He basically put it down to mental illness and trickery, if I remember correctly.

The reason that Roman Catholics are the only ones that seem to get them is the same reason they're the only ones that see aparations of Mary: They're the only ones looking for them. Specifically, there's a Catholic dogma to the effect that our suffering adds to the "treasury of merit". Hence, asceticism, corporal mortification (i.e. self-flagellation, self-crucifixion, et al.) and stigmata.

I think they're mostly psychosomatic and probably at least a few cases of outright fraud. I see them as kind of like the Catholic version of speaking in tongues. People get themselves so worked up that all that emotion has to come out somewhere.

Yeah, *IF* this is the book I read (mine's in storage right now, can't get to it to confirm) those reviews toward the bottom more accurately reflect it. If you read the first two reviews you might believe that the book actually leaves an impression that the writer was somehow mystified over the phenomenon. Nuh-uh.

He makes a good case for a natural explanation. Now I gotta go dig up my book to see if this is it!

Actually, I saw a teevee program, and part of it talked about a Baptist who exhibited stigmata.

It has to do with the focus of the denomination. Catholics focus on the death of Jesus, while most Protestant groups focus on the resurrection and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This is why not too many Catholics speak in tongues.

Has anyone seen the National Geograghic Channel show Is It Real? They did a show on stigmata where a pair of scientists demonstrated several ways of inducing stigmata. One way involved chemical burns while another involved a razor bent in such a way that caused minimal pain and when scraped across the palm caused the blood to arrive so slowly that it appeared to come from nowhere. Stigmata is such an easy thing to fake on top of the fact that people have been caught in the act of fraud, thus the most reasonable conclusion is that a vast majority of stigmatics are self-induced wounds. Maybe 0.001% can be explained through the psychosomatic effect or other purely psycho-physical explanation.
