I know some will disagree. But you're wrong. To those who commit this most annoying error, do you pronounced UNIX as "UNNIX" too?? duh!!

Linus Torvalds disagrees with you (http://www.paul.sladen.org/pronunciation/).

Sorry bigred, but you are wrong. The first syllable rhymes with tin. It doesn't rhyme with my.

From: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=linux
The pronunciation of "Linux" has been a matter of much debate.
Many, including Torvalds, insist on the short I pronunciation
/li'nuks/ because "Linus" has an /ee/ sound in Swedish
(Linus's family is part of Finland's 6% ethnic-Swedish
minority) and Linus considers English short /i/ to be closer
to /ee/ than English long /i:/ dipthong. This is consistent
with the short I in words like "linen". This doesn't stop
others demanding a long I /li:'nuks/ following the english
pronunciation of "Linus" and "minus". Others say /li'niks/
following Minix, which Torvalds was working on before Linux.

...you get to pronounce it any way you'd like.
If I go to Sweeden, I'll be sure to pronounce it Leenux. Until then, it's LY-nikz as in LY-nis.
And GIF should have a hard "G", given the nature of the acronym.
So there.

...and logically, therefore, just as good.

By that logic, AIDS should be pronounced Ah-ids

If English was logical in how its vowels are supposed to be enunciated we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Care to elaborate on why you think that that would be the case?

I haven't seen any discussion of the pronunciation of the second syllable. When I listened to Torvalds pronounce it a few years ago, he said leen-ooks. Not a schwa in the last syllable, so for people who are insistent that it's "linnux" because that's how he says it, you have to be sure to pronounce the second syllable right too.
