doesn't demonstrate any hostility towards sex on the part of Catholic Doctrine?

I feel for ceo_esq: it's got to be hard to defend your sacred cow when it keeps goring holes in the wall. :D

She's 55.

55, people. She waited an awfully long time before deciding to consecrate her virginity to God.

I have to think it didn't have much value at this point.

There have been other virgin orders, like the vestal virgins, that about all I know of them that they were virgins consecrated to Vesta.
There are many people who believe that learning to ignore the sexual nature is beneficial, I think it is something to be enjoyed.
Does god really care that you 'saved' yourself for him when you die?

Peace

I feel for ceo_esq: it's got to be hard to defend your sacred cow when it keeps goring holes in the wall. :D What sacred cow? I don't pretend to account for these people's decisions. So 100 Catholic women in the United States decided to become consecrated virgins, while 10,000,000 more decided to marry and get right to work on one of those big Catholic families. Draw your own conclusion.

I'd say it's possible evidence of hostility towards sex on the part of a select group of probably unmarriageable spinsters (although the ones quoted in the article deny it). But if you want to impute something to Catholic doctrine, why not refer to the actual doctrine? It's what I do when I want to attempt a thoughtful observation on the subject.

When will humans be free of the archaic stupidity that is religion?

Well, today virginity is down one-half on heavy petting - I mean, trading.

Before you marry buy a futures contract certifying virginity. Always best to hedge! :D

When they are free of the need for toilet paper.

And it makes even more sense if you think God cares about the survival of our species as a whole.

My first thought exactly! We should encourage this sort of behaviour among religious fanatics!

Is that how you feel about vasectomies, tubal ligations, etc.? Or did you just feel like being offensive?

Is there some background between you two to justify this leap?

Um, arcticpenguin last logged on to the board over 2 years ago. This is the most extreme case of 'esprit d'escalier' I have ever heard, and it wasn't even that good a comeback.

Which would be strange as arcticpenguin last logged on in June 2004, and HeavyAaron didn't join the forum until mid 2005. Whatever it is, he should let it go.

Well, there you go. Didn't think to check on arcticpenguin's last log-in time. Is there a way to do that besides looking up when the person posted last?

Oddly, the name sounded somewhat familiar.

I don't have anything against him... never messaged him before or vice-versa... But it did come accross as very offensive to me. Teasing people who voluntarily don't reproduce does not seem... nice.

If you click on a members user name, and select "view public profile" in the bottom right corner of the blue bar which runs across the screen you can see a members "last activity".

And you seem to be being over sensitive. As this was a targeted reaction that it would be good to reduce the number of overly religious nuts.

Yes, I was being overly sensitive. I appologize for that.

However, I still believe the statement was offensive and broad enough to encompass a much broader portion of the population.
